Today is a read and enjoyed day

Today is a lite day for interesting books. It’s a great time to catch up on  read-and-enjoyed stories. The list is probably heavier with Romance than Mystery but there will be a variety, I hope.

A Model Bride is the latest book read and it suited my mood of the day. It is set in England with a side trip to Edinburgh, Scotland. The real story, though, is about the insecurities the characters have to work their way through. It was the perfect balance between lite and heavy, for me anyway.

A Marriage of Convenience this is the fun story of a much appreciated care-giver and a beloved absentee grandson, jointly inheriting a successful ranching enterprise. To keep the inheritance they have to agree to be married in six months time. She is actively involved in running the ranch and is good at it. He’s from New York and a city boy through and through. And… they’ve never met. She needs her share to provide for her son. He doesn’t need it but decides he wants it.

Garden of Dreams I can’t describe this story as well as Amazon, so here is their quote:

Raised by a mother who was haunted by worry and fear, Jill vowed to live a different kind of life. As a young woman, she planned out what she wanted—a husband, a large home full of children, the opportunity to paint and grow a beautiful garden, a community of believers, and a best friend—then watched as it all came true in the art-filled town of Ashland, Oregon.

But Jill has a secret that she has kept from those she loves most, including her husband and her best friend, Caye…

This is one of my favorite book on this list.

Garden of Dreams

Cold Terror This is another of my favorites on this list. A forensic artist, she’s vacationing on a secluded island where the local sheriff (who hears the local gossip and knows she can) asks her to do a facial reconstruction on a young murder victim they haven’t been able to identify. In the midst of this task a ferocious someone enters her cottage, and with threats, attempts to kill her. She manages to escape and get help but no one knows who the intruder is or why he keeps trying to kill her.

The Turn of a Wheel a blending of romance, intrigue, and danger. A very good story

There are a number of partially read collections still in the queue but we’ll wait a bit to mention them.

Currently I’m reading In The Field of Grace, the story of Naomi and Ruth. A daughter-in- law honoring her husband’s mother even though they are both widowed and are from different cultures and countries. When Naomi decides to return to the land of her birth Ruth vows to follow her and look after her. There have been many retellings of this popular Bible story but this one stands out with it’s different perspective. I’m really liking it so far (I’m still near the beginning) and expect to keep liking it.

I hope you are feeling inspired and ready for the next batch of free and bargain books. Tomorrow could be a good day.

Another bargain book for Jan 5, 2020

Author Chautona Havig recommended a bargain book on her Facebook page tonight, The Number of Love. I’d wait ’till tomorrow to mention this but it could easily be time sensitive, so… here it is  at $0.99. This is not a familiar author to me but I trust Chautona’s judgement. I’m excited to read this, maybe it will be next.

The Number of Love

Amazon quote:

Three years into the Great War, England’s greatest asset is their intelligence network–field agents risking their lives to gather information, and codebreakers able to crack every German telegram. Margot De Wilde thrives in the environment of the secretive Room 40, where she spends her days deciphering intercepted messages. But when her world is turned upside down by an unexpected loss, for the first time in her life numbers aren’t enough.

Drake Elton returns wounded from the field, followed by an enemy who just won’t give up. He’s smitten quickly by the intelligent Margot, but how can he convince a girl who lives entirely in her mind that sometimes life’s answers lie in the heart?

Amid biological warfare, encrypted letters, and a German spy who wants to destroy not just them but others they love, Margot and Drake will have to work together to save themselves from the very secrets that brought them together.

I’m currently reading Cold Terror, a book from today’s first post. It’s a excellent read and I’m two-thirds of the way through it already. It’s still a bargain at $1.31 if you want to grab a copy.

Cold Terror

Partial Amazon quote:

Forensic artist Hannah Perry’s skills make her a valuable asset to the police in solving criminal investigations.
Now she’s taking a much-needed vacation on a secluded island with her young son. But a young woman has been murdered. Her body unidentified. Her skull recently discovered by the police, and Hannah feels compelled to help find the killer. She decides to work on the reconstruction in the evenings while her son sleeps. But as the woman’s face takes shape, an assailant invades Hannah’s cabin and tries to end her life. Before he can permanently silence her, she and her son flee the island in a small boat. Trouble is, as they approach Cold Harbor, ocean waves capsize the boat, enveloping them both in cold terror.

