Free books October 29, 2019

Two Free books, one from yesterday and a new one today.

One of yesterday’s books was All of You and I was uncertain about it because the author was unfamiliar. Well, I’m reading it and loving it. It’s still FREE so I had to mention it again.

All of You

Jack (Jacqueline) restores vintage planes and, she is in danger at the hands of an abusive ex-fiancé. There is a parallel story in this tale – the life of WWII women delivering aircraft to wherever they are needed to help win the war.

A client is contracting Jack to restore a fighter plane used in the Second World War. The present and past are connected somehow. I haven’t read far enough to have that figured out yet.

In the meantime, her deployed brother is desperate to make sure his sister is protected from her abuser. He’s begged/guilted his wounded and sidelined partner Michael into providing her protection. A challenge. The difficulty with this plan: aside from the impairment of his injuries, she’s resisting his help.

This story has pulled me in, no question. Had to share.

The second FREE book looks interesting, after checking it out a little.

Deadly Alliances

I’m not sure about this one either but the first few pages drew me in.

Her brother is in witness protection for living through the murder of his young colleague. The shooter locked eyes with him and would have killed Prosecutor Reilly Tanner too if sirens hadn’t arrived in time to scare him off .

Even in protection, Reilly’s life is in danger of  assassins and his sister is determined to find ways protect him.

Meet Milana Tanner, Deputy US Marshall.

It will be interesting to see if this keeps me reading all the way through. I hope it does.

Happy Reading, everyone!

P.S. it’s snowing 🙂

Free book October 27, 2019

If you are into thrillers, Nick Thacker has one on free this morning, The Jefferson Legacy (brought to my attention by BookBub.)

I started following Nick Thacker in 2016, although I must admit I haven’t kept it up. He enjoys connecting with his followers and puts a lot of effort into it. I was engaged at first but couldn’t keep up with his pace and all the new books he puts out. I would encourage you to follow him if you are looking for authors who like a lot of interaction.

I enjoy thrillers, now and again. That’s the part that causes trouble, the now and again. My capacity to read thrillers is smaller than my tendency to download them. My TBR pile is daunting and I’ve given up hope, trying to keep up. I justify the downloads with the I’m supporting the authors argument. And who knows, maybe I will read them someday.

I’ve downloaded five of Nick’s books and read two. The thing I like most about his writing – his imagination. Many times, reading The Amazon Code, I was left thinking – how do you come up with this stuff? There is one scene indelibly impressed on my mind. Harvey Bennett (protagonist) is running for his life and finds himself trapped in a jungle canyon with absolutely no where to go. I think… he’s dead. Not. Nick’s mind figured a bizarre way out and, amazingly, it works.

There is nothing predictable in the two books I did read.

Free books for October 23, 2019

Exciting news, the email is here for LPC Books (Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas.) There is a tight timeline on these offers, they will only be available through the 25th so you will need to hurry.

Fall Flip is a recently published book. There was a pre-publish copy available from the author a number of weeks ago and this book is on my read (red) and enjoyed list. Several months ago if I remember correctly.

Fall Flip

Remnants, and its author Stan Poel, sounds familiar to me but I’m not finding it quickly in my lists so it will have to be read to solve the memory puzzle.

Remnants

Ann Tatlock shows up fairly often on my TBR list and I’m looking forward to A Room of My Own. A historical novel looking at the Great Depression (1930’s) through the eyes of a child.

A Room of My Own

In A Pirate’s Debt has been offered up in these emails more than once and it’s also a read-and-enjoyed book. If I remember right this was a fun read but not without peril and excitement.

In a Pirate's debt

Sticks and Stones is also a repeat offering so if you don’t have it yet, now’s your chance.

Sticks and Stones

This is a nice selection of books today… enjoy.

My life with snow

Even though I’ve lived the largest part of my life in mild climates where snowfalls are rare, and cause for celebration, I still take snow for granted. It’s easy to forget – not everyone will be able to relate to what I’m saying sometimes. I was reminded of this, thinking back on my snow blower mention in the snow storm post   many may be scratching their heads wondering what in the world is this? Most of my mild climate friends have little-to-no experience with snow blowers either. There will be a future post showing pictures, for sure.

Snow, in itself, is an unknown quantity to many, as well, and maybe a glimpse would be nice. It will be fun to share some of our journey with those of you living in warmer climates, having to miss out on the cold weather experience.

