Free and bargain books February 21, 2020

Author Jennifer Youngblood has a couple of suggestions for us this morning.

Billionaire romances seem to be all the rage these days. I thought a subject like this automatically translates as tacky. I’m changing my attitude. After coming across a few great stories recently, I found some of them truly are tacky free. I’ve read and enjoyed a couple of  Cami Checketts’ (Jennifer’s friend) books in the last year and I’m expecting this to be a good experience too.

Shadows in the Curtain (Billionaire Beach Romance book 7) is FREE

Shadows in the Curtain

Amazon quote:

Every stage actress wants fans, but what happens when one goes too far?
Emmy has the perfect life— a house on the beach, a successful career headlining the local theater, and love. But when a brutal murder brings unimaginable grief, Emmy’s world comes crashing down. As she tries to pick up the pieces, she can’t seem to avoid Josh, the new fireman in town.
Emmy does her best to fight the sizzle in her chest when Josh is near. But with the stalker still out there, terrorizing her and those she cares about, she can’t fall for anyone—especially Josh, a suspect in the murder investigation.
If Emmy allows a man to get close, it’s not just her heart she puts at risk, it’s her life.

Jennifer Youngblood is offering a bargain collection of her own this morning. It’s $2.62 CDN and $1.99 US. I’ve read one of the four books (False Identity) and downloaded two (and Burned) of them in 2017.

Romance Suspense Collection: 4 Complete Novels

Romance Suspense Coolection

Amazon quote:

False Trust

Burned

But something is tell her that she needs to return to the sleepy little town of Stoney Creek, Alabama where she grew up. She hasn’t been there since her father was killed in a boating accident—or was he murdered? She takes a job as a safety consultant at the local sawmill—the same place where her father worked—and sets out to discover the truth about his death.

Promise Me Love

When tragedy unfolds to betrayal … a haunting love refuses to die …

Chloe Kensley tries to put her life back together after her fiancé, Dan, is killed. Things get really bizarre when she starts seeing Dan’s ghost. He torments her in her dreams, and her terror mounts to new heights when she starts seeing him during waking hours.

In her search to carve out a new life for herself, Chloe gets caught up in a love triangle with two very different brothers who have glamorous yet turbulent lives. She unwittingly becomes the pawn in a deadly game of intrigue and betrayal where she must fight to stay alive amidst the growing darkness. Will the ghosts of the past prevent her from truly finding love, or will she finally be delivered when darkness falls?

False Identity

A chance encounter leads to a chilling deception where nothing is as it seems …

Chancy Hamilton can’t bear the thought of spending the holidays without her late husband Max who died in a plane crash. When Chancy and her teenage son, Travis, have an argument, Travis storms out of the house and ends up in the wrong part of town where he is attacked by a group of thugs. When a homeless man comes to his rescue, he invites the man home to have a meal with his mom and little sister.

Gabe Jones is not like any other homeless man Chancy has ever seen—he’s confident, intelligent, and devastatingly handsome. Jake, Chancy’s boyfriend, takes an instant dislike to Gabe and warns Chancy to stay away from him. Nevertheless, their lives become intertwined, and Chancy is soon thrown into nightmarish events, bringing a terrifying aftermath that threatens not only her, but also the lives of her children.

I guess while we are at it we may as well add another hot collection to the mix. It promises to be clean. I don’t have any other downloads from this author but she looks familiar. Maybe she has taken part in some of the other collections I’ve read lately. I need to explore the possibility of this being a good read and the beginning pages of the first book look like they will deliver. The three book collection is a bargain at $1.29 CDN

Hot Navy SEAL Romance Collection: 3 Sweet, Contemporary, Military Romances

Hot Navy Seal collection

Amazon quote:

The Found Warrior

When Blaine Hammerton, Navy SEAL, is notified that his father died of a heart attack, he finds himself in Brooklyn, shaking hands with people he’s never met and accepting a random key from one of his father’s friends. As he finds himself lost in a mental fog on the streets of Manhattan, he never expects to walk into an art gallery, and he really never expects to discover a beautiful woman…having a breakdown.

