Free books December 14, 2019

BookRunes has one FREE book for us today. Courage Dares Sisters of Spirit book 4

I’ve read the first three chapters and I’m hooked. It is definitely gripping suspense.

Here is Amazon’s comment.

OVERVIEW;
A tragic past; a dangerous present.
A cliffhanger on real cliffs.
The fighter pilot and the peace-loving mapmaker.

Courage Dares

I haven’t read this author – I’m hoping the story don’t disappoint but turns out to be as good as I think it is.

I’m currently reading, and loving, Peg Leg’s Princess. It’s still FREE if you need it.

There is more to this book than the cover suggests. A feisty little woman running from a mean step-father. A wounded soldier who thinks no woman would ever want him. She’s loved him since he saved her life ten years ago and she has no intention of letting him hold onto his misguided ideas. She has time. There is a guest ranch to keep them busy while he figures it out.

Peg Leg's Princess

Happy Reading on this chilly weekend.

I heard a comment on the radio the other day. Talking about some people surviving winter better than others. The opinion was that some don’t do winter better, they just dress warmer. That’s me today. It’s currently -24c outside, feels like -31c with the wind chill. I’m feeling the cool more than usual in the house today for some reason. Four warm layers plus a heavy fleece winter bath robe. Toasty.

Free books December 13, 2019

Some days are just full of treasures! This is one of those days. I didn’t mean to look for free books. I was just closing out an Amazon page left open from earlier, researching a book mentioned in my last post. My curiosity wouldn’t let me leave without checking the book ribbon at the bottom of the page. I’m so glad I took the time. I think I’ve found some gems.

Whisper – The Pete Zendel Suspense Series. A regular family. An old secret. And a dangerous enemy collide. Who will stand? (Amazon quote)

Whisper

Bespoke: a Tiny Christmas Tale

While the elusive Secret Symphony of Giovanni St. John captivated the world’s fascination, it left his daughter closed away in the Silent House – she, the one who holds the fullness of truth about the ninth symphony. Now Aria St. John is determined to not only break free of the loss that has defined her, but to honor her father through one final gift in his last days. (Amazon quote)

Bespoke

Redemption’s Edge – Redemption Mountain series book 1.

Someone says on Amazon – “A heartwarming, passionate story of loss, forgiveness, and redemption set in the untamed frontier during the tumultuous years following the Civil War. Ms. Davies’ engaging and complex characters draw you in from the start, creating an exciting introduction to this new historical western romance series.”

Redemption's Edge

Made For Each OtherGrandma Mandy Series book 1

When Lissa arrives in New Mexico, her grandmother is recovering from a mild illness so Grandma’s young friend, Jason, picks Lissa up from the airport. Though Lissa’s attraction to him is immediate, she refuses to be tempted into romance with a man in a creative profession. (Amazon quote)

Made for Each Oher

BookRunes has a FREE book today, A Merry Little Christmas, and it looks intriguing.

A Merry Little Christmas

A Merry Little Christmas is about Franny Martin—a woman who isn’t afraid to dream big. But most of all, A Merry Little Christmas is a love story about two people who come from different worlds. Charlie is all wealth and polish while Franny is a simple farm girl who has more spirit than money. In the process of making a “trading places” arrangement between them, they unearth some discoveries of the heart—that sometimes love comes when you’re least ready for it, and that love can bring the most impossible dreams within reach. (Amazon quote)

It seems crazy to mention more books than I can possibly read but… they have to be grabbed quickly, before they disappear, never to be found again. That happened to me yesterday. There were several suggested books I wanted to check out but when I clicked to a new screen by mistake – they were gone. Clicking the back button didn’t help. They slipped into the black hole… GONE. Grab them quick, while you can. That’s my daily cry of encouragement.

Happy Reading everyone!

Bargain book collections December 10, 2019

It’s a slow day for books from Bookbub, BookRunes, and LPC books but there are still a couple of new bargain book collections to talk about.

