Read and Enjoyed up to December 5, 2019

Books recently read and enjoyed.

The Highlanders: A Smitten Historical Romance Collection a variety of authors. I was drawn in tighter to some more than others but overall I thoroughly enjoyed the whole collection.

Never underestimate the heart of a Highlander. Four great books.

Night Fox, A Tender Siege, The Year without Summer, and The Violinist

The Highlanders

Sand Creek Serenade Jennifer Uhlarik

This is a book I couldn’t put down. So well written and engaging. One of my favorite reads this week.

One woman with a deep desire to serve and help. One brave who will stop at nothing to save his people. Each willing to die for their beliefs and love for one another. Will their sacrifice be enough?

As a female medical doctor in 1864, Sadie Hoppner is no stranger to tragedy and loss. Cheyenne brave Five Kills wants peace between his people and the American Army. *Amazon quote.

Sand Creek Serenade

The Soldiers of Purple Heart Ranch  Three books written by one author Shanae Johnson

This was such a good read too. It didn’t take me long to get through all three books. And, it’s still on at a bargain price $0.99, a good deal.

THE CORPORAL AND THE CHOIR GIRL, THE PRIVATE AND THE PASTOR’S DAUGHTER, THE SOLDIER AND THE SOCIALITEThe soldiers of the purple heart ranch

Another favorite read, so well done.

Orphaned Hearts (Heart of Africa Series) Marion Ueckermann

When his wife dies in childbirth, Zambian conservationist Simon Hartley pours his life into raising his daughter and his orphan elephants. He has no time, or desire, to fall in love again. Or so he thinks.

Wanting to escape English society and postpone an arranged marriage, Lady Abigail Chadwick heads to Africa for a year to teach the children of the Good Shepherd Orphanage. Upon her arrival she is left stranded at Livingstone airport…until a reluctant Simon comes to her rescue.

Bargain books December 4, 2019

Many of these free and bargain books we talk about are available on other platforms, like Kobo and others. I am so immersed in Amazon and Kindle that I forget to mention it, until I’m reminded of my friends using Kobo. Check it out, if you use another platform and haven’t already gone there.

A bargain ($1.32 CDN) book from BookBub this morning The Heart Hopes Lyn Cote, the Opposites Attract Series.

Here is a small quote from Amazon

What could unite a disgruntled DA and the pretty teacher, responsible for his hung jury? Perhaps a little boy in need of love…

The Heart Hopes

So, as I was browsing to see what else was lurking out there I found some other interesting treasures.

Wreck The Halls: a Worst Detective Ever Christmas novella by Christy Barritt ($1.32 CDN)

a snippet from Amazon – Deck the halls with boughs of . . . danger.

Joey Darling and her friend Starla McKnight are all set to host a new TV Christmas light special. But, before filming even begins, things go awry. Legs—with a human body attached—are sticking out of the family’s chimney, wrecking the feel-good holiday show.

Wreck the Halls

Christy Barritt also has a good selection of other bargain books right now as well. Too many to mention this morning but check it out if you are one of her fans. There are some good deals to be had.

Bargain book December 2, 2019

A Facebook post by Gospel eBooks, for their Daily E-Books Deals, gives us a bargain book  ($1.32CDN) today. Beautiful Storm, book four in the Unfailing Love series. I’ve not read  Mandi Blake before so can’t say whether this will be good or not, but as usual I hope it will be.

Beautiful Storm

Below is part of the Amazon synopsis. It sounds like it could be interesting.

Tori’s life was perfect—a successful job, a doctor for a husband, and a pristine loft in Chicago—until her husband left her for someone else. With her divorce comes a surprise cabin in the Deep South, and she wants nothing more than to get rid of it so she can get her life back in order.

Marcus is the self-appointed guardian of his sister and three brothers, while their mother lives a toxic lifestyle, but one call to his auto repair shop from an entitled city girl turns his world upside down. He’s a master of reading people, but the feisty newcomer poses an interesting challenge.