The Dream Groom

Scar Walker, professional football player and ex Navy Seal, only wanted to focus on getting his gym built for military vets while he was in San Diego. He didn’t want to take crap from his brother, he didn’t want to deal with a lippy waitress, and he really didn’t want random people calling him on the phone.

Shayla Castle came to San Diego to finally live out her childhood dream. When she accidentally calls the mysterious phone number left on her table while waitressing, she never anticipated it would be the handsome jerkface soldier who chewed her out that morning. It confuses her even more when the same jerkface shows up the next night and saves her from an attacker.

The Broken Warrior

Zane Kent, ex Navy SEAL and Thor look-alike, takes pride in keeping calm in stressful situations while being part of a ‘special teams’ vigilante group. But when he walks into a mission blind and discovers the woman who broke his heart 7 years ago is the target, the lines become fuzzy and his pride flies out the window.

Sarah Hamilton moved to San Diego to start a new life with her son and start a matchmaking business. She is shocked when Zane Kent shows up at a client meeting and down-right stunned when she finds herself asking for his protection. But it’s fine because their relationship is professional now. Too bad he kisses her. Good thing she slaps him.

Sorry for such a long post this morning but I couldn’t resist including these great synopses. I’m sure the writers will do a good job of delivering but if not the lives of the characters promise enough excitement to carry the show.

A couple of other sources have not weighed in yet this morning, I’ll let you know if there’s more.

Happy Reading!

BookRunes has a FREE book suggestion for us today. Reading the synopsis I can’t decide how I feel about it. It is free though so I guess I’ll take it and decide later whether I like it or not.

Alice’s Journey West Finding Her Way

Finding Her Way

Amazon quote:

The American Civil war has torn Alice Cleary’s family apart, and cast the children amongst what friends and relations would have them. And though Alice appreciates the home she and her younger brother, Will, have had with her aunt and uncle, when they pressure her to marry an older man for their benefit, she flees to the sanctuary of the church. There, sister Agnes helps to set Alice’s feet on a path that will lead her across the country. BookBub also has a FREE suggestion. This is book one in a series. It was offered awhile back in a three book collection, I remember reading it then and liking it. A good read.

On His Bended Knee: The Brides of Purple Heart Ranch book 1

On His Bended Knee

Amazon quote:

Sgt. Dylan Banks lost more than just his leg in the war. His fiancée and family turned their backs on him as well. Now, he’s determined to create a safe place where wounded warriors like himself can heal. But a hidden zoning law requires all residents of the Purple Heart Ranch to be married. To save his dream, Dylan and his men will have to tie the knot—but can a man with such deep scars inside and out believe in love again?

Happy Reading

on another beautiful, crisp day. It’s -18c and supposed to be even warmer tomorrow. Yay! Winter is on it’s way out, although… it’s not in any hurry.

Today is a read and enjoyed day

Today is a lite day for interesting books. It’s a great time to catch up on  read-and-enjoyed stories. The list is probably heavier with Romance than Mystery but there will be a variety, I hope.

A Model Bride is the latest book read and it suited my mood of the day. It is set in England with a side trip to Edinburgh, Scotland. The real story, though, is about the insecurities the characters have to work their way through. It was the perfect balance between lite and heavy, for me anyway.

Model Bride

********

A Marriage of Convenience this is the fun story of a much appreciated care-giver and a beloved absentee grandson, jointly inheriting a successful ranching enterprise. To keep the inheritance they have to agree to be married in six months time. She is actively involved in running the ranch and is good at it. He’s from New York and a city boy through and through. And… they’ve never met. She needs her share to provide for her son. He doesn’t need it but decides he wants it.

