Free and bargain books June 11, 2021

This will be a featured-author post. 1531 Entertainment had a bargain suggestion for us this morning and in the search for it — three other FREE books showed up for this author. I’ve downloaded these books through the years and have read two of them. Unfortunately, I don’t remember much about them and will need a refresher. This author may need to be added to my favorites list.

First, today’s suggestion.

Standoff (Natchez Trace Park Rangers Book #1)

Amazon quote:

The Natchez Trace National Parkway stretches 444 miles from Nashville to Natchez, the oldest town on the Mississippi River. It’s the perfect road for a relaxed pleasure drive. Unfortunately for park ranger Luke Fereday, lately it’s being used to move drugs. Sent to Natchez to infiltrate the organization at the center of the drug ring, Luke arrives too late to a stakeout and discovers the body of his friend, park ranger John Danvers.

John’s daughter Brooke is determined to investigate her father’s murder, but things are more complicated than they first appear, and Brooke soon finds herself the target of a killer who will do anything to silence her. Luke will have his hands full keeping her safe. But who’s going to keep him safe when he realizes he’s falling–hard–for the daughter of the man he failed to save?

Award-winning author Patricia Bradley introduces you to a new series set in the sultry South that will have you wiping your brow and looking over your shoulder.

Now for the three more.

Shadows of the Past (Logan Point Book #1) (Read)

Amazon quote:

While she’s stalking the truth . . . someone is stalking her.

Psychology professor and criminal profiler Taylor Martin prides herself on being able to solve any crime, except the one she wants most desperately to solve–the disappearance of her father twenty years ago. When she finally has a lead on his whereabouts, Taylor returns home to Logan Point, Mississippi, to investigate. But as she works to uncover the truth, someone else will do almost anything to keep her from it.

Nick Sinclair pens mystery novels for a living, but the biggest mystery to him is how he can ever get over the death of his wife–a tragedy he believes he could have prevented. Now that his estranged brother is the only family he has left, Nick sets out to find him. But when he crosses paths with Taylor, all he seems to find is trouble.

Join the chase as Taylor and Nick search the murky shadows of the past for the keys to unlocking the present–and moving into a future they never imagined.

Justice Buried ( Book #2) (Read) (and remembered, now that I think about it)

Amazon quote:

In an effort to get her security consulting business off the ground, Kelsey Allen has been spending a lot of time up in the air, rappelling down buildings and climbing through windows to show business owners their vulnerabilities to thieves.

When she is hired to pose as a conservator at the Pink Palace Museum in order to test their security weaknesses after some artifacts go missing, she’s ecstatic. But when her investigative focus turns from theft to murder, Kelsey knows she’s out of her league–and possibly in the cross hairs. When blast-from-the-past Detective Brad Hollister is called in to investigate, Kelsey may find that he’s the biggest security threat yet . . . to her heart.

Crackling with romantic tension and laced with intrigue, this suspenseful story from award-winning author Patricia Bradley will keep readers guessing–and looking over their shoulders.

*********************

Justice Delayed ( Book #1) (not read)

Amazon quote:

It’s been eighteen years since TV crime reporter Andi Hollister’s sister was murdered. The confessed killer is behind bars, and the execution date is looming. But when a letter surfaces stating that the condemned killer didn’t actually do it, Detective Will Kincaide of the Memphis Cold Case Unit will stop at nothing to help Andi get to the bottom of it. After all, this case is personal: the person who confessed to the crime is Will’s cousin. They have less than a week to find the real killer before the wrong person is executed. But much can be accomplished in that week–including uncovering police corruption, running for your life, and falling in love.

With the perfect mixture of intrigue and nail-biting suspense, award-winning author Patricia Bradley invites her readers to crack the case–if they can–alongside the best Memphis has to offer.

There are more unexplored suggestions yet this morning. I’ll check them out and if they turn out to be interesting there will be another post.

One of the suggestions is from a longtime favorite author. I’m pretty sure…

There will be another post.

Enjoy!

