Free books December 23, 2019

Two Free books today, they not quite as light as the cozy mysteries yesterday but will still be a good read.

BookBub has Because of the Rain, and BookRunes suggests Light Over Water.

Because of the Rain,  is one I downloaded and read in 2017 and it is FREE again.

Because of the Rain

Amazon quote:

ANNA’S LIFE CHANGES FOREVER ON ONE HORRIFIC NIGHT
WHEN SHE IS ASSAULTED AND LEFT FOR DEAD.

Anna Marquette has everything to live for. Her daughters are in college and, with the support of Paul, her loving husband, she is pursuing her dream of a career in counseling. Then one night, while on a trip to Orlando, the unimaginable happens. She takes a “short cut” to an evening out with Paul and is brutally assaulted.

She’s pregnant as a result. This book had a great impact on me, such that I can still remember reading it. Deborah Raney has a gift for creating characters that come alive, drawing in the reader until you feel like you are living in their skin, making the story that much more memorable, and impactful.

*******

Light Over Water, both the book and the author are new to me but it looks like it is worth taking a chance. It’s FREE too.

Light Over Water

A partial Amazon quote for this historical novel:

Life in Little Cove is safe, familiar and sedate, until events an ocean away draw Sam Eliot and Alison Granger into a tightening spiral of tragedy, failure and betrayal. In April 1917 the United States enters the war in Europe. Sam and Alison are affected by the disintegration of their safe world as Sam enlists, only to experience a personal tragedy soon afterwards that affects his ability to cope as a soldier. Alison, the daughter of a doctor, remains at home in the Maine coastal village and becomes involved in a scandal that shakes her faith in God and humanity.

Currently I’m still reading  the Resort to Love collection

Resort to Love

I’m almost finished book 2 Eureka, California and I’m liking it even better than I liked book 1.

Amazon quote:

Adopted into a family of dysfunctional siblings, Genevieve Wilson doesn’t believe she’s capable of successful relationships, which makes her crush on the pilot at work feel safe. Matt Lake has a perfect life, girlfriend included, but the redhead who works at the Eureka airport makes him smile like never before. Will he give up the flawless life he planned in exchange for the messiness of love, and if so, will Gen risk more heartbreak?

It’s still a bargain at $1.31

Happy Reading!

Christmas is only two more sleeps. Kids are excited.

I wasn’t going to bother putting up a tree, again, this year. Too much like work when I’d rather be reading a book. But then, a little inspiration hit yesterday. I have a box filled with pieces of pine garland already strung with lights from Christmases past. If one was hung  from the hook in this window, I could have a  tree, and the neighbors wouldn’t feel like Scrooge was living in the house with un-festive like windows.

Ok, so mostly I just wanted to have some lights in the window to make it look like someone cared, and since I have no idea where the wreath with the candle shaped light in it went to (probably tossed out in one of my many moves) I had to improvise.

There are definitely lights in the window now. I’m happy.

20191222_172142 (450x800)

And, it won’t be a big job to take it all down.

I do actually like having the house all fixed up with lights and Christmas decorations. It’s like a mood lifter. It creates a fairyland ambiance and I like to sit with a book, listen to music, and drink it all in, for weeks and weeks. Something’s changed this last couple of years, I haven’t wanted to even bother.

I’m glad I felt inspired to make a bit of an effort this year. It makes me feel happy, well, at least happier. Every little positive step in the right direction helps.

There are so many good things to be grateful for in my life and yet the abusiveness of my early childhood overshadows all of it sometimes. It’s hard, facing up to reality, but it has turned out to be worthwhile in the end. I’ve made so many friends over the years that happened to have wounds like mine. Sharing stories together has made life for all of us easier, somehow.

Lately I’ve be blessed with another new friendship and it has connected me with a whole new circle of supportive people. Maybe that’s what’s contributed to me making more of an effort with the Christmas decorations all of a sudden. A new ray of light showed up in my life.

It always amazes me, when I share a little of my story with someone, to find they know exactly what I’m talking about. It’s easy to feel like no one understands and it’s a shock when they do. Earlier this month I shared something I never talk about and that’s what happened – she knew. It was amazingly freeing and validating. I have a feeling there is a lot more story sharing coming in my future. That’s a good thing.

There are a multitude of others feeling the kind of pain I do and I pray, always, that they  will discover supportive friends to share their stories with. That somehow there will be a ray of light, of hope, especially this time of year. They say one in four women experience abuse, I’m sure it’s higher than that. If you are one of them…

I’m wishing you, and every other hurting person – man or woman, the very best in this Christmas season. May you be open to connecting with someone else so you can experience a ray of hope too, both now and in 2020.