She’s been rescued from drowning by a former Seal. He has the resources to protect her but her life is still in danger. Her unknown attacker has exceptional military skills and keeps showing up, determined to kill her. A frustration to her security team.

It’s been a good day for books,

Free and bargain books January 5, 2020

BookRunes has a FREE book for us this morning, The Boden Birthright, this is a novella to precede the first book in the Cimarron legacy series. Book 1, No Way Up, appeared for us as free back in August. I remember reading and enjoying it.

The Boden Birthright

Amazon quote as a refresher:

After the death of his wife, prosperous businessman Chance Boden heads west along the Santa Fe Trail with his son to escape the powerful control of his in-laws. He has plans to establish his own ranch, but instead he finds work with Frank Chastain, owner of a vast amount of land.

Chance doesn’t want to work for anyone, but Frank’s beautiful daughter, Veronica, gives him reason to delay buying his own holdings. With winter coming, no home in which to live, and Veronica’s offer to care for young Cole while Chance learns the ways of ranching in the desert, Chance has little choice but to accept the Chastains’ offer to stay on.

Along with the free book, I came across another of Mary Connealy’s books. It’s on sale, a bargain at $1.99, The Accidental Guardian. This looks interesting too.

The Accidental Guardian

Amazon quote:

When Trace Riley finds the smoldering ruins of a small wagon train, he recognizes the hand behind the attack as the same group who left him as sole survivor years ago. Living off the wilderness since then, he’d finally carved out a home and started a herd–while serving as a self-appointed guardian of the trail, driving off dangerous men. He’d
hoped those days were over, but the latest attack shows he was wrong.

Deborah Harkness saved her younger sister and two toddlers during the attack, and now finds herself at the mercy of her rescuer. Trace offers the only shelter for miles around, and agrees to take them in until she can safely continue. His simple bachelor existence never anticipated kids and women in the picture and their arrival is unsettling–yet enticing.

Of course, I couldn’t resist one more bargain. This is an author unfamiliar to me but checking her book out a little, it seems like it could be a good one. Cold Terror: (Cold Harbor book 1) a bargain at $1.31. I want to read it and see what this author is all about.

Cold Terror

Amazon Quote:

But it also makes her the next target.
Former SEAL Gage Blackwell can’t believe his eyes as he plunges into the raging waters to rescue the pair. Owner of Blackwell Tactical-a law enforcement training facility and protection services agency-Gage pulls the woman he once loved from the angry ocean. When he learns of her attack, he vows to protect her while hunting down the killer. Alone and vulnerable, Hannah has to accept Gage’s protection-even if it means staying close to the man who’d once walked out on her without a backward glance.

Happy Reading on this cool (at my house, anyway) Sunday.

Our day started with howling wind but it seems to have settled down now. Although, it looks like things could change. It might be a good plan to check the forecast to be forewarned, just in case.

This winter has actually been better than we could have hoped, after the huge storm in the fall with predictions for more to come. The storms did materialize but didn’t manage to make it far enough north to affect us. Our neighbors to the south, however, were buried in snow. We feel bad for them. On some levels it’s not fun. Snowmobilers, on the other hand, love it. The joys of winter.

Bargain books December 31, 2019?

I couldn’t help but continue the search for good books this morning and two more grabbed my attention. They are bargain books and I started a new post for tomorrow (Dec 31st,) but rethought the idea and decided to not wait, in case the price changes overnight. That would be so disappointing. I’m going to cheat and leave tomorrow’s date though. (big smile)

A bargain book ($1.99) on Amazon, Garden of Dreams. Leslie Gould has appeared once before on my download list. Reading the first few pages now, I’m looking forward to checking this out.

Garden of Dreams

Amazon quote:

Raised by a mother who was haunted by worry and fear, Jill vowed to live a different kind of life. As a young woman, she planned out what she wanted—a husband, a large home full of children, the opportunity to paint and grow a beautiful garden, a community of believers, and a best friend—then watched as it all came true in the art-filled town of Ashland, Oregon.

