Free books October 24, 2019

It’s easy to pass up on chocolate… but it’s a struggle, for me, to pass up on books. All I needed was one or two to go with BookBub’s single enticing suggestion this morning. It was tough to leave without peeking through the rest of the free pages and the temptation to return to the site has been pestering me off and on all day. It’s a good thing I didn’t have time to go back, my TBR list is growing longer by the day.

So, there are eight books this time and I’ve read half of them. They were fun reads, for the most part, Murder in Mind looks like it could be a little scary. I hope the rest are OK, with no surprises. It always feels like I’m taking a big chance, not reading them first. Fingers crossed.

Free books for October 23, 2019

Exciting news, the email is here for LPC Books (Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas.) There is a tight timeline on these offers, they will only be available through the 25th so you will need to hurry.

Fall Flip is a recently published book. There was a pre-publish copy available from the author a number of weeks ago and this book is on my read (red) and enjoyed list. Several months ago if I remember correctly.

Fall Flip

Remnants, and its author Stan Poel, sounds familiar to me but I’m not finding it quickly in my lists so it will have to be read to solve the memory puzzle.

Remnants

Ann Tatlock shows up fairly often on my TBR list and I’m looking forward to A Room of My Own. A historical novel looking at the Great Depression (1930’s) through the eyes of a child.

A Room of My Own

In A Pirate’s Debt has been offered up in these emails more than once and it’s also a read-and-enjoyed book. If I remember right this was a fun read but not without peril and excitement.

In a Pirate's debt

Sticks and Stones is also a repeat offering so if you don’t have it yet, now’s your chance.

Sticks and Stones

This is a nice selection of books today… enjoy.

Mixed bag of Free books October 21, 2019

Free books this morning comes from a mixed bag of sources. BookBub, BookRunes, and Jennifer Youngblood, author.

Most of the books are written in a style that is, admittedly, not my favorite – lighter romance often involving the rich and the famous. They are well written so can’t be faulted on that level, personal preference is simply the issue here.

Three of the four authors – Jennifer Youngblood, Cami Checketts, and Melissa Storm – are prolific writers and they make good use of Kindle Unlimited. As shown below, a few of their books can be purchased $0.00 right now but I noticed many more can be found read-free on Kindle Unlimited. If you happen to be a subscriber this is good news. If you are interested search by authors name on Amazon and a large number of their books will come up for you.

I’m not sure is this rambling information is helpful at all but, hopefully…

Jenna is more my usual preference and I started reading it last night. It’s great so far.

Jenna

As for the others, The Hot Headed Patriot is one downloaded earlier in the year but the rest are new reads for me. I will check them all out, just in case, you never know when a story will make a connection. Wouldn’t that be a nice surprise. Hope springs eternal!

Happy Monday and Happy Reading!

Free books October 19, 2019

There was one FREE book this morning courtesy of BookRunes daily email. So I decided to cruise Amazon again today because it just seems wrong to quit at only one. I found three more that looked interesting. Several I’ve read before but only one of them is remembered, there will be a re-read in store for me on Texas Roads.

Timothy’s Home

Timothy's Home

I don’t recognize the author but the synopsis looks interesting for this historical novel and I’m looking forward to checking it out.

Hazardous Duty

hazardous duty

I’ve mentioned this book before but it’s free and a fun book so…. here it is again. Give it a try if you like fun mysteries.

A Hero to Keep

A Hero to Keep

This one is totally new to me, both the book and the author. It’s about family drama, someone in need of rescue, and a care-giver not used to asking for help. At least that’s what I gathered with a quick look. I plan to read it to see if I thought wrong.

Texas Roads

Texas Roads

It’s hard for me to find free books I haven’t had before. This one says 2013 for me. I’m sure I’ve read it but will read it again to be sure.

Looking forward to another interesting week-end line up of books. I hope you are too.

Happy Reading!

Free books October 14, 2019

Two FREE books caught my interest this morning.

The first one is courtesy of the BookRunes daily email.

Celtic Cross was in my downloads for 2015. If I remember right, I did like it and would have shared it if I was blogging back then. It should be a good read. Historical Fiction.

Celtic Cross

The second one is courtesy of the BookBub daily email.

Her Last First Kiss is new to me. Liz Isaacson does show up in my read list but not as often as some authors do. I can’t remember if I liked her style or not. Some write deeper than others and I prefer deeper, personally. I think Liz’s style may be in a lighter vein. We will have to read this and check it out to be sure.