Each winter I keep a bit of a photo diary for myself as a reminder of important and disputable things like – how early it snowed, how much it snowed, how long it stayed. This year I’ll share some of my diary with you all.

Some current pictures, to bring you up to speed.

This was a few weeks ago when the day lilies in the corner were still beautiful.

The first dusting of the coming winter storm just over a week ago. The leaves are falling but most are still on the trees.

20191010_143240

A few hours later, while there’s still enough light for a progress picture. It’s blurry because of the falling snow.

20191010_182528

Next morning after storming through the night. Morning brought still more storm with thunder and lightning this time.

20191011_092535

A week later, the weather has warmed up and the snow is disappearing. Not quick enough though. There is still much fall clean-up to do and the real snow could be here to stay in two weeks or so

20191015_094731You can see the remnants of a rabbit trail, about in the middle. They like to shelter under the deck. Rabbits are pretty common around here. They like to eat the tender plants we care about lol

I’m looking forward to sharing my snow life with you. The winters are hard, some years more than others, but I love living here, and I love to spread my enthusiasm for this place.

On the subject of books… there were none today that I cared about. Maybe tomorrow.

Soon! Winter. I have no doubt.

Free books October 14, 2019

Two FREE books caught my interest this morning.

The first one is courtesy of the BookRunes daily email.

Celtic Cross was in my downloads for 2015. If I remember right, I did like it and would have shared it if I was blogging back then. It should be a good read. Historical Fiction.

Celtic Cross

The second one is courtesy of the BookBub daily email.

Her Last First Kiss is new to me. Liz Isaacson does show up in my read list but not as often as some authors do. I can’t remember if I liked her style or not. Some write deeper than others and I prefer deeper, personally. I think Liz’s style may be in a lighter vein. We will have to read this and check it out to be sure.

Her Last First Kiss

I have been reading some of the novellas from yesterday and it’s served as a reminder as to why I prefer full length novels.

Summer of Dreams

Summer of Dreams is the first one to be checked out and I loved it. Every now and then a book comes along that lights-up-the-room and this book did that for me, in the beginning at least.

A successful novella will set an even pace from beginning to end. Difficult to do it seems. The common fault is time spent developing the story with a sprint to the end, before running out of pages. The sudden and hurried conclusion spoils whatever the book had going on for itself in the beginning.

That’s what happened here. The beginning of the book was awesome.

Novella format is great when the storyline doesn’t have much going for it and it would be a stretch to make it fit the Novel length. In my opinion, it’s a shame to waste a good idea on a Novella when a longer format could do it justice – leaving a satisfied reader.

The sneak peak at the sequel was disappointing too. It followed one of the other characters, ten years in the future. There was no resolving of the unfinished business in the first book.

Aside from the disappointing ending, it was well worth the read. The characters were great. I loved the way they think, and the resulting interactions between the three of them. Dry humor with audacious characters is the best.

Historical fiction.

One brilliant young woman with a military father disapproving of her engineering dreams.

A brilliant young man seeking an engineering education in the only avenue open to him, Officer Academy training.

The two are thrown together because the accumulation of his misconduct demerits has him facing expulsion and possible imprisonment. He must work to reduce that number to graduate in a few weeks. His reduction assignment is to build a working pump for a fountain in a ‘birdcage.’ That’s what her father called it when he requested military engineering help for his daughter.

Her colorful and resourceful cousin is part of the awesome threesome and between them, life is full of trouble.

Check out Summer of Dreams to see what you think.

Happy Reading!

Digging out

Today is a digging out day after yesterday’s massive winter storm, the Colorado low lambasting us with wind, rain, and heavy snow. There was a good amount of snow in the south eastern part of Manitoba where I live but further west it doubled and tripled. There are still highways closed and hydro customers without power but awesome progress has been made considering the conditions clean up crews faced. Records were set with this storm, both for the volume of snow and the damage it caused.

It always amazes me how much good comes out of something so disruptive. Resilient. Take care of each other – comments bandied about as officials give their status updates. People helping people wherever they see a need. A community stronger for having braved the elements together.

You know we Manitobans can’t be kept down when you hear that the football game scheduled for today is still on. It’s an unprotected field in Winnipeg but no matter what the weather – the game must go on. Except for lightning, they will postpone (often go to the field and wait it out) for lightning.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers (football) are playing the Montreal Alouettes this afternoon. The roads leading to the field are a mess but the field is perfect (after four passes to clear it.) The seats are all free of snow. The diehards will all be there,  including my son-in-law and his buddies. Currently The Bombers are leading but the Alouettes are holding their own at the end of the second quarter. We are looking for a Bomber win.