But Jill has a secret that she has kept from those she loves most, including her husband and her best friend, Caye—and she’s not the only one with something to hide. Her mother also has not told Jill the whole truth about her father and the disease that claimed his life. Together, these secrets shatter Jill’s idyllic world.

Another cool looking bargain book, Alias Raven Black ($1.31) I’ve not read this author before so don’t know what to expect but the first page has me wanting to read and find out what this is about too.

Alias Raven Black

Amazon quote:

Brenna has lived most of her life just left of the right side of the law. While on vacation at a secluded ski resort, her past finally catches up with her. Her father, who she hasn’t seen since she ran away at sixteen, suddenly wants to reconcile.
Before she can make sense of that overture, the FBI whisk her off to Minneapolis. In exchange for a clean slate, she is recruited to work as a mole in the home of known mobster and suspected drug lord, Anthony Giordano. Under the alias, Raven Black, she becomes nanny to Giordano’s children.
Brenna’s hands are full just learning to mother two spoiled kids, while her main objective, finding information that would put their father away for life, remains elusively out of reach.
Will the secrets she discovers bring absolution from the past she’s tried so hard to leave behind or simply tear her heart in two?

If anything shows up via email tomorrow, I will post again.

Free/bargain books recently read… December 16, 2019

There are no new free books so far today but… there are some old free books.

The one I just started reading is still FREE.  Whisper- the Pete Zendel Suspense Series. I’m liking it.

The first two chapters are pretty intense with burning buildings, armed and dangerous intruders, vehicles forced off the road. Accidentally witnessed drug deals in ancient ruins, resulting in crooks shooting and blowing up buildings to eliminate the threat to their freedom. Fortunately, the drug dealers and their thugs missed.

I’m thinking the two situations are probably linked. Check it out.

There would have been a better search for Free books if I had been home today. I needed/wanted to attend a funeral for a dear extended family member. It was in the city, an hour from me, and I had a couple of hours waiting time in the middle of everything. Perfect for some reading time.

I finished the book started yesterday. Longing for the Tormented Sheriff, Cassidy Hanton. Still a bargain at $1.31.

It was an okay story. Unique and well enough written. It moved too slowly for me – with a great number of books still waiting to be read. I admit to skipping ahead to the last three chapters, I wanted to see how it all turned, I did like the ending.

Looking for the cover to share here – it appears this download has not been mention in a post yet. I remember now, being uncertain about it and wanting to wait a bit. It turned out better than expected so that’s a plus.

Waiting time wasn’t over for me yet this afternoon so I started (and then finished at supper)  Bespoke: a Tiny Christmas Tale. It is a Victorian story with a bit of a fantasy twist to it. It was different but definitely a good read. It’s still FREE

Bespoke is a British word I wouldn’t have known except that it turned up in another book I read recently. I had to look it up to figure it out. My head still can’t make the connection between the meaning and the word but we’ll go with it. It is a term used for something ordered that is specific to you, such as business cards with your logo, or even a commissioned suit of clothes. In this case it was something forged in a unique, and unheard of, shape.

Bespoke

I’m looking forward to tomorrow, maybe it will have something new for us.

Happy Reading.

Free books December 14, 2019

BookRunes has one FREE book for us today. Courage Dares Sisters of Spirit book 4

I’ve read the first three chapters and I’m hooked. It is definitely gripping suspense.

Here is Amazon’s comment.

OVERVIEW;
A tragic past; a dangerous present.
A cliffhanger on real cliffs.
The fighter pilot and the peace-loving mapmaker.

Courage Dares

I haven’t read this author – I’m hoping the story don’t disappoint but turns out to be as good as I think it is.

I’m currently reading, and loving, Peg Leg’s Princess. It’s still FREE if you need it.

There is more to this book than the cover suggests. A feisty little woman running from a mean step-father. A wounded soldier who thinks no woman would ever want him. She’s loved him since he saved her life ten years ago and she has no intention of letting him hold onto his misguided ideas. She has time. There is a guest ranch to keep them busy while he figures it out.