Free book December 19, 2019

One FREE book from Bookbub this morning.

There could have been more as their list was longer but I’m always looking for clean. Clean is hard to come by these days. It’s rare in mainstream books so I don’t go there anymore. Last week there were a couple of books that I didn’t recognize in my usual search but I took a chance on them. They looked like they would be ok. Disappointingly, they weren’t. It creates a problem, to accept even mostly clean. The few I took a chance on were a perfect example of what happens when mostly clean is picked. All of a sudden more erotica than usual was showing up as I continued my free search, I had to give it up in frustration. Once I started reading the new books it all made sense. The algorithms recognized what I didn’t and jumped all over it. I’ll be more careful in the future.

This author, Liz Isaacson, writes clean and interesting stories.

The Sleigh on Seventeenth Street – Three Rivers Ranch Series book 14. I’ve read and enjoyed a number of books in this series so expect this one to be good as well.

The Sleigh on 17th Street

Excerpt from Amazon quote:

With a new development going in on the north end of Three Rivers, Camila Cruz is desperate to win the plumbing bid for the mom-and-pop plumbing shop she joined when she came to town four years ago. The project would keep the shop open and allow Cami to buy it from the owners who are ready to retire. It would be the perfect Christmas present.

Dylan Walker is determined to win the bid for Three Rivers Electric Company as well, and the only friendly face he can find at the announcement meeting is Cami’s. Okay, semi-friendly. She’s heard a lot of rumors about the handsome electrician who moonlights as a cowboy, and she doesn’t need her wounded heart to get another shock.

When they both win their respective bids and start to work together, sparks fly ….

I’m currently reading and enjoying book 2 in  A Date With Danger,  a six book Mystery/Suspense/Romance collection. This read falls on the light side – not as light as cozy mysteries but definitely lighter than most thrillers. Lighter is good for me right now so I’m loving this experience.  This collection is still a bargain at $1.32.

A Date With Danger

Amazon excerpt for the first book in this collection

Kimberly Rose Johnson
Librarian Nancy Daley loves a good mystery and enjoys moonlighting as a consultant for the sheriff’s department. Sheriff Deputy Carter Malone expects Tipton, Oregon to be a sleepy small-town, but he miscalculated. When the minor case they are working morphs into something more, things quickly go from harmless to scary. Can these two strong-willed sleuths solve the mystery before it’s too late, and more importantly, what will they do about their growing attraction?

Happy Reading on this wintery morning.

Free and bargain books December 09, 2019

BookBub has a free one for us this morning.

Remembering Christmas is FREE. I’m drawing a blank on this one, although it seems I did read it in 2012. There are other Dan Walsh books in my collection of downloads too and I’ve read most of them by the looks of it. I’ll have to pay better attention this time.

Remembering Christmas

Rick has a life that doesn’t include his parents. He’s never liked his step father and when his mother begs him to come home he reluctantly agrees. Her husband’s stroke leaves her needing help running the family bookstore, a chore Rick is not thrilled about.

********

As promised, here is another installment of the bargain book collections I found on Amazon yesterday.

A Date With Danger, a six book, 1406 page, Romantic/Suspense collection, a bargain at $1.32 CDN. Reading through the blurbs on Amazon, it looks as though this may be a fun read, in places. I think it may have to go the top of my TBR pile. Digging a little deeper into my reading experiences, it appears I’ve read several of these books along the way somewhere. I guess that’s not too surprising as contributors will sometimes go with manuscripts already published.

A Date With Danger

The fun one will be the last one. Delilah Morgan’s dying husband wants to protect her from future suitors lacking his approval so he arranges for the local judge to court her, when the time is right. Unfortunately, he doesn’t remember to share the news of this arrangement with his wife who is, decidedly, not looking to be courted.

*******

A Tuscan Legacy will keep us busy with nine books plus a novella. A good deal at $1.33

A Tuscan Legacy

Amazon quote:

When Isabella Rossi invites each of her adult grandchildren to her estate in the Tuscan hills for her eightieth birthday, she hopes to reunite a family fractured by distance, death, and secrets.

The birthday gift of a painting, arriving unsigned and with no sender’s details, rips open old heartbreak. One family secret has already been revealed, her youngest son Albertino’s illegitimate English daughter. Now it seems there could be yet more secrets.

Returning home, the cousins, scattered across three continents, each discover their lifetime love. When they gather again at the villa as summer ends, the remaining secrets are revealed. But can they be forgiven, or will the mistakes of the past be repeated?

Sounds interesting.

