Free books, and a little snow, Nov 9, 2019

This has been a slow day for FREE books. I found two on Amazon. I’ve read both of them in the last four years but it looks like I will have to read them again, to jog my memory on what they are like.

come to me alive

A Romance: he has a successful music career, she lives in smalltown USA. Both have suffered through bad relationships. Taking a risk on another one is not an idea attractive to either of them.

miranda warning

I can’t remember reading this one but the first couple of pages are enticing so I’m looking forward to reading it again. It looks like it could have been written with a bit of lighthearted irreverence. I like a little dry humor in the middle of murder and mayhem.

One thing I like about snow on a cloudy night – the brilliance of the snow reflecting off the clouds lights up our world dispelling the deep black of night.

I am not a photographer, that’s for sure, but you will get the idea of what I’m talking about anyway.

This one was taken at midnight

This one was taken at 1:30 am

I could have taken another one at 4am when I looked out to see how pretty it was but I decided I’d best just put my book away and get some sleep.

Free and bargain books November 8, 2019

This mornings BookBub suggestion is a bargain book at $0.99 Christmas Roses. I first met author, Amanda Cabot, in one of my favorite book collection series using five contributors. I really enjoy her writing.

The story line is similar to other books just like it but the style and expression of thought makes it unique. I love it when the first few pages have me hooked.

Christmas Roses

I’m tempted to dive right in but first, The Chain You Forge is crying out to be finished. It is still a bargain at $1.30.

It’s a modern retelling of A Christmas Carol and it works for me. Sometimes retellings don’t seem to work all that well but this one does. It has enough similarities but adds a few new twists and turns to make it feel fresh and real. I’m pleasantly surprised to like it.

The Chain You Forge

Like Scrooge in A Christmas Carol, Benita is miserly and mean; in her business dealings and in the way she does life. Her late father was miserly and mean too and his ghost has visited to demand she change her ways. She will end up in chains like him unless she does. He decrees that the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future will visit her over the next three nights. To show her the truth of her life and what it will look like unless she makes drastic changes. She needs to become a better person.

Scrooge had a happy ending, maybe Benita will too.

BookRunes just came though with a FREE suggestion. Stepping Into The Light. Historical Fiction set in the Scottish Highlands. I’ve read and enjoyed Candee Fick before and expect this one will be a good read too. The first few paragraphs look promising.

Stepping Into The Light

An heir is needed to protect the future of the chiefdom but the prospective young ladies all meet with tragedy. Before they even have the chance to become the needed bride.

Recently, there was a similar sounding book but this doesn’t appear to be it. I enjoyed that one and this one does seem to have some differences, at first glance anyway. I’ll give it a try to see how it stacks up against the other one.

Happy Reading!

Free books November 7, 2019

A FREE book today via BookBub, The River Girl’s Song.

A historical novel about a young girl left alone to care for her baby brother and her father’s farm, depending on friends to help her survive. We have seen this one before but it’s worth mentioning again.

The River Girl's Song

Another one FREE, found while searching Amazon. Shattered Rose.  I downloaded this one four years ago but don’t remember reading it. I’ll read it again along with you.

shattered Rose

A young woman with self esteem issues is crushed when the perfect man for her walks away. She meets someone else and her heart is slowly beginning to mend when  she discovers …

We will have to read the book to find out what she discovers.

One more book FREE. Stumbled over while viewing the last one.  A change of pace, Melody’s Christmas. An author new to me and the story looks interesting.

Melody's Christmas

A young woman home to help her mother with their business while grieving the loss of her father.

A neighbor, a single dad with a young son who decides Melody should be his new mom. A little awkward for dad.

Books read and enjoyed

Today didn’t bring any free books but there are books-read needing to be talked about.

First, though, I must say it was a good day, full of activities other than reading – for a change.  The sky was mostly sunny and the roads were clear and dry. Good friends were in town to visit family and invited me to meet them at The Pancake House restaurant in the city for breakfast. The hour long drive was easy and enjoyable, but definitely cooler than it’s been the last few days. The temperature was -10c feeling like -14c with the wind chill.

Tonight I was thinking about the exquisite pain of cold weather. I was thinking about warm parts of the world where cold is unheard of. How do you explain the foreign concept of cold so it can be imagined accurately?

Hot and cold are so different. Hot starts out as warm (soft and gentle, cozy) and builds up to burning, stifling. It saps strength, leaving weakness and worse. I’ll admit, I’ve not spent much time in extreme heat so my explanation will be lacking I’m sure.

