BookBub has an awesome suggestion for us from one of my long time favorite authors. I’ve read many of Dee Henderson’s books but I don’t think I’ve read this one, I’m pretty sure it will be next in line.

Full Disclosure by Dee Henderson

Amazon quote:

Ann Silver is a cop’s cop. As the Midwest Homicide Investigator, she is called in to help local law enforcement on the worst of cases, looking for answers to murder. Hers is one of the region’s most trusted investigative positions.

Paul Falcon is the FBI’s top murder cop in the Midwest. If the victim carried a federal badge or had a security clearance, odds are good Paul and his team see the case file or work the murder.

Their lives intersect when Ann arrives to pass a case off her desk and onto his. A car wreck and a suspicious death offer a lead on a hired shooter he is tracking. Paul isn’t expecting to meet someone, the kind that goes on the personal side of the ledger, but Ann Silver has his attention.

The better he gets to know her, the more Paul realizes her job barely scratches the surface of who she is. She knows spies and soldiers and U.S. Marshals, and has written books about them. She is friends with the former Vice President. People with good reason to be cautious about who they let into their lives deeply trust her. Paul wonders just what secrets Ann is keeping, until she shows him the John Doe Killer case file, and he starts to realize just who this lady he is falling in love with really is…

Sadly, nothing else exciting made itself known to me so this new one is it.

My current read is still a bargain. It’s definitely a different story line than I’ve ever read, which is a big plus in my estimation.

Never Forget the Past: A Clean Romantic Suspense (The Men of Fire Beach Book 3)

Amazon quote:

He’s adjusted to life in Fire Beach, but when Makenna re-enters his life, he is forced to make a gut-wrenching decision: Continue living his lie or return to his hometown to help her catch the killer.

Captain Makenna Drake believed she was saving Matt Fisher’s life when she convinced him to leave his life behind, but now the fires have started again. As the only victim to survive, she hopes seeing Matt will fluster the killer enough to make a mistake. But can she protect him this time or will the killer finish the job started five years ago?

This next book was suggested yesterday and the suggester’s name escapes me. It’s definitely still a bargain.

Flying Fossils (Women of Fossil Ridge Book 1)

Amazon quote:

“Some women play bingo and go quietly into the night. My mother steals cars and breaks out of Alzheimer’s units.”

From USA TODAY bestselling Author Lynne Gentry comes this heartwarming peek inside a mother/daughter relationship turned upside down.

My aging mother is proof that not every southern woman is sweet tea and sympathy. Momma can’t remember which road to take when she has to drive from her ranch to the small town where she grew up. But she can recount every detail of the day I broke her heart. Her inability to forgive me has made her as crusty as the tiny fossils that cover the river’s limestone bluffs. After wasting twenty-five years trying to chip away this hurt, I finally decided it was just easier to stay away.

Then Momma fell and broke her hip. I flew home to try to mend fences with her one more time. Her refusal to let me take her back to Washington DC to convalesce left me no choice but to leave her in an assisted living center in Texas. I regret telling her that I thought her memory lapses meant it was time to sell the ranch. The moment she was strong enough to manipulate her walker, she stole a car and broke out of rehab. Just to prove me wrong. Again.

Now Momma is missing and I’m sandwiched between two impossible choices: stay in DC with my troubled teenager or go to Texas to find my demented mother. Either way, I feel like I’ve already lost.

The story of the Slocum women is the story many of us are facing. Navigating the care of an aging parent while parenting our own children is never easy. Some days you just have to laugh to keep from crying.

This series serves up a generous helping of laughs and hope. It’s a touching addition to your collection of southern small-town, generational authors like Ann B. Ross, Jan Karon, and Beth Hoffman.

Currently I’m reading and enjoying an author new to me, it is still a bargain and so are books 1 & 3 in the series. This is definitely holding my interest.

Another interesting book showed up just when I thought I was done.

