Bargain books August 22, 2021

BookBub has a bargain suggestion for us. I’ve not read this author and haven’t checked out this book beyond a few pages to determine if he can write. It seems he can and from the little I’ve seen so far, I want to read this book.

Dead Man’s Journey (The Unseen Series Book 1)

Amazon quote:

A dangerous invention.
An invisible realm.
One man’s deadly search for answers begins.

When Aaron Fitzpatrick is called away from his army base in northern Australia, he is told that his father’s body has been found, missing one finger and far away from his usual jogging route.

Confused and sceptical, Aaron can’t help but suspect foul play when he learns his dad’s death isn’t the only local oddity. Several of Brisbane’s homeless have seemingly vanished from the earth, only to be returned after a wildly unsettling experience…

As Aaron investigates his father’s death, all signs point to a sinister device that is manipulating the boundaries between the earthly and spiritual realms.

When Aaron’s childhood sweetheart becomes an unwitting victim of the deadly scheme, he has just one chance to save the girl he loves from a madman with unimaginable power.

Could a reverend with the key to resurrection be the saviour of Aaron’s rescue mission? Or is he destined to lose all those he holds dear?

Dead Man’s Journey (The Unseen Series #1) is a thrilling and adventurous piece of Christian speculative fiction that asks the big questions, while delivering a stellar plot and a memorable cast of characters.

Interesting.

I had been participating in a fellow bloggers weekly story prompt for quite some time but was on an extended break. With no clear plans to rejoin. This week I took the bait and wrote a piece, on Friday. It’s not been posted yet but will be in a few hours. Judging by the opening paragraphs, it seems this book fits with today’s story prompt.

Interesting.

Read and enjoyed – Vestige of Courage & Grave Consequences

Two books. Enjoyed for the same reason.

Different genres with each covering different time periods. Past and present. There were many similarities with these books but there was one major difference.

There was one shared effect that I found intriguing. There are huge differences in the culture of the times and both authors highlighted the differences in interesting ways. By the end I think we had gained an appreciation for the lives our ancestors had to live.

Most of us cannot imagine living without our modern conveniences. On the other hand, if all you’ve ever known is the old style way of life, a sudden exposure to modern life would be traumatic. I think Vestige of Courage did a very good job of making that point. The time travelling character was about undone with some of her first time experiences with modern technology. It was eye opening to see our electronic life from her perspective.

I’ve often thought about that very thing. My grandmother died in 1976 before electronics started taking off. I’ve often thought about what her reaction would look like if she could suddenly come back now in 2021, with all the advances that have been made. Her mind would be blown. Imagine what it would be like for someone from the 1870s, still dependent on a very primitive way of life. Incomprehensible. It’s kind of cool when I think about it. I think the reader will be left with a new appreciation and a new perspective.

Anyway I thoroughly enjoyed both books.

In this first one a young lady from 1879 is suddenly thrust into the year 2019

Vestige of Courage: A Christian Time Travel Romance (Vestige in Time Book 4)

Finding herself in the future is Beatrice’s wildest dream come true, until it shatters her long-held illusions.

Beatrice Thomas lives a simple life on an isolated mountain homestead in 1879, Colorado, but she longs to experience the world past the rugged peaks and lonely months that her life has become. Unfortunately for her, that requires a miracle.

Chase Bennett’s life is on hold while he searches for his missing brother. When he stumbles upon a woman who’s looking for answers of her own, she provides a distraction he doesn’t need.

As their friendship grows, Beatrice is bewildered by the fast pace of the modern world. The adventure she longed for may be more than she can handle.

Torn between the past and the promise of a better future, can Beatrice and Chase move forward and grasp the vestige of courage buried deep within?

******************************

This next one is a mystery. A killer needs to be discovered and while everyone in the story is living in the present the clues are all rooted in the past. And, some of those living in the present have found themselves stuck in the past. Too many secrets were tying them there.

Grave Consequences

Sometimes finding the living is more difficult than searching for the dead.

In 1968, twenty-six-year-old Charlotte Graves wrestles with more than just her decision to return to her hometown, Loblolly, Alabama—she is also fleeing a broken heart, colliding headlong into a second one, and about to stumble onto a deadly secret.

Now settled back in Loblolly, Charlotte is hired to oversee the Woodville County Historical Society, a job she was born for. But no sooner has she banged the gavel to bring order to the first meeting than she is accused of being incompetent to lead the group by her old nemesis, Boopsie Sweets. Later that night, she finds herself arrested by her old beau, the current deputy sheriff, Roan Steele, for killing Boopsie.

