The Duke’s Refuge (The Leeward Island Series Book 1)

The Duke's Refuge

However, on the day she’s convinced the earl will propose, Georgia is shipped off to the Leeward Islands to care for her ailing father. But when she arrives on Nevis, the last thing she expects is to learn that her abrupt departure was not at her father’s bidding but that of the infuriating, yet captivating, island schoolmaster. And now her plans may well be shipwrecked.

Harrison Wells is haunted by the memories of his deceased wife and hunted by the subsequent women who aspire to be the next Duchess of Linton. Desiring anonymity, he finds sanctuary in the Leeward island of Nevis. He’s willing to sacrifice his ducal title for a schoolmaster’s life and the solace the island provides. That is, until the school counselor decides Faith would be the best person to show around new student, and fellow senior, Colman Nightingale. So many things don’t make sense about this. Why would the counselor want a self-proclaimed loner to be the new kid’s introduction to not only the layout of the school, but the social aspect of it? What is this guy doing transferring so close to graduation? How does that even work?

Despite trying her darndest to put him off, Cole insists on becoming her friend. Just when Faith decides that it might not be so bad to have a friend, he goes and makes up some grand story about her being the daughter of a fae lord. Yeah right.

My brother called today to check up on me and we got to reminiscing about the hard times cycling in and out of the (many) decades of our life. Hard places that affected everyone, not just us personally. One thing is true about every single hard place we as a country, and even the world, faced – it passed, as a collective we lived through it. Health crisis and financial low places did not last forever. Wars that seemed hopeless, ended.

Somehow I feel very encouraged about this pandemic situation. Good things are going to come out of it. We will learn to do business and life in new and better ways. We’ll be reminded of what is truly important. Our priorities will change and life will be richer for it. Our relationships will become stronger, if we are open to it happening.

Today, Sars and Ebola are distant specks in our rear-view mirrors. One day, in the not too distant future covid-19 will be the same and life will be good again. Remember…just a speck, soon. Months, not weeks, but soon.

There are many things we could do to entertain ourselves hunkered down in proverbial storm cellars. Books are at the top of the my list and I think we need more. It looks like someone else had the same idea because there were more than usual to choose from. Check these out.

*********

All in all it’s not a bad day for new books.

There have been quite a few new books lately and some of them have turned out to be excellent reads. Others, not so much. There haven’t been any that were awful. Mostly they were just OK. I can’t really put the time into OK so if I want to know the ending I skip whole chapters and if that’s not enough, I’ll head right to the end. The two most prevalent reasons for disengagement – content that should have been cut and telling rather than showing. It’s not really a matter of personal preference, it’s a matter of what works. I’m a pretty easy sell for a well written book.

I’m a reader not a writer, but I like to learn and grab hold of any opportunities that come my way. This week Jerry Jenkins (check out his website if you are unfamiliar with his name) offered a free webinar giving seven tips on how to publish a book everyone will want to read. It was excellent content and I’m glad I listened in. He is currently inviting new gild members for his masterclass writing courses and mentorship program. If I were a writer I’d sign up. Check it out if you think it could be helpful.

The other person I follow is a blogger on WordPress, Jane Friedman. Her credentials are impressive and she features highly qualified contributors as guest bloggers on her site. I found today’s guest post, March 25, to be worth sharing far and wide. The discussion was Peer Critique vs Professional Editing. Very helpful. As a reader, I like to promote material like this in my quest to see good writers become better writers. Selfish motivation, I know.

So, back to books and reading….

Happy Reading on this fine sunny day.

Free and bargain books March 23, 2020

This whole social distancing thing surrounding the corona virus issue is turning out better than some of us thought it would. In so many ways. Checking in with some of my friends, they seem to be just as busy as they were before. It looks different these days but they’re not having to search for things to do.

Kids are a different story, it’s a little harder for them to find things to do sometimes. An active imagination helps though and I’ve noticed my grandsons have a knack for making good use of their’s. My daughter shared a picture of her boys intently playing with a small patch of ice in a snowbank on the side of their street. It wasn’t clear what scenario they were visualizing but it was working for them.

This weekend the new reality of universal self isolating impacted my normal hermit lifestyle in an unexpectedly negative way. Not that I’m complaining or anything. It’s the sudden explosion in live-streaming.  Everyone is jumping on board, singers, bloggers, church services, pretty much anyone and everyone. It took all my time just to keep up with some of the interesting new offerings out there this weekend. So much fun.