Copycat Killer (True Blue K-9 Unit: Brooklyn Book 1)

Amazon quote:

Murder strikes close to home for a new K-9 unit in Brooklyn

When a double homicide is strikingly familiar to a twenty-year-old cold case, Detective Nate Slater is rattled by the parallels. With a child as the only witness, he and his K-9 partner must protect little Lucy and her aunt, Willow Emery. Nate’s rough past means he always keeps an emotional distance…but in this case getting closer is the only way they’ll all survive.

OK, I’m going to stop looking now.

If you have opinions on any of the authors shared here I would appreciate hearing about it. It would be help me make good choices, to know your likes and dislikes. I’m guessing on somethings and could be wrong. Please leave comments. Much appreciated.

Happy reading.

It’s casual browsing day today and it’s been fun. By the look of the first treasures found (I’m needing some light reading) I thought today was going to be a Cowboy – Marriage of Convenience theme. Several books are like that but then I came across something interesting with a darker side to it. There went my lighter theme. Oh well, variety is nice.

A Marriage of Convenience in the Show Me State (Cowboy Crossing Western Sweet Romance Book 5)

Amazon quote:

Zane Hudson just got custody of his four young children. Only problem is, he can’t watch his kids and run his farm, too. He needs a permanent housekeeper. He has every intention of hiring someone until…

Waverley Madris is two months behind on her rent and about to lose her house and her children. Getting stuck with handsome Zane Hudson and his four kids in the Diner bathroom seems like just the type of thing that was just her luck.

Except she emerges from that bathroom an engaged woman.

Show Me a Marriage of Convenience: Small-Town Single-Father Cowboy Romance (Cowboy Crossing Romances Book 1)

Amazon quote:

An ex-player cowboy with a little son, the boy’s shy plus-size aunt, and a reluctant modern marriage of convenience only the boy is excited about… A sweet, clean, wholesome romance with a happily-ever-after!

Kade agrees to a crazy proposal from the woman his child adores. But as a former foster kid, Kade learned to walk away before getting hurt. Can he now learn to stay and love?

Heather Johnson dreams of a real marriage with the man her sister abandoned. But the rumor is Kade might leave their small town again and take her darling nephew with him. She’s reluctant to trust a womanizer, husband or not. If she allows love for him to ignite her heart, will her marshmallow-soft heart become roasted and burned?

This next one is in the serious category. There are many forms of abuse in our world today and this is one of them.

Shattered Dream (Prisoners of Hope Book 1)

Amazon quote:

Cassie True dreams of the day she can resume her music career. Only one thing stands in her way, a court-ordered rehab program sponsored by a religious cult determined to steal her soul.

Singer/songwriter Cassie True enters a rehab program that promises to change her life. And it does…in ways she never expected. Caught in a religious cult’s ever-constricting web, she fights not only for her sanity but for the freedom to form real friendships. She longs to put alcoholism behind her, finish the program and return to her career. But when her friend is forcibly separated from her husband by the cult leader and a young boy is abused at the cult’s elementary school, she can’t stand by and do nothing.

Bucking the system is dangerous and could result in dismissal from the program—and a return to jail. Can Cassie and her coworker, Corban Dahlstrom, toe the party line yet work together behind the scenes to help others escape the cult’s clutches? Will they be able to withstand the fiery backlash that’s sure to come? Does their budding romance have a chance in a world where an iron-fisted leader controls all relationships?

***************************

One more in the serious category. This is a second look for me, at this suggestion. In many ways it will be a tough read but the topic is timely. The reviews tell me I should take a chance on this. The writer’s treatment of the subject makes all the difference and reviews suggest this has been treated well.

More Than Us by Dawn Barker

Amazon quote:

When parents disagree on how to care for their child, is it justifiable to take extreme measures?

Emily and Paul have a glorious home, money in the bank and two beautiful children. Since leaving Scotland for Paul to play football for an Australian team they have been blessed. But sadness lies behind the picture-perfect family – sixteen-year-old Cameron has battled with health troubles his entire life. There’s no name for what he has, but his disruptive behaviour, OCD and difficulty in social situations is a constant source of worry.