As a change of pace: A Cozy Mystery mentioned a number of weeks back is a fun read. Foreclosed: A Mitzy Neuhaus Mystery. It’s FREE.

Amazon describes this book as reminiscent of the Legally Blond movies.  She is well-intentioned, beautiful, slightly clueless, and really, really good at what she does – which is selling homes in Portland, Oregon.

This book showed up for me 6 years ago. I’m tempted to read it again.

Foreclosed

Currently, I’m reading Forget Me Now an Alana Terry thriller. It’s frustrating me. The timeline keeps moving back and forth, but the confusing action (or maybe it’s the description of the action) is causing the most frustration. I’m just not getting it. I’m going to move on, maybe try again later on just to make sure it really doesn’t work for me.

Forget me now

I think Sand Creek Serenade will be next up. Unfortunately it has gone back to full price, although, it is free if you subscribe to Kindle Unlimited. I’ve read the first chapter and so far I’m hooked.

Sand Creek Serenade

A female doctor in a male dominated, old time, Army Fort has to be strong. Sadie Hoppner can definitely hold her own with the soldiers, if given half a chance. She’s a good doctor and appreciates the chance to work alongside her brother.

She’s also curious, wanting to meet the women living and working in the recently appearing nomadic camp. Before an opportunity can present itself a dog steals her shoe and runs with it. Headed back to their camp to tease his owner. He plays keep-away with the shoe enticing Five Kills to follow him back to the fort where he will drop the shoe beside Sadie. The dog seems to be a bit of a match maker.

We’re off to a good start.

Free book December 1, 2019

Author Chautona Havig made another suggestion, today.  Ghost of a Girl  is FREE It’s Young Adult (YA) and a Novelette. The beginning story in a new series The Good Shadows. Carol Alwood is a new author to me so I can’t make any comments on what this will be like. It looks like it’s worth a shot to me though.

Part of the synopsis on Amazon says…

He may be a mortician’s son, but that doesn’t mean he’s seen a ghost. Until one night…

Sixteen-year-old Owen Parker stays busy with his family’s business, playing basketball and keeping up his grades. But he’s never too busy for his friend and secret crush, Violet Blackstone. Lately, Violet is acting strange spending time with new friends, talking about going to parties, and blowing off plans to hang out. Owen forgives Violet for testing their friendship, but it still hurts.

Ghost of a Girl

I’m looking forward to checking out this book.

That’s it for free books today. It’s been a slow day for new material. Catch up time!

Currently I’m reading The Soldiers of Purple Heart Ranch book two.

Book one was The Corporal and the Choir Girl. Brandon is spending time at Purple Heart Ranch with his fellow Special Unit members, healing from a mission gone wrong. One of their four members disappeared in the unexpected blast. He is considered dead even though they can find no trace of his remains.

The three reach the ranch with a mission that’s two fold. Healing is one part but the painful part will be telling Reegan (gardener at the ranch) that her twin brother (the only remaining member of her family) is considered to be dead.

Afternoon church service surrounded by friends seems like the kindest place for her to hear the traumatic news. Brandon is captivated and filled with inner peace at the sound of the voice of an angel in the choir. Reegan’s voice silences the inner turmoil of guilt and flashbacks for the first time since the blast took his friend. He feels peace even though they have still have the telling ahead of them.

Reegan can’t accept their decree Reece is dead. She’s always had a sense of her brother’s presence and she can feel he’s still alive. Something’s wrong but he’s alive. She won’t accept the guilt Brandon feels either. Instead there’s this strong pull of inspiration to comfort him.

This collection is still a bargain today at $0.99. Grab a copy if you haven’t already.

I’ll need to post about read & enjoyed books again soon

In the meantime Happy Reading.

Bargain Books November 30, 2019

Suggestions from another author this morning. Jennifer Youngblood has several interesting bargain collections for us.

The Christmas Bliss Collection (three books) is a bargain at 1.29 CDN The cover gives a light hearted fluff appearance but the synopsis holds a little more weight so I’ve downloaded this one to check it out.

