Bargain books March 1, 2020

It’s funny how things go sometimes. I’ve been thinking back on yesterday’s post and the Traditions of Leap Year theme. It makes me chuckle, the way the day’s book selections went for us. More often than not Romance novels show up regularly but yesterday when romance – chick-flick style – would have fit with the topic perfectly, that’s not what we got. Irony. We were talking about Sadie Hawkins day where tradition say’s it’s one day where a woman can propose to the man of her choosing, if she can catch him. Since most of the available men we know live in books, it’s a good job we weren’t taking the whole subject very seriously. The lack of good novels could have ruined our whole day.

Getting back to every day topics.

Gospel E-books has some bargains for us today (they are on FaceBook). Author Max Lucado is a prolific non-fiction writer and has been for many years. I haven’t read this book but I’ve read some of his others and appreciate his wisdom. I particularly like buying his greeting cards, he has such a thoughtful way of expressing what I’m feeling.

$1.99 for one of his books is good.

A Gentle Thunder: Hearing God Through the Storm

A Gentle Thunder

Amazon quote:

How far do you want God to go in getting your attention? Don’t answer too quickly. What if God moved you to another land? (As He did Abraham.) What if He called you out of retirement? (Remember Moses?) How about the voice of an angel or the bowel of a fish (Gideon and Jonah.) God does what it takes to get our attention. That’s the message of this book: the relentless pursuit of God.

Another bargain. This time it’s YA fiction from an author unfamiliar to me. The source is trusted so I expect it will be a good read. It’s $1.99 as well.

Gilt Hollow (Blink)

Gilt Hollow

Amazon quote

Willow Lamott’s best friend is a convicted killer, and no one in the small town of Gilt Hollow will let her forget it. Over four long years, she’s tried to fade into the background—but none of that matters when Ashton Keller comes striding into school, fresh out of juvie and fueled by revenge. The moment their eyes meet, Willow no longer feels invisible. Drawn to the vulnerability behind Ashton’s mask of rage, she sinks deeper into his sinister world and begins to question whether he’s a villain, a savior, or both.

Ashton thought he wanted vengeance, until Willow Lamott stepped back into his life. Now he longs to clear his name and become the person she sees in him. But the closer they get to uncovering the truth, the darker the secrets become, and Ashton wonders if his return to Gilt Hollow will destroy everyone he loves.

A bargain ($0.99) that popped up while I was busy searching –  Falling for You. This is book 2 in the Bradford Sisters series, I’ve read book 1 and I think I liked it. I will have to double check that just to be sure. Book 3 Sweet on You is a recent download from a few days ago and it is still $0.99 as well.

Falling for You (A Bradford Sisters Romance Book #2)

Falling for you Wade

Amazon quote:

Famously beautiful model Willow Bradford is taking a temporary break from her hectic schedule to work as the innkeeper at her family’s small-town bed-and-breakfast. She was enjoying the peace of her hometown, Merryweather, Washington, right up until she came face-to-face with Corbin Stewart, the man she loves to hate. A thoughtful rule-follower by nature, Willow threw caution to the wind four years ago when she entrusted her heart to Corbin–and suffered the consequences when it all fell apart.

Former NFL quarterback Corbin is forceful, charming, and accustomed to getting what he wants . . . except where Willow Bradford is concerned. Unable to forget her, he’s never stopped regretting what happened between them. When their paths unexpectedly cross again, he’s determined to make her give him a second chance.

When a decades-old missing persons case finds Corbin and Willow working together, they’re forced to confront their past and who they’ve become–and whether they can risk falling for one another all over again.

Still a bargain at $0.99

Sweet on You (A Bradford Sisters Romance Book #3)

Sweet on You

Looks like there is no shortage of romance today!

Free and Bargain books January 31, 2020

BookBub has a bargain for us, $0.99 is what it shows up as for me (CDN) but their email says $1.28. It will be a surprise for us all maybe.

Legacy Restored book 2 in the Legacy Series. Robin Patchen is another author to show up regularly in my TBR pile. I’m looking forward to this new read.

Legacy Restored

Amazon quote:

Angelica Rossi deserves to be behind bars, but if secretly working with the police to take down an art thief will keep her out of prison, she’s willing to take the deal—even when she discovers the thief is also a brute and a murderer. As a former con artist, she’s learned to take care of herself.

Grieving his sister’s fatal overdose, Donovan Gilcreast retreated to an eighteenth century lakeside Victorian owned by an old friend, where he works on his paintings in the mornings and restores the house the rest of the day. He blames himself for not protecting Katie, and he blames Angelica Rossi, Katie’s old friend, for introducing her to drugs years before. When Angel, the owner’s sister, moves into the house, Donovan tries to keep his distance, but her bruises pull at his protective nature. Who would hurt a tiny thing like her?

Angel has no idea why the brooding recluse hates her, but despite his glares and grunts, she finds his quiet presence comforting, especially amid the fear and confusion of working as a confidential informant.

