BookBub has a couple of  interesting suggestions for us today. The first one is a historical novel with a point of view I’ve not seen much of. It’s refreshing to learn something new. A bargain at $0.99

Currently I’m reading a book with an unusual twist. I’m not exactly sure where it’s going but that’s not a bad thing. Doling out information a little at a time adds intrigue to the story.

Happy Reading …

from a happy camper. That’s me. The prediction for today was HOT and I was scurrying around getting things done before it hit.

It’s a win/win. The tasks are done and the heat hasn’t materialized.

It’s grey and windy and looks like a storm could hit anyway.

I was worried about my newly planted flowering tree. The wind is often wild around here, whipping things around like crazy. The young tree didn’t stand much chance in the last storm and was leaning over before the protective staking could be installed.

I was on a mission this morning, looking for information and a source of supplies to take care of my tree. Information was great but finding the needed stake was a little bit of chaos. It was the blind leading the blind. I don’t think the young guy serving me knew anymore than I did when it came time to find the stake in the back lot of the lumber yard.

I was expecting wood but ended up with metal. It turned out alright. It’s green and fits with the tree just fine. The next challenge was pounding the two of them into the ground. The stake is 6 ft high and I’m not. My neighbor bailed me out and did the honors. Piece of cake for him.

Now I can watch and worry it’s tied too tight.  Maybe it will break off if gale force winds come whipping through.

This is like being a new mom full of insecurities. I worry too much.

I’m going back to my original thought. It’s been a good day. And my tree looks good standing straighter.

… from a distracted blogger.

I left my computer needing to refresh my memory on the title of my current read.  The intention was to grab my Kindle and return to the blog. I’m not sure how it happened but I noticed a spill on the kitchen floor that I just had to investigate and clean up. My stomach growled and I remembered my plan for a dish of ice-cream. I cannot eat ice-cream without reading, of course. A few chapters later my thoughts turned to the plants in the living room needing water. I’d best do it now before I turn in for the night, not leave it again for another day.

Walking past the computer – Oh no. I was in the middle of a blog post.

I have now refreshed my memory on the current read, finished the blog post (almost) and will water the plants before turning out the lights. Unless I forget and read a few more chapters first. It’s been known to happen.

Well, it was quite a day for my car (I mentioned this morning’s 8 a.m. appointment yesterday) I’m sure all the poking and prodding was a shock to his system. (My car is not delicate and fragile, it’s heavy, strong, and able to take on challenges, I’m sure it’s a he.)

(At least I haven’t named him, yet.)

Not only did he have to live through an oil change and all that entails, there was more, all first time experiences. A transmission service, rear differential service, transfer case service, and a flush of the brake system.  Sounds like a shocking experience to me.

I haven’t decided if I should be happy or sad that life has had reason to acquaint me with many of the important moving parts on a car. For today I’ll feel happy. At least I knew what they were talking about when they listed all the things that needed to happen at this mileage.

On the bright side it took 8 years to get to this point. Not too shabby. Best of all though, there shouldn’t be any time spent sitting on the side of the road. Been there done that.

We’ll leave those stories for another day while I bask in today’s happy feelings. Life is good.

My current read is dragging. I want to see how it ends but it is a little painful getting there.

Lost Down Deep

I think next I’ll try a book that seems a little weird with my first taste of it. I’ll give it a try and send it packing if it doesn’t work out for me. The collection of books barely started and not pursued is growing and needs weeding out again. I do hope this one turns into a good read though. I’ll let you know what happens.

How is the weather at your house today?

It’s 27C here at the moment with an expected high of 31C feels like 40C with the humidity. It was warm yesterday too.

It was quite windy last evening, enticing me to sit outside and cool off a little. It felt like it could be the edge of a storm, turned out it was. We heard this morning a major storm hit further west of us. There was heavy flooding with torrential rainfall. Power outages due to wind damage. The destruction looks like a tornado hit but that’s not been confirmed yet. With so many roads washed out it’s slow-going to restore power.

Life is never boring around here when it comes to weather.

I plan to lay low again today. I know it’s shocking but I’m needing a break from reading. Maybe I’ll break out the new jig-saw from Christmas. I love jig-saws.

It will end up being both. No question.

I’m still reading the collection from yesterday. By now I’m on book 4. The characters in books 3 and 4 are similar in temperament. The story details are different but the strong willed, take-no-prisoners attitude is the same. The sameness hasn’t prompted me to move on to something else just yet. One more book after this one. I think this is still at bargain price too. There is a lot of shooting and tense life threatening moments in this series.

It doesn’t look like much at first glance but there are seven books in this list. Not too shabby after all.

Currently I’m reading book 2 in the series mentioned yesterday. There was a lot of skimming happening in book 1 even though I enjoyed the story. Book 2 is much different. I haven’t been tempted to skim a single page let alone a paragraph. There are no similarities in the stories, which is wonderful, although the main characters are brothers and there is the family connection. The cover makes you think cowboy, the story doesn’t. It feels military actually. It’s still a bargain if you are tempted to read along, to see if you agree with my assessment.

Yesterday I mentioned I was reading a second book based on the story of King Solomon of Biblical fame. It turned out, for me, the first book (I AM My Beloved by Caryl McAdoo) was the better rendering of the story. It flowed beautifully and was most believable. Caryl seemed to have the clearer understanding of customs of the times, very important to a believable story.