The Christmas Bliss collection

Jennifer’s, The Cozy Fire Collection has five books, with 1075 total pages, a good deal at $1.32 CDN. The synopsis for these looks interesting too, so that’s another one added to my TBR list. I’m not looking for any more today, eight books between two collections will keep me busy for a while. It is tempting, though.

The Cozy Fire Collection

I’m currently reading Jane By The Book and it is living up to my expectations. It’s still FREE if you haven’t downloaded a copy.

Jane by The Book

Jane has arrived in England. Her friends new old Inn is beautiful and she’s excited about the business possibilities. She’s met Titus, the hyperactive mystery writer. He’s noticed she has her own mystery to solve for an illusive ancestor named Jane. He’s poking his nose into her business and she’s not sure she likes it, or him, very much.  Must see where this goes.

Happy Saturday and Happy Reading.

Free & bargain books November 29, 2019

A FREE book mentioned by one of my regular author contacts is written by popular author, Pepper Basham. Chautona Havig and Pepper often contribute to the same collections and I always like what they come up with. I know I will enjoy this new story too.

Jane By The Book

Healing from the shame of a wedding day that didn’t end in a marriage, Jane relocated and spent the last four years working in the grand old B & B of a friend.

The job has grown with her and she’s become expert at successfully managing the housekeeping end of a thriving hotel business. This skill, while confidence building, has created a problem for her. Her boss/friend (Nora) has roped Jane into helping her fiancé (Ethan) train staff for his newly acquired hotel in England. He is paying all of her expenses and it’s been years since she’s done any travelling, maybe it’s time to step out and explore new places. With that decided, she’s feeling quietly excited.

It doesn’t take long for Titus to enter the scene and turn her orderly life upside down. Unexpectedly, he finds dramatic changes in his life as well. The fiction stories ever consuming his attention suddenly aren’t quite as alluring as real life.

This sounds like a fun read.

Jane by The Book

BookRunes FREE suggestion today is Orphaned Hearts (A Heart of Africa Romance) Conservationist, Simon Hartley is left with a daughter to raise when his wife dies in childbirth. In his grief, his daughter and orphan elephants become his whole life.

Lady Abigail Chadwick wants to escape English society and postpone an arranged marriage. A year spent teaching in Africa’s Good Shepherd Orphanage will make this happen for her.

He is not thrilled about having to rescue a traveller stranded at the airport but he does it.

Orphaned Hearts

Free and bargain books November 28, 2019

Two very different but interesting read suggestions from BookBub this morning.

The first one is a bargain at $0.99 and is a three book Romance collection.

The Soldiers of the Purple Heart Ranch

The mission of Purple Heart Ranch is rehabilitation for soldiers suffering PTSD. The love stories envisioned by author Shanae Johnson have added depth to them with brokenness in the lives of all the characters, not just the soldiers. Her disclaimer at the beginning of book 1 acknowledges that it takes more than love to bring healing to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder but she feels love goes a long way toward making it happen. I think she’s right. Love does have special healing qualities. Especially when paired with other therapies.

I’m a fan of love stories with depth. This should be good.

The soldiers of the purple heart ranch

The second BookBub suggestion is FREE

The Unveiling

A historical novel with knights and wars and kingdoms needing heirs. The story of a sister out for revenge in the unjust death of her brother. Four years she spends learning to be a warrior then disguises herself as a squire (a guy) to gain access to his murderer.

Once she has him in her presence, doubts arise. Does she truly have all the facts straight?

The Unveiling

Last but not least:

BookRunes has a FREE suggestion this morning.

Love’s Thankful Heart is a three book collection of Amish love stories. With three different authors I don’t recall reading before. The recurring underlying theme in each romance seems to be finding a way to help the less fortunate.

Most often, the Amish live in community, with their own language, culture, and rules of conduct. Farming is the preferred way of life, using the methods of bygone days. Horse and buggy, with a shunning of modern conveniences. Their language is similar to German and some of their common words are sprinkled liberally throughout the story. At least that’s how it is in this first one anyway.

