More Free Books for Sept 26, 2019

The weekly Free Books email arrived from LPC Books this afternoon and I am sharing the offerings with you. Typically these books are only free a short time so grab them quickly if you find them interesting.

I know these books are available on Amazon in the USA and Canada, I’m not sure about other countries but it’s worth a try just in case.

Most of these have been offered previously and I have read them. I shared them here a few months ago and they are definitely worth reading.

The only one I haven’t read is the last one, the Young Adult mystery. I think I did download book 1 of this series (this one is book 2) and started it but didn’t get it finished. It looked like it would be interesting for young people.

Leftover Girl

A little Fantasy is a nice change of pace.

Leftover Girl  Leftover Girl – C.C Bolick … Jes is used to being the new kid in class. Her family is on the move again – to yet another school. Maybe this time, moving to her adopted mother’s home town, she will get to complete the school year in one place and maybe even make a real friend.

She has no memory of life before her adoption, although small fragments are beginning of surface giving her clues to the truth of her abandonment.

Her life is built on lies causing Jes to push everyone away in order to keep her secret.  Meeting a strange new student who might know about her past and where she comes from has her drawing closer than ever before. He is in town looking for a certain girl and he thinks she could be the one.

Remembering is starting to happen more and more but knowing is going to come at a cost to her. Once those doors are opened there will be no going back, life will never be the same.

This story was tough to put down, and it was great. Now I need to read the sequel.

The Shell Collector’s Daughter

There are many TV shows that could possibly qualify as one of my favorites.

Touched by an Angel is one of them. A team of three angels is assigned to help a human in a difficult situation. They must appear undercover, assuming a persona and occupation that will allow them to become a regular part of life for their assignee. They’re allowed to be friendly, as long as they don’t reveal who they really are … unless their person has figured it out first. They can help things along a little by using their heavenly powers but it would have to be done discreetly.

The angel personalities are so different and that’s a big part of the appeal. The older lady is bossy, the younger is tender hearted and helpful. The sweet guy fills two roles; he is also the angel of death.  Most of the time, though, he just makes himself useful. When the three of them have trouble seeing eye to eye, as often happens, the carrying out of their assignment is a challenge — so much fun to watch.

Twice in a Lifetime is another of my favorite TV shows. There is just one angel this time. He’s been given advanced warning and he’s already in place waiting for the event. It is always a premature death of  someone who has managed to made a mess of their life. Sometimes the cause will be bad attitudes, bad choices, or both.  The angel (a cute young guy) will take the newly deceased person before a heavenly judge (an older man with a twinkle in his eye and a heavy hand on his judge’s gavel). To address confusion about why they are there he will show flashbacks of their life, highlighting their bad choices. If they exhibit understanding and remorse they will qualify to attempt a do-over. If they agree to his terms they will be sent back (accompanied by the cute angel) to an earlier  date in their life. They won’t go back as themselves but in some other role meant to cross paths with them. They have several  weeks to convince their younger self (without direct influence) to change their ways. If they are successful their life path will change, avoiding the dreaded death scene. Of course, this is never as easy as it sounds. So many things can go wrong, and usually do. The angel’s patience is severely tried at times, as he attempts to coach them toward a good ending.

The Shack by William P. Young is a book that reminds me of an extended and expanded episode of Touched by an Angel. The similarity is in the part heaven plays in changing lives and it always takes patience on the part of the angels.  They can’t cause, or convince anyone to do anything. They need to find loving ways to influence, but not force, people to make changes and good choices. Fortunately, for the struggling humans, angels do not give up easily.

The Shell Collector’s Daughter reminded me of these past enjoyments and I had to share them as an introduction to this heart warming story.

The Shell Collector's daughter

Surf’s Up Series – The Shell Collector’s Daughter – Beth Wiseman

Carianna has an unusual and close  relationship with God… has had all her life. Every Thursday she has afternoon tea with Him, and they talk. She listens to him every other day, too, but Thursdays are special. The rest of her routine for the week, Monday to Friday, has her catching the early ferry to Shell island. She stays until she has her day’s quota of beautiful gleanings for her father’s shop

Her kindness is legendary. She is loved by everyone in the village, and they take her safety personally. Her father is grateful because Carianna is very beautiful and has gained the unwanted notice of many men, young and otherwise. As protector, he has a  fierce reputation with the men of the village and beyond. So far, not one of the local men has ever gained his approval and they value their life too much to make any unsanctioned moves toward his daughter.

