Oh my goodness! Christmas is arriving way too fast. The being-ready panic is starting to close in. Probably because more family than usual will be here this year and that means a different normal. It will be good, we are very excited to be together this Christmas.

When I’m not thinking of Christmas I’m thinking of books and that’s where my mind is now, A change in subject was needed.

So, BookBub has a suggestion that is quite the departure from our regular fare. We’ve not seen this author before either and a quick look leaves us with no idea what to expect. I’m up for giving it a try to see what it is all about.

Reading some of the reviews it seems a trigger warning is in order due to heavy subject matter — abuse, and victimization. They did say it was handled well and in general was a needed conversation but for some readers it was a shock, they would have been better prepared with a warning.

The Girl Who Could Breathe Under Water: A Novel

The best fiction simply tells the truth.
But the truth is never simple.

When novelist Kendra Brennan moves into her grandfather’s old cabin on Hidden Lake, she has a problem and a plan. The problem? An inflammatory letter from A Very Disappointed Reader. The plan? To confront Tyler, her childhood best friend’s brother–and the man who inspired the antagonist in her first book. If she can prove that she told the truth about what happened during those long-ago summers, perhaps she can put the letter’s claims to rest and meet the swiftly approaching deadline for her next book.

But what she discovers as she delves into the murky past is not what she expected. While facing Tyler isn’t easy, facing the consequences of her failed friendship with his sister, Cami, may be the hardest thing she’s ever had to do.

Plumb the depths of the human heart with this emotional exploration of how a friendship dies, how we can face the unforgivable, and how even those who have been hurt can learn to love with abandon.

************************

If you need a complete change of pace at this point, BookBub has another suggestion I wasn’t going to mention, we’ve seen so many like it in the last while.

On the other hand, maybe this will be a welcome change after the heavy tone of the first book.

Currently…

I did go for one of yesterday’s books after all. I’m half way through and having trouble staying away from it.

Life Flight (Extreme Measures Book #1)

“An edge-of-your-seat suspense thriller from start to finish.”–Library Journal (so true.)

EMS helicopter pilot Penny Carlton is used to high stress situations, but being forced to land on a mountain in a raging storm with a critical patient–and a serial killer on the loose–tests her skills and her nerve to the limit. She survives with FBI Special Agent Holt Satterfield’s help. But she’s not out of the woods yet.

In the ensuing days, Penny finds herself under attack. And when news reaches Holt that he may not have gotten his man after all, it will take all he and Penny have to catch a killer–before he catches one of them.

***********************

I’d better do some supper, and some vacuuming while trying to stay away from the book. Well, reading always goes with food.

And vacuuming needs lots of breaks to let my muscles recover. Any excuse works!

Hope your day is more productive than mine.

No I don’t, I hope you are having trouble breaking away from your book too.

Happy Reading!

I was looking through the books she has on Amazon and going by memory decided I haven’t read many of them. Then I looked through my content manager and discovered I have 19 of her books, all of them read. Better than I thought. Her books are always at the top of my reading list whenever a new batch downloads. Looking forward to this read too.

Well, I’m pretty happy to have found this one book. After a time of intense and deliberate browsing nothing has changed. Sadly, we are still at one.

I will share my current read with you instead.

Desolate Escape: a clean romantic suspense novel (Jeopardized Reunions)

A serial killer is on the loose and it’s just become personal for the medical examiner and the ranger.

It was just a weekend reunion among old friends. How did it turn so deadly?

Dr. Lacey Elrod is the first-ever medical examiner for her hometown, a place that should be safe from serial killers. But when someone murders one of her high school best friends on the morning of the wedding of two other friends, Lacey must trust U.S. Fish and Wildlife Officer Matthew Flick, the man she left fourteen years ago, to keep her safe and help her find the Dunes Killer before he strikes again. After more murders among their friend group, Lacey and Matt suspect one of their old friends of being the Dunes Killer. But when that friend turns up dead too, they must work together to rid their town of the killer.

Can Matt move past his hurt with Lacey for how she handled their unwanted teenaged pregnancy and how it ruined his plans to go into the ministry? Will Lacey be able to forgive herself? Both struggle with their faith and with each other as they track the Dunes Killer before he succeeds at killing them.