The flow of new book suggestions has been a little slow anyway so the lack of new posts is all good. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

So, back to awesome book suggestions:

1531 Entertainment has a FREE suggestion I’ve not seen before.

Den knows his girl. Something is wrong. And now he’s in a frantic race to find the abducted girls before they’re dropped into the darkness of the underworld.

Free and bargain books March 16, 2020

The pickings are slim today. It’s not like there’s a shortage of books to choose from, there’s just a shortage of something to catch my interest. In my mind though, one or two is better than none so it’s still a good day.

BookRunes has a FREE suggestion for us, a story with depth – something that always catches my interest. It appears I have downloaded a story from this author once before but haven’t read the book. Today is a good reminder I must do that.

Broken: Macy’s Story

Broken Macy's Story

Amazon quote:

Macy’s past won’t let her forget.

Macy Elmsworth has found herself in a mess. The 18 year old pastor’s daughter got in trouble with the law, nearly died, and in the process, damaged her relationship with her family. She now needs to fulfill community service hours. As a last resort, she moves in with her grandparents, where they need a housekeeper at the small motel they own.

********

I’m currently reading Outbreak by Davis Bunn. I’ve tried starting several other books but found it difficult to stick with any of them. I’m not having that problem with this thriller. It’s still a bargain at $1.99 if you’ve not already downloaded it.

Outbreak

The waters off the West African coast are a menacing red, full of algae thick enough to stand on in places. In nearby villages, mysterious deaths start to occur–and the panic mounts. But before an alarm can be sounded, the sea currents shift, the algae vanishes, and the deaths stop. Everyone is relieved when things return to normal, and local government officials are happy to sweep the publicity nightmare under a rug.

*********

Today seems to be an off day for finding interesting books so I’m giving up the search. Tomorrow is new day. Maybe 24 hours will make the difference and the hunt will prove more successful. Although, if you’re like me, it’s not like we really need more books at the moment anyway.

In the meantime, Happy Reading!

BookRunes has a FREE suggestion today. Another new (to me) author. I love to cross paths for the first time with some of the great writers popping up everywhere.

A Time for Every Matter: A Christian Romantic Suspense Novel (An Offer of Grace Book 2)

A Time for Every Matter

Amazon quote:

Seven years ago, Madeline Pine went mad. At least it seemed that way. She traded in her fast-paced New York City lifestyle for a quiet small town existence. On the upside, she now has faith and a sense of purpose.

Yet her tranquil world is upended when her nephew witnesses a murder, and she is faced with the challenge of keeping him safe. Compelling and enigmatic business mogul, Hiram MacArthur offers to assist her, but their growing attraction makes him more distracting than helpful.

*********

Chloe Flanagan also has a new book releasing soon, it’s available for $1.33 on pre-order. It is book seven in the Potter’s House Series, a series written with multiple authors and I’ve  ordered this one too. Just to see what these books are all about.

Changed Somehow: (Potter’s House (Two) Book 7) (The Potter’s House Books Series 2)

Changed Somehow

Amazon quote:

New York City actress, Natalie Rivers is a taker. She found out years ago that she has to look out for herself because no one else will. But when she loses a coveted role and her home in the same day, she is forced to take a painful look at her life and attitude. She struggles through her crisis alone, until her path collides with an eccentric pair of friends who show her the unexpected beauty of caring for others.

In the midst of finding love and a sense of purpose, Natalie’s perspective is changing. But when the heartbreak and mistakes of her past catch up with her, she will have to answer an important question: is new life possible or is she simply playing a part?

*********

I’m currently reading When You Come Home but I’m not sure If I’ll get through much of it. It’s time for a change of pace, I think. Maybe laundry and a few dishes will be helpful.

When You Come Home

Things always look better after a good nights sleep. Tomorrow is another day and books will be calling my name again, I’m pretty sure.

In any event, there will be lots of reading time in the days and weeks ahead. The coronavirus has finally showed up in Manitoba and we are all being encouraged to stay home, avoiding close contact with other people. I’m glad this scare is taken seriously and these measures are being encouraged to prevent the virus spreading far and wide.

I didn’t join the current panic and storm the grocery store to load up on food and toilet paper though. I’m so glad I didn’t. Not that I need much anyway, and my TP supply is already robust. I hear it was crazy out there. I figure I’ll wait til Monday when the next freight trucks are scheduled, to renew my supply of milk and apples.  By then the rush should be over  and maybe I’ll have the store all to myself. Unless a few others have the same bright idea.

Oh, and I mustn’t forget, I need a replacement bag of chocolate chips and some furnace filters. It may even be a good time to get the oil change and tire rotation the dealership keeps reminding me about. A quiet day in the hood.

In the meantime, stay safe and….

Happy Reading!