After being released on bail, Charlotte uses her skills as a genealogist to leap into the investigation. And when Charlotte goes digging up dirt, she unearths a long-kept family secret. Will it lead to Boopsie’s murderer … or to grave consequences for Charlotte and her family?

I loved the resourceful characters in these books too.

I would definitely read both of them a second time.

Happy Reading

It’s raining, it’s pouring, the old lady is not snoring.

She can’t snore, the rain is making way too much noise.

Crazy weather.

Yesterday was tank top, shorts, and sandals.

Today is t-shirt, heavy fleece jacket, jeans, and socks with slippers.

I took a video, the rain was so impressive. Only a half hour and the yard is flooding and I needed proof. It turns out, the video plays sideways and I have no idea what I did to cause that. It also turns out I have the shakes worse than I realized. No idea idea about the why for that either. I have not yet started drinking! lol

This isn’t NBC, as one of my favorite podcasters always says, so I will go ahead and post it here anyway.

Well, I guess maybe not. WordPress isn’t recognizing it for a reason I have not yet discovered but must explore.

I’ll share a picture instead. No I won’t, it looks like I figured something out. The video is uploading.

My flooding backyard/hear the rain

Not too bad for a first ever attempt at uploading a video on here.

You can’t tell from this angle but the flowerbed below the railing is flooded. The drainage trough at the back under the trees is flooded too. After an hour or so of pounding rain it has changed to a gentle rain. By the looks of it I won’t be watering the flower beds for a few days.

My lawn is a lovely green even after all the hot weather we’ve had. All because of mulching. This is the first year the summer lawn clippings have not been picked up and it looks better than it ever has in the eight years I’ve been here.

The weather guys promised the threat of a thunder storm for today. If a really good one comes through later today I’ll try another video. After the heavy rain that already passed through, though, I’m not holding my breath for an awesome storm.

Today has been a nothing new-books day so I’m grateful for the wild storm showing up to give me a little post material!

Some of the recently ordered new releases arrived in today’s Kindle mailbox so it’s been a good day afterall.

A good day to you too. I hope you ordered some of those new books.

Happy Reading

Although fiction, Deep End of the Lake, is written from the authors’ personal compassion for families who have the privilege and responsibility to care for a child with a disability. There seems to be a nice variety in story treatments and I’m looking forward to checking these out.

I’ve also found more interesting bargains but I’ll save them for another post.

Happy Reading!

Read and enjoyed August 17, 2021

I loved this story. For a number of reasons.

I’ll admit I was uncertain at first as I tried to read the first chapter. Watching hulking men storm the beautiful house brandishing weapons in a uncivilized manner was disconcerting. Reading on was looking highly unlikely.

Fortunately, as I read on a little further and other characters were introduced, the story began looking more and more appealing.

There were so many interesting aspects added as the story unfolded. The nationality, culture, and customs of the “invading army” lent a flavor to the story different from what we are used to. The complex family, residents of the house, were definitely not the norm. Each family had deep secrets which added stress to the precarious legal situation.

And, just when I thought I had something figured out there was another twist to the story.

In the end my only complaint was the first chapter and the last page. For the same reason. They were both awkward and dissatisfying.

Aside from that though, it was a great read, one I would gladly do all over again.

The hulking warriors were definitely becoming more civilized as trust grew. A point in their favor. Really, they were just being as protective as an angry mama bear. It was beautiful to see… unless their anger was being directed at you.

The Rose of Winslow Street

Romance and Drama to Capture the Heart in This Emotional Tale

The last thing Libby Sawyer and her father expected upon their return from their summer home was to find strangers inhabiting a house that had been in their family for decades. Widower Michael Dobrescu brought his family from Romania to the town of Colden, Massachusetts with a singular purpose: to claim the house willed to him long ago. Since neither party has any intention of giving up their claim, a fierce legal battle ensues between the two families.

When important documents go missing from the house, Libby suspects Michael is the culprit. Determined to discover the truth behind the stolen papers, Libby investigates, only to find more layers of mystery surrounding Michael and his family. Despite their rivalry, Libby finds herself developing feelings for this man with the mysterious past.

As a decision about the house looms in the courts, Libby must weigh the risks of choosing to remain loyal to her family or give her heart to a man whose intentions and affections are less than certain.

***************************

Currently, I’ve started a book that has captured my attention. I’m only on chapter two but still, it should be good all the way through. It’s at a low bargain price too.

This is about a race car driver who crashed and burned, literally. Only he wasn’t on the track, and it may not be an accident.

He’s also inherited a baby but we don’t know yet how that all came about. He’s hired a high school friend, turned private investigator, to figure out what happened. He also wants her to find the baby’s mother.

