One thing leads to another. That’s how this list of suggestions fell into place and it all started with a suggestion from BookBub. We have three authors I’ve not read yet. Although I think I’ve met Vannetta Chapman in a collection somewhere.

But when chance leads a mysterious woman to appear in his life, his world is suddenly thrown off its axis. Mallory wants nothing to do with him, and he is determined to find out why. Attracted to the one man she thinks she can never have, Mallory battles with her heart’s deepest desires. Her barriers slowly break down until jealousy flares–revealing her haunted past. Protected (Jacobs Family Series Book 2)  ($1.37)

Protected

Amazon quote:

Erin Jacobs doesn’t hesitate to jump into rescue mode when she receives a desperate call in the middle of the night. As owner of the Noah’s Ark Animal Shelter, it’s her job to rehabilitate and find new homes for animals. But from the moment she answers the phone, she knows that this case is different.

A woman’s frantic plea.
Directions to a deserted hunter’s cabin.
The demand that she come alone.
All culminate into the moment when she is standing on a dilapidated porch in the middle of the woods and looking down into a washtub at an infant child.

Social worker Travis Williams is assigned to her case. Travis sees more in Erin than someone who rescues strays. She’s unconventional, strong-willed, and caring. It could be that she would make the perfect parent for Josh.

Well, I hope someone will join me and be excited about this selection of previously unseen reading material. I’m looking forward to finding out what this sampling of new authors is all about too. Ok, so they are books… I’ll admit, that’s enough for me right there. I just hope they are over-the-top good.

Happy Reading y’all!

I think these southern characters are getting to me. I keep wanting to say y’all.

Have a good day tomorrow.

Books started but not finished May 03, 2020 Edition

It’s time again to clear out the collection of started-but-not-read. Books I tried to like but just couldn’t get into for some reason. This isn’t a commentary on whether they are good or bad. I would have had to read farther along for the ability to make that kind of declaration. I’ll admit there were a few I did decide I didn’t like, but for the most part it was just lack of interest.

So, in no particular order here goes.

I’ve read complete books in these two collections, just not all three of each.

Some of the books mentioned today have been on my device since 2018, it’s good to have things cleaned up and the number of pages reduced somewhat. I’d like to get it back  to under twenty pages but I don’t think that is going to happen anytime soon. 🙂

Happy Reading! May you find many books to like.

Read and enjoyed almost May edition

My favorite book in this batch is Taken by Dee Henderson. It is a brilliant story with well developed, complex, relatable characters. The plot rolls out in well planned bits and the story builds with each addition. It’s unpredictable and impossible to put down. A heart wrenching story told with sensitivity, understanding and tenderness. It will bring you to tears in places without shredding your heart with the terror. Did I mention it’s impossible to put down?

Taken Dee Henderson (still a bargain)

Taken

Amazon quote:

An investigator who knows tragic loss firsthand,
and his new client, missing far too long…

Abducted at the age of sixteen and coerced into assisting the Jacoby crime family, Shannon Bliss has finally found a way out. She desperately wants to resume some semblance of normal life, but she also knows she has some unfinished business to attend to. She might have enough evidence to put her captors behind bars for a very long time.

When Shannon contacts private investigator Matthew Dane, a former cop, to help her navigate her reentry into society, he quickly discovers that gaining her freedom doesn’t mean her troubles are over. If the Jacoby family learns she is still alive, they’ll stop at nothing to silence her.

My next favorite in this list was Justified Means, another book I could not put down. This is my new favorite out of the many Chautona Havig stories I’ve read. All of the things I had to say about well written characters and unpredictable plot in Taken could be said here too. The lasting impression for me was the smooth ride, carried away with the story.

Justified Means (Book One) (The Agency Files 1)

Justified Means

Lives saved, restored, guarded–protected from the side of life most never see. Their clients are usually wealthy, important–desperate. Bargain books April 22, 2020

Another midnight browsing session and it looks like it could be good. The first one to catch my eye is a bargain at $0.99, it’s written by a corporate attorney (which, in my mind, gives her some credibility for this genre) and at first glance it does look interesting. It seems I am following the author on Amazon so that must be a good sign.

Breach of Trust (Atlanta Justice Book #3)

Breach of Trust

Amazon quote:

Corporate litigator Mia Shaw suffers the shock of her life when she finds her colleague and friend brutally murdered. Grief-stricken and furious, Mia vows that she will do anything to seek justice and make the killer pay.

The man accused of the murder is a friend of security tech guru Noah Ramirez, but the evidence just doesn’t add up. To save his former ATF partner, Noah needs to convince Mia that the real killer is still on the loose.

