Read and enjoyed June 30, 2021

It has been a while since I last shared books read and enjoyed, they have accumulated somewhat and need clearing out. I’ll start with the ones I liked the best and then quickly run through the rest.

While I loved some more than others they were all worth the read.

It’s funny how one weakness can show up over and over in the same grouping of books. This time it was over use of the word had. Fortunately, it just seemed like it happened in many books, it didn’t really.

I loved this first one.

Just Look Up

After tirelessly climbing the ranks of her Chicago-based interior design firm, Lane Kelley is about to land her dream promotion when devastating news about her brother draws her back home—a quaint tourist town full of memories she’d just as soon forget. With her cell phone and laptop always within reach, Lane aims to check on her brother while staying focused on work—something her eclectic family doesn’t understand.

Ryan Brooks never expected to settle down in Harbor Pointe, Michigan, but after his final tour of duty, it was the only place that felt like home. Now knee-deep in a renovation project that could boost tourism for the struggling town, he is thrilled to see Lane, the girl he secretly once loved, even if the circumstances of her homecoming aren’t ideal.

This one was fun,

Three Little Words (Walker Family)

Ava Kingsley and Seth Walker might be the most unlikely friends ever. The only thing these two polar opposites have in common is a knack for wordsmithing. Back in college, they were known for their written sparring in the campus newspaper’s popular “He Says/She Says” column.

At their ten-year college reunion, they pick up right where they left off. Except this time their squabbling leads to a surprising turn: friendship and a year-long exchange of emails. So when Ava approaches a crossroads in her athletics department career in Minnesota, Seth is quick to offer the open apartment above the restaurant he’s been remodeling in Maple Valley, Iowa.

Now that I’ve refreshed my memory, this was another one I really liked.

One Enchanted Christmas: A Novella (Enchanted Christmas Collection Book 1)

Last December, mystery author Maren Grant had the most perfect night of her life. On a glimmering winter evening, she got to watch the photo shoot for her very first book and ended up on a magical date with the cover model himself—Colin Renwycke.

Fast forward one year. This December, with a looming deadline, restless spirit and her creative spark long since gone, Maren is desperate to get unstuck. And she can’t get Colin out of her head…or his year-old open invitation to spend a couple weeks writing at his family’s farm.

OK, clumping together all the rest.

My current read is actually the last one here. Deception. I needed three to complete the look so added it with a promise.

Wouldn’t you know it, in the beginning pages of this new book had appears three times in the same sentence. That’s hilarious.

Some of these books are still bargains if you are tempted.

Bargains or not, the authors will be happy if you buy one of their books. I hope you are tempted.

I’m purposely not looking at the suggestion strips today after the abundance we have been enjoying. Tomorrow.

Happy Reading!

Bargain books June 29, 2021

BookBub has an interesting suggestion for us. Checking out the first few pages, I’m finding her style of writing has me thinking this is a book I will enjoy. The subject is not easy but the treatment is sensitive and real.

Grace in Strange Disguise

Amazon quote:

Instead of a wedding, Esther is facing radical surgery and chemotherapy. Where is God when she needs him most?

Esther is a people pleaser. It’s never been a major problem because she’s just gone with the flow. Her father has always preached, “Follow Jesus and you’ll be blessed.” And up until age twenty-eight, Esther has never had any reason to doubt it.

Will she appease her father? Or will she listen to the words of a stranger who challenges everything she believes?

Grace in Strange Disguise is a soul-stirring contemporary Christian novel. Book 1 in the Grace series.

An interesting find in the suggestion strip.

Her Second Chance: A Christian Veteran Romance (Patriot Peak Book 1)

Amazon quote:

Their second chance was the one that mattered most.

Managing a ski resort comes with its own challenges especially when he finds out his high school sweetheart is his employee.

Merribeth is barely holding it together when the man who left her for the army shows back up in her life. While juggling her son, her job, and her unreliable car, she has to find a way to work with Chance despite their history.

When a ghost from her past threatens her son, nothing is more important than saving the people that Chance can’t keep out of his heart.

I’m currently reading and enjoying a recent mystery download.

A Callahan Confidential story

When fire investigator Mitch Callahan is attacked at a crime scene, he’s shocked to uncover the body of a slain ex-girlfriend—and realize someone’s framing him for murder.

I’ve read and enjoyed other books in this series and look forward to more somewhere along the line.

Bargain books – Mystery – June 28th Part Two

1531 Entertainment has a Mystery suggestion for us. Just like the Romance post earlier today – this is an author unfamiliar to me and the chance to experience two of his books is not to be missed.