The 12 Mysteries of Christmas is just that  – twelve books. Well, novellas really, as they are about 100 pages each. Susette Williams and Alexa Verde are two authors showing up regularly for me, I like their books so I think this will be good a cozy-mystery read. It’s a bargain at $1.31 CDN

The twelve Mysteries of Christmas

We are going from Christmas to summer with the next collection. A little warmth to take our minds off the sunny, glittery, frigid weather we are experiencing here today. I have read book 1 but it’s been a few years.

A Summer Romance Collection, a bargain at $1.32 CDN

I’m currently reading A Tuscan Legacy and I’m up to book 4 and loving this collection. Each book is the unique love story of one of the cousins. And there is an intriguing thread of mystery winding it’s way through each book. It adds to the allure of the story. We will have to wait until the end, though, to discover the closely guarded family secret that’s lasted for two generations.

It’s still a bargain at $1.32 CDN if you don’t have a copy yet.

Free and bargain books December 09, 2019

BookBub has a free one for us this morning.

Remembering Christmas is FREE. I’m drawing a blank on this one, although it seems I did read it in 2012. There are other Dan Walsh books in my collection of downloads too and I’ve read most of them by the looks of it. I’ll have to pay better attention this time.

Remembering Christmas

Rick has a life that doesn’t include his parents. He’s never liked his step father and when his mother begs him to come home he reluctantly agrees. Her husband’s stroke leaves her needing help running the family bookstore, a chore Rick is not thrilled about.

********

As promised, here is another installment of the bargain book collections I found on Amazon yesterday.

A Date With Danger, a six book, 1406 page, Romantic/Suspense collection, a bargain at $1.32 CDN. Reading through the blurbs on Amazon, it looks as though this may be a fun read, in places. I think it may have to go the top of my TBR pile. Digging a little deeper into my reading experiences, it appears I’ve read several of these books along the way somewhere. I guess that’s not too surprising as contributors will sometimes go with manuscripts already published.

A Date With Danger

The fun one will be the last one. Delilah Morgan’s dying husband wants to protect her from future suitors lacking his approval so he arranges for the local judge to court her, when the time is right. Unfortunately, he doesn’t remember to share the news of this arrangement with his wife who is, decidedly, not looking to be courted.

*******

A Tuscan Legacy will keep us busy with nine books plus a novella. A good deal at $1.33

A Tuscan Legacy

Amazon quote:

When Isabella Rossi invites each of her adult grandchildren to her estate in the Tuscan hills for her eightieth birthday, she hopes to reunite a family fractured by distance, death, and secrets.

The birthday gift of a painting, arriving unsigned and with no sender’s details, rips open old heartbreak. One family secret has already been revealed, her youngest son Albertino’s illegitimate English daughter. Now it seems there could be yet more secrets.

Returning home, the cousins, scattered across three continents, each discover their lifetime love. When they gather again at the villa as summer ends, the remaining secrets are revealed. But can they be forgiven, or will the mistakes of the past be repeated?

Sounds interesting.

A bargain at $0.99 The Christmas Dog a mangy stubborn dog and a new perspective for a bitter old woman.

Read and Enjoyed up to December 5, 2019

Books recently read and enjoyed.

The Highlanders: A Smitten Historical Romance Collection a variety of authors. I was drawn in tighter to some more than others but overall I thoroughly enjoyed the whole collection.

Never underestimate the heart of a Highlander. Four great books.

Night Fox, A Tender Siege, The Year without Summer, and The Violinist

The Highlanders

Sand Creek Serenade Jennifer Uhlarik

This is a book I couldn’t put down. So well written and engaging. One of my favorite reads this week.

One woman with a deep desire to serve and help. One brave who will stop at nothing to save his people. Each willing to die for their beliefs and love for one another. Will their sacrifice be enough?

As a female medical doctor in 1864, Sadie Hoppner is no stranger to tragedy and loss. Cheyenne brave Five Kills wants peace between his people and the American Army. *Amazon quote.

Sand Creek Serenade

The Soldiers of Purple Heart Ranch  Three books written by one author Shanae Johnson

This was such a good read too. It didn’t take me long to get through all three books. And, it’s still on at a bargain price $0.99, a good deal.