Mia soon has more than the criminal prosecution to worry about, however. She is tasked with taking over her friend’s last case and learns he was hiding secrets about his client. She thinks she may have stumbled upon corporate espionage that has turned deadly, but she has no idea of the danger involved. Her only ally is Noah, despite their difference of opinion on the homicide case. Can he win Mia over to his side and protect her from ever-growing threats?

***********

I see another one from the same author, a legal thriller this time, and it’s a bargain at $1.42 CDN. I’m ready for a chance of pace in reading material and I think these books might do it for me. I am a Dekker and a Peretti fan and this is similar to their writing, according to the endorsement below.

Trial & Tribulations (A Windy Ridge Legal Thriller Book 1)

Trials and Tribulations

Amazon quote:

High-powered attorney Olivia Murray faces the biggest test of her career when she is assigned to represent Astral Tech, a New Age tech company, in a lawsuit filed by its biggest competitor. While Olivia is accustomed to hard fights in the courtroom, she arrives in Windy Ridge and discovers there is much more to this case than the legal claims—forces of darkness are at work.

Windy Ridge quickly turns from quiet Chicago suburb to spiritual battleground, and Olivia must rely on her faith to defend against legal and spiritual attacks. Although they are enemies in the courtroom, Olivia finds a friend and unlikely ally in opposing counsel, Grant Baxter. Once a skeptic about faith, he ultimately comes to her aid when she needs it most.

The battle between evil forces heats up in and out of the courtroom, pushing Olivia to the breaking point. Will she be able to help good triumph over evil, or will the town of Windy Ridge be torn apart?

“This book is sure to appeal to fans of Dekker and Peretti.” —By the Book

In the meantime, I’ve just started Justified Means. It is still a bargain at $1.39 and you need to hurry if you are interested, it won’t last long. I don’t expect this read will be quite as intense as the first two are bound to be.

Justified Means (Book One) (The Agency Files 1)

I’m off to read a little before lights out. Get a chapter or two in to see if the current book will turn out to be a good choice. If I can keep my eyes open that is, they are a little droopy.

Strong women is the theme in the suggested collection of bargain books today. Many of them are not coming up for me at the advertised  low price though. At least, one did and it’s offered at $1.39 CDN. Browsing should find us another one or two.

Justified Means~

Erika Polowski, in grave danger–danger she has no idea exists–finds herself captive, shackled, bound, gagged. Her captors have the most unbelievable story, yet as the enemy manages, time after time, to get too close, she has to decide who or what to trust. Can she believe the man who daily holds her at gunpoint? Does she trust her gut? She is certain that she knows nothing that could possibly matter to anyone–has done nothing that should put her in danger.

For Keith Auger, it’s just another assignment. Extract the client, protect the client, return the client to her life with minimal interruption. Except that this “client” isn’t so keen on being protected. His usual cheerful demeanor disappeared the night he helped her escape from her home–escape with the aid of duct tape, rope, and the dark of night.

I’m currently reading and enjoying an excellent book that, unfortunately, has gone back to full price. It has a fresh take on its Romance/Mystery story line, and best of all, it has depth.

Darkwater Secrets (Darkwater Inn Book 1)

Darkwater Secrets

A murder investigation uncovers sordid secrets and haunting mistakes

The Darkwater Inn stands tall and proud in the French Quarter, the hub of New Orleans. Bourbon Street is bustling, and general manager Adelaide Fountaine has her hands full with a hotel at capacity. But she is shocked when a body is found: a hotel guest stabbed with a kitchen knife.

Detective Beau Savoie, Adelaide’s childhood friend, is on the case. As Beau digs into the victim’s past, he unearths a shocking connection between Adelaide and the murdered guest. Beau is hurt that his friend–the woman he’s quietly loved for years–kept the truth from him. To make matters worse, the stress of the investigation has sent Adelaide right into the comforting arms of her coworker Dimitri. But Beau can’t press Adelaide too hard . . . because he’s keeping secrets of his own.

Well, that’s it for tonight. An interesting selection though and that makes up for the short list I think.

Technically it is April 22nd but since it’s just past midnight, I’m still up anyway, and it is my blog, after all, I’ll just go ahead and label this post April 21st. Who knows, tomorrow could be a good day for suggestions and then there would be a real need for a post labeled April 22nd. It could happen.

In the meantime … Happy Reading!

Another installment of Read and Enjoyed

Two parts to this April listing of Read and Enjoyed was not in the original plan. I have a bad habit of clicking in places I ought not to when I’m clearly not ready to hit publish. I’m never sure how it happens but I would guess it’s impatience. Wishful thinking that the computer will work faster than it does. Clicking in the right spot prematurely brings amazingly bad results sometimes. Oh well, no harm done… this time.