Garden of Dreams I can’t describe this story as well as Amazon, so here is their quote:

Raised by a mother who was haunted by worry and fear, Jill vowed to live a different kind of life. As a young woman, she planned out what she wanted—a husband, a large home full of children, the opportunity to paint and grow a beautiful garden, a community of believers, and a best friend—then watched as it all came true in the art-filled town of Ashland, Oregon.

But Jill has a secret that she has kept from those she loves most, including her husband and her best friend, Caye…

This is one of my favorite book on this list.

Garden of Dreams

*******

Cold Terror This is another of my favorites on this list. A forensic artist, she’s vacationing on a secluded island where the local sheriff (who hears the local gossip and knows she can) asks her to do a facial reconstruction on a young murder victim they haven’t been able to identify. In the midst of this task a ferocious someone enters her cottage, and with threats, attempts to kill her. She manages to escape and get help but no one knows who the intruder is or why he keeps trying to kill her.

The Turn of a Wheel a blending of romance, intrigue, and danger. A very good story

There are a number of partially read collections still in the queue but we’ll wait a bit to mention them.

Currently I’m reading In The Field of Grace, the story of Naomi and Ruth. A daughter-in- law honoring her husband’s mother even though they are both widowed and are from different cultures and countries. When Naomi decides to return to the land of her birth Ruth vows to follow her and look after her. There have been many retellings of this popular Bible story but this one stands out with it’s different perspective. I’m really liking it so far (I’m still near the beginning) and expect to keep liking it.

I hope you are feeling inspired and ready for the next batch of free and bargain books. Tomorrow could be a good day.

Books Read and Enjoyed January 2, 2020

It seems, today is not a good day for free or bargain books but there is a long list of read-and-enjoyed books to talk about, so let’s get to it.

Three Days in Heaven, I think this is probably my favorite story on this list. Although I haven’t refreshed my memory about the others yet, to verify this statement. For sure it is one of my favorites.

I didn’t know what to expect with this story. How would he handle this subject matter. Would his treatment of the idea make sense? Would the characters and their actions come across as believable? I think he did a great job on all aspects. It is believable and gives an accurate, if rather unorthodox, view of what God is like. To give the author credit: he isn’t trying to cater to anyone’s sensibilities, just giving an honest view of heaven as he understands it.

Some-things I know he’s got right; God loves all of us deeply (most of us have no idea how deeply), he has a large sense of humor, he doesn’t look at our actions through the lens of a strict set of rules and regulations (the way we assume he does), rather he looks deeply at the longings and intents of our hearts.

The author weaves an engaging story that leaves us with hope and a feel good experience.

Three Days in Heaven

Alias Raven Black  Second Chances book 2. Great book. It didn’t take much effort for me to spend the time needed to make my way through this story.

The FBI has some evidence against Raven and they are demanding cooperation if she wants to avoid prison. They want her to go undercover as a nanny for a mob boss’s young kids. She has no training for undercover work never mind filling the role as a nanny. They know enough about her actions in past indiscretions to believe she has the bravado to pull it off. She will find the evidence they need for a solid conviction.

Things become complicated when Raven discovers she’s not the only undercover operative in the house. Nor is the FBI the only agency represented. On top of that, her dad keeps showing up as a friend to her employer. What in the world is he up to?

Lots of awesome twists and turns in this story.

Alias Raven Black

Remembering Christmas

Rick has never allowed his mother’s new husband to have the role of dad in his life. It’s been years since he escaped to make a new life in California. His visits home have been rare and brief. Now, after her husband’s major stroke, his mother needs Rick’s help. For more than just the few days he’s expecting.

There are many things he needs to learn while he’s here and the truth is at the top of the list.

Free and bargain books December 09, 2019

BookBub has a free one for us this morning.

Remembering Christmas is FREE. I’m drawing a blank on this one, although it seems I did read it in 2012. There are other Dan Walsh books in my collection of downloads too and I’ve read most of them by the looks of it. I’ll have to pay better attention this time.