I found an interesting bargain suggestion on Amazon, it’s for a book and author new to me. It looks like it’s worth a try at $0.99.

The Vacant House

The Vacant House

Amazon quote:

It all begins when best-selling author Sophie O’Brion is the last person to see a murder victim alive. She looks even more guilty when a woman from her church is beaten, and Sophie was seen with her just hours before. Suddenly, people she has known her entire life begin pointing accusing fingers at her.

Marine Master Sergeant Burke Maguire, an old flame who dumped Sophie years ago, has recently been hired as a police officer in Forman Falls, Texas, and is assigned her case. She doesn’t want his help.

As she gets deeper and deeper into trouble, though, she must rely on him, but trusting him is another matter.

Frozen Footprints is a thriller from last October and it’s FREE again. I have a feeling I’ve not read it yet. This is a YA and up read.

Frozen Footprints

Amazon quote:

When her twin brother disappears and a ransom note shows up, eighteen-year-old Charlene’s world is shattered. Fearing the worst, she determines to find him before it’s too late. Her quest hurls her into a twisted, frigid world of snow and ice . . . and leads to terror in an isolated cabin. Together the twins struggle for survival while enduring fierce trials of mind, body, and spirit. Devoid of all worldly comfort and consolation, will faith and hope be enough to get them through this chilling nightmare? And where is Charlene’s hero when she needs one most?

********

The Collins Case is a shorter read from last year and it is FREE again too. I think I did read this one.

The Collins Case

Amazon quote:

FBI Special Agent Julie Ann Davidson isn’t assigned the case, but she works it anyway because she knows the Collins family. Add in a baffling case of internet thievery, and Ann and her partner, Patrick Duncan, have plenty to think about.

Who took the Collins family and why?

One thing’s certain: time is running out.

If Ann and Patrick don’t work fast, Rachel Collins and her kids will die.

Happy Reading on a quiet Friday night.

I’m back. I did think about blogging over Christmas but, it was a nice break just to be with family. Nothing interesting showed up in the daily emails or I would have been posting for sure.

Today, Chautona Havig has a FREE book on offer. Everard (Not-So-Fairy Tales) it is sort of a retelling of a fairy tale and is on my 2018 reading list. My memory is short on details but I do remember liking this one.

Everard

I’ve also found a couple of FREE books on Amazon from even farther back. Apparently I did read them but will need a refresher to remember them.

Finding Her Way is the historical story of a city girl travelling by wagon train to make a new life in the wild west. I’ll have to read it again to decide if I liked it.

Finding Her Way

I’ve read This Time Forever but it’s been even longer, 2012 or so. It’s FREE too. I’ll have to read this again along with you.

This Time Forever

BookRunes has a FREE book today. The Defiant Bride

A wealthy heiress and obedient daughter, her father disapproves of her choice in men and sends her away as an embarrassment to the family.

Travelling west the train is set upon by bandits and she’s kidnapped. One of the bandits seems to be helping her but she still doesn’t trust him.

I’m not sure about this author or the story but it looks to be worth a shot.

Free book December 1, 2019

Author Chautona Havig made another suggestion, today.  Ghost of a Girl  is FREE It’s Young Adult (YA) and a Novelette. The beginning story in a new series The Good Shadows. Carol Alwood is a new author to me so I can’t make any comments on what this will be like. It looks like it’s worth a shot to me though.

Part of the synopsis on Amazon says…

He may be a mortician’s son, but that doesn’t mean he’s seen a ghost. Until one night…

Sixteen-year-old Owen Parker stays busy with his family’s business, playing basketball and keeping up his grades. But he’s never too busy for his friend and secret crush, Violet Blackstone. Lately, Violet is acting strange spending time with new friends, talking about going to parties, and blowing off plans to hang out. Owen forgives Violet for testing their friendship, but it still hurts.

Ghost of a Girl

I’m looking forward to checking out this book.

That’s it for free books today. It’s been a slow day for new material. Catch up time!

Currently I’m reading The Soldiers of Purple Heart Ranch book two.

Book one was The Corporal and the Choir Girl. Brandon is spending time at Purple Heart Ranch with his fellow Special Unit members, healing from a mission gone wrong. One of their four members disappeared in the unexpected blast. He is considered dead even though they can find no trace of his remains.

The three reach the ranch with a mission that’s two fold. Healing is one part but the painful part will be telling Reegan (gardener at the ranch) that her twin brother (the only remaining member of her family) is considered to be dead.

Afternoon church service surrounded by friends seems like the kindest place for her to hear the traumatic news. Brandon is captivated and filled with inner peace at the sound of the voice of an angel in the choir. Reegan’s voice silences the inner turmoil of guilt and flashbacks for the first time since the blast took his friend. He feels peace even though they have still have the telling ahead of them.