Her Last First Kiss

I have been reading some of the novellas from yesterday and it’s served as a reminder as to why I prefer full length novels.

Summer of Dreams

Summer of Dreams is the first one to be checked out and I loved it. Every now and then a book comes along that lights-up-the-room and this book did that for me, in the beginning at least.

A successful novella will set an even pace from beginning to end. Difficult to do it seems. The common fault is time spent developing the story with a sprint to the end, before running out of pages. The sudden and hurried conclusion spoils whatever the book had going on for itself in the beginning.

That’s what happened here. The beginning of the book was awesome.

Novella format is great when the storyline doesn’t have much going for it and it would be a stretch to make it fit the Novel length. In my opinion, it’s a shame to waste a good idea on a Novella when a longer format could do it justice – leaving a satisfied reader.

The sneak peak at the sequel was disappointing too. It followed one of the other characters, ten years in the future. There was no resolving of the unfinished business in the first book.

Aside from the disappointing ending, it was well worth the read. The characters were great. I loved the way they think, and the resulting interactions between the three of them. Dry humor with audacious characters is the best.

Historical fiction.

One brilliant young woman with a military father disapproving of her engineering dreams.

A brilliant young man seeking an engineering education in the only avenue open to him, Officer Academy training.

The two are thrown together because the accumulation of his misconduct demerits has him facing expulsion and possible imprisonment. He must work to reduce that number to graduate in a few weeks. His reduction assignment is to build a working pump for a fountain in a ‘birdcage.’ That’s what her father called it when he requested military engineering help for his daughter.

Her colorful and resourceful cousin is part of the awesome threesome and between them, life is full of trouble.

Check out Summer of Dreams to see what you think.

Happy Reading!

Free Books October 13, 2019

Awesome results this morning…. searching Amazon for free books. I have to admit, it took great restraint to cut off downloads after only twelve.

Many of them are novellas this time, 150ish pages or so. Normally I go for full length novels but shorter is fun sometimes.

All but three of these are new to me, both the book and the author, so I can’t guarantee what they are like. I did try to be selective in this search, though, so hopefully most are worth the read. They looked enticing enough for me to take a chance anyway. Three, I’ve downloaded before (2013 – 2016) but don’t remember much so I’ll revisit them as well.

A snow storm, and books read

Not much productive happening here today. The weather has been distracting.

It started last night around supper time and delivered a four hour power outage right off the bat. A Colorado-low weather system landed in southern Manitoba yesterday, determined to stay for the weekend.

This is how it started late afternoon yesterday. The fallen leaves will be covered soon.

A Winter wonderland in the front yard this morning.

Front yard 20191011_092725

We’ve had snow, freezing rain, bursts of gale force wind, more snow/rain, and then this morning – thunder and lightening.  I thought someone in the neighborhood was trying to start a stubborn snow blower until flashes of lightning caught my attention. Sure enough, it was thunder. Highly unusual in winter around here. Just plain snow is unusual this early in October. Life is never boring around here. We do have some awesome storms.

They didn’t have to tell me twice to stay home unless necessary.

The power outage meant Colleen Coble Collection had to be enjoyed by candlelight last night. A real hardship.

It turned out all four books were romantic mystery/thriller. Maybe the candlelight helped soften the tense mood a little.

The rest of these books were enjoyed awhile ago, I’m playing catch up. They were all very good.

It looks like I’d best hurry up and hit publish, the lights are flickering.

The thermos is filled with hot water for tea, the candles are in place, and the kindle is fully charged. I’m ready.

Happy reading. Stay warm.

Fall Flip, and other great books recently read. Mostly Romance.

All of these books have depth to them, even if they do fall under the Romance banner.

House Without Lies is probably my favorite.  Lily has a heart for abused girls in desperate straits. From a little girl she dreamed of a big house with many children. It’s coming true. Every holiday another girl, or two, is added to her household (her very small college student household.) Not only are they hiding from abusers – they are hiding from nosy neighbors, landlords, authorities who could make the girls go back home to more danger and, her rich parents who disapprove of her life choices.

Pavel works in a small grocery store where he decides; rather than throw out-of-date food in the garbage, he will save it for his friend Lily. He also decides; she needs to meet his cousin Mario who happens to work alongside Children Services, in an private teen rescue facility.

Not only is Mario distractingly handsome, he has connections, and a determination to help Lily and her girls – like it or not. The girls love him and they gladly accept whatever  he is offering, like time and food, especially food. His resources are going to be severely stretched, attempting to legally protect the teens from discovery by their abusers.

But, there is hope. Always hope.