Leaves on the trees with snow on the ground. Incongruous.

20191012_145342

Books are not on my mind at this moment. The storm overshadows everything else this Canadian Thanksgiving weekend. Will we  even be able to gather for a family turkey dinner? Hopefully.

Storms cause all kinds of havoc but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. We are stronger for having faced it together. That’s a good thing.

Wishing you all a good weekend with Happy Reading!

P.S. the game is streaming on radio  CJOB Listen Live if you are interested in Canadian football.

A snow storm, and books read

Not much productive happening here today. The weather has been distracting.

It started last night around supper time and delivered a four hour power outage right off the bat. A Colorado-low weather system landed in southern Manitoba yesterday, determined to stay for the weekend.

This is how it started late afternoon yesterday. The fallen leaves will be covered soon.

Backyard 20191010_143240

A Winter wonderland in the front yard this morning.

Front yard 20191011_092725

We’ve had snow, freezing rain, bursts of gale force wind, more snow/rain, and then this morning – thunder and lightening.  I thought someone in the neighborhood was trying to start a stubborn snow blower until flashes of lightning caught my attention. Sure enough, it was thunder. Highly unusual in winter around here. Just plain snow is unusual this early in October. Life is never boring around here. We do have some awesome storms.

They didn’t have to tell me twice to stay home unless necessary.

The power outage meant Colleen Coble Collection had to be enjoyed by candlelight last night. A real hardship.

It turned out all four books were romantic mystery/thriller. Maybe the candlelight helped soften the tense mood a little.

The rest of these books were enjoyed awhile ago, I’m playing catch up. They were all very good.

It looks like I’d best hurry up and hit publish, the lights are flickering.

The thermos is filled with hot water for tea, the candles are in place, and the kindle is fully charged. I’m ready.

Happy reading. Stay warm.

Free Books from LPC books Oct 02, 2019

I’ve been anxiously checking and re-checking email all day and it’s finally here. The free books email from LPC (Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas) arrived this afternoon. I would be sad with only two new ones out of eight but with the massive free download yesterday… I’m good with it. The other six have been recently purchased, read, and mentioned. It’s nice to see them again, though, as they were no longer free for you at the time of my earlier mentions.

Angel Beneath My WheelsDevil in the Dust

Angel Beneath My Wheels has a racing car as part of the story. A Romance

Devil in The Dust is mentioned in the Amazon synopsis as a story of hope. Historical Fiction

chasing the ButterflyThe End of Calico Jack

The End of Calico Jack is YA Fiction

CassiaPcture Perfect

The covers say it all.

Lightning on a Quiet NightMurder Mezzo Forte

Both of these are Mystery.  I am a Donn Taylor fan and gladly recommend his books.

Checking through my downloads, it turns out I haven’t read Chasing the Butterfly yet so that means I have three unread books out of this email. I need a thumbs up emoji right about here.

I spent my reading time today with one of yesterday’s free books. A Bridge Unbroken Cathy Bryant. It was so good. If you missed it yesterday it is still free today, grab a copy.

A Bridge Unbroken

Happy Reading!

Leftover Girl

A little Fantasy is a nice change of pace.

Leftover Girl  Leftover Girl – C.C Bolick … Jes is used to being the new kid in class. Her family is on the move again – to yet another school. Maybe this time, moving to her adopted mother’s home town, she will get to complete the school year in one place and maybe even make a real friend.

She has no memory of life before her adoption, although small fragments are beginning of surface giving her clues to the truth of her abandonment.

Her life is built on lies causing Jes to push everyone away in order to keep her secret.  Meeting a strange new student who might know about her past and where she comes from has her drawing closer than ever before. He is in town looking for a certain girl and he thinks she could be the one.

Remembering is starting to happen more and more but knowing is going to come at a cost to her. Once those doors are opened there will be no going back, life will never be the same.

This story was tough to put down, and it was great. Now I need to read the sequel.

The Shell Collector’s Daughter

There are many TV shows that could possibly qualify as one of my favorites.