Remembering Christmas

Rick has a life that doesn’t include his parents. He’s never liked his step father and when his mother begs him to come home he reluctantly agrees. Her husband’s stroke leaves her needing help running the family bookstore, a chore Rick is not thrilled about.

As promised, here is another installment of the bargain book collections I found on Amazon yesterday.

A Date With Danger, a six book, 1406 page, Romantic/Suspense collection, a bargain at $1.32 CDN. Reading through the blurbs on Amazon, it looks as though this may be a fun read, in places. I think it may have to go the top of my TBR pile. Digging a little deeper into my reading experiences, it appears I’ve read several of these books along the way somewhere. I guess that’s not too surprising as contributors will sometimes go with manuscripts already published.

A Date With Danger

The fun one will be the last one. Delilah Morgan’s dying husband wants to protect her from future suitors lacking his approval so he arranges for the local judge to court her, when the time is right. Unfortunately, he doesn’t remember to share the news of this arrangement with his wife who is, decidedly, not looking to be courted.

*******

A Tuscan Legacy will keep us busy with nine books plus a novella. A good deal at $1.33

A Tuscan Legacy

Amazon quote:

When Isabella Rossi invites each of her adult grandchildren to her estate in the Tuscan hills for her eightieth birthday, she hopes to reunite a family fractured by distance, death, and secrets.

The birthday gift of a painting, arriving unsigned and with no sender’s details, rips open old heartbreak. One family secret has already been revealed, her youngest son Albertino’s illegitimate English daughter. Now it seems there could be yet more secrets.

Returning home, the cousins, scattered across three continents, each discover their lifetime love. When they gather again at the villa as summer ends, the remaining secrets are revealed. But can they be forgiven, or will the mistakes of the past be repeated?

Sounds interesting.

Free & bargain books November 29, 2019

A FREE book mentioned by one of my regular author contacts is written by popular author, Pepper Basham. Chautona Havig and Pepper often contribute to the same collections and I always like what they come up with. I know I will enjoy this new story too.

Jane By The Book

Healing from the shame of a wedding day that didn’t end in a marriage, Jane relocated and spent the last four years working in the grand old B & B of a friend.

The job has grown with her and she’s become expert at successfully managing the housekeeping end of a thriving hotel business. This skill, while confidence building, has created a problem for her. Her boss/friend (Nora) has roped Jane into helping her fiancé (Ethan) train staff for his newly acquired hotel in England. He is paying all of her expenses and it’s been years since she’s done any travelling, maybe it’s time to step out and explore new places. With that decided, she’s feeling quietly excited.

It doesn’t take long for Titus to enter the scene and turn her orderly life upside down. Unexpectedly, he finds dramatic changes in his life as well. The fiction stories ever consuming his attention suddenly aren’t quite as alluring as real life.

This sounds like a fun read.

Jane by The Book

BookRunes FREE suggestion today is Orphaned Hearts (A Heart of Africa Romance) Conservationist, Simon Hartley is left with a daughter to raise when his wife dies in childbirth. In his grief, his daughter and orphan elephants become his whole life.

Lady Abigail Chadwick wants to escape English society and postpone an arranged marriage. A year spent teaching in Africa’s Good Shepherd Orphanage will make this happen for her.

He is not thrilled about having to rescue a traveller stranded at the airport but he does it.

Free LPC books November 27, 2019

Possibly the last FREE LPC (Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas) ebook blast of the year. It’s hard to believe this year of 2019 is coming to a close already. It feels like it’s barely started. I still find myself about to write 2018 every now and again. To think that a decade is coming to a close as well, is even harder to imagine.

If this is LPCs last big push of the year we will have to savor these books and make them last into the new year. Mind you, we have other sources so we won’t panic, but we can be a little sad.

The Highlanders  The Highlanders: A Smitten Historical Romance Collection written by four authors. I’ve read and enjoyed one of the authors –  J’Nell Ciesielski. I’m looking forward to this collection if her previous work is any indication of what’s in store for us. I’m sure it is gong to be good.