Reegan can’t accept their decree Reece is dead. She’s always had a sense of her brother’s presence and she can feel he’s still alive. Something’s wrong but he’s alive. She won’t accept the guilt Brandon feels either. Instead there’s this strong pull of inspiration to comfort him.

This collection is still a bargain today at $0.99. Grab a copy if you haven’t already.

Free Books from LPC books Oct 02, 2019

I’ve been anxiously checking and re-checking email all day and it’s finally here. The free books email from LPC (Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas) arrived this afternoon. I would be sad with only two new ones out of eight but with the massive free download yesterday… I’m good with it. The other six have been recently purchased, read, and mentioned. It’s nice to see them again, though, as they were no longer free for you at the time of my earlier mentions.

Devil in The Dust is mentioned in the Amazon synopsis as a story of hope. Historical Fiction

I spent my reading time today with one of yesterday’s free books. A Bridge Unbroken Cathy Bryant. It was so good. If you missed it yesterday it is still free today, grab a copy.

The only one I haven’t read is the last one, the Young Adult mystery. I think I did download book 1 of this series (this one is book 2) and started it but didn’t get it finished. It looked like it would be interesting for young people.

YA books for my grandsons

It was a lot of fun to come across a book store well stocked with young adult books suitable for boys. The boys in our family are becoming avid readers and I wanted to get a jump on Christmas and birthdays if I could. It’s often hard to find things geared to boys tastes in books when you have a deadline.

I haven’t read any of these books yet myself but my daughter gave the first series by Bryan Davis a 3 thumbs up when I checked to see if it had her approval. She probably checked reviews to form an opinion. The rest of the books were also suggested by a very helpful and well read young lady working in that part of the store.

I am excited about these great finds so I’ll just share them all with you now and comment later on to let you know what the boys thought of my selections.

If you have read and enjoyed any of these maybe you can jump into this conversation too and let us know what you think.

I was going to stock pile the new books for future gifts but changed my mind when I started thinking about the excitement level if their summer started out with many books to choose from, especially since they also have a book loving boy cousin visiting for a coupe of weeks soon. I think I might be as excited about this as they will be when they see the stack I have for them.

So, here is the first complete series in my collection… Children of the Bard

Song of the Ovulum bk 1  Song of Ovulum book 1 – Bryan Davis

From the Mouth of Elijah bk 2   Mouth of Elijah book 2

the Seventh Door bk 3   The Seventh Door book 3

Omega Dragon bk 4  Children of the Bard  – Omega Dragon book 4

Another Bryan Davis series is Dragons of Starlight

Starlighter Dragons of the Starlight series – Starlighter book 1 – Bryan Davis

There are 4 books in this series and I picked up the first one. The four are Starlighter, Warrior, Diviner, and Liberator.

Then there is a series by Wayne Thomas Batson that looks interesting. It’s called The Door Within Trilogy.

The Door Within bk 1The Door Within book1 – Wayne Thomas Batson

The Rise of the Wyrm Lord bk 2  The Rise of The Wyrm Lord book 2

The Final Storm bk 3  The Final Storm book 3

I did get the first three and see now that there is also a fourth one.

Another series by Wayne Thomas Batson is called The Dream Treaders Series.

Dream Treaders  Dream Treaders is book 1 and I bought that one as a starter, Search for the Shadow Key is book 2, and The War for the Waking World is book 3. Book one will be an experiment to see how we like it.

I picked up four random books just to see what they were like. We can go back for more if they are a hit with the boys.

Hood bk 1  Hood is book one in Stephen Lawhead’s The Raven King Series. Scarlet is book 2 and Tuck is book 3. This series was inspired by the legend of Robin Hood. I’ve read other books by Stephen Lawhead and enjoyed his fantasies. We’ll see what the boys have to say about this one.

We will also try out The White Lion Chronicles by Christopher Hopper.

Rise of The Dibor  Rise of the Dibor is book 1 in this series, books 2 and 3 are The Lion Vrie. and Athera’s  Dawn

The adults in the family haven’t been left out. I picked up four books for them too

Son of God (based on the major motion picture) by Roma Downey and Mark Burnett. I am not familiar with the movie or the authors but the young lady helping me thought highly of it.

The Prodigal – a Ragamuffin Story by Brennan Manning and Greg Garrett was also highly recommended. A modern telling of the parable.

The next two are by Joel C Rosenberg and are thrillers. The Third Target and The First Hostage. These fall into the what could happen category. They aren’t the books she originally recommended by this author but I an a sucker for a sale and thought it would be a safer way to try someone new to me.

If you have opinions on any of these books, you will have to share them with us, we would like to hear what you thought.

I will share more about the store itself  another time. They have a huge selection of new and gently used books and I hear they have an online presence selling books as well.

The store is called House of James in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada …. in case you want to check it out sooner rather than later. It took seconds to come up when I Goggled House of James, so happy hunting.

And happy reading too. Until next time.