Free and bargain Romance June 28, 2021

BookBub has a FREE suggestion for us today. It’s by an author I’ve not read and I’m curious. Research found two bargain books in the same series and since it takes more than one book to know an author we are going for one more of them.

Numerically, we are not seeing them in the right order but that’s OK. We will start with the FREE book first.

A Cowboy and his Skipped Christmas: An Adams Sisters Novel (Chestnut Ranch Romance Book 8)

Amazon quote:

He’s been in love with her forever. She’s told him no more times than either of them can count. Can Theo and Sorrell find their way through past pain to a happy future together?

Cowboy Theo Lange has worked Fox Hollow Ranch for a while now, and he’s had his eye on the middle Adams sister since the day he started. He’s asked her out plenty of times, but she’s always said no. He knows there’s a story there, but Sorrell Adams hasn’t told it.

Be patient, he tells himself. And don’t ask her out again.

Sorrell Adams had her heart broken a decade ago, when she swore off cowboys for good. She and Theo are friends, and she tells herself this over and over. She likes spending time with him more than anyone else, though. She adores his kindness and his hardworking spirit, and as the days and months pass and she starts to heal, she also starts to wonder when he’ll ask her out again.

Because she’s prepared to say yes the next time he does.

When will he ask?

Maybe Sorrell should ask Theo…

*******************************

A Cowboy and his Secret Kiss: An Adams Sisters Novel (Chestnut Ranch Romance Book 7)

Amazon quote:

He likes the pretty adventure guide next door, but she wants to keep their relationship off the grid. Can he kiss her in secret and keep his heart intact?

Cowboy Brian Gray has been sneaking off with Serendipity Adams for a couple of months before he breaks things off with her completely. He likes holding her hand in his truck and going to movies with her, but every time he suggests taking their relationship out of the shadows, she balks. Don’t need that in my life, he thinks. He does miss Seren, though.

Serendipity is the tall, awkward, says-what-she-thinks youngest sister in a trio at Fox Hollow Ranch. Her oldest sister is married now, to a cowboy at Chestnut Ranch, and Seren thinks maybe…just maybe…she could have her own Chestnut Ranch cowboy boyfriend too.

But there’s a catch. The middle sister has been hurt by cowboys in the past and Seren made a promise that she’d never date one. She didn’t know she actually liked cowboys…

No one’s ever come knocking on her door for a date. Until Brian…and you sure do like him.

Can Seren figure out how to get her cowboy boyfriend back and preserve her sister’s feelings? Or will Brian stay in the shadows forever?

*******************************

1531 Entertainment has a suggestion too but it’s Mystery. I think I’ll put it is a separate post this time. Maybe more than one story will show up to keep it company.

I’m excited.

My Kindle e reader has been acting up for awhile, behaving strangely, and now it won’t hold a charge more than a few hours. Forgetting it was tucked under my arm one day and dropping it down the stairs probably hasn’t helped anything either.

There was a notice waiting for me this morning, the new one ordered last night is on the way. This time it’ll come with a cover, anything to give it a softer landing should I happen to forget again.

I’m excited to see the non-black cover.

I figured I needed to be proactive and get the replacement ordered before the current one dies completely leaving me in the lurch. The withdrawal symptoms would be unbearable. I can still remember waiting a week when the last one died. (shudder)

The other thing I’m excited about is double the storage. I’m not sure if some of the strange behavior was space related but hopefully more room will solve any future issues if not present ones.

The other change to get used to will be the lighting. Up until now I’ve been partial to the non-lit screen.

I’ll let you know how it goes.

Happy Reading!

This and that June 27, 2021

I’m coming up empty on things to say today so I’ll just start talking and see where it goes.

My thoughts are stuck on things I need to be doing. There always seems to be something in the way of accomplishing much. My reasons could be excuses, but maybe not either.

My task for today was to spread weed killer around in my many flower beds. Some of them are technically flower beds and some are not. They are, however, still grassless areas where weeds can grow. This year I decided to buy true weed killer for a change. Keeping the weeds down by uprooting them has not been working out all that well for me, for a multitude of reasons.

I found concentrated weed killer a few weeks ago and needed to buy a sprayer to go with it. I have one, a 1 gallon size with a sprayer hose. Unfortunately I didn’t take care of it very well and it has a broken seal. Not the best scenario for keeping pressure built up,

I wanted something smaller this time so I could easily target stubborn weeds living close to plants. The helpful sales lady directed me to one she said would do the job. In my uneducated way I’m probably just not doing it right because nothing about it is working out well for me. It dribbles rather than produce a healthy spray.