Night Fox a love story set in Ireland 1715

A Tender Siege set in the USA 1763

The Year Without Summer set in Scotland 1816

The Violinist set in Idaho, USA 1915

Practically Married  Practically Married is a book I’ve read and enjoyed. I think it was offered as pre-release, you had to sign up for the authors email list to get it.

The story starts with an online relationship.

Tom and Ashley decided to meet in person (they had only talked by video) and marry soon. Ashley sold her house, quit her job, and packed up for the move to his state. Only, he didn’t arrive at the airport to pick her up as planned. Finally improvising, she made her way to his house in time to find he had died in an accident and the existence of a girlfriend was news to his family.

She may have been a surprise but the shocker was to find he had inadvertently willed her the farmhouse he shared with his cousin and farming partner.

With all these new revelations it seems she didn’t know him as well as she thought she did. Now she’s legally tied to his large family and no one is happy about it. She is a fixer, maybe she think of a way to make the situation work out well for everyone.

Murder in the Family  Murder in the Family is another book I’ve read and enjoyed. Probably through another pre-release offer.

Molly is a professional storm chaser and hasn’t been home to visit her dysfunctional family in years. She wouldn’t be here now except her beloved aunt died and named Molly sole beneficiary of her estate. Her death is a shock but the reading of her will is a much bigger shock.

The level of family greed is legendary. She wants no part in any of it. Except, she’s backed into a corner with the terms of the will. There is another choice that would let her walk away but it’s not one she’s willing to accept.

To make matters worse her aunt was a hoarder and the house is a dumping place for everyone’s things. The stuffed full interior smells like something died, the last roommate has disappeared, and – the family is convinced there’s buried treasure in the house and it’s their right to come in and take it.

Molly isn’t afraid to chase tornados but she doesn’t feel like she has the courage to stand up to the abusive members of her family. Her aunt seems to think she is the only one in the family who does have the courage.

Among the Poppies  Among The Poppies was a book on our FREE list a couple of days ago. It’s worth considering again though.

Below is part of what I said about this book on the 25th. This story is a good read.

Gwyn has learned, and learned to love, auto mechanics living life close to the side of her chauffeur father. She’s also learned the art of being a lady at the hands of her benefactress and father’s employer. Social norms of the day are restrictive, a woman driving and fixing automobiles was just not done. Gwyn doesn’t care about any of that. There is a desperate need for ambulance drivers with mechanics to keep them on the road. Gwyn has the skills to do both and she plans to answer the call.

Among the Poppies is written by one of the authors involved with the first book collection today.

Sand Creek Serenade  Sand Creek Serenade sounds like a book I’ve read but I’m not seeing it in my list. In any event, I enjoyed the book I did read and I have plans to read and enjoy this one too.

Part of the synopsis on Amazon:

One woman with a deep desire to serve and help. One brave who will stop at nothing to save his people. Each willing to die for their beliefs and love for one another. Will their sacrifice be enough?

As a female medical doctor in 1864, Sadie Hoppner is no stranger to tragedy and loss. While she grapples with the difficulties of practicing medicine at a Colorado outpost, she learns that finding acceptance and respect proves especially difficult at Fort Lyon.

Cheyenne brave Five Kills wants peace between his people and the American Army.

Answering the Call Answering the Call is a devotional written…

Based on the author’s experiences as a paramedic, these inspirational devotionals tap into the concerns and issues that trouble men and women serving as first responders. First responders answer the call. (quote from Amazon)

This topic is dear to my heart as I’ve never forgotten my five years spent several decades ago as first responder in a small town. The experience provided a little taste of what it would be like as a full time career first responder in a larger area. Not an easy life. There are many life changing things you can’t unsee, yet your heart of compassion wants to be there for others in times of crisis.

It’s true, career first responders are unsung heroes. I expect this book will give us a little glimpse into the lives they lead. I know the glimpse will lead to appreciation, especially if we ever have need of their services. Remembering a little of how it is for them will deepen our appreciation.

