Free books for November 15, 2019

No interesting suggestions from the usual sources this morning but a search of Amazon  FREE books did present a couple of interesting choices.

The first two FREE books are from authors I’ve not read but the books looked interesting so I went for it. Cabin By The Lake and Works of Darkness look like they will be romantic/thrillers. At least the first one seems to fit the romantic genre, I’m not so sure about the second one yet.

Cabin by The Lake

Works of Darkness

The third FREE book is a light change of pace. It’s a book from my  2013 past and I remember liking it. I think you will find it a fun read too. Gentleman of Her Dreams

Happy Friday Reading

One Free book November 10, 2019

Just one FREE today. Courtesy BookRunes daily suggestions.

Both the author and the book are new to me

Never Been Born

_______________________________________

It’s Remembrance Day in Canada and Veterans Day in the USA, tomorrow, November 11th. A day to remember all of the soldiers who served to protect us through the decades. Our soldiers fought to protect other countries as well as our own in time of war. Most of those countries lived through desperate times and with full hearts they remember with us. We appreciate the expressions of love through the years for what our soldiers protection has meant in these far away places, especially during WWII.  My heart is filled with gratitude when I think of our guys over there, willing and able to help save lives in terrible times.

I cannot begin to imagine the sacrifices made and the way life is forever changed by the things our soldiers endure, both physically and emotionally, in times of combat. I pray we will remember to be grateful, always.

We celebrate Remembrance Day Lest We Forget

Books read and enjoyed

Today didn’t bring any free books but there are books-read needing to be talked about.

First, though, I must say it was a good day, full of activities other than reading – for a change.  The sky was mostly sunny and the roads were clear and dry. Good friends were in town to visit family and invited me to meet them at The Pancake House restaurant in the city for breakfast. The hour long drive was easy and enjoyable, but definitely cooler than it’s been the last few days. The temperature was -10c feeling like -14c with the wind chill.

Tonight I was thinking about the exquisite pain of cold weather. I was thinking about warm parts of the world where cold is unheard of. How do you explain the foreign concept of cold so it can be imagined accurately?

Hot and cold are so different. Hot starts out as warm (soft and gentle, cozy) and builds up to burning, stifling. It saps strength, leaving weakness and worse. I’ll admit, I’ve not spent much time in extreme heat so my explanation will be lacking I’m sure.

Cold starts out as cool (refreshing and energizing, shivery) and it builds up to cutting, stabbing, burning (but a different kind of burning.) When there is wind with the freezing cold, it feels like it goes right through you. It’s bearable only if you are dressed warm enough for the conditions.

I’ve decided it’s definitely a challenge to try to describe cold to someone who knows only heat. I have no idea how to say it well. The question does give the mind a mystery to ponder though. On the other hand, maybe it’s better felt than telt, as an old friend used to say.

Read (red) Books. (They really do need to find a way to spell read and read differently.)

When Snowflakes Never Cease

I loved this set of books When Snowflakes Never Cease. The five authors did an amazing job. The stories have depth and are connected in clever ways that work.

Meant for Me

This one Meant For Me was a disappointment. I think overall it was a great story but it had too much detail that – to my way of thinking – was unnecessary. I skimmed many pages. Also, the playing out of the story line was somewhat unbelievable and frustrating.  Alongside the dissatisfaction, though, was the thought that others may read the book  and disagree with my opinion. I still love this classy cover.

The Collins Case

I enjoyed The Collins Case. It was a thriller all right but it didn’t trigger me the way some books do. The mystery was engaging and, happily, it didn’t mess with my emotions.

A friend and her children are mysteriously missing. The case is not Ann’s, that would be a conflict of interest, but she is working on it just the same. Her involvement could get her killed before they are found. It almost does, more than once.

Blue Christmas

I liked this one too. Blue Christmas. it was worth the reread. An unexpected invitation to a Christmas Eve service, with dinner following, turns into something that blows the mind of this lonely college student. It wasn’t until they pulled up to the massive front door that Hannah realizes she has no idea who her friend really is. She would never, in her wildest imagination, have connected her older friend with members of a popular teen rock band. This will certainly be a Christmas to remember.

Happy Reading!

Free, and not so free November 2, 2019

I have a few books for you today. Just like yesterday, there are several free and three not so free. I like the authors and wanted them. And I have to share. That’s why we have the not-so-free again today.

The first one is a BookBub suggestion and it’s $0.99 Threads of Suspicion a Dee Henderson book (she appeared on yesterday’s list.)