Besides the weeds living near plants, there are larger areas needing to be sprayed. Using the smaller less than effective sprayer sounded like a monumental task, so…

Today I decided to buy a replacement for the old one. It could handle a larger volume and would cover bigger areas with less effort than the new smaller one. The weather was perfect this morning, calm and not too hot.

By the time the store opened and I was home and ready to get started the wind had picked up, more than a little. Spraying toxic chemical in the wind is not such a wise idea. Lunch and a good book sounded like a better idea.

If things calm down later maybe I’ll try again.

In the meantime I could take on an inside task I have been putting off forever.

While I was shopping for a sprayer I picked up bigger flower pots for my houseplants, they are badly in need of repotting. Indecision about what type of pots would fit my decorating ideas was the hold up. Some people can visualize the way things will look and it helps with their decision making. Unfortunately for me, I’m not one of them. As a last resort I settled on plain old, simple green flower pots. Maybe I can find something more decorative later on, to set the pots inside. Hmmm, probably won’t happen, but I can always dream.

It would be nice to have these root bound plants in bigger pots. I know they will thank me. Right after they yell, what took you so long?

The other dragging-my-feet task for today was a blog post. I think I have that almost checked off the list now.

To get it done, I did spend some unsuccessful time browsing for books even though we don’t really need any after yesterdays landslide. I was desperate for inspiration.

When it comes to reading, at least I did finish one of the new-to-me authors from yesterday. It was an ok story but didn’t pull me in the way some will do. Probably because the writing wasn’t as tight as I’d like. Too many barely relevant details, in my opinion. Some of us prefer more details though so I couldn’t say it was a bad read.

Most importantly, the story line was unique.

Silent Night Suspect (Love Inspired Suspense)

Suspected of a crime she knows she didn’t commit…

All she wants for Christmas is to remember.

Blood on her blouse. A gun in her hand. A cartel leader’s dead body in front of her. Widow Asia Stratton can’t remember what happened—just that she’s been framed. The only way to prove her innocence is to work with her ex-sweetheart, Nebraska state trooper Slade Jackson. But can they clear her name before this Christmas turns even deadlier?

****************************

I’ll let you know how the repotting goes and whether or not the houseplants plants thank me later.

In the meantime…

Happy Reading!

One more… Free… June 26

There are just a few hours left for this FREE book, we have to move quickly. This was mentioned on Facebook and I’m slow in seeing it. This is a favorite author and I’m grabbing it quick before it disappears at midnight.

Beyond the Waves: A Contemporary Christian Small Beach Town Romance (Pacific Shores Book 1)

Amazon quote:

Her high school sweetheart wants another chance at love.

Taysia Green nearly chokes on the water she’s drinking when Officer Kylen Sumner steps into her office claiming he’s back in town because he loves her. Since he’s broken her heart more than once, and she recently started dating youth pastor Blaine Pittman, she wants absolutely nothing to do with Kylen. But he’s been asked to stand in as the mediator between Taysia and wannabe model Sophia Clinesmith, who twisted her ankle in the parking lot of Taysia’s business and is threatening a lawsuit.

If she didn’t need him to help save her gym, Taysia would tell Kylen to take a long midnight walk on a short cliffside trail.

She’s perfectly happy with her life just the way it is.

So why is it that just the sight of Kylen Sumner sets her traitorous heart to dancing faster than it did the time Blaine kissed her?

Part two – bargain books June 26, 2021

It’s amazing how things can change so dramatically from one day to the next. After days of book famine today we have abundance – pressed down, shaken together, and running over. Not complaining.

Normally, I prefer full length books while most of these are less than. Not a bad thing with so many new books to get through.

The Only Witness (Callahan Confidential Book 2)

Amazon quote:

A police detective will do anything to protect a little girl who may have witnessed a murder in this suspenseful romance from USA TODAY bestselling author Laura Scott, part of the Callahan Confidential series.

Determined to question the ex-wife of a murder suspect, homicide detective Miles Callahan arrives just in time to save her and her daughter from a shooter. Leaving the scene of a crime goes against his training, but protecting Paige Olson and the little girl is more important than following the rules. But now, on the run with mother and child, Miles must figure out what happened to Paige’s ex-husband…and why young Abby won’t say a word. Her usually talkative child’s silence has Paige worried. Is it possible she witnessed something while video chatting with her dad? If only they can convince the little girl to talk, then they might just break the case wide open…and stop the killer who’s stalking them at every turn.

Christmas Conspiracy (First Responders Book 6)

No Amazon quote for this, what’s with that?

All it says is that this book will be released on December 1, 2016. Something slipped by someone, somehow.