Free and bargain books June 10, 2021

1531 Entertainment had a bargain suggestion for us today from one of our often seen authors.

Tidewater Inn (The Hope Beach Series Book 1)

Amazon quote:

“Old architecture, a missing woman, a sudden inheritance, and a great mystery with unexpected twists make this a hard-to-put-down book . . .” —Karen White, New York Times bestselling author

Welcome to Hope Beach. A place of intoxicating beauty . . . where trouble hits with the force of a hurricane.

Inheriting a beautiful old hotel on the Outer Banks could be a dream come true for Libby. The inn cries out for her restorer’s talent and love of history. She’s delighted to learn of the family she never knew she had. And the handsome Coast Guard lieutenant she’s met there on the island could definitely be the man of her dreams.

But Libby soon realizes that the only way she can afford the upkeep on the inn is to sell it to developers who are stalking the island. The father who willed her the inn has died before she could meet him, and her newfound brother and sister are convinced she’s there to steal their birthright. Worst of all, her best friend and business partner has been kidnapped before her eyes, and Libby’s under suspicion for the crime.

Libby’s dream come true is becoming a nightmare. Her only option is to find her friend and prove her innocence, or lose everything on the shores of Hope Island.

A nice surprise, a FREE book showed up for another favorite, often appearing, author. I have the first three books in this series, I think I’d better read them before I read this new one. I have read book one but it’s been awhile and I need a refresher.

Expired Game (Last Chance County Book 5)

Amazon quote:

She won’t stop working to bring down West and save the town.

He’ll never admit he might be the one standing in her way.

Officer Jessica Ridgeman wants to make detective. But her drive to bring down West runs deeper even than that. When the local crime lord fights back in repeated attempts to kill her, she knows she’s onto something.

Ted Cartwright is the PD tech guy. But what Last Chance’s finest don’t know can’t hinder their work to take down West. If he can keep his past a secret, they’ll never have to discover their trust in him is misplaced.

When Teds dark past teams up with West, Jess and Ted must reveal their closely held secrets and risk it all to survive. From the wilds of the mountains around town to the deepest part of the lake…the hunt is on.

But who is the prey?

***************************

I’m currently reading & enjoying a book that is still a bargain. I’m not sure what I was expecting from the look of the cover, but it wasn’t to like this book as much as I do. I haven’t read it in one sitting but I sure wanted to.

Cry in the Wilderness (Acts of Valor, Book 3)

-Present Day, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma–

Rachel LeMere is certain she’ll never love again. It’s taken three years to move past the tragic death of her husband and high-school sweetheart, Blake.

Rachel’s adoptive brother, a military lawyer, has managed to gain shared custody of her twelve-year-old son, Liam. Forced to live with her brother and endure his cruelty, Rachel promises her son they will escape to freedom and a new life. If only she can convince Blake’s best friend, Saul, to help them escape.

Legendary Navy SEAL Saul Wade is headed to Oklahoma to reclaim the ranch where he grew up. It’s bad enough Saul has to face his tragic past. Honor also demands he risk his entire career by helping a woman he scarcely knows.

What begins as a debt to a friend sets Saul on a journey of forgiveness, healing, and love. But when evil threatens his and Rachel’s burgeoning relationship, Saul is forced to make a life-changing decision—remain America’s top sniper or allow God’s grace to give him a whole new reason for living.

It has been a good day for books.

Now, I’m off to finish this current one so I’ll be ready for the next in line.

Happy Reading!

A little of this and that.

My mind is mush these days, too many distractions going on and it’s hard to think up something good to write. Hopefully, just starting will work for me one more time.

The first thing on my mind is a book I finished earlier today. It was an ok book but I only gave it 3 stars and I think I’m feeling a little guilty about that. It’s true, it was only worth that to me but I feel bad saying it out loud.

I’m pretty sure my assessment fell under the category of personal opinion rather than technical deficiencies.

I’m not a big fan of emotional struggles within the characters, with them spending most of their time on internal dialogue with themselves. Both main characters were caught up in their own issues and between them, all this thinking took up a major chunk of the story.

Did I mention I’m not a big fan of this writing technique? I prefer to see action of some sort moving the story along.

I don’t think there is a fix for the weakness in this case. It would take a rewrite with a different approach and in the end it would be a whole new book.

Like I say, I think my assessment was personal preference. I’m sure many could disagree with me and love the book.