THE CORPORAL AND THE CHOIR GIRL, THE PRIVATE AND THE PASTOR’S DAUGHTER, THE SOLDIER AND THE SOCIALITEThe soldiers of the purple heart ranch

Another favorite read, so well done.

Orphaned Hearts (Heart of Africa Series) Marion Ueckermann

When his wife dies in childbirth, Zambian conservationist Simon Hartley pours his life into raising his daughter and his orphan elephants. He has no time, or desire, to fall in love again. Or so he thinks.

Wanting to escape English society and postpone an arranged marriage, Lady Abigail Chadwick heads to Africa for a year to teach the children of the Good Shepherd Orphanage. Upon her arrival she is left stranded at Livingstone airport…until a reluctant Simon comes to her rescue.

Bargain books December 4, 2019

Many of these free and bargain books we talk about are available on other platforms, like Kobo and others. I am so immersed in Amazon and Kindle that I forget to mention it, until I’m reminded of my friends using Kobo. Check it out, if you use another platform and haven’t already gone there.

A bargain ($1.32 CDN) book from BookBub this morning The Heart Hopes Lyn Cote, the Opposites Attract Series.

Here is a small quote from Amazon

What could unite a disgruntled DA and the pretty teacher, responsible for his hung jury? Perhaps a little boy in need of love…

The Heart Hopes

So, as I was browsing to see what else was lurking out there I found some other interesting treasures.

Wreck The Halls: a Worst Detective Ever Christmas novella by Christy Barritt ($1.32 CDN)

a snippet from Amazon – Deck the halls with boughs of . . . danger.

Joey Darling and her friend Starla McKnight are all set to host a new TV Christmas light special. But, before filming even begins, things go awry. Legs—with a human body attached—are sticking out of the family’s chimney, wrecking the feel-good holiday show.

Wreck the Halls

Christy Barritt also has a good selection of other bargain books right now as well. Too many to mention this morning but check it out if you are one of her fans. There are some good deals to be had.

Bargain book December 2, 2019

A Facebook post by Gospel eBooks, for their Daily E-Books Deals, gives us a bargain book  ($1.32CDN) today. Beautiful Storm, book four in the Unfailing Love series. I’ve not read  Mandi Blake before so can’t say whether this will be good or not, but as usual I hope it will be.

Beautiful Storm

Below is part of the Amazon synopsis. It sounds like it could be interesting.

Tori’s life was perfect—a successful job, a doctor for a husband, and a pristine loft in Chicago—until her husband left her for someone else. With her divorce comes a surprise cabin in the Deep South, and she wants nothing more than to get rid of it so she can get her life back in order.

Marcus is the self-appointed guardian of his sister and three brothers, while their mother lives a toxic lifestyle, but one call to his auto repair shop from an entitled city girl turns his world upside down. He’s a master of reading people, but the feisty newcomer poses an interesting challenge.

As a change of pace: A Cozy Mystery mentioned a number of weeks back is a fun read. Foreclosed: A Mitzy Neuhaus Mystery. It’s FREE.

Amazon describes this book as reminiscent of the Legally Blond movies.  She is well-intentioned, beautiful, slightly clueless, and really, really good at what she does – which is selling homes in Portland, Oregon.

This book showed up for me 6 years ago. I’m tempted to read it again.

Foreclosed

Currently, I’m reading Forget Me Now an Alana Terry thriller. It’s frustrating me. The timeline keeps moving back and forth, but the confusing action (or maybe it’s the description of the action) is causing the most frustration. I’m just not getting it. I’m going to move on, maybe try again later on just to make sure it really doesn’t work for me.

Forget me now

I think Sand Creek Serenade will be next up. Unfortunately it has gone back to full price, although, it is free if you subscribe to Kindle Unlimited. I’ve read the first chapter and so far I’m hooked.

Sand Creek Serenade

A female doctor in a male dominated, old time, Army Fort has to be strong. Sadie Hoppner can definitely hold her own with the soldiers, if given half a chance. She’s a good doctor and appreciates the chance to work alongside her brother.