Show Me Best Friends: Small-Town Single-Father Cowboy Romance (Cowboy Crossing Romances Book 4)

Amazon quote:

A “steel cowboy” with a wounded spirit, an ex-cop who’s never forgotten him, and a baby in need of love… Can these childhood best friends become more? A sweet, clean, wholesome romance with a happily-ever-after!

When he starts caring for his buddy’s baby, Maverick turns for help to his childhood friend whom he’d had a crush on, Vera. Soon he wants more than friendship. But what does he have to offer her now?

At thirty-seven, jobless, husbandless, and childless, Vera Tsareva feels like she took a wrong turn somewhere. But once the road takes her back to her hometown to help her grandmother, she begins working with Maverick, the guy she’s tried to forget for many years. They even go on a trip to the other side of the world together, but he’s closed off his heart to her.

************************

It has been a warm one today and judging by the orange moon we are still bothered by smoke from nearby forest fires. When I say nearby, they are in the same province but miles away.

My son and his family live in the province of British Columbia, Canada. Yesterday they were driving home from holidays and the mountain highway (Coquihalla) had fire burning on both sides of the road. We were shocked it was still open when they went through.

(we affectionately call it The Coke)

When it is not burning this is an amazingly beautiful drive.

I’m sharing this for the pictures. I love this trip and I’ve driven it many times with some great memories. It’s about 2 hours long. Someone should film the whole highway then we could travel it vicariously. A friend in Norway send me a video like that once, it was a train trip. Norway has high mountains too. Watching something in real time seems like it would be boring but they did a good job with their camera work and it was enjoyable.

Anyway, enjoy the scenery.

And the books

Christy Barritt new releases Part Two Aug 15, 2021

As promised here is Part 2, with a variety of bargain releases this time.

New series are always fun, I’ve read book one in this mystery series and I’m thrilled with the chance to read book 2.

The Inn on Hanging Hill (The Beach House Mystery Series Book 2)

Amazon quote:

Lindsey Waters never wanted to return to the seaside inn where she grew up. Too many traumatic memories surrounded the place. But with her career on the fritz, she has no choice but to return to her childhood home. Her plan: renovate the inn, sell it, and start fresh somewhere else.

Her strategy goes awry when mysterious incidents begin happening at the inn—dangerous incidents. Someone wants to scare her away. But why?

When she reconnects with childhood friend Benjamin Harris, Lindsey is reminded that not all her memories here were bad. But something is different about him, something she can’t quite put her finger on. She’s certain he’s harboring secrets. Can she really trust the man he has become?

With her past closing in, she’s tempted to run. Otherwise, the inn might be her final resting place.

****************************

I’ve read and enjoyed books 1 -5 and after reading the synopsis for book 6, I can hardly wait to see it.

Unwavering Security (Saltwater Cowboys Book 6)

Amazon quote:

Thaddeus Blackwell and Miranda Stewart have one common goal: make sure their best friends have their dream wedding. As best man and maid of honor, it’s their duty to make sure Grant Matthews and Abigail Ferguson’s big day goes off without a hitch.

Things don’t go as planned when the Texas ranger and city slicker reporter stumble—literally—into an old, abandoned motel now buried by sand dunes. What they uncover turns all their plans upside down. Now they’re not just helping with the wedding but they’re trying to stay alive.

Their opposing personalities complicate everything and perhaps could even get them killed. Their friends’ upcoming “for better or worse” vows are turning into “for worse”—a lot worse—especially as danger closes in.

**************************

I’ve not seen all of this next series but I liked what I did read. I’ll have to check to see what’s going on with it, I’m not sure how I managed to miss a few. I’ll enjoy book 5 anyway.

Legacy of Lies (Fog Lake Suspense Book 5)

Amazon quote:

Madison Colson never wanted to come back to Fog Lake, Tennessee. Her family’s reputation was forever tarnished when her father was accused of a string of violent murders over a decade ago. She and her brothers were shunned from the area—by everyone except their aunt. At least, that’s how it felt.

Now her aunt is dying, and Madison is the only one who can help. But as soon as she arrives back in town, trouble starts—big trouble.

Another young woman is dead, and the method seems eerily similar to the murders her father was convicted of. Now the whole town is on edge—and pointing fingers.

When FBI Agent Ryan Michaels is sent to investigate, Ryan and Madison instantly clash. But unless they manage to work together, the killer will remain at large . . . and Madison might become his next victim.

**************************

This last series is quite different from all the other ones. I’ve read book 1 and loved it and I’m looking forward to book 2 with great anticipation.