Happy Reading

A bargain book for December 7, 2019

One bargain book so far today so we’ll go with it for now. I’m off to the city in a little bit for writer’s group, so time is short.

Our group is not filled with movers and shakers in the writing world but we all have a little talent, some more than others, and we enjoy each other whenever we get together. Two ladies will travel with me today. It’s fun having that hour each way to visit and get to know one other better. We are forging some lasting friendships.

Back to the subject at hand.

Shattered Image is courtesy of BookBub this morning,  a bargain at $1.31. This author is new to me but after reading the first couple of pages, I’m hooked and looking forward to more.

Shattered Image

This Amazon quote says it well… as an introduction

Kiera Simmons’ career as a high-profile fashion model ends abruptly when a failed relationship nearly lands her in jail. Now she forges a quiet life helping teens understand their eternal value in a world saturated with the distorted messages of society.

Peter Theisen is on the fast track to everything the celebrity life promises with every step of his meteoric rise in the music world orchestrated by his ambitious manager

and that’s all I know, for the moment.

I’m off to the city. It’s a cloudy day or we would take a nice picture to share. One day it will happen.

Happy Reading

A bargain at $0.99 The Christmas Dog a mangy stubborn dog and a new perspective for a bitter old woman.

The Christmas Dog

A Bid for Love

BookRunes has come through with a FREE book today too. One I’ve not read, but I do know the author. A story of betrayal and survival.

This has turned out to be a good day for books.

Bargain books December 4, 2019

Many of these free and bargain books we talk about are available on other platforms, like Kobo and others. I am so immersed in Amazon and Kindle that I forget to mention it, until I’m reminded of my friends using Kobo. Check it out, if you use another platform and haven’t already gone there.

A bargain ($1.32 CDN) book from BookBub this morning The Heart Hopes Lyn Cote, the Opposites Attract Series.

Here is a small quote from Amazon

What could unite a disgruntled DA and the pretty teacher, responsible for his hung jury? Perhaps a little boy in need of love…

The Heart Hopes

So, as I was browsing to see what else was lurking out there I found some other interesting treasures.

Wreck The Halls: a Worst Detective Ever Christmas novella by Christy Barritt ($1.32 CDN)

a snippet from Amazon – Deck the halls with boughs of . . . danger.

Joey Darling and her friend Starla McKnight are all set to host a new TV Christmas light special. But, before filming even begins, things go awry. Legs—with a human body attached—are sticking out of the family’s chimney, wrecking the feel-good holiday show.

Wreck the Halls

Christy Barritt also has a good selection of other bargain books right now as well. Too many to mention this morning but check it out if you are one of her fans. There are some good deals to be had.

Free and bargain books November 28, 2019

Two very different but interesting read suggestions from BookBub this morning.

The first one is a bargain at $0.99 and is a three book Romance collection.

The Soldiers of the Purple Heart Ranch

The mission of Purple Heart Ranch is rehabilitation for soldiers suffering PTSD. The love stories envisioned by author Shanae Johnson have added depth to them with brokenness in the lives of all the characters, not just the soldiers. Her disclaimer at the beginning of book 1 acknowledges that it takes more than love to bring healing to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder but she feels love goes a long way toward making it happen. I think she’s right. Love does have special healing qualities. Especially when paired with other therapies.

I’m a fan of love stories with depth. This should be good.

The soldiers of the purple heart ranch

The second BookBub suggestion is FREE

The Unveiling

A historical novel with knights and wars and kingdoms needing heirs. The story of a sister out for revenge in the unjust death of her brother. Four years she spends learning to be a warrior then disguises herself as a squire (a guy) to gain access to his murderer.

Once she has him in her presence, doubts arise. Does she truly have all the facts straight?

The Unveiling

Last but not least:

BookRunes has a FREE suggestion this morning.

Love’s Thankful Heart is a three book collection of Amish love stories. With three different authors I don’t recall reading before. The recurring underlying theme in each romance seems to be finding a way to help the less fortunate.

Most often, the Amish live in community, with their own language, culture, and rules of conduct. Farming is the preferred way of life, using the methods of bygone days. Horse and buggy, with a shunning of modern conveniences. Their language is similar to German and some of their common words are sprinkled liberally throughout the story. At least that’s how it is in this first one anyway.

All things Amish have become very popular in the last decade or two and many books have been written from their point of view. This collection looks to be a soft introduction into their world, if you are new to reading their stories.

Love's Thankful Heart

Another day of Happy Reading

Bargain books November 26, 2019

BookBub started it all this morning with several bargain books.