All things Amish have become very popular in the last decade or two and many books have been written from their point of view. This collection looks to be a soft introduction into their world, if you are new to reading their stories.

Love's Thankful Heart

Another day of Happy Reading

Free LPC books November 27, 2019

Possibly the last FREE LPC (Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas) ebook blast of the year. It’s hard to believe this year of 2019 is coming to a close already. It feels like it’s barely started. I still find myself about to write 2018 every now and again. To think that a decade is coming to a close as well, is even harder to imagine.

If this is LPCs last big push of the year we will have to savor these books and make them last into the new year. Mind you, we have other sources so we won’t panic, but we can be a little sad.

The Highlanders  The Highlanders: A Smitten Historical Romance Collection written by four authors. I’ve read and enjoyed one of the authors –  J’Nell Ciesielski. I’m looking forward to this collection if her previous work is any indication of what’s in store for us. I’m sure it is gong to be good.

Night Fox a love story set in Ireland 1715

A Tender Siege set in the USA 1763

The Year Without Summer set in Scotland 1816

The Violinist set in Idaho, USA 1915

Practically Married  Practically Married is a book I’ve read and enjoyed. I think it was offered as pre-release, you had to sign up for the authors email list to get it.

The story starts with an online relationship.

Tom and Ashley decided to meet in person (they had only talked by video) and marry soon. Ashley sold her house, quit her job, and packed up for the move to his state. Only, he didn’t arrive at the airport to pick her up as planned. Finally improvising, she made her way to his house in time to find he had died in an accident and the existence of a girlfriend was news to his family.

She may have been a surprise but the shocker was to find he had inadvertently willed her the farmhouse he shared with his cousin and farming partner.

With all these new revelations it seems she didn’t know him as well as she thought she did. Now she’s legally tied to his large family and no one is happy about it. She is a fixer, maybe she think of a way to make the situation work out well for everyone.

Murder in the Family  Murder in the Family is another book I’ve read and enjoyed. Probably through another pre-release offer.

Molly is a professional storm chaser and hasn’t been home to visit her dysfunctional family in years. She wouldn’t be here now except her beloved aunt died and named Molly sole beneficiary of her estate. Her death is a shock but the reading of her will is a much bigger shock.

The level of family greed is legendary. She wants no part in any of it. Except, she’s backed into a corner with the terms of the will. There is another choice that would let her walk away but it’s not one she’s willing to accept.

To make matters worse her aunt was a hoarder and the house is a dumping place for everyone’s things. The stuffed full interior smells like something died, the last roommate has disappeared, and – the family is convinced there’s buried treasure in the house and it’s their right to come in and take it.

Molly isn’t afraid to chase tornados but she doesn’t feel like she has the courage to stand up to the abusive members of her family. Her aunt seems to think she is the only one in the family who does have the courage.

Among the Poppies  Among The Poppies was a book on our FREE list a couple of days ago. It’s worth considering again though.

Below is part of what I said about this book on the 25th. This story is a good read.

Gwyn has learned, and learned to love, auto mechanics living life close to the side of her chauffeur father. She’s also learned the art of being a lady at the hands of her benefactress and father’s employer. Social norms of the day are restrictive, a woman driving and fixing automobiles was just not done. Gwyn doesn’t care about any of that. There is a desperate need for ambulance drivers with mechanics to keep them on the road. Gwyn has the skills to do both and she plans to answer the call.

Among the Poppies is written by one of the authors involved with the first book collection today.

Sand Creek Serenade  Sand Creek Serenade sounds like a book I’ve read but I’m not seeing it in my list. In any event, I enjoyed the book I did read and I have plans to read and enjoy this one too.

Part of the synopsis on Amazon:

One woman with a deep desire to serve and help. One brave who will stop at nothing to save his people. Each willing to die for their beliefs and love for one another. Will their sacrifice be enough?