She’s also curious, wanting to meet the women living and working in the recently appearing nomadic camp. Before an opportunity can present itself a dog steals her shoe and runs with it. Headed back to their camp to tease his owner. He plays keep-away with the shoe enticing Five Kills to follow him back to the fort where he will drop the shoe beside Sadie. The dog seems to be a bit of a match maker.

We’re off to a good start.

Free and bargain books November 28, 2019

Two very different but interesting read suggestions from BookBub this morning.

The first one is a bargain at $0.99 and is a three book Romance collection.

The Soldiers of the Purple Heart Ranch

The mission of Purple Heart Ranch is rehabilitation for soldiers suffering PTSD. The love stories envisioned by author Shanae Johnson have added depth to them with brokenness in the lives of all the characters, not just the soldiers. Her disclaimer at the beginning of book 1 acknowledges that it takes more than love to bring healing to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder but she feels love goes a long way toward making it happen. I think she’s right. Love does have special healing qualities. Especially when paired with other therapies.

I’m a fan of love stories with depth. This should be good.

The soldiers of the purple heart ranch

The second BookBub suggestion is FREE

The Unveiling

A historical novel with knights and wars and kingdoms needing heirs. The story of a sister out for revenge in the unjust death of her brother. Four years she spends learning to be a warrior then disguises herself as a squire (a guy) to gain access to his murderer.

Once she has him in her presence, doubts arise. Does she truly have all the facts straight?

The Unveiling

Last but not least:

BookRunes has a FREE suggestion this morning.

Love’s Thankful Heart is a three book collection of Amish love stories. With three different authors I don’t recall reading before. The recurring underlying theme in each romance seems to be finding a way to help the less fortunate.

Most often, the Amish live in community, with their own language, culture, and rules of conduct. Farming is the preferred way of life, using the methods of bygone days. Horse and buggy, with a shunning of modern conveniences. Their language is similar to German and some of their common words are sprinkled liberally throughout the story. At least that’s how it is in this first one anyway.

All things Amish have become very popular in the last decade or two and many books have been written from their point of view. This collection looks to be a soft introduction into their world, if you are new to reading their stories.

Free LPC books November 27, 2019

Possibly the last FREE LPC (Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas) ebook blast of the year. It’s hard to believe this year of 2019 is coming to a close already. It feels like it’s barely started. I still find myself about to write 2018 every now and again. To think that a decade is coming to a close as well, is even harder to imagine.

If this is LPCs last big push of the year we will have to savor these books and make them last into the new year. Mind you, we have other sources so we won’t panic, but we can be a little sad.

The Highlanders  The Highlanders: A Smitten Historical Romance Collection written by four authors. I’ve read and enjoyed one of the authors –  J’Nell Ciesielski. I’m looking forward to this collection if her previous work is any indication of what’s in store for us. I’m sure it is gong to be good.

Night Fox a love story set in Ireland 1715

A Tender Siege set in the USA 1763

The Year Without Summer set in Scotland 1816

The Violinist set in Idaho, USA 1915

Practically Married  Practically Married is a book I’ve read and enjoyed. I think it was offered as pre-release, you had to sign up for the authors email list to get it.

The story starts with an online relationship.

Tom and Ashley decided to meet in person (they had only talked by video) and marry soon. Ashley sold her house, quit her job, and packed up for the move to his state. Only, he didn’t arrive at the airport to pick her up as planned. Finally improvising, she made her way to his house in time to find he had died in an accident and the existence of a girlfriend was news to his family.

She may have been a surprise but the shocker was to find he had inadvertently willed her the farmhouse he shared with his cousin and farming partner.

With all these new revelations it seems she didn’t know him as well as she thought she did. Now she’s legally tied to his large family and no one is happy about it. She is a fixer, maybe she think of a way to make the situation work out well for everyone.

Murder in the Family  Murder in the Family is another book I’ve read and enjoyed. Probably through another pre-release offer.