The first bargain ($0.99) is from a new favorite author Alana Terry. Forget Me Now is the gripping suspense story of a young woman who’s lost a portion her memory through brain injury trauma. She’s has no idea what’s happened to her and no ability to retain new memories when she does figure things out. Everyone close to her is dead and it’s clear she’s next.  There are some tense moments in store for her and for us.

Forget me now

The second bargain book ($1.99)  is a change of pace. In The Field of Grace is a retelling of the story of Ruth and Boaz. This tale is popular with authors and there have been many versions written through the years. This one seems to be from a different point of view, which is new. It’s usually told from Ruth’s perspective with Boaz taking a minor role. This time, the story starts out from his point of view, immediately catching my interest.

I don’t know this author but I’m looking forward to the experience.

In the Field of Grace

And finally, an Amazon suggested bargain book ($1.99) is a beloved collection from iconic Canadian author Janette Oke. We’ve been reading and watching movies of her pioneer stories for decades. This Canadian West Collection contains six of her most popular books.

Canadian West Collection

1 When Calls the Heart
2 When Comes the Spring
3 When Breaks the Dawn
4 When Hope Springs New
5 Beyond the Gathering Storm
6 When Tomorrow Comes

My video stash still has the movie box collection for three of these popular books. It’s nice to bring them out again every now and then.

Happy Reading.

Today is Grey Cup parade through the city of Winnipeg.  People are out in droves to honour the win of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers football team and the energy level is high. I’m loving the internet live stream for those of us not able to be there in person. I think I will wait awhile to read. It’s been twenty nine years since their last championship win so this could be the parade of a lifetime, definitely not is to be missed.

CJOB live is the place to find it if you follow Canadian football.

Free books November 25, 2019

BookRunes FREE book suggestion today,  Among the Poppies is the powerful story of courage and determination in the face of danger and critical public opinion.

Gwyn has learned, and learned to love, auto mechanics living life close to the side of her chauffeur father. She’s also learned the art of being a lady at the hands of her benefactress and father’s employer. Social norms of the day are restrictive, a woman driving and fixing automobiles was just not done. Gwyn doesn’t care about any of that. There is a desperate need for ambulance drivers with mechanics to keep them on the road. Gwyn has the skills to do both and she plans to answer the call.

What she doesn’t plan on is to attract the romantic interest of a handsome officer who can’t help but worry about her safety. He can worry but she will go where she’s ordered. Even to the front lines in the midst of battle. The wounded need her.

I think her courage is inspiring to all of us, not just to women.

Her loving officer was a good man, supporting her in the face of danger.

This book was free in the spring and the reading was memorable.

Among the Poppies

BookBub offers a FREE suggestion today too. The Healing Journey, book 12 in The Mountain Series

This Healing Journey

This historical novel is set in the pioneer days of the Canadian Rockies. A young woman sets out on a search for the son her father was forced to give up many years earlier. Her path crosses with that of a young pioneer man. An injured child has appeared on his homestead and he needs her help caring for the little girl.

I’ve not read this story but I have downloaded five other books in this series by Misty M. Beller. For sure I’ve read two of them. I’m looking forward to checking this one out after reading the first few pages.

Happy Reading

We are so excited, here in Manitoba, Canada. Our football team The Winnipeg Blue Bombers won the Canadian Football League Grey Cup last night after  a very long losing streak. It has been twenty nine years since the last Winnipeg Grey Cup win in the championship battle between the East and the West.

We were the underdog in this match with the Hamilton Tiger Cats, a team from Ontario Canada, and the media was predicting a Hamilton win. (The Bombers hadn’t won against them so far this year.)

This game was different. The Bombers were hungry for a win and, to-a-man, they were willing to do whatever it took. One of their best guys was playing injured and not about to be stopped. It worked. They won 33 to 13.

Winnipeg is a staunch, and very vocal, Bomber town. It would be an understatement to say we are over the moon with this win. Everyone is talking about it. There will be a victory parade through town tomorrow. Celebration time.

Free books November 21, 2019

BookBub suggested a FREE book this morning Operation Married by Christmas, written by an author showing up here regularly. It looks like a fun Christmas story, maybe it would even make a good Christmas movie.

Operation Married by Christmas

BookRunes has a suggestion today,  One Thursday Morning, by another regular author on this site. I downloaded this earlier this month but haven’t gotten to it yet.

One Thursday Morning

Currently I’m reading and loving The Trouble in Willow Falls. It is a fun read and has some great characters. It’s still FREE if you haven’t already snagged a copy

The Trouble in Willow Falls

’til tomorrow…

Happy reading!