Peg Leg's Princess

Happy Reading on this chilly weekend.

I heard a comment on the radio the other day. Talking about some people surviving winter better than others. The opinion was that some don’t do winter better, they just dress warmer. That’s me today. It’s currently -24c outside, feels like -31c with the wind chill. I’m feeling the cool more than usual in the house today for some reason. Four warm layers plus a heavy fleece winter bath robe. Toasty.

Read and Enjoyed up to December 5, 2019

Books recently read and enjoyed.

The Highlanders: A Smitten Historical Romance Collection a variety of authors. I was drawn in tighter to some more than others but overall I thoroughly enjoyed the whole collection.

Never underestimate the heart of a Highlander. Four great books.

Night Fox, A Tender Siege, The Year without Summer, and The Violinist

The Highlanders

Sand Creek Serenade Jennifer Uhlarik

This is a book I couldn’t put down. So well written and engaging. One of my favorite reads this week.

One woman with a deep desire to serve and help. One brave who will stop at nothing to save his people. Each willing to die for their beliefs and love for one another. Will their sacrifice be enough?

As a female medical doctor in 1864, Sadie Hoppner is no stranger to tragedy and loss. Cheyenne brave Five Kills wants peace between his people and the American Army. *Amazon quote.

Sand Creek Serenade

The Soldiers of Purple Heart Ranch  Three books written by one author Shanae Johnson

This was such a good read too. It didn’t take me long to get through all three books. And, it’s still on at a bargain price $0.99, a good deal.

THE CORPORAL AND THE CHOIR GIRL, THE PRIVATE AND THE PASTOR’S DAUGHTER, THE SOLDIER AND THE SOCIALITEThe soldiers of the purple heart ranch

Another favorite read, so well done.

Orphaned Hearts (Heart of Africa Series) Marion Ueckermann

When his wife dies in childbirth, Zambian conservationist Simon Hartley pours his life into raising his daughter and his orphan elephants. He has no time, or desire, to fall in love again. Or so he thinks.

Wanting to escape English society and postpone an arranged marriage, Lady Abigail Chadwick heads to Africa for a year to teach the children of the Good Shepherd Orphanage. Upon her arrival she is left stranded at Livingstone airport…until a reluctant Simon comes to her rescue.

Bargain book December 2, 2019

A Facebook post by Gospel eBooks, for their Daily E-Books Deals, gives us a bargain book  ($1.32CDN) today. Beautiful Storm, book four in the Unfailing Love series. I’ve not read  Mandi Blake before so can’t say whether this will be good or not, but as usual I hope it will be.

Beautiful Storm

Below is part of the Amazon synopsis. It sounds like it could be interesting.

Tori’s life was perfect—a successful job, a doctor for a husband, and a pristine loft in Chicago—until her husband left her for someone else. With her divorce comes a surprise cabin in the Deep South, and she wants nothing more than to get rid of it so she can get her life back in order.

Marcus is the self-appointed guardian of his sister and three brothers, while their mother lives a toxic lifestyle, but one call to his auto repair shop from an entitled city girl turns his world upside down. He’s a master of reading people, but the feisty newcomer poses an interesting challenge.

As a change of pace: A Cozy Mystery mentioned a number of weeks back is a fun read. Foreclosed: A Mitzy Neuhaus Mystery. It’s FREE.

Amazon describes this book as reminiscent of the Legally Blond movies.  She is well-intentioned, beautiful, slightly clueless, and really, really good at what she does – which is selling homes in Portland, Oregon.

This book showed up for me 6 years ago. I’m tempted to read it again.

Foreclosed

Currently, I’m reading Forget Me Now an Alana Terry thriller. It’s frustrating me. The timeline keeps moving back and forth, but the confusing action (or maybe it’s the description of the action) is causing the most frustration. I’m just not getting it. I’m going to move on, maybe try again later on just to make sure it really doesn’t work for me.

Forget me now

I think Sand Creek Serenade will be next up. Unfortunately it has gone back to full price, although, it is free if you subscribe to Kindle Unlimited. I’ve read the first chapter and so far I’m hooked.