*********************

I was reading a bit of the story to remind myself where it’s going. I shouldn’t do that. Every time I do I get hooked and forget I’m supposed to be writing and posting not reading. At least it’s not midnight yet.

It’s Friday and we have a good book to read for the weekend. What could be better than that?

I’m sure we could think of something. Dinner with a friend. Hang out with family. And that’s just for starters.

Put on your thinking caps and have a good weekend.

Read and enjoyed December 01, 2022

This has been a good reading month. Great in fact, once I took a closer look at how many finished books there were. The worst thing looking back through all of the covers, few of them were ringing any memory bells for me. If they weren’t flagged as read I would never have believed I read them.

I definitely did remember my favorites though.

*********

I know I enjoyed these because they hadn’t already been removed from my device, I was saving them to share with you..

Just for fun I counted up the books purchased in November and then looked to see how many were read.

Thirty-Three new books. Twenty-five of them read. No wonder I don’t remember them all. Flying through them that quickly.

It has been fun, I must say.

It’s actually not that big a deal when you think about it. Most of the books give an estimated read time and it is usually 4 – 6 hours, give or take a few. If there is not much else going on (which is usually the case for me) it’s relatively easy to read a book a day.

Some months I don’t manage to do as well working my way through the month’s books so I’m thrilled with the way November turned out.

There was one suggestion today that looked enticing. 1531 Entertainment brought it to our attention. We have been enjoying this author.

Trial and Error

A small-town lawyer has been searching for his daughter for eighteen years. Now a local girl has gone missing, and he’s determined to find them both—no matter the cost.

Buddy Smith built his law practice around tracking down missing children. After all, he knows the agony of being separated from a child. Not long after his daughter’s birth, her mother took her and ran away. Buddy hasn’t seen either since.

Gracie Blaylock has known Buddy her entire life, and now that she is clerk of court for the county, their paths cross frequently. When Gracie hears that a teenager is missing, she knows Buddy is the one for the case.

The missing girl’s parents are desperate for answers. Together with Gracie and Mayleah—the new detective in town—Buddy chases every lead, hoping to reach the missing teen before it’s too late. While he pursues one girl, he uncovers clues that could bring him closer to the daughter he thought he’d lost forever.

Master storyteller Robert Whitlow will keep you guessing in this gripping legal drama while also reminding you of the power of God’s restoration.

That’s it for new books. maybe tomorrow will be better.

Short and sweet, this time of day. Besides my time was spent reading the four chapter sample. Now I must read the rest. It’s been seven years since the last read from this author. Too long.

My current read is definitely enjoyable. The writing is good, the stories well thought out and engaging. Loving it. I’m finishing up book 3, one more book and then I can go back to today’s new book.

Destination Christmas (The Christmas Lights Collection)

Not Another Christmas by Jaycee Weaver

The palm trees and beaches of Florida are far from her chaotic family as Cindy Sinclair can get. Her anticipated promotion is the perfect excuse not to come home for the holidays… until she’s passed over and the job is given to none other than her childhood nemesis.

This far from New Mexico, Nick Hoover never imagined he’d beat Cindy out for a job. Again. He’s messed up her plans since the day they met, but this time, Nick is determined to prove he never wanted to be her enemy. If only she’ll let him.

When their reignited adolescent rivalry gets out of hand, their boss insists they both go home, face the hurts of their pasts, and bury the hatchet once and for all. With help from her meddling family, this could be the Christmas they quit clashing and give love a fighting chance.

The Hearts of New Cheltenham by Chautona Havig

The only way not to break her best friend’s heart is to get someone else to steal it.

Jarod doesn’t need a month off and certainly not halfway across the country. His best friend doesn’t agree. She’s been researching places for him to go and has found him a perfect match on a dating website who just happens to live in New Cheltenham. It’s a match made online until she begins to wonder if she’s made a mistake trying to offload him on someone else.

A novella of love and friendship that defies a love triangle to interfere.

Destination Christmas offers a stress-free travel experience without traffic, delayed flights, or forgotten toothpaste. Instead, you’ll enjoy wonderful destinations, delightful new friends, and a heartwarming experience!

If anything else shows up I’ll be back later.

This and that November 25, 2022

Photo by Karolina Grabowska on Pexels.com

It’s Friday night and all is quiet on the western front, as they used to say. Probably because it is a holiday weekend in the US. There are reruns on the news videos, and not much showing up for books, or even blog posts for that matter.