**************************

I’ve spent the weekend diligently reading, trying to catch up a little with the growing backlog of unread books. This means I’m also accumulating a backlog of read books. I think I will add the covers here just to get them gone. Nothing stood out as special these last few days, that’s probably why I could motor through them so quickly.

Although, I did like Double Agent pretty well.

Double Agent: Faith in the Face of Crime (Love Inspired Suspense Book 1)

************************

Read and mostly enjoyed.

Well, I wasn’t planning on spending so much time with books on this post but it has been good to clean things up a bit.

And besides, if I’m honest, I’m listening to a live podcast while I’m doing this. Not exactly the best way to come up with an awesome post.

I’ll try a this & that post another day to see if I can’t do a better job of it.

In the meantime,

Happy Reading!

Free and bargain books June 05, 2021

Freestyle browsing is on the agenda today. The usual suggestion sources have let me down, again. Oh well, this way is fun and it’s a surprise to see who shows up.

I’ve downloaded at least nine from this first author. I’ve not read all of them yet but I have read and enjoyed the first book in this FREE four book collection.

Double Down – the complete series

Amazon quote:

It reaches the highest echelons of government.

Can this team expose the truth?

Can the team compile the evidence to expose this plot?

There was also a bargain book from the same author. The first few pages have me excited about reading the whole story. Maybe it will be my next read.

Double Agent: Faith in the Face of Crime (Love Inspired Suspense Book 1

I’m good for Christmas any ole time of the year. (Did I mentioned my tree is still up? Yup) (It’s a privacy screen – that’s my story and I’m sticking with it!) ( It’s cheerful, that works for me too!)

Anyway, this next read looks fun never-mind that it’s out of season.

Under the Mistletoe & Undercover Cowboy: Christmas Novella Box Set

Amazon quote:

In UNDER THE MISTLETOE, Madison Graham runs a Christmas store in the quaint town of Mistletoe, but dreams of moving to the big city.

When love comes in an unexpected package, will she be able to see what’s truly important? (A Christmas, contemporary romance novella)

In UNDERCOVER COWBOY Pinkerton detective Cole Ramsey has been hired to investigate a rancher suspected of sabotaging his neighbor’s property. But Cole’s investigation might be compromised when he falls for Abigail Covington, the rancher’s daughter.

An inspirational Christmas novella. (A Christmas, Historical romance novella)

Our day hasn’t turned out to be a hot as predicted, still it was warm enough anyway. Too hot to cook.

After the run I’m about to make for a hamburger with onion rings, I’ll settle down with one of these books and enjoy the warmth.

Free book May 29, 2021

BookRunes has a free suggestion for us today.

The Restoration (Sully Parkway Book 3)

Amazon quote:

He lives by the book—or his own version of it—and makes everyone miserable in the process.
Living to dish out discipline, Assistant Principal Michael Lansdowne receives a helping himself with only hours to choose his own consequences. Will he go back to middle school and teach seventh-grade math or off to elementary school as a substitute AP?

Despite his lack of affinity with children, the choice is a no-brainer for Michael. He’s an experienced assistant principal, after all. To Baird Elementary he goes.

Determined to survive in this alien environment, he attempts to restore his reputation, hoping as little of his secret as possible will surface. He meets his match in an officious principal, an inflexible first-grade teacher, and a praying wife. Can he manage to restore his broken relationships and quiet his guilty conscience?

The Restoration, Book Three in the Sully Parkway series, is best enjoyed after reading Books One and Two of the series, The Jesus Car and The Substitute.

******************************

It says we should read books one and two first to get the most out of this one but since book three is free I’m gong to take a chance. Besides, I looked at the other books and they don’t seem to be a continued story in the sense that the main character changes with each of them. I mean it probably is a continued story in a way… but I think I’ll manage.

*********

Currently, I’m back to reading a long book (I’m half way through- 300 more pages) that is futuristic but the power struggles of their world feel very reminiscent of today’s world. … nothing new under the sun rings very true right about now.

It doesn’t get much worse than the prospect of a three-way civil war, and in a global superpower grown arrogant and complacent in its prosperity, one influential man leads the peaceful charge against corruption and tyranny, while others plot more radical solutions.