Crime Strikes a Chord (The School of Hard Rocks Mysteries Book 2)

Amazon quote:

When Camryn Paine’s student assistant asks for her help, Camryn finds it hard to say no. The Gleason family, alumni of the music conservatory where Camryn works, hired a company to assist with a move across town. Now the company, along with a truck full of their possessions has vanished.

The family is desperate to find their belongings, especially a violin that goes back multiple generations. The request strikes a sentimental chord with Camryn.

Camryn attempts to use her refined audio abilities to pinpoint anyone who may be trying to pass the violin off as their own—and she suspects it’s someone at the music conservatory.

But the guilty party is determined to keep Camryn silent—permanently, if necessary.

I’m feeling like all this excitement is a bit over the top. The problem is it’s all true. I follow this is author more closely than any other. I think it must be her characters and the jobs she gives them. Whatever it is she does with her stories, it works for me.

I really want to write another post today but I’m getting a little bored with what I’ve been doing and really need something different. I’d like to write a story but I have no ideas in mind. Zero.

If not today maybe tomorrow inspiration will strike.

In the meantime … we can be

Happy Reading!

Trouble is, if I’m reading I’m not thinking. What a dilemma! 🙂

This and that August 14, 2021

So, first off this morning, I’m catching up on sites I follow on YouTube. This particular guy is prolific and it’s very easy to fall behind on his channels.

I love the video I’m about to share and I think you will love it too.

The creator of this series is a Hollywood producer, he has worked on shows like Entertainment Tonight and other shows you may recognize. I can’t think of them all at the moment but I can tell you this… he knows how to do a good job.

He is not just a producer, he also a writer working on the script for an outer space type movie that doesn’t yet have a name.

While researching to make sure his script is production ready he formed a connection with an astrophysicist who, it turns out, is excited about his project. They clicked as like-minded people even though they work in vastly different disciplines. Out of this unlikely friendship they’ve created another video project, totally unrelated to the original film idea.

This explanation may be clear as mud but if you watch their first introductory video explaining how they met and what they are trying to do, it will make more sense.

They have many videos in the new series, already edited and ready to go. This lets us know it’s not a bright idea that will fizzle out after a couple of episodes.

These guys are interesting and funny. They have good chemistry and are relaxed with each other, which makes the watching experience enjoyable. The content is excellent and that makes it even better.

I enjoy listening to these guys and I’m very much looking forward to more. They have a new release scheduled for Saturday mornings, 6 am California time.

Check this out. Jeff and Mike

************************

Mike is currently on a road trip that started just this morning, well technically he left home last night but couldn’t have gone far. The idea of the trip is to share grassroots America with his fellow countrymen as well as the rest of the world. He’s hardly left home and is already posting short clips on some of his other channels.

This guy is a Type A personality with ADD. He has new ideas popping out everywhere… but he produces and he’s interesting to watch.

At least many of us think so.

He has his detractors like most everyone else on line these days. I’ve heard it said of leaders… if everyone loves you – you’re not doing it right. He must be doing something right.

I’m sure I will share more from this guy. He has a bunch of other channels, with different focus and goals in mind. He also has several episodes he does with his mom. She is an interesting lady and has an exceptional story to tell.

But that will be a post for another day.

Oops, I see he just posted another video on this channel about his mom, must go watch it.

There’s a good chance you will see more from me later on.

Happy Watching and Reading

On His Bended Knee: a Sweet Marriage of Convenience series (The Brides of Purple Heart Ranch Book 1)

Amazon qute:

She needed a place to stay. He needed to save his ranch. Together they just might make a home.

Sgt. Dylan Banks lost more than just his leg in the war. His fiancée and family turned their backs on him as well. Now, he’s determined to create a safe place where wounded warriors like himself can heal. But a hidden zoning law requires all residents of the Purple Heart Ranch to be married. To save his dream, Dylan and his men will have to tie the knot—but can a man with such deep scars inside and out believe in love again?

Maggie Shaw lost both her job as a veterinary technician and her apartment on the same day. Who knew her unreasonable landlord would kick her out for being four dogs over the one pet limit? Now, she and her gang of special-needs dogs are in trouble. Fate puts her in Dylan’s path with a proposal that seems too good to be true—but can her heart bear a loveless marriage of convenience?

Dylan yearns to reach out for Maggie’s healing touch, but he keeps his distance, convinced his wounds are too deep for her embrace. Maggie sees past Dylan’s injuries, but if she fails to capture his heart they both could lose it all: her beloved animals, his ranch, and each other.

I’m enjoying the cooler weather we are having these days, even more than I usually do. It’s going to heat up again over the weekend, that’s why, 30-35 C.

I’d better get to the grocery store before it hits.

Happy Friday folks