When Paul’s career comes to a shuddering halt, he descends into a spiral of addiction, gambling away the family’s future. By the time he seeks help, it’s his new boss Damien who recommends and pays for a rehab facility.

While Paul is away, Emily has to make a tough decision about their son. She keeps it from Paul knowing he’ll disapprove. And when a terrible accident reveals the truth, Paul takes his son and goes on the run, leaving Emily to care for fourteen-year-old Tilly, who unbeknown to her parents is fighting battles of her own.

Can the family join together for the sake of their loved ones, or will their troubles tear them apart?

What people are saying about More than Us:

Dawn Barker has the reader enthralled and reading as quickly as possible to find out what happens to the complex, flawed, yet endearing main characters.’ Reader review

Of the four, the book I’m looking forward to most at this moment is the first one, I’m in need of a lighter read to brighter my day. I’m not sure why that is exactly, it just is. Moods seem to be like the weather, unpredictable and change at a moments notice.

Before I can get to the new read I must finish the current one…

I think this one isn’t helping my mood. Probably because the villain reminds me of someone in my past. I think maybe I’d better speed read through this one.

Other than all that it has been a good weekend. I enjoyed a fun visit with my family and a pleasant sunshiny drive to get there yesterday.

I hope the weekend has gone well for you too.

Bargain books April 24, 2021

BookBub has a bargain suggestion that looks good. I’ve read and enjoyed books 1 and 5 in this series and that’s a good recommendation.

Pawleys Island Paradise boxset, Books 1 – 3

Amazon quote:

Boxset contains these books:

  • Book 1: Roadtrip to Redemption — Her escape brought her home.

Leslie Malone faces an empty, lonely summer. Her marriage is over. Her daughter is overseas, living her dream. Her students are enjoying a carefree summer break. What’s the purpose of her life if she’s not a wife, mother and teacher? The idea of a roadtrip beckons her. Aimless wandering? Or inspired discovery? A woman of faith, she asks God for His guidance, then does her best to follow His direction.

Hank Harrison is a quiet man, good with his hands, but short on words. He’s paid a heavy price for not forgiving his son for horrible mistakes made years ago, mistakes with vast consequences. Hank recognizes Leslie as an answer to his prayers, and together, they begin to mend their futures.

  • Book 2: Tide to Atonement — Life knocked him down. Faith raised him up.

Jeremy Harrison served his time — ten years in prison paid his debt to society for bad business practices. Now released, his plan for rehabilitation is clear: put his faith in God, work hard and put his past mistakes behind him. The last thing he wants is to be featured in a magazine article about ex-cons who successfully re-acclimated into society. Worse still, the gorgeous reporter takes an instant dislike to him.

Emma Jean Slotky knows that one of the interviewee names in her new magazine article assignment sounds familiar. Her dad helps her figure out why — Jeremy Harrison was responsible for the destruction of his employer and ultimately, Emma’s family, all those years ago. How can Emma possibly face the man who ruined her family with professionalism, and not disappoint her boss?

  • Book 3: Journey to Fulfillment — Let no man put asunder

A traumatic family event. Distinctly opposite ways of dealing with it between husband and wife. Instead of joyfully celebrating the safe return of their kidnapped daughter, Tom and Marianne are struggling to understand why they’ve landed on polar opposites of this parenting issue.

Accepting her husband’s approach would require Marianne to disown a beloved family member. That can’t be God’s will.

Accepting his wife’s approach would require Tom to relive past mistakes made by his own father that he forever swore he’d never repeat.

I’m currently reading a new book from yesterday. I’m only just starting chapter three so it’s too early for an opinion but I’ve loved all her other books and expect to enjoy this one too. It sounds like the bad guy in this story is one scary dude.

Axel: a clean romantic suspense (Lantern Beach Blackout: The New Recruits Book 2)

Women are missing. Private security firm Blackout must find them before another victim disappears.

Axel Hendrix likes to live on the edge. That’s why being a Navy SEAL suited him so well. But after his last mission, he cut his losses and joined Blackout instead. His team’s latest case involves an undercover investigation on Lantern Beach.