While I took a break from this post to let it settle a bit before publishing, I was thinking back over my experiences on ambulance. I did face fatalities of different kinds, from time to time, but I was spared the difficult scenes of massive injury. I covered many shifts due to my availability as a stay-at-home mom and the only call with car crash trauma that should have been mine was covered by a crew mate who needed to trade shifts with me for that day. I was sorry about the accident but grateful to have been spared the call.

A decade or so earlier while listening to a nurse friend (in another small town many miles further west) talk about riding ambulance, this feeling of horror came over me at the thought of having to do such a job. It’s funny how it goes sometimes. Who knew that one day I would agree to the same job because the town needed me.

I’m grateful to have been spared horrendous scenes that would live forever in my memory. At the same time though I have many rewarding memories of being there when patients with health issues needed help. If I had it to do over again, knowing what I know, I would say yes in a heart beat.

I think my deepest appreciation for first responders comes more from what I know I didn’t experience rather than from what I did. I’m looking forward to reading Answering the Call, to see life from someone else’s perspective.

So, getting back to the subject of books. Enjoy the latest interesting and FREE offerings from LPC Books and we look forward to seeing more from them in the new year.

Happy Reading

A nice bunch of Free books November 20, 2019

We have a nice bunch of FREE books today from Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas (LPC Books). I’m always excited when I see their email because they often have newly published book in the list. There are six books this time and all but two are new to me. This makes my Day! Hurry is a must as these are only free until November 22nd.

The Trouble in Willow Falls The Trouble in Willow Falls is book 2 in the  series about the struggles of small town life trying to re-invent itself.

God Bless the Child  God Bless the Child must be book 2 or 3 or so in the Main Street Clinic Series, unless there is another similar series and I’m mixing them up. In any event, it’s a touching story about a family therapist with a big heart for hurting and troubled children.

Mourning Dove Mourning Dove  a historical novel set in the 1970’s deep south, Memphis Tennessee. It’s the story of two siblings with a complicated life. In this case both the book and the author are new to me. An new adventure.

A Perfect Weakness  A Perfect Weakness has been on the FREE list before and I have read it. It’s about a doctor who, for guilt reasons, decided to stop practicing, and he’s arriving in a pioneer town where they are in desperate need of him. In fact they expected he would be replacing their aging doctor. They do their best to limp along without his help, until disaster strikes.  Sometimes life gives us a chance to make new decisions — if only we will.

Life in Chapel Srings  Life in Chapel Springs is book 4 in the series   The ups and downs of small town life while trying  to keep a low profile in a high profile world. It appears I’ve already downloaded books 1 and 3 in this series but I’m not sure I’ve read them. A mystery in need of solving.

Tested by Fire  Tested by Fire is book 1 in the Medic-7  Series and has been FREE before. I do remember reading this one, it was worth it, for sure.

Happy Reading!

Free books November 5, 2019

It’s chilly here today, -10c feels like -18c with the wind. A perfect time to cozy up with a cup of tea and a good book. Especially a chilly Christmas book. The Chain You Forge, is inspired by Mr. Scrooge in Charles Dickens’ classic story A Christmas Carol.

This is our bargain for today at $1.31 and suggested by BookBub. Retelling of classic tales is popular these days. Some are better than others, it will be interesting to see what form  this one takes.

The Chain You Forge

I did find a couple of attractive looking FREE books on Amazon this morning.

Murder in Half Moon Bay is a cozy mystery that has been showing up regularly on the  FREE list for a number of years. It looks like fun. And now that I upload the cover it  appears it’s been mentioned here before. I guess it can’t hurt to show it again.

Murder on Half Moon Bay

This FREE one is new to me. Bear Creek. It’s a historical novel set in the old west (USA) back in the days of pioneers, outlaws, gunfights, and gun toting- fast shooting lawmen. I’m not sure what to expect from this author but I’m hoping for good things.