Carianna is oblivious to all of the drama.  She’s never shown any interest in a boyfriend, never mind a husband. This is going to have to change. Her father has been diagnosed with cancer and time is quickly running out for him. He’s worried. He’s trying to plan a safe future for her life without him.

Reporter Dominic is spending time on her beach researching an article for a travel magazine. There are a number of beaches in the country popular for shell collecting and this is one of them. He’s writing a fluff piece, really, but since he’s still grieving the death of his mother he appreciates the simple distraction of an easy subject. Other than work, he has nothing  on his mind, not even attractive women. The very last thing he wants to consider right now is love. That’s why it’s such a shock when he encounters a beautiful young woman; feeling an instant and strange bonding with her. She is unlike any one he has ever met. He can’t quite find a way to adequately describe the aura of puzzling innocence about her. The unsettled feeling each time he sees her has him attempting to escape.  It never works. Somehow he finds himself drawn back into her life instead.

This afternoon she’s insisting on taking him home to meet her father. Dominic is trembling in his boots. A fellow passenger on the ferry to the beach told him what would happen if her father ever saw him showing interest. Now he’s in shock; her father has just issued an  invitation for him to stay and share a meal with them … a confusing, and scary  development.

She’s not surprised at her father’s invitation. God has been whispering in her ear. He’s shared with her the description of a man … this man.

Beth Wiseman has done an awesome job, telling this beautiful and unusual story.

Murder in the Family .. Five stars

Murder in the Family  Murder in the Family – Ramona Richards

This was a fun read. It was serious but fun. Family feuds, kept alive with greed. Murder and mayhem, from beginning to end. This was the serious part. The reluctant but feisty executrix of Aunt Liz’s will, this was the fun part. I think it makes all of us want to stand up and cheer  when the abused goes toe-to-toe with a bully… and wins. Molly discovers she is adept at gaining the upper hand once she decides to stand and fight.

Twenty years earlier, both Molly and her brother Mike left town when their mother lost her battle with cancer. There was nothing left for them after an unscrupulous uncle  blackmailed their mother into giving up everything they owned. Molly severed all family ties and never looked back… until now. It was a shock to learn Aunt Liz died and left a well thought out plan for her estate to be dispersed in a way, legally, her brother would not be able to get his grubby hands on any of it.

Molly is convinced the whole family is mean and greedy but it appears Liz thinks differently. She’s left detailed lists to make sure the neglected family members will get the help they need for a change. It seems Molly and Mike were not the only ones abused by the family bully and his like minded offspring.

The resolve to honour her beloved aunt’s last will falters when she enters the jam packed house of a hoarder. The shear volume of stuff, and the overwhelming smell of something dead, is enough to make her turn tail and run. If it wasn’t for the perseverance of Liz’s friends she would have.

The many ups and downs of the struggle, along with her determination to win the fight, kept me engaged and smiling with every skirmish won.

This won a solid Five Stars from me. I loved this book.

There is a nice variety of other books again this time. You can probably tell it wasn’t much of a burden to read through this list.

Agnes Hopper Shakes UpThe Adventures of Agnes Hopper Series – Agnes Hopper Shakes Up Sweetbriar book 1 – Carol Guthrie Heilman

A Heart Surrendered  A Heart Surrendered  – Joy K. Massenburge

Fashioning the Future  Aspiring Hearts Series  – Fashioning the Future book 3 – Kay Moser

Tess in Boots  A Country Romance – Tess in Boots – Courtney Rice Gager

Murder in Disguise  A Preston Barclay Mystery – Murder in Disguise book 3 – Donn Taylor

“Till next time, Happy Reading!

Something I Am Not

This time it’s different. I’ve written other posts, lamenting what could have been great writing were it not watered down with obligatory but unnecessary sex scenes. This book is the exception… the sex scenes are not here to titillate the reader. They are an integral part of the story… unfortunately.