Olivia Rollins came to the island to escape her problems—and danger. When trouble from her past shows up in town, she impulsively blurts she’s engaged to Axel, the womanizing man she’s seen while waitressing. Now, she may not be the only one in danger. So could Axel.

 ********************

I feel like I’m copy and pasting things in all the wrong places and it’s hard to find what I think I’ve done. I’m having trouble staying awake long enough to finish this and that is likely a contributing factor to my sleep deprived, drunken journey through this post. If things are weird… my apologies.

I’m not confident I can keep my eyes open long enough to read before lights out but I’m sure going to try.

It’s fiction, it doesn’t matter if I can’t read it right, it’ll be fun anyway.

Happy Reading and a good night.

Bargain books April 23rd Part 2

I promised if anything else showed up I’d let you know. Well, it has. Book 1 in this new series by a favorite author was available last week and now book 2 is available this week. They are both at bargain prices… a good deal. I’ve read book 1 and I’m excited to see book 2 already.

Axel knows Olivia might be his chance to find answers and that acting like her fiancé is the perfect cover for his latest assignment. But he doesn’t like throwing Olivia into the middle of such a dangerous situation. Nor is he comfortable with the feelings she stirs inside him.

With Olivia’s life—as well as both their hearts—on the line, Axel must uncover the truth and stop an evil plan before more lives are destroyed.

Book 1 in this series was my favorite read last week. I couldn’t put it down until the last page was turned. Here is the description as a refresher.

Rocco: a clean romantic suspense novel (Lantern Beach Blackout: The New Recruits Book 1)

Former Navy SEAL and new Blackout recruit Rocco Foster is on a simple in and out mission. But the operation turns complicated when an unsuspecting woman wanders into the line of fire.

Peyton Ellison’s life mission is to sprinkle happiness on those around her. When a cupcake delivery turns into a fight for survival, she must trust her rescuer—a handsome stranger—to keep her safe.

Rocco is determined to figure out why someone is targeting Peyton. First, he must keep the intriguing woman safe and earn her trust. But threats continue to pummel them as incriminating evidence emerges and pits them against each other.

With time running out, the two must set aside both their growing attraction and their doubts about each other in order to work together. But the perilous facts they discover leave them wondering what exactly the truth is . . . and if the truth can be trusted.

**********************

My current read is not easy. Lives are messy and people who should be loving are anything but. They are rigid and judgmental. This book is well written in that the story unfolds layer by layer. At 2/3 of the way through I have no solid idea how it might end. I have some guesses but there are too many unpredictable players to say for sure.

illusions (The Apple Hill Series Book 2)

One reckless night. A lifetime of regret.

Corey Schaffer has spent her entire marriage privately repenting a horrible mistake made the week before her wedding. When her teenaged daughter is in car accident, Corey blames herself and aches to confess all to her husband.

Additionally, their son’s thoughtless rebellion has put her husband Paul’s pastoral position at risk, and he’s finding it hard to forgive. If he can’t forgive Michael how can he forgive her?

It all comes to a head when a disgruntled church member sees an opportunity for revenge.

Corey must dig deep to find the courage to help her family. Even if that means walking away.

BookRune has a FREE suggestion for us. This author is on my favorites list and I’ve recently read five of her books. I’m looking forward to this one too.

Amazon quote:

A tragic fallout drove them apart. When a family crisis calls him back to his small hometown where she still lives, will forgiveness lead them to a second chance?

Brenna Blaum had been sure of three things in her life—her brother, her running, and her dad’s star receiver. She has a supportive boyfriend, fulfilling career, and close friends. She keeps her past heartache where it belongs—in her rearview mirror. Until the man who broke her heart finds his way back to Big Prairie.

Craig Erikson had it all—popularity, success, and the love of his high school coach’s daughter. But after a year of mistakes that ended in a tragic accident, he’d left Big Prairie—the place he’d thought to always call home—hoping that without his antagonizing presence, Brenna would be able to heal. Now his mother desperately needs him, as do two young boys in her care. Craig has little choice but to return for good.