Molly is a professional storm chaser and hasn’t been home to visit her dysfunctional family in years. She wouldn’t be here now except her beloved aunt died and named Molly sole beneficiary of her estate. Her death is a shock but the reading of her will is a much bigger shock.

The level of family greed is legendary. She wants no part in any of it. Except, she’s backed into a corner with the terms of the will. There is another choice that would let her walk away but it’s not one she’s willing to accept.

To make matters worse her aunt was a hoarder and the house is a dumping place for everyone’s things. The stuffed full interior smells like something died, the last roommate has disappeared, and – the family is convinced there’s buried treasure in the house and it’s their right to come in and take it.

Molly isn’t afraid to chase tornados but she doesn’t feel like she has the courage to stand up to the abusive members of her family. Her aunt seems to think she is the only one in the family who does have the courage.

Among the Poppies  Among The Poppies was a book on our FREE list a couple of days ago. It’s worth considering again though.

Below is part of what I said about this book on the 25th. This story is a good read.

Gwyn has learned, and learned to love, auto mechanics living life close to the side of her chauffeur father. She’s also learned the art of being a lady at the hands of her benefactress and father’s employer. Social norms of the day are restrictive, a woman driving and fixing automobiles was just not done. Gwyn doesn’t care about any of that. There is a desperate need for ambulance drivers with mechanics to keep them on the road. Gwyn has the skills to do both and she plans to answer the call.

Among the Poppies is written by one of the authors involved with the first book collection today.

Sand Creek Serenade  Sand Creek Serenade sounds like a book I’ve read but I’m not seeing it in my list. In any event, I enjoyed the book I did read and I have plans to read and enjoy this one too.

Part of the synopsis on Amazon:

One woman with a deep desire to serve and help. One brave who will stop at nothing to save his people. Each willing to die for their beliefs and love for one another. Will their sacrifice be enough?

As a female medical doctor in 1864, Sadie Hoppner is no stranger to tragedy and loss. While she grapples with the difficulties of practicing medicine at a Colorado outpost, she learns that finding acceptance and respect proves especially difficult at Fort Lyon.

Cheyenne brave Five Kills wants peace between his people and the American Army.

Answering the Call Answering the Call is a devotional written…

Based on the author’s experiences as a paramedic, these inspirational devotionals tap into the concerns and issues that trouble men and women serving as first responders. First responders answer the call. (quote from Amazon)

This topic is dear to my heart as I’ve never forgotten my five years spent several decades ago as first responder in a small town. The experience provided a little taste of what it would be like as a full time career first responder in a larger area. Not an easy life. There are many life changing things you can’t unsee, yet your heart of compassion wants to be there for others in times of crisis.

It’s true, career first responders are unsung heroes. I expect this book will give us a little glimpse into the lives they lead. I know the glimpse will lead to appreciation, especially if we ever have need of their services. Remembering a little of how it is for them will deepen our appreciation.

While I took a break from this post to let it settle a bit before publishing, I was thinking back over my experiences on ambulance. I did face fatalities of different kinds, from time to time, but I was spared the difficult scenes of massive injury. I covered many shifts due to my availability as a stay-at-home mom and the only call with car crash trauma that should have been mine was covered by a crew mate who needed to trade shifts with me for that day. I was sorry about the accident but grateful to have been spared the call.

A decade or so earlier while listening to a nurse friend (in another small town many miles further west) talk about riding ambulance, this feeling of horror came over me at the thought of having to do such a job. It’s funny how it goes sometimes. Who knew that one day I would agree to the same job because the town needed me.

I’m grateful to have been spared horrendous scenes that would live forever in my memory. At the same time though I have many rewarding memories of being there when patients with health issues needed help. If I had it to do over again, knowing what I know, I would say yes in a heart beat.

I think my deepest appreciation for first responders comes more from what I know I didn’t experience rather than from what I did. I’m looking forward to reading Answering the Call, to see life from someone else’s perspective.

So, getting back to the subject of books. Enjoy the latest interesting and FREE offerings from LPC Books and we look forward to seeing more from them in the new year.

Happy Reading