There wouldn’t be a story without the raw honesty in Something I Am Not. Sex plays a huge role of the life of the protagonist, and many of the other characters crossing paths with him. It’s heart breaking and difficult to read in places, but I’ve given it five stars.  This is an important and timely story. It will grab the reader’s attention from the very beginning, not letting go until the last page.

It has impacted my life, shining a light on some things I would not have thought to consider. Triggering the surfacing of a long buried memory of my own abuse. I think that was the goal of the author when she birthed the idea. Hoping  hurting and abused  readers would see themselves in the life of another and, find hope. The author has done a masterful job of presenting a difficult subject with sensitivity.

Something I am Not

Something I am Not – Cher Gatto … Billy was three when his mother sent him to live with his manipulative and abusive father. At least that’s the story. He has never seen evidence of his mother and he has no memories of her.  At seventeen he is trying desperately to survive long enough to graduate and move on.

The abuse hasn’t only been at the hands of his father. Piles of unbearable shame have been heaped on his head at the hands of his father’s girlfriend. It seems everyday a new source of abuse appears in his life. It is never ending.

The faithful mentoring of his high school football coach is his only safe place. Billy is a football star and he’s hoping a college scholarship will be his ticket out. At least that was his dream until another little brother showed up one day. How can he think about leaving a defenseless little boy alone to suffer what he has at the hands of his father and his friends?

Part of his father’s business is staging professional boxing matches. Billy has been trained to fight but doesn’t and has never manage a win over his father. Now, he has been backed into a corner and is going to have to fight to the death, to save himself and his little brother. The fight will probably  mean his own death but he is willing if it means his brother will be spared a life of abuse.

Now,  for a change of pace. A few stories in a lighter vein. Well, some of them are lighter than others … but they are all good.

Help Me Hold MeFull Heart Ranch Series – Help Me, Hold Me book 5 – Barbara Gee

Sticks and Stones  The Barn Church Series – Sticks and Stones book 2 – Shellie Arnold

Second Chance Love  Second Chance Love – Pamela S. Meyers

Facade  Façade – Pepper Basham

The Edge of Mercy  The Edge of Mercy – Heidi Chiavaroli

This was a great bunch of books, it was difficult to pick just one to feature.

Happy Reading!

Lost in Hardyland

Lost in Hardyland is a cool book with an irreverent approach to family life.

Lost in Hardyland  Lost in Hardyland – Shannon Heuston

Brad Hardy, manager at Walmart, has commitment issues. With good looks and a magnetic personality women love, he has no shortage of willing partners. He is upfront about his casual intentions but they are all convinced they will be the one able to change his mind. Needless to say, he leaves a long string of broken hearts in his wake.

One did trick him into a wedding early on and soon left him a single father of two. He loves his kids but won’t be settling down again anytime soon.

He’s pretty sure there are no other offspring out there belonging to him, well, except for a daughter. One of his brief encounters resulted in an unintended pregnancy. She sidestepped the abortion he demanded and was willing to pay for. His life was crazy at that point and he was convinced he couldn’t take on the responsibility of another child. It turned out he was glad she refused. The minute he caught a glimpse of Zoey he was in love.

Zoey’s life has been turned upside down. Her mother died after a too brief bout with  cancer. Now she’s been sent to live with the father she barely knows. No one in her life has ever had anything good to say about him. On top of that, he’s cancelled her private tutor and mentor, the one bright spot in her life. Zoey is not your average teenager. She’s brilliant and her IQ adds an interesting dimension, and challenge, to family life.

It appears her dad is brighter than he wants anyone to believe. It seems he is trying to fly under the radar with his casual, not-that-bright persona, but she is not fooled. In fact she’s glad to have noticed… life is looking up.

I loved this book. Nothing is as it at first seems. This happens in real life more often than we realize, I think. On the surface the family lives a loose and carefree lifestyle with little ambition and few goals. Beneath the surface lives intent, commitment to family, and deliberate self control in areas that matter. There is also awareness and thoughtful consideration.

Sometimes an irreverent look at life is a good thing. It can help us identify what is really important after all.

And then there’s the list of other great books enjoyed.