As a female medical doctor in 1864, Sadie Hoppner is no stranger to tragedy and loss. While she grapples with the difficulties of practicing medicine at a Colorado outpost, she learns that finding acceptance and respect proves especially difficult at Fort Lyon.

Cheyenne brave Five Kills wants peace between his people and the American Army.

Answering the Call Answering the Call is a devotional written…

Based on the author’s experiences as a paramedic, these inspirational devotionals tap into the concerns and issues that trouble men and women serving as first responders. First responders answer the call. (quote from Amazon)

This topic is dear to my heart as I’ve never forgotten my five years spent several decades ago as first responder in a small town. The experience provided a little taste of what it would be like as a full time career first responder in a larger area. Not an easy life. There are many life changing things you can’t unsee, yet your heart of compassion wants to be there for others in times of crisis.

It’s true, career first responders are unsung heroes. I expect this book will give us a little glimpse into the lives they lead. I know the glimpse will lead to appreciation, especially if we ever have need of their services. Remembering a little of how it is for them will deepen our appreciation.

While I took a break from this post to let it settle a bit before publishing, I was thinking back over my experiences on ambulance. I did face fatalities of different kinds, from time to time, but I was spared the difficult scenes of massive injury. I covered many shifts due to my availability as a stay-at-home mom and the only call with car crash trauma that should have been mine was covered by a crew mate who needed to trade shifts with me for that day. I was sorry about the accident but grateful to have been spared the call.

A decade or so earlier while listening to a nurse friend (in another small town many miles further west) talk about riding ambulance, this feeling of horror came over me at the thought of having to do such a job. It’s funny how it goes sometimes. Who knew that one day I would agree to the same job because the town needed me.

I’m grateful to have been spared horrendous scenes that would live forever in my memory. At the same time though I have many rewarding memories of being there when patients with health issues needed help. If I had it to do over again, knowing what I know, I would say yes in a heart beat.

I think my deepest appreciation for first responders comes more from what I know I didn’t experience rather than from what I did. I’m looking forward to reading Answering the Call, to see life from someone else’s perspective.

So, getting back to the subject of books. Enjoy the latest interesting and FREE offerings from LPC Books and we look forward to seeing more from them in the new year.

Happy Reading

Bargain books November 26, 2019

BookBub started it all this morning with several bargain books.

The first bargain ($0.99) is from a new favorite author Alana Terry. Forget Me Now is the gripping suspense story of a young woman who’s lost a portion her memory through brain injury trauma. She’s has no idea what’s happened to her and no ability to retain new memories when she does figure things out. Everyone close to her is dead and it’s clear she’s next.  There are some tense moments in store for her and for us.

Forget me now

The second bargain book ($1.99)  is a change of pace. In The Field of Grace is a retelling of the story of Ruth and Boaz. This tale is popular with authors and there have been many versions written through the years. This one seems to be from a different point of view, which is new. It’s usually told from Ruth’s perspective with Boaz taking a minor role. This time, the story starts out from his point of view, immediately catching my interest.

I don’t know this author but I’m looking forward to the experience.

In the Field of Grace

And finally, an Amazon suggested bargain book ($1.99) is a beloved collection from iconic Canadian author Janette Oke. We’ve been reading and watching movies of her pioneer stories for decades. This Canadian West Collection contains six of her most popular books.

Canadian West Collection

1 When Calls the Heart
2 When Comes the Spring
3 When Breaks the Dawn
4 When Hope Springs New
5 Beyond the Gathering Storm
6 When Tomorrow Comes

My video stash still has the movie box collection for three of these popular books. It’s nice to bring them out again every now and then.

Happy Reading.

Today is Grey Cup parade through the city of Winnipeg.  People are out in droves to honour the win of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers football team and the energy level is high. I’m loving the internet live stream for those of us not able to be there in person. I think I will wait awhile to read. It’s been twenty nine years since their last championship win so this could be the parade of a lifetime, definitely not is to be missed.

CJOB live is the place to find it if you follow Canadian football.