Sand Creek Serenade

A female doctor in a male dominated, old time, Army Fort has to be strong. Sadie Hoppner can definitely hold her own with the soldiers, if given half a chance. She’s a good doctor and appreciates the chance to work alongside her brother.

She’s also curious, wanting to meet the women living and working in the recently appearing nomadic camp. Before an opportunity can present itself a dog steals her shoe and runs with it. Headed back to their camp to tease his owner. He plays keep-away with the shoe enticing Five Kills to follow him back to the fort where he will drop the shoe beside Sadie. The dog seems to be a bit of a match maker.

We’re off to a good start.

Happy Reading

Bargain books November 26, 2019

BookBub started it all this morning with several bargain books.

The first bargain ($0.99) is from a new favorite author Alana Terry. Forget Me Now is the gripping suspense story of a young woman who’s lost a portion her memory through brain injury trauma. She’s has no idea what’s happened to her and no ability to retain new memories when she does figure things out. Everyone close to her is dead and it’s clear she’s next.  There are some tense moments in store for her and for us.

Forget me now

The second bargain book ($1.99)  is a change of pace. In The Field of Grace is a retelling of the story of Ruth and Boaz. This tale is popular with authors and there have been many versions written through the years. This one seems to be from a different point of view, which is new. It’s usually told from Ruth’s perspective with Boaz taking a minor role. This time, the story starts out from his point of view, immediately catching my interest.

I don’t know this author but I’m looking forward to the experience.

In the Field of Grace

And finally, an Amazon suggested bargain book ($1.99) is a beloved collection from iconic Canadian author Janette Oke. We’ve been reading and watching movies of her pioneer stories for decades. This Canadian West Collection contains six of her most popular books.

Canadian West Collection

1 When Calls the Heart
2 When Comes the Spring
3 When Breaks the Dawn
4 When Hope Springs New
5 Beyond the Gathering Storm
6 When Tomorrow Comes

My video stash still has the movie box collection for three of these popular books. It’s nice to bring them out again every now and then.

Happy Reading.

Today is Grey Cup parade through the city of Winnipeg.  People are out in droves to honour the win of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers football team and the energy level is high. I’m loving the internet live stream for those of us not able to be there in person. I think I will wait awhile to read. It’s been twenty nine years since their last championship win so this could be the parade of a lifetime, definitely not is to be missed.

CJOB live is the place to find it if you follow Canadian football.

A nice bunch of Free books November 20, 2019

We have a nice bunch of FREE books today from Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas (LPC Books). I’m always excited when I see their email because they often have newly published book in the list. There are six books this time and all but two are new to me. This makes my Day! Hurry is a must as these are only free until November 22nd.

The Trouble in Willow Falls The Trouble in Willow Falls is book 2 in the  series about the struggles of small town life trying to re-invent itself.

God Bless the Child  God Bless the Child must be book 2 or 3 or so in the Main Street Clinic Series, unless there is another similar series and I’m mixing them up. In any event, it’s a touching story about a family therapist with a big heart for hurting and troubled children.

Mourning Dove Mourning Dove  a historical novel set in the 1970’s deep south, Memphis Tennessee. It’s the story of two siblings with a complicated life. In this case both the book and the author are new to me. An new adventure.

A Perfect Weakness  A Perfect Weakness has been on the FREE list before and I have read it. It’s about a doctor who, for guilt reasons, decided to stop practicing, and he’s arriving in a pioneer town where they are in desperate need of him. In fact they expected he would be replacing their aging doctor. They do their best to limp along without his help, until disaster strikes.  Sometimes life gives us a chance to make new decisions — if only we will.

Life in Chapel Srings  Life in Chapel Springs is book 4 in the series   The ups and downs of small town life while trying  to keep a low profile in a high profile world. It appears I’ve already downloaded books 1 and 3 in this series but I’m not sure I’ve read them. A mystery in need of solving.

Tested by Fire  Tested by Fire is book 1 in the Medic-7  Series and has been FREE before. I do remember reading this one, it was worth it, for sure.

Happy Reading!