Following Rain  Following Rain – Darrel Nelson

The Twelfth Hour Patriot Georgia Patriots Romance series – The Twelfth Hour Patriot – Jennifer Youngblood

Blind Justice  Blind Justice – James Scott Bell

The Caretaker's son  Secrets in Savannah – The Caretaker’s Son – Yvonne Lehman

The Cowboys  Smitten Historical Romance Collection – The Cowboys – Jennifer Uhlarik, Linda W. Yezak, Sandra Merville Hart, Cindy Ervin Huff

I hope you will join me in some Happy Reading!!

Boy in the Darkness

Historical fiction is fascinating,  giving us a peak into life from another era. Usually it’s a picture of life beyond our imagining, especially for those of us born in the last few decades.

There are a multitude of settler stories describing life on the wagon trail, before trains and roads. Stories showing the hardships of life from the perspective of many different nationalities. Boy in the Darkness is one of them. It takes a look at life on the trail from a new perspective. It is a heartbreaking tale I could see happening in real life.

Struggling artists have been discovered many years after they lived, achieving fame and recognition many centuries later. The same holds true for brave souls. Unnoticed acts of courage, hidden away for decades, maybe even centuries, somehow  uncovered and finally honored. The lives of those discovering these stories can’t help but be changed by the experience.

Boy in the Darkness  Boy in the Darkness – Anne Schroeder … A young indentured Chinese boy was injured and left behind by his wagon train. He failed to show up when it was time to move on and was considered expendable.

Running to find shelter from his abuser, he’d fallen into a deep hole with no way of getting out. His cries were eventually heard but… he had the eerie sound of a wounded  animal and his language was unknown to them. Viewed with superstition he was  believed to be an evil spirit, someone to be honored and feared but not rescued. Not everyone was afraid it seemed.  Food and water were thrown down to him occasionally, keeping his hope alive.

It took one hundred and fifty years for someone to discover and preserve the truth of his courage.

It’s difficult to read a story like this and walk away unaffected. It left an impact on my life., that’s for sure.

Cape Ann  Cape Ann – John Theo Jr. … Danger lurks above and below the water.

Return to Walhalla  Return to Walhalla – Laura Hodges Poole …

Down to Earth  Down to Earth – Patricia PacJac Carroll … A sweet feel good romance

What Happened to Lori Genesis – What Happened to Lori book 1 – JA Konrath … a thriller.  Is she dead? Or is it much worse? (Mind-Blowing Twist Thriller Duology)

Fields of the Fatherless  Fields of the Fatherless – Elaine Marie Cooper … a historical novel based on a true story

Happy summer reading!

The difference is in the details

A pleasant surprise…it’s not the same! You read the synopsis and think Again? How many times can they use the outline before it gets old? Granted, there are a flood of books on the market, regularly churned out using a formula with a proven sales record. Some authors and publishers do like to take the easy road.

It’s not uncommon for us, as readers, to make assumptions based on unfortunate experiences. We’ve all lived that a time or two – where the book we pick up sounds like a book we’ve just read. More than once I’ve gone to check (it’s a good thing I keep a list) and the author is different so it can’t be the same book. Sure sounds like it though.

I’m most aware of the same-old, same-old, thought running through my head when I’m looking at a synopsis as a reader, or when I’m trying to write one as a reviewer.

As a reader, I’m learning more and more writers and publishers are taking a chance on creating something outside the formula. The difference is in the details and that’s a reflection of life. Honesty and authenticity is appealing in any story. I’m convinced, curiosity about the lives of others will provide someone with an inexhaustible supply of unique story ideas. It shows in recently published books. There’s one in today’s list reinforcing this idea in my head. The first one – A Promise Forged. A refreshing and interesting read. I had no idea young girls had such opportunities back in the day.

I’ve noticed there are several story lines trending in Romance novels right now. There are others as well but these ones keep showing up in my news feed lately:

  • Inheritance, Bed and Breakfast, scarred by failed romantic experiences.
  • Running from abusive relationship, small town refuge, hero saves the day.

I’m learning to take a chance on books sounding like something I’ve just read; because stories can be like finger prints – no two are alike.

There truly is a difference. It’s in the details. So don’t be fooled by the synopsis. Live dangerously – take a chance. You may discover a treasure.

I like to liven things up a bit by switching genres. Now, that will get rid of the same-old, same-old feeling.