Unsure that she can forgive him, Brenna does her best to avoid him. Irritated that she ignores him as if they’d never meant anything to each other, Craig becomes determined not to allow it.

That’s all I have for book suggestions at the moment but if anything else shows up I’ll let you know.

*******************

Yesterday I shared pictures from family, of springtime in south western British Columbia, Canada. I was thrilled to see them mainly because we used to live there, within a few blocks of this actually. Spring is beautiful and looking at this picture brings back many pleasant memories.

In some ways I wouldn’t mind living there again but…

I have no reason to live there. That makes all the difference, I’ve found.

Without a reason it’s just not the same and it all falls kind of flat. There are a few places I’ve had reason to live more than once and it was different each time. The river of life moves on. I will treasure the memories I have of my time in Victoria and appreciate the new memories I’m making in this – my chosen spot, for now.

Speaking of my chosen spot, it is chilly out there. Last week we had storms and snow. This week the new snow is nearly gone and the weather is supposed to warm up, or so we were told. This morning I went out with the garbage, coat-less. Looking out it seemed like a hoodie should be enough. Not. The wind was bitter and it turned out to be -1c, feels like -8c.

Chatting with my neighbor for a few moments was a shivery affair.

Fickle, fickle weather.

One thing I do love about this place though; once the sun comes out it is always hot wherever it hits no matter what the real temperature is. Good job it shines often.

Happy Reading y’all.

Spring is Bustin’ Out all Over

It is. Well, not quite yet at my house but, by the looks of this, it is at somebody’s house.

A beloved family member was out for a walk in the sunshine this morning, enjoying the scenery in her neighborhood, and shared some of her favorite spots with us. I think she may have even been bragging just a bit.

I have her permission to share with you. It is incredibly beautiful this time of year in her city, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada and these pictures are but a little taste of what it really looks like. I have to issue this disclaimer because some of the die-hard spring lovers over there would be wild to think that we aren’t showing the absolute best of what spring is really like in that part of the world.

For those of us living where winter comes for sure every year, we would be thrilled to pieces to have our world looking like this in the spring. I wouldn’t mind walking around the block, one bit.

Beloved family member will be 90 something this year… 4, maybe. I think she is amazing to be out walking around the neighborhood, snapping pictures on her iphone, sending them to those of us not lucky enough to live where she does lol.

One of those balconies up there is hers. On a sunny day she can sit out on the deck with a nice cup of tea, enjoying the mountains behind us, (work with me here, pretend we are right there looking up at her building) and yes, we do get to see those pictures too. Awesome.

Posting these pictures reminds me of some others I’d love to share if I could find them quickly. Since I can’t … next time.

BookBub has two bargain suggestions for us. One I’ve read and one not. In that order.

Amazon quote:

Will anyone in his hometown ever forgive him for what he did?

A changed man, Grey Lawson returns home on parole after serving seven years of his sentence.

He can’t believe he didn’t realize seven years ago that everything he did affected this good woman. But will his return cause her more grief?

Create trouble for new deputy sheriff Trish Franklin whose father has reason to hate Grey? But one truth many don’t realize until it’s too late—vengeance can be dangerous.

While looking at this book I happened across book 4 in the same series, also at a bargain price. How awesome is that?

Spring’s Storm: Clean Romance Mystery (Northern Intrigue Book 4)

Amazon quote:

Sometimes the storm takes you with it~

One in particular.

Bad things begin happening on Trace’s property and troublemakers compete with each other to stop him in his mission to provide a place for kids who need help.

All the while Thea is caught in the middle–between the people she’s known all her life and this new man in town. He’s a mover and shaker. She’s a quiet piano teacher. Yet opposites attract, don’t they?

But when and how will the nastiness end? And will it end before someone gets hurt? Badly?

This is the second BookBub suggestion. It is looking very interesting.

Freed by a real-life hero, Charlotte Patterson is happy to join the fight, certain the corrupt commander murdered her supervisor. But her detailed memory is fading fast, and Lucas’s belief that God has everything under control could get them killed; Charlotte knows first-hand God doesn’t oversee everything.