Cold starts out as cool (refreshing and energizing, shivery) and it builds up to cutting, stabbing, burning (but a different kind of burning.) When there is wind with the freezing cold, it feels like it goes right through you. It’s bearable only if you are dressed warm enough for the conditions.

I’ve decided it’s definitely a challenge to try to describe cold to someone who knows only heat. I have no idea how to say it well. The question does give the mind a mystery to ponder though. On the other hand, maybe it’s better felt than telt, as an old friend used to say.

Read (red) Books. (They really do need to find a way to spell read and read differently.)

When Snowflakes Never Cease

I loved this set of books When Snowflakes Never Cease. The five authors did an amazing job. The stories have depth and are connected in clever ways that work.

Meant for Me

This one Meant For Me was a disappointment. I think overall it was a great story but it had too much detail that – to my way of thinking – was unnecessary. I skimmed many pages. Also, the playing out of the story line was somewhat unbelievable and frustrating.  Alongside the dissatisfaction, though, was the thought that others may read the book  and disagree with my opinion. I still love this classy cover.

The Collins Case

I enjoyed The Collins Case. It was a thriller all right but it didn’t trigger me the way some books do. The mystery was engaging and, happily, it didn’t mess with my emotions.

A friend and her children are mysteriously missing. The case is not Ann’s, that would be a conflict of interest, but she is working on it just the same. Her involvement could get her killed before they are found. It almost does, more than once.

Blue Christmas

I liked this one too. Blue Christmas. it was worth the reread. An unexpected invitation to a Christmas Eve service, with dinner following, turns into something that blows the mind of this lonely college student. It wasn’t until they pulled up to the massive front door that Hannah realizes she has no idea who her friend really is. She would never, in her wildest imagination, have connected her older friend with members of a popular teen rock band. This will certainly be a Christmas to remember.

Free books November 5, 2019

It’s chilly here today, -10c feels like -18c with the wind. A perfect time to cozy up with a cup of tea and a good book. Especially a chilly Christmas book. The Chain You Forge, is inspired by Mr. Scrooge in Charles Dickens’ classic story A Christmas Carol.

This is our bargain for today at $1.31 and suggested by BookBub. Retelling of classic tales is popular these days. Some are better than others, it will be interesting to see what form  this one takes.

The Chain You Forge

I did find a couple of attractive looking FREE books on Amazon this morning.

Murder in Half Moon Bay is a cozy mystery that has been showing up regularly on the  FREE list for a number of years. It looks like fun. And now that I upload the cover it  appears it’s been mentioned here before. I guess it can’t hurt to show it again.

Murder on Half Moon Bay

This FREE one is new to me. Bear Creek. It’s a historical novel set in the old west (USA) back in the days of pioneers, outlaws, gunfights, and gun toting- fast shooting lawmen. I’m not sure what to expect from this author but I’m hoping for good things.

Bear Creek

When Snowflakes Never Cease

I’m up to book 3 of 5 and thoroughly enjoying it. If you haven’t downloaded it yet for the bargain price, there’s still time.

Free books November 4, 2019

BookBub’s suggestion this morning has been free before and is FREE again. A historical novel about life for USA pioneers travelling across the country by wagon train. Wagon Train Baby

Wagon Train Baby

The trip is difficult for anyone but it’s even harder for a young woman travelling alone. The wagon master’s rules say a woman isn’t allowed to travel with his group unless under the protection of a man. Her father planned to make the trip when they booked passage but changed his mind and backed out at the last minute.

She’s desperate to move back home and make a new life for herself. A young man travelling alone sees her distress and offers his protection. At least long enough to make the trip. He’s stepping up to help her out of a guilty conscience. His fiancé was killed in an attack and he’s convinced it was his fault. If he had been there …

She has a another dilemma. She is expecting a baby. A secret she must keep to herself or they will leave her behind no matter how much protection she has.

BookRunes FREE suggestion this morning is Uncommon Ground

I have downloaded several books from this author, Joy Ohagwu, but it’s been awhile and I can’t remember  enough about them to make a recommendation one way or the other. I’m looking forward to a reminder.

Uncommon Ground

Stella is widowed and struggling with a difficult relationship with her teenage daughter when disaster strikes, changing everything.

Searching for her daughter she meets Michael, a man with a mysterious past. Danger seems to follow him everywhere and life takes on unexpected twists and turns with him around.

Free and bargain books November 3, 2019

Things are a little slow again today, for free books, but I’ve found a couple of them.

In Between is a young adult story with a bit of a twist.