Council Minister Merak Dorvallen’s allies are few, and now his youngest son Coren, a Lieutenant in the vaunted Irrianite military, is the target of government assassins. Desperate, Merak reaches out to Ohrim Sunvail, an old friend in exile who harbors potentially helpful secrets. Ohrim’s exceptionally competent and head-strong daughter Mei’ Shera accepts the assignment and thwarts the assassins, setting in accelerated motion events that will shape a drastically different future for Irrianon.

In the midst of the chaos, scientists in Irrianon have secretly cracked the code for interstellar space travel, which will shape a drastically different future for the entire planet of Toryl, especially when they find a sister planet of humans only a few years behind in technology. The winner of the Irrianite civil war will lay a solid first claim on the stars, unlocking a universe of possibilities for both progress and potential disaster.

In spite of a fair bit of time spent browsing and searching, one book was all I could come up with. Tomorrow.

Happy Reading y’all.

Checking in

Hey everyone,

I’m just checking in. I planned on posting everyday but it’s been sporadic lately. My mind has been focusing on other areas and without good book suggestions I’ve been coming up empty on things to talk about. Today is looking like that kind of day too. I figured a little something, anything, would be a good idea just in case I don’t get back here later.

The usual emails have no suggestions that interest me so that’s a bust. I’m almost finished the read I mentioned last night and haven’t looked to see what’s next. It isn’t a very long book and another hour or so should finish it but no time, I’m headed to work.

I have a big day planned. We will see if it works out. Fingers crossed. Usually when I plan a deep dive that’s the signal for emails to go crazy. Maybe I can fly under the radar for a while. That would be nice.

Tomorrow will be busy too. A painting company is coming to power wash fences, deck, and stucco in preparation for painting once it all dries out. Even if I don’t have to be involved just having them here will be a distraction. It will be great to have everything freshened up. This is the first time I’ve had this work done on this house. It turns out I should have been painting the wood every few years. Oops.

We won’t even talk about the yard. With all the rain and periods of hot weather the plants and weeds have gone crazy. My excuse for not getting out there is all the rain we’ve had. The soil is like clay and sticks to my boots in big clumps, an impossible mess.

The grass has just taken off and it’s fun to watch the birds in the back yard hunting for bugs. It’s like they are walking through shoulder high fields. The little birds are almost lost from sight in it. The guys are coming to mow today. I wonder if the birds will be sad.

If anything interesting shows up I’ll be sure to share it later.

Just to add a little color to the day, here is my current read.

It’s near the end, she’s figured out who killer is and she’s in his clutches. Will the authorities (her friends) find her in time? Of course they will, you don’t kill off the main character. Knowing that, the suspense is still great.

Have a good day, and Happy Reading!

Free and bargain books May 25, 2021

Finally I have a moment, and a few things to share.

BookRunes has a FREE suggestion for us that is intriguing. I know I use that word a lot but in this case it is probably truer than usual. I’ve only read the first chapter and the synopsis and I want to see where this story is going.

The Morning Light: never passes us

Amazon quote:

Poetic, engaging and original, The Morning Light is a charming story of discovering the ancient and shared voice within each of us.
A violin maker’s story of music, craftsmanship and the seeking of serenity set against homelessness, twists of fate and a never ending desire to reproduce the sweet and soulful sound of a grandfather’s violin, fine-tuned to play with a resonance that connects the heart.

************************

BookBub has a bargain suggestion for us. This is book 1 in a series. A year ago we were offered book 4 and I think if I remember right it was a good read.

A Match to Call Ours (Front Porch Promises Book 1)

Amazon quote:

Brittany Gorman needs a job, but nanny to six-year-old twin girls isn’t exactly what she’s looking for. Their single father, Parker Watson, isn’t sure hiring Brittany is the right move, but he’s desperate for help.

Soon Brittany is charming the twins and their father as well. But Parker still clings to the bitterness of his past, a past that has made him a recluse on his isolated Montana ranch, distanced him from God, and kept him from finding love.

Can Brittany’s prayers and two little matchmakers soften Parker’s heart and help him find love with his perfect Montana match?

************************

I’m currently reading a mystery/suspense novel. I’ve only just started and I’m anxious to get back to it.

Wow. Believe it when I say you need to hurry, these great bargains don’t last long. 4 days later and it’s lost the attractive price.