Threads of Suspicion

The next one came up for me on Amazon for $1.29 Heart of Stone by Lyn Cote. (we had one of her books yesterday, as well.)

Heart of Stone

Amazon again for all of the rest.

One Thursday Morning is $1.35 by T.K.Chapin. I don’t know him as well as the other two authors but have read a few of his books. I wanted to take a chance on this one too.

One Thursday Morning

The next two are FREE. They are among  my previously read books from 2014 and 2016 but I don’t remember a lot about them. I suspect I liked them though, if my vague recollections are what I think they are.

A Mystery, Gone The Next  Ben Rehder

Gone The Next

A Fantasy, Dreamlander K.M Weiland

Dreamlander

I hope you find some of these enticing.

Happy Reading!

Free books October 29, 2019

Two Free books, one from yesterday and a new one today.

One of yesterday’s books was All of You and I was uncertain about it because the author was unfamiliar. Well, I’m reading it and loving it. It’s still FREE so I had to mention it again.

All of You

Jack (Jacqueline) restores vintage planes and, she is in danger at the hands of an abusive ex-fiancé. There is a parallel story in this tale – the life of WWII women delivering aircraft to wherever they are needed to help win the war.

A client is contracting Jack to restore a fighter plane used in the Second World War. The present and past are connected somehow. I haven’t read far enough to have that figured out yet.

In the meantime, her deployed brother is desperate to make sure his sister is protected from her abuser. He’s begged/guilted his wounded and sidelined partner Michael into providing her protection. A challenge. The difficulty with this plan: aside from the impairment of his injuries, she’s resisting his help.

This story has pulled me in, no question. Had to share.

The second FREE book looks interesting, after checking it out a little.

Deadly Alliances

I’m not sure about this one either but the first few pages drew me in.

Her brother is in witness protection for living through the murder of his young colleague. The shooter locked eyes with him and would have killed Prosecutor Reilly Tanner too if sirens hadn’t arrived in time to scare him off .

Even in protection, Reilly’s life is in danger of  assassins and his sister is determined to find ways protect him.

Meet Milana Tanner, Deputy US Marshall.

It will be interesting to see if this keeps me reading all the way through. I hope it does.

Happy Reading, everyone!

P.S. it’s snowing 🙂

Free book October 28, 2019, and a weather update

One FREE book today, courtesy of BookBub’s daily email. All of You

It is mindboggling, the number of new authors out there. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to see so many developing their skills, and using their imagination to provide us with enticing reading material. It’s just hard to keep up with an answer for the do I like this author question.

Confusion popped up again this morning with the free book and another unfamiliar author name. Checking my history, there was a book in 2016 called The Isaac Project and Amazon says I read it. Looking at the cover, I think I did like it. This new one should be likeable too, I think.

There aren’t that many disliked among the chances I take but there are a few. Since my memory seems to be foggy this far down the road, maybe it would be helpful  to delete the disliked and eliminate the uncertainty. Sounds like a plan.

In the meantime, I expect All of You should be a good read.

All of You

Working a career in a guys world, Jacquelyn restores vintage planes and has enough stresses in her own life. She doesn’t need the complication of someone else’s emotional baggage.

Michael’s military career is cut short with severe injuries. He is unable to work but he can fulfil his promise to protect his friend’s baby sister.

Looks like there could be conflict on the horizon.

Weather update:

It looks like our above freezing weather is coming to an end. There have been a few nights with heavy frost but it burned off in the morning sunlight. The day time temps  have now dropped below freezing too. At the moment it’s -3c.

Last evening light dry snow started falling, enough to cover the deck. It’s still here, with more light snow expected. Winter is almost here to stay.

I was counting up the months we had to garden this summer. Mid May to nearly the end of October. About five months. Well, that’s stretching it a bit because about a month of that is only good for spring or fall cleanup. Not warm enough for doing any growing.

20191028_120904

I was looking through the many winter photos clogging up my phone memory. Good memories. The best is yet to come, snow is beautiful in the middle of winter.

Anyway, enough about weather.

Happy Reading!

Free books October 26, 2019

I think I must be losing it. I’m pretty sure I’ve come across a book by this duo recently, Melanie Wilber author and Kevin Wilber editor. It sticks in my mind because it’s unusual to see credit listed as author and editor never mind that they are a husband and wife team. I’ve searched my download history but come up empty, so far anyway. Bottom line, there is a vague memory of their names but I don’t remember the book itself. If I did read it I  can’t say if I liked it or not. It seems strange their names don’t appear anywhere on the cover.