Here’s my latest offering of interesting books

Lightning on a Quiet Night

Life gets a little uptight sometimes and I’d rather read than write. That’s my life these days. Can hardly bear to put my Kindle down. The awesome variety of downloads showing up in my emails only enables this over the top behavior. I’m having a good time but not much writing is happening.

I will apologize for posting this before everything in this list has a synopsis. Except I don’t really feel sorry. Sorry! This unfinished list has been around so long it’s turning grey.

I will tell you, I liked all of these books. Hope you do too. There is a good variety here, they are all  quite different.

Lightning on a Quiet Night  Lightning on a Quiet Night – Donn Taylor …. Beneficent, Mississippi views itself as a perfect town with perfect people. There is no crime and, until now, there has never been a murder. It’s a major shock to everyone. The killer has to be a visitor, someone passing through. It’s unthinkable this could be committed by a local.

Jack Davis believes the  town’s idyllic vision of itself and tries hard to convince Lisa Kemper that Beneficent really is perfect. Lisa’s new in town and skeptical. She doesn’t believe any place can be this perfect, there have to be secrets buried underneath the surface somewhere.

There are.

Her deadly inheritance  Jill Shepherd Suspense – Her Deadly Inheritance book 1 – Beth Ann Ziarnik … Jill fled seven years ago, after the untimely death of her mother. Now after all these years, her aunt Lenore is putting an application in motion to have her declared legally dead. She plans to claim the mansion and all it’s historical attributes for herself.

Jill’s uncle has always known she’s alive and is begging her to come back quickly, the company jet is waiting to bring her home.

Her return will be a shock. It could mean the end of his marriage. Can she bear that responsibility?

Clay Merrick is employed as a gardener/handyman but he is so much more than that. Former Special Forces, he is here tracking a murderer and is well on his way to having all the evidence he needs. When Jill shows up and the two stories intersect he is torn between loyalty to his case and a strong need to provide protection for her.

It turns out – Jill’s reappearance won’t be the only shock to this family.

You're the Cream in My Coffee Roaring Twenties Series – You’re the Cream in My   Coffee book 1 – Jennifer Lamont Leo …

This Daring Journey  Heart of the Mountains – This Daring Journey book 6 – Misty M Beller

A Million Miles From Home A Million Miles From Home – Mike Dellosso

In a Pirate's debt  In a Pirate’s Debt – Elva Cobb Martin

I’m hoping you feel inspired.

By Grace Draw Near, and some other good books.

It has been a great summer so far.  Quiet, relatively uneventful, there’s been some stress, and yet….

I was replaying a conversation in my head, one I’d had with friends the other day. Listening to the tone of it caused me to reassess the less than positive message I’m leaving with people. It prompted me take an honest, more upbeat, look at my life.

I realize: despite a prolific crop of weeds I can’t seem to get ahead of this summer (I’m paying for the neglect of last summer spent travelling), hot weather with record rainfall (and very muddy flowerbeds), unexpected stressors, some loneliness, sadness for friends losing loved ones (lots of that happening right now), still, – I’m loving my life.  At first glance, some things could be viewed as problems but on closer examination they turn out to be blessings. A freshly weeded flowerbed brings it’s own joy.

I’m grateful for health, a comfortable home, a reason to spend time outside in the  yard, an occasion to wear summer clothes without freezing. Books to read as an escape when I’m stressed. Activities to give me a reason to get up in the morning. Friends to come alongside when I need help (hauling away the tree that came down in last week’s wild thunder storm).  I’m grateful for this moment in time, because life will move on and things will change. And, maybe not for the better.

I will work on a more positive tone in future because the truth is; I am grateful for the life I’m privileged to live, everyday.

Another thing to be grateful for:

The number of books I’ve had to choose from the last few months has been awesome. The temptation has been to spend too much time reading –  but I’m not complaining, not for a second.

Here is a small list of books enjoyed.

By Grace Draw Near Wondrous Love Series – By Grace Draw Near book three – JoAnn Durgin …

All the Way Home  All the Way Home – Ann Tatlock

Runaway Heart Runaway Heart – Teresa Slack

Impossible Dream  Impossible Dream – Gemma Jackson

Memphis and me  Memphis & Me – Diane Moody

Running Home Second Chances Series – Running Home – Barbara Ellen Brink

I hope your summer is going well and you are finding much reading time too.

Happy Reading!