So to carry on…

This first book was a fun read. It reminded me of Get Smart the TV series from the ‘sixties. Not quite believable but fun anyway. I’m happy to report this is still FREE.

Red Rover, Red Rover (The Accidental Cases of Emily Abbott Book 1)

Red Rover

Amazon quote:

He makes terrible coffee, but he sure is good in a car chase!

Emily Abbott is working hard as a coffee barista in downtown Phoenix, keeping one eye on her tiny college fund and the other on the mysterious new guy with his profound lack of coffee-making skills. Just when she thinks they might be getting the hang of working together, she’s abruptly thrust into his world of espionage and danger.

Brent Peterson, aka Agent Nighthawk, needs her help protecting a defecting enemy spy and keeping the information he carries out of the wrong hands. But she’s just a barista—what can she do?

This next one is not trying to be fun but was a good read nonetheless. It’s still a bargain at $1.99

Agent Undercover (Rose Mountain Refuge Book 1)

Agent Undercover

Free books April 19, 2020

Today is a browsing day, looking to find some new and interesting books.

Here is a FREE Western Romance that could be interesting. I think we downloaded another one similar to this yesterday.

A FREE book from last fall – read, enjoyed, and happily seen again. This is a favorite of mine. It is definitely not the usual as it has the distinct habit of travelling in unexpected directions. I liked it enough to read it again, if only I had the time.

A Woman of Fortune (Texas Gold Collection Book 1)

A Woman of Fortune

Amazon quote:

You never know what you’re really made of until you lose everything.

Texas socialite Claire Massey is living the dream—designer clothes, luxury cars, stunning homes. But everything comes crashing down when her charming cattle broker husband is arrested for fraud. Suddenly she finds herself facing attorneys, a media frenzy, and a trail of broken hearts. Betrayed and humiliated, Claire must maneuver incredible odds to save her family—and discover a life worth living.
Author Kellie Coates Gilbert delivers a story both poignant and emotionally gripping that celebrates the kind of fortune that lasts.

Another FREE book I’ve seen before, in 2017. I can still remember it being a favorite and I do plan to take the time to skip through and refresh my memory on this one.

The Watchmaker’s Daughter (Glass and Steele Book 1)

The Watchmaker's daughter

Amazon quote:

India Steele is desperate. Her father is dead, her fiancé took her inheritance, and no one will employ her, despite years working for her watchmaker father. Indeed, the other London watchmakers seem frightened of her. Alone, poor, and at the end of her tether, India takes employment with the only person who’ll accept her – an enigmatic and mysterious man from America. A man who possesses a strange watch that rejuvenates him when he’s ill.

Matthew Glass must find a particular watchmaker, but he won’t tell India why any old one won’t do. Nor will he tell her what he does back home, and how he can afford to stay in a house in one of London’s best streets. So when she reads about an American outlaw known as the Dark Rider arriving in England, she suspects Mr. Glass is the fugitive. When danger comes to their door, she’s certain of it. But if she notifies the authorities, she’ll find herself unemployed and homeless again – and she will have betrayed the man who saved her life.

I’m currently reading and enjoying Snow Angel, sad it is not still a bargain for you.

Snow Angel

When Noah Wesley heard the faint sound outside the door of his remote Alaskan mountain cabin during a violent nighttime blizzard, it was no less than the voice of God that urged him to take a closer look, soon to discover his snow angel.

Unconscious and more than half frozen to death, her name, as Noah would later learn after boldly saving her life, was Elizabeth, a beautiful young woman, fragile yet fierce, and intent on discovering gold like so many others in that region during the late 1800s.

Happy Reading.

I hope there is something here that captures your interest.

Lauren’s target is a mysterious being who has rescued people from peril all over the world, only to disappear without a trace soon after performing the miracle. Armed with various newspaper accounts of the alleged angel’s exploits, an artist rendering of the angel’s face, and assisted by a kindly seminary professor specializing in angel studies, Lauren hits the road in an all-out effort to do the impossible and acquire the interview.
But Lauren soon discovers she isn’t the only one searching for the hero. A secretive group of people have spent large sums of money trying to capture him. And the more Lauren learns of these dangerous individuals and their plans to alter the planet, the more convinced she becomes she’s chasing the wrong story altogether.
An action thriller tour de force with an over-arching Christian theme, The Chronicles of the Mercy Giver crosses over into multiple genres, including mystery, suspense, fantasy, science-fiction, and dystopian.