It has started off with a bang and is still a good read though.

Secrets and Suspense: A Clean Romantic Suspense (The Men of Fire Beach Book 4)

There’s trouble brewing in Fire Beach!

Cara Hunter owns the bed and breakfast in town, but before she came to Fire Beach, she was in the military. Strangely, no one seems to know exactly what she did when she was in the military, but when Bubba and Makenna find her unconscious on the floor, her past may finally get revealed.

Cole Davenport is a criminal investigator whose lead suspect is Cara Hunter, but when he meets her, he has a hard time believing she’s a killer. When he gets caught up in Cara’s past, will he be able to help her? Or will he lose his life in the process?

******************************

Actually I have two books going on right now, I needed a break.

The first book is sci-fi. It is long and has many battles with even more factions. I’m enjoying it and cheering for the good guys but need a cleansing of the palette to continue on.

No wonder it seems so long, I had forgotten it’s over 600 pages. 668 to be precise.

Patriot Star

It’s a good time to read right now at my house. The sky is a heavy gray and the wind has been ferocious off and on most of the day and night. The perfect time to curl up with a warm blanket and a hot cup of tea.

I’ve had a productive work time over the last few days and the resulting euphoria makes reading time even sweeter.

I hope you are enjoying it too.

Read and Enjoyed May 21, 2021

I’ve enjoyed this first one. I wasn’t sure I would at the beginning, somehow it wasn’t easy getting started. It could have been the fault of distraction. My second attempt was much better and it was a great read.

I think my favorite thing about this story was the empowering interaction between the main characters. So much love and wisdom. Lots of tense moments too where community members at large even had her back. They recognized strangers out to get her and they didn’t give an inch, even going so far as to send them on wild goose hunts.

Hummingbird by D Stearman

She feels like a misfit. Who is she? Where does she belong?

Is she Lexa, Alexandra, or someone else? Forced to commit a crime, she flees south of the Border—and a vindictive bounty hunter follows her.

Will she escape? Find redemption? Learn who she really is and where she belongs?

Her answers lie hidden in a tiny seaside village where wandering hummingbirds rest their wings.

*************************

Another one enjoyed. I prefer characters with depth and this story had them in spades. It’s more than a month since I read this and it is still a good memory for me.

One of the attractive things about these two books – the settings. Both of them exotic in their own way. Mexico and Ireland. Who doesn’t want to go to one or both of these places.

This one is still a bargain if you are interested.

Once Upon an Irish Summer (Once Upon a Summer).

You Can’t Embrace Your Future Until You Deal With Your Past…

Fiona Burke has long been obsessed with Ireland’s famed, sixteenth-century pirate queen, Grace O’Malley. Now that she’s on the final stretch of earning her PhD in history, all she needs to do is finish her dissertation—with Grace O’Malley as her subject—then return home to Boston to defend it. Once that’s done she can compete for a highly coveted history professor position.

Fiona arrives in western Ireland aiming to interview the locals and find additional folklore to flesh out her work. But when she encounters Grace’s distant relative—the handsome, commanding Rory O’Malley—she gets seriously distracted. Rory shares her passion for history and Ireland, and cares for his grandfather and great-uncle in a winsome way. Unfortunately he also carries wounds beyond his injured leg…wounds that threaten to dismantle every little bit of a relationship that he and Fiona begin to build.

As a famed TV host becomes intrigued with Fiona—as well as convinced she should do guest appearances on his show—Rory starts to figure out that he might be as interested in his own personal romantic future as he is in Ireland’s epic past. But can he take the steps toward the healing he needs before it’s too late? It all remains to be seen…Once Upon an Irish Summer.

****************************

This last one was a recent purchase, it’s part of a series I love following. I think, probably because of the writing. In a way the stories have a certain sameness about them and yet I don’t tire of reading them. Well, maybe a little tiring, but not enough to keep me from going back for more.

Beckett: a clean romantic suspense novel (Lantern Beach Blackout: The New Recruits Book 3)

My current read Patriot Star is science fiction. It reminds me a little of Star Trek, both the Next Generation and Voyageur I loved those shows. I’m enjoying this book too.

Happy Reading

on this dull but dry day (so far.)