Touched by an Angel is one of them. A team of three angels is assigned to help a human in a difficult situation. They must appear undercover, assuming a persona and occupation that will allow them to become a regular part of life for their assignee. They’re allowed to be friendly, as long as they don’t reveal who they really are … unless their person has figured it out first. They can help things along a little by using their heavenly powers but it would have to be done discreetly.

The angel personalities are so different and that’s a big part of the appeal. The older lady is bossy, the younger is tender hearted and helpful. The sweet guy fills two roles; he is also the angel of death.  Most of the time, though, he just makes himself useful. When the three of them have trouble seeing eye to eye, as often happens, the carrying out of their assignment is a challenge — so much fun to watch.

Twice in a Lifetime is another of my favorite TV shows. There is just one angel this time. He’s been given advanced warning and he’s already in place waiting for the event. It is always a premature death of  someone who has managed to made a mess of their life. Sometimes the cause will be bad attitudes, bad choices, or both.  The angel (a cute young guy) will take the newly deceased person before a heavenly judge (an older man with a twinkle in his eye and a heavy hand on his judge’s gavel). To address confusion about why they are there he will show flashbacks of their life, highlighting their bad choices. If they exhibit understanding and remorse they will qualify to attempt a do-over. If they agree to his terms they will be sent back (accompanied by the cute angel) to an earlier  date in their life. They won’t go back as themselves but in some other role meant to cross paths with them. They have several  weeks to convince their younger self (without direct influence) to change their ways. If they are successful their life path will change, avoiding the dreaded death scene. Of course, this is never as easy as it sounds. So many things can go wrong, and usually do. The angel’s patience is severely tried at times, as he attempts to coach them toward a good ending.

The Shack by William P. Young is a book that reminds me of an extended and expanded episode of Touched by an Angel. The similarity is in the part heaven plays in changing lives and it always takes patience on the part of the angels.  They can’t cause, or convince anyone to do anything. They need to find loving ways to influence, but not force, people to make changes and good choices. Fortunately, for the struggling humans, angels do not give up easily.

The Shell Collector’s Daughter reminded me of these past enjoyments and I had to share them as an introduction to this heart warming story.

The Shell Collector's daughter

Surf’s Up Series – The Shell Collector’s Daughter – Beth Wiseman

Carianna has an unusual and close  relationship with God… has had all her life. Every Thursday she has afternoon tea with Him, and they talk. She listens to him every other day, too, but Thursdays are special. The rest of her routine for the week, Monday to Friday, has her catching the early ferry to Shell island. She stays until she has her day’s quota of beautiful gleanings for her father’s shop

Her kindness is legendary. She is loved by everyone in the village, and they take her safety personally. Her father is grateful because Carianna is very beautiful and has gained the unwanted notice of many men, young and otherwise. As protector, he has a  fierce reputation with the men of the village and beyond. So far, not one of the local men has ever gained his approval and they value their life too much to make any unsanctioned moves toward his daughter.

Carianna is oblivious to all of the drama.  She’s never shown any interest in a boyfriend, never mind a husband. This is going to have to change. Her father has been diagnosed with cancer and time is quickly running out for him. He’s worried. He’s trying to plan a safe future for her life without him.

Reporter Dominic is spending time on her beach researching an article for a travel magazine. There are a number of beaches in the country popular for shell collecting and this is one of them. He’s writing a fluff piece, really, but since he’s still grieving the death of his mother he appreciates the simple distraction of an easy subject. Other than work, he has nothing  on his mind, not even attractive women. The very last thing he wants to consider right now is love. That’s why it’s such a shock when he encounters a beautiful young woman; feeling an instant and strange bonding with her. She is unlike any one he has ever met. He can’t quite find a way to adequately describe the aura of puzzling innocence about her. The unsettled feeling each time he sees her has him attempting to escape.  It never works. Somehow he finds himself drawn back into her life instead.

This afternoon she’s insisting on taking him home to meet her father. Dominic is trembling in his boots. A fellow passenger on the ferry to the beach told him what would happen if her father ever saw him showing interest. Now he’s in shock; her father has just issued an  invitation for him to stay and share a meal with them … a confusing, and scary  development.

She’s not surprised at her father’s invitation. God has been whispering in her ear. He’s shared with her the description of a man … this man.

Beth Wiseman has done an awesome job, telling this beautiful and unusual story.

Now comes a varied selection of interesting, sometimes scary, sometimes compelling,  books. Hopefully you will find them enticing too.