Harvey Girls, and their amazing careers

I went searching Amazon books this morning and found an interesting box set. Harvey House Complete Series Books 1 – 12. It’s priced at $1.32 with 1345 pages and that is a good deal. Especially if the subject of Harvey House is new to you, it’s an easy way to get them all at once.

Harvey house boxed set 1 to 21

Through the years, I’ve happily read some of the books in this series and still remember the impact of these amazing pioneering stories. Each unique book is set in a different city of the vast Harvey House empire.

Fred Harvey had a vision to improve the travelling experience at a time when it was still very primitive and in some cases, appalling. He wanted consistency of experience from city to city, healthy/appealing food served in a timely fashion, with courteous and respectful service. It started out with his restaurants connected to railway stations. As things grew and demand became apparent, his vision enlarged to add luxury hotels in the same locations.

He was inspired to take the unheard of step of hiring young ladies after having to deal with fights and brawls involving his male staff. Hiring women proved to be a successful solution with far less drama.

At the time it was socially unacceptable for young women to take on such roles. He defied societies opinions and it became a liberating experience for women at a time when they had no rights of their own. Any property or wages they might own became the possession of their husbands and other male relatives.

Many women went on to establish previously unheard of careers. Fred Harvey’s attention to detail and excellence, provided an enviable resume and his girls were highly respected.

My journey this morning with the Harvey House series actually started with the discovery of Harvey House  A Love So Legendary  Ellen Anderson with Katie Wyatt.

And it’s free today,

Harvey House book 1

I wasn’t sure, I was thinking this was book 1 –  the first story. I started reading, and it turns out, it tells the history of Fred Harvey and how it all began for him.

It’s an incredible story of opening up the country in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The resulting safe opportunities for women provided the chance for them to be viewed by society as valuable and capable human beings. His impact on the status of women is immeasurable. His impact on the service industry, revolutionary.

And then, one more free book discovered this morning. On the lighter side I think, maybe.

At Your Request

At Your Request – Jen Turano …. Historical Romance.

I’ve read and enjoyed this author before and I’m looking forward to reading this novella. It’s about a young woman’s tenuous connection to high society relationships despite the change in her social status due to the loss of family wealth.

A Woman of Fortune

No free books to report this afternoon. Nothing is appealing to me again, with these new emails but tomorrow is another day. In the meantime, I do have another list of interesting books-read to share with you.

This first one A Woman of Fortune is my favorite.

A Woman of Fortune A Woman of Fortune – Kellie Coates Gilbert … A beautiful Texas socialite is living the privileged dream life when it all comes crashing down. Her beloved, charming, obscenely wealthy, investment broker husband is being arrested by the FBI in the middle of their most prestigious social event of the year.  Unbelievable.

She cannot accept that he’s capable of their accusations.

It is true. He admits it. His empire is built on fraud and lies, cheating his clients out of billions.

He will spend many quiet years in prison while she’s forced to pay a hefty price — losing everything. House, money, reputation, the support of a husband and father of her children.

This well written story drew me in. It is unpredictable, raw, and it’s my favorite book in this list. I love the unexpected way it turned out.

pieces of Silver A World War 1 novel –  Pieces of Silver book 1 – Maureen Lang … Set during the turbulence of 1917 as America is swept into the Great War, this is a tale of faith, betrayal and unexpected love. (quote from Amazon)

Above the Fog  Appalachian Fiction – Above the Fog – Karen Lynn Nolan … It’s her thirteenth birthday tomorrow and her abusive father promises to be home to make a woman out of her. Desperate to flee, the sudden flood washing their village away forces her mother and frail grandmother to run with her.

She can’t help the furtive looks over her shoulder as they run, expecting him to appear out of the mist at any moment.

Mismatched   The Agency Files – Mismatched book 2 – Chautona Havig …. Organized crime. Illegal drugs. Violence. With them comes acceptance, order, purpose–danger. (quote from Amazon)

A Cowboys Reunion The Family Ties Series – A Cowboys Reunion book 1 – Carolyne Aarsen …. A former cowboy returns to the site of heartbreak and betrayal – his family’s ranch. (quote from Amazon)

Heart of Gold   Heart of Gold – Serafina Lyndon … After the death of her troubled mother, Sienna Hart returns to her small, coastal hometown of Ruby Bay to help her estranged sisters with the estate. (quote from Amazon)

I did enjoy all of these books but I still liked the first one best.

It seems most of them are available free if you subscribe to KindleUnlimited. That’s a bit of good news at least.

Happy Reading!