Checking the introductory pages: it appears that while a masked man was attempting to abduct a baby from a daycare (for reasons we don’t yet know) the caregiver inadvertently sees his face and is injured in the process. Now, as the only witness she needs protection and the first responder is determined to see she has it.

It sounds interesting so far. And I like this author.

*********************************

Primary Suspect (Callahan Confidential Book 5)

Amazon quote:

Wrongfully Accused

A Callahan Confidential story

When fire investigator Mitch Callahan is attacked at a crime scene, he’s shocked to uncover the body of a slain ex-girlfriend—and realize someone’s framing him for murder.

Widowed ER nurse Dana Petrie believes Mitch is innocent, and not just because he makes her feel alive again after tragedy marred her past. But is she willing to risk everything only to love and lose again?

Lone Star Standoff (Lone Star Justice Book 6)

Amazon quote:

A high-profile trial turns lethal…

The next exciting Lone Star Justice novel

Presiding over the trial of a powerful drug cartel member, Judge Aubrey Madison finds her life threatened, and Texas Ranger Sean McNair isn’t taking any chances.

Protecting the widow and her twins comes naturally to Sean—maybe too naturally for a guy who’s convinced he shouldn’t have a family. But he can’t help wishing for a future with Aubrey…if he can keep her alive.

****************************

Silent Night Suspect (Love Inspired Suspense)

Amazon quote:

Suspected of a crime she knows she didn’t commit…

All she wants for Christmas is to remember.

Blood on her blouse. A gun in her hand. A cartel leader’s dead body in front of her. Widow Asia Stratton can’t remember what happened—just that she’s been framed.

The only way to prove her innocence is to work with her ex-sweetheart, Nebraska state trooper Slade Jackson. But can they clear her name before this Christmas turns even deadlier?

******************************

Fatal Flashback (Love Inspired Suspense)

Amazon quote:

An undercover investigation means deadly danger.

Will an agent’s missing memories save her?

Attacked and left for dead, undercover FBI agent Ashley Thompson has forgotten almost everything about her current assignment.

Now she’s working with park ranger Logan Everett to expose a crime ring—even as she secretly investigates the rangers to root out a mole. But since Logan doesn’t know Ashley’s real identity, is blowing her cover the only way to catch a killer?

******************************

Last one, I promise.

Deception (Mountain Cove Book 6)

Amazon quote:

TRAIL OF SECRETS

Jewel Caraway thought she’d left her mistakes in the past—but then her past arrives at her door. Though she’s thrilled to reunite with her estranged sister, something about her sister’s new husband makes Jewel uneasy. Does he know her secret? Is he the one behind the growing list of attacks against her? And if he is involved…does that mean her sister is, too? With nowhere else to turn, Jewel must rely on police chief Colin Winters—the first man to make the widow question her resolve to never love again. But will he stay by her side when her guarded secrets are revealed?

Mountain Cove: In the Alaskan wilderness, love and danger collide.

********************************

Seven books, six authors. Nice.

The one thing they have in common besides genre is publisher. It will be interesting to see if the same publisher will cause sameness in the stories.

What a coincidence, I’m between books right now (how many times have you heard me say that before?) I am free to read one of these new downloads. Maybe start with an author I’ve not read before.

Bargain books June 26, 2021

This post has gone to the dogs.

BookBub had a bargain suggestion for us and that’s where this gone-to-the-dogs post got it’s start. Thankfully it didn’t end that way. Seals demanded their share of the spotlight.

Scene of the Crime (True Blue K-9 Unit: Brooklyn Book 6)

Amazon quote:

Someone’s out to end her life.

Can the K-9 unit shield her from harm?

Evidence from forensic specialist Darcy Fields could convict a killer—if she survives to testify. A killer seems determined to discredit her, frighten her…and silence her, permanently.

Hounded by the press and stalked by a murderer, Darcy must depend on Officer Jackson Davison and his K-9 partner, Smokey, as danger inches nearer and the trial date closes in.

***************************

I’ve read one book by this next author and would like to try another. The following story looks like a good choice.

Valiant Defender (Military K-9 Unit Book 8)

Amazon quote:

Soldiers track down a serial killer with the help of their brave K-9 partners in this suspenseful romance from New York Times bestselling author Shirlee McCoy, part of the Military K-9 Unit series!

After relentless searching, Captain Justin Blackwood’s closing in on the Red Rose Killer. But when his daughter becomes a target, the hunt turns personal.

With the help of his new partner, Captain Gretchen Hill, and his K-9, Quinn, Justin will race to save his daughter and bring down his nemesis once and for all…or die trying.