Now with mercenaries hot on their heels, taking on a man protected by rank becomes deadly, pushing Lucas and Charlotte ever closer, turning their friendship into something much more and leaving Charlotte with just one prayer; that Lucas is right…God really is the master planner.

Well, it’s been a good day for books, I’m looking forward to reading all of them. It doesn’t always happen this way and I like it when it does.

I’ll save my current read to share tomorrow, just in case I’m short on something to talk about.

In the meantime…

Happy Reading

Free and bargain books April 20, 2021

BookBub has a bargain suggestion for us and a free book in the same series showed up as well.

Sandover Beach Melodies (Sandover Island Series Book 3)

Amazon quote:

She broke her own rules: you can’t fall in love when you’re on the run…

Sandover Island seems like the perfect place for Mercer to escape her past, but she knows it’s only a matter of time until it finds her. She isn’t safe, not even in Beau’s strong arms, as tempting as they are.

The harder Beau pushes at Mercer’s walls, the stronger they seem to be. She gives him an inch, then steps back a mile. He knows she’s worth the fight, if only she will give him her trust.

Just as Mercer finally starts to give in, the truth of her past barrels into her present. The question isn’t whether their love will survive, but will Mercer…

Trigger warning: This book deals with the topic of past domestic abuse, with little graphic detail.

Sandover Beach Memories (Sandover Island Series Book 1)

Amazon quote:

She didn’t come home to find love, but it had been waiting there for her all along…

When Jenna returns to Sandover Island after her mother’s death, her past and future intersect in ways she couldn’t imagine. Specifically with her high school nemesis, Jackson.

As much as she’d like to, Jenna can’t seem to avoid Jackson’s smirking and frustratingly attractive face. She doesn’t know why he’s pulling this new, nice-guy act, but she isn’t buying.

And if it isn’t an act, Jenna might really be in trouble…

Jackson has loved Jenna for half his life, and he won’t let her leave Sandover again without letting her know. Too bad she still sees him as the punk he was in high school.

Every kindness he tosses her way, she lobs back like a grenade. Jackson can see how high she’s built her walls to keep out the pain.

Good thing he’s prepared to scale them. No matter how long it takes...

Sandover Beach Memories is the first of a series of Christian beach romances following a group of friends and their interconnected stories. Fall in love with Sandover today!

Another bargain showed up from the same author and it looks like it will be fun with a humorous twist.

Falling for Your Fake Fiancé: a Sweet Romantic Comedy (Love Clichés Sweet RomCom Book 3)

Amazon quote:

What happens when the man I love to hate becomes the man I must pretend to love?

I can’t seem to escape Thayden Walker and his infuriating charm.

Even his mother and his Great Dane seem bent on playing matchmaker.

But I’m totally immune.

Until I’m presented with an offer that puts my ability to withstand him to the test.

If I marry Thayden, all my student debt goes poof, and he’ll take over the family firm.

There’s so much more at stake than money or a job, especially when I start to see the man beneath the mask.

Playing house with Thayden is the most dangerous game of all.

And we’re both set up to lose more than we could ever win.

Unless we’ve been on the same side all along …

My latest read and enjoyed was ….

Argosy Junction (The Rockland Chronicles)

This has to be one of my favorites from this author and it is still FREE if you hurry.

Montana—rugged, wild, and full of sheep that Matt Rushby had never imagined in his childhood dreams. Much to his relief, the local rancher’s daughter arrives just in time to save him from certain death by sheep smothering.

If only her family’s faith could have survived that fate.

They’ve left the local church, rejected God, lost their first Love. What had once been a close-knit fellowship of believers became a restrictive cult, and Lane wants nothing more to do with them or their God.

He didn’t mean to fall in love with her. She can’t let herself love someone who belongs to Jesus. The inner-city man meets rancher’s daughter and shakes up their lives.

Lose yourself in the pages of Argosy Junction and fall in love with Matt, Lane, and the entire Argosy family today.

They say that love conquers all, but Matt knows better. Without faith, love hasn’t got a chance.