So, three FREE books today!

BookRunes daily email suggested this book Wildflowers

Wildflowers

Then, while I was trying to figure things out I stumbled across this book by the same authors Home for Christmas

Home for Christmas

If it turns out you like Melanie and Kevin Wilber books, they are a prolific duo on Amazon.

Of course, the search also lead to another book (different author) I recognized from 2015 (it’s lovely that Amazon always tells me the purchase date) so we may as well add it to the list today too. Forever Dreams

Forever Dreams

A New Zealand school teacher arrives on a Montana cattle ranch, secretly searching for her missing father.

Happy Saturday and Happy Reading.

Mixed bag of Free books October 21, 2019

Free books this morning comes from a mixed bag of sources. BookBub, BookRunes, and Jennifer Youngblood, author.

Most of the books are written in a style that is, admittedly, not my favorite – lighter romance often involving the rich and the famous. They are well written so can’t be faulted on that level, personal preference is simply the issue here.

Three of the four authors – Jennifer Youngblood, Cami Checketts, and Melissa Storm – are prolific writers and they make good use of Kindle Unlimited. As shown below, a few of their books can be purchased $0.00 right now but I noticed many more can be found read-free on Kindle Unlimited. If you happen to be a subscriber this is good news. If you are interested search by authors name on Amazon and a large number of their books will come up for you.

I’m not sure is this rambling information is helpful at all but, hopefully…

Jenna is more my usual preference and I started reading it last night. It’s great so far.

Jenna

As for the others, The Hot Headed Patriot is one downloaded earlier in the year but the rest are new reads for me. I will check them all out, just in case, you never know when a story will make a connection. Wouldn’t that be a nice surprise. Hope springs eternal!

Happy Monday and Happy Reading!

Free Books – Miller Creek Series plus one October 20, 2019

A friend pointed out that Cathy Bryant’s complete Miller Creek Series is currently FREE on Amazon. I checked it out and sure enough, it is. Over the years I’ve read books 1 – 3 and enjoyed them, now I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series. I know recent posts have included several of these books but it will be nice to see them all together in one place. There is  also a Christmas surprise as a bonus at the end.

Happy Reading this sunny Sunday morning.

Free books October 14, 2019

Two FREE books caught my interest this morning.

The first one is courtesy of the BookRunes daily email.

Celtic Cross was in my downloads for 2015. If I remember right, I did like it and would have shared it if I was blogging back then. It should be a good read. Historical Fiction.

Celtic Cross

The second one is courtesy of the BookBub daily email.

Her Last First Kiss is new to me. Liz Isaacson does show up in my read list but not as often as some authors do. I can’t remember if I liked her style or not. Some write deeper than others and I prefer deeper, personally. I think Liz’s style may be in a lighter vein. We will have to read this and check it out to be sure.

Her Last First Kiss

I have been reading some of the novellas from yesterday and it’s served as a reminder as to why I prefer full length novels.

Summer of Dreams

Summer of Dreams is the first one to be checked out and I loved it. Every now and then a book comes along that lights-up-the-room and this book did that for me, in the beginning at least.

A successful novella will set an even pace from beginning to end. Difficult to do it seems. The common fault is time spent developing the story with a sprint to the end, before running out of pages. The sudden and hurried conclusion spoils whatever the book had going on for itself in the beginning.

That’s what happened here. The beginning of the book was awesome.

Novella format is great when the storyline doesn’t have much going for it and it would be a stretch to make it fit the Novel length. In my opinion, it’s a shame to waste a good idea on a Novella when a longer format could do it justice – leaving a satisfied reader.

The sneak peak at the sequel was disappointing too. It followed one of the other characters, ten years in the future. There was no resolving of the unfinished business in the first book.

Aside from the disappointing ending, it was well worth the read. The characters were great. I loved the way they think, and the resulting interactions between the three of them. Dry humor with audacious characters is the best.

Historical fiction.

One brilliant young woman with a military father disapproving of her engineering dreams.

A brilliant young man seeking an engineering education in the only avenue open to him, Officer Academy training.

The two are thrown together because the accumulation of his misconduct demerits has him facing expulsion and possible imprisonment. He must work to reduce that number to graduate in a few weeks. His reduction assignment is to build a working pump for a fountain in a ‘birdcage.’ That’s what her father called it when he requested military engineering help for his daughter.

Her colorful and resourceful cousin is part of the awesome threesome and between them, life is full of trouble.

Check out Summer of Dreams to see what you think.

Happy Reading!