******************************

Seals are looking for attention and this next author will give it to them.

Firestorm (Courage Under Fire Book 8)

Amazon quote:

To save her brother’s life, Sarah Hancock must risk everything to find the one man who can bring Blake home. Former Navy SEAL, James Cooper.

Amidst talks of peace and the rise to power of Daniel Pamphili, the unthinkable happens—an attack like no one in Strike Force could have predicted proves the depths in which Pamphili is willing to go to silence Strike Force.

After a daring attempt results in Blake’s rescue, Pamphili steps up his attempts to find Strike Force.

Hiding out in the wilderness of Wyoming, Sarah’s and James’s relationship grows stronger. With the world quickly moving toward unprecedented times, Sarah knows she loves James and she’ll spend whatever time they have left here on earth loving him.

When Pamphili announces his pledge to rebuild the Jewish Temple, he sets in motion events that will mark the beginning of the end.

*******************************

There are no animals involved in this next one, not that I’ve notice so far, anyway. We do still have mysteries though.

Vanished in the Night (Wrangler’s Corner Book 6)

Amazon quote:

Someone is after her and her baby

Danger returns to Wrangler’s Corner

After saving Kaylee Martin from abduction and delivering her baby boy on the side of the road, Dr. Joshua Crawford can’t get them out of his mind.

Unfortunately, neither can Kaylee’s violent stalker. He’ll stop at nothing to get to the new mom and her child. Can Joshua keep them safe so they can become the family he’s dreamed about?

*******************************

I thought we were done but I guess not. How can I turn down another good looking book. We may need to have part two, Oops, I see another one too.

In fact, the more I look the more there are, they just keep keep showing up. There’s no telling when there will be landslide of books. Awesome.

Stay tuned.

Must post

Must post, can’t be breaking the posting streak again so soon.

I’ve only minutes to get this done in time while it’s still today so I’ll talk quick. I had good intentions but my nose was in a book and I lost track of time. Shocking I know.

I was relaxing after an awesome family time to celebrate a high school graduation.

It was fun. We ordered in from a new place serving Middle Eastern food. It was delicious and the portions were huge. Probably because Obby Khan owns it’s and he’s a retired footballer with a footballer appetite. Our boys will eat what the ladies couldn’t.

The evening felt special for our grad and it was even more exciting when a parade of cars dropped by the house with signs, horns blowing and shouts of congratulations.

Tomorrow they will do a drive-through at the school to receive his diploma, dressed in cap and gown accompanied by siblings and proud parents.

Must go.

Here is the book I’m reading…

Free and bargain books June 24, 2021

BookBub has a FREE suggestion for us from one of our regular authors.

A Family’s Blessing: A Sweet Small Town Romance (Love in Millars Crossing Book 2)

Amazon quote:

Sharing with the enemy is almost as bad as falling for them…

Ethan Westerveld wasn’t about to give up half the family farm to a complete stranger no matter how beautiful she was. But the ink was dry, the damage done and nothing could change the fact that Hannah Kristofferson was now fifty percent owner in his family farm.

But only if she stuck around.

Hannah, a born and bred city girl, had zero intentions of living on a farm.

Especially not the farm that was the home place of Sam Westerveld, the only father she had ever known.

A man who had betrayed her and her mother when he walked out on them all those years ago and back to Millars Crossing and the bosom of his tight-knit family and community.

One of the conditions of the will, however, was that Hannah had every right to do what she wanted with her half of the farm if she stayed six months. Stay and she could decide what she wanted to do with her half. Leave and she forfeited any right to the money.

Ethan never expected to have feelings for this headstrong beauty with her heart set on leaving. And Hannah didn’t expect to fall in love with Millars Crossing. Or her infuriatingly charming and handsome co-owner who never met a girl he couldn’t charm.

Hannah is determined to stay the course, but will she lose more than she might gain if she walks away from Ethan and a life that holds more than she ever dared dream of?

I’m currently reading one of yesterday’s downloads, it’s still FREE and it’s fun. It’s also a short read.

Three Little Words (Walker Family): A Novella

Amazon quote:

Ava doesn’t know where her career will lead her next, but she’s starting to suspect she might see Seth as more than a pen pal. Which would be exciting…except for the fact that he only sees her as a friend.

As Maple Valley grows on her, Ava wonders if there might be something here for her even though Seth is unavailable. And maybe, just maybe, after all the words the two of them have exchanged over the years, they’ll finally be able to say the three that matter most.

There were two other downloads yesterday from this same author. They were short reads and I can definitely recommend them as well.