In Between

Katie Parker has been sent to live with her eccentric grandmother. Her mother is in prison and her father is no longer in the picture. She’s trying to decide if she should stay in this strange environment or run away. Staying has her learning family secrets, more of them than she ever imagined possible. Will it change things for her?

A Rose Blooms Twice … a pioneer story of a young woman, who, despite a sorrowful life, strikes out, travelling to a new land looking for a new life.

A Rose Blooms Twice

And last, but not least, a bargain. $1.30

A collection by some of my favorite authors. It’s a happy day when a new installment is published and I look forward to diving in.

When Snowflakes Never Cease a Crossroads Collection.

Five all new inter-connected stories where a blizzard blows through changing lives forever.

When Snowflakes Never Cease

The first two books, at the top of the list, I’ve read a number of years ago but the collection is new and I’m excited.

Happy Reading on a restful Sunday.

Free, and not so free November 2, 2019

I have a few books for you today. Just like yesterday, there are several free and three not so free. I like the authors and wanted them. And I have to share. That’s why we have the not-so-free again today.

The first one is a BookBub suggestion and it’s $0.99 Threads of Suspicion a Dee Henderson book (she appeared on yesterday’s list.)

Threads of Suspicion

The next one came up for me on Amazon for $1.29 Heart of Stone by Lyn Cote. (we had one of her books yesterday, as well.)

Heart of Stone

Amazon again for all of the rest.

One Thursday Morning is $1.35 by T.K.Chapin. I don’t know him as well as the other two authors but have read a few of his books. I wanted to take a chance on this one too.

One Thursday Morning

The next two are FREE. They are among  my previously read books from 2014 and 2016 but I don’t remember a lot about them. I suspect I liked them though, if my vague recollections are what I think they are.

A Mystery, Gone The Next  Ben Rehder

Gone The Next

A Fantasy, Dreamlander K.M Weiland

Dreamlander

I hope you find some of these enticing.

Free, and not quite free November 1, 2019

I know, I mostly download free books (to feed my voracious reading habit) but I do budget in some not-so-free books every now and then. And, if it really seems important to my life – I’ll occasionally be willing to go full price.

This morning the BookBub daily email offers a $0.99 book that intrigues me, Secrets and Lies. I decided to check out the synopsis on Amazon. It sounds interesting. It turns out,  it’s on my already purchased list for 2017.

Long story short – investigation tells me it was on my Kindle but it’s not been mentioned on this blog as read. Why not? By the looks of it, on re-download, it seems I quit at 17% read. The mystery is … Why? Couldn’t get into it? Didn’t like it? Maybe a bit of both?

I can’t resist a mystery so… I’ve downloaded all three of Janet Sketchley’s books from my Amazon account, two previously owned and a new one today. I want to figure out why I finished reading one but not the other, and then try out the new one. After all this, I hope second time around will turn out to be a better experience.

Secrets and Lies is book 2 in A Redemption’s Edge Series. This is the one I didn’t finish reading for some reason.

Secrets and Lies TBR

Heaven’s Prey is book 1 in A Redemption’s Edge Series. I read it back in 2014 but wasn’t blogging then. This many years past I’m not sure how I felt about it and I’m curious.

Heaven's Prey

When I was researching Janet Sketchley on Amazon, trying to figure things out, I found the first book of another one of her series and it’s on at the bargain price of $1.32. I decided to give this one a try, hoping I like it.

Unknown Enemy, book 1 in A Green Dory Inn Mystery Series

Unknown Enemy

Finally, FREE

I didn’t want to end this post without leaving you with something FREE. I was looking for light-and-upbeat to change the tone of the post. Meant for Me doesn’t look like it will fit that category but I really like this author, Lyn Cote. It’s a new book for me too and I just couldn’t pass it up. I guess light will have to wait for another day.

Meant for Me

I love this cover.

A historical novel of women left behind to deal with life while their men have gone to war. This subject seems to be very popular these days.

It’s Friday and it’s snowing, light powdery stuff (which is better than wet and heavy) and it’s coming down in earnest at the moment but doesn’t amount to much, yet. Hopefully it will be over by tonight as promised by the weatherman. Tomorrow is Writer’s Group meeting in the city, an hour away. Clear roads would be nice. I’ll let you know how it goes. We meet in a historic house which is kind of cool. It was built in 1874 by the local sheriff. I’m hoping this link will work so you can see some pictures. It isn’t fancy but it’s still cool. We enjoy the feel of the place.

In the meantime Happy Reading