Canada’s Thanksgiving was earlier in October so this is just a normal week for us.

It has been busy in my work space. There were government red-tape filing deadlines happening this month so the push was on to get it done. My part is finished and now there is just the paperwork cleanup, that will be a chore. It will be wonderful to have it done though.

So, I should have been here typing but I ended up finishing a book. It never fails, what was supposed to be a brief look always turns into so much more. Not that I’m sad about it or anything.

While I enjoyed the time spent reading, in some ways this book was hard to handle, especially in places, I’m never sure why that is exactly. Maybe it’s the voice of the story. Some books do that to me. I have to walk away at times, long enough for the emotions to even out so I can go back to it.

On the plus side though, what I loved most about the book was the construct of the story. I have not read another story that was framed the way this one was. It more than made up for the distressing tense moments.

There were red herrings and the ending was definitely a surprise. But not a shock. Between that and the great characters it was a good read.

I would happily recommend this to mystery lovers anywhere.

Sarah: Cold Case Murder Mystery Series

Investigating cold case murders comes with a deadly price…

After a life-threatening home invasion, Ava Montgomery refuses to let her fear stop her from investigating cold case murders and she throws herself back into work.

Her next case: the murder of fifteen-year-old, Sarah Lewis.

This time, Ava has a connection to the case, a boy she grew up with: Elite performer and Olympic athlete, Jaxson Wells. Handsome, successful, and currently the lead suspect.

***********************

Book two in this series is next on the list (latest download) but I think for a new read I will start a book that was suggested several days ago and I noticed it came up again today. I think it is still a bargain too if you are interested.

Turbulence (A Kennedy Stern Christian Suspense Novel Book 5)

Facing doubts and terror at forty thousand feet …

Kennedy can’t wait to spend winter break in Alaska. Unfortunately, her vacation might end up cut short before her plane ever lands. As terror unfolds in the air, Kennedy stops worrying about reaching her destination. For now, her biggest challenge is just to stay alive

******************

I’m ready to flop on the couch and check out this new read. If I can manage to stay awake long enough. Relaxed and warm is a recipe for sleep.

************

I stared to say. . .

Have a good weekend.

Then I wanted to say remember even crappy weekends have bright spots in them but I thought I should find a less offensive word to use. I figured I would google the word looking for better sounding synonyms. I had to laugh at what instantly came up.

Crappy Tire. That’s what we loving use referring to Canadian Tire. An everything kind of hardware store that we love to mock. It was a shock to see it at # 1 spot in the search engine. Too funny.

A fun way to end the post. A good laugh.

Happy Reading y’all.

Current read November 24, 2022

Good evening one and all. This has been a quiet day as far as books go. There were a few suggestions earlier but they were repeats of recent books mentioned on other sites. I read a couple of books while waiting for the sun to move past my work computer this morning. They were written in such a way that it was possible to jump ahead every two or three chapters and still know what was going on. They are the good kind of reads to have every now and then, keep things moving a long.

I started a new book tonight and it doesn’t look like it will be the type to let me get away with that kind of behavior. It’s shaping up to be a good read. It doesn’t have the same old same old vibe going on either. I have to say I’m enjoying that aspect.

Wow, this one didn’t stay at the bargain price for very long. Jump on them quick is my motto. It isn’t too bad a price even at this though, could be much higher.

Firefly Cove – a book review November 23, 2022

Firefly Cove (Miramar Bay Book 2)  by Davis Bunn

I cried and still want to, although with time the need is finally fading. The book ended. Intensely bitter sweet.

Honestly, the story brought me to tears a number of times, I would dare you to read it and not cry too. It can’t be done. Really.

Davis Bunn understands on a deep level the way we as people behave in complex situations, which I find amazing.

I think it’s amazing because not many authors are able to do and do it so very well. Charles Martin is the other name that springs to mind when I read a book like this. He has the same deep understanding of human nature.

In both cases their characters are believable, the stories are rich, and every word must be read or we will miss important threads in the story.

*********************

This is a story of the unexpected, a story of second chances, a story of mind bending situations.

Anything could be possible, right?

The impossible starts this way . . .

Luke has been attempting suicide, four times. This time it works. A neighbor notices something is not right and intervenes calling for an ambulance, but it’s too late.

Then there is an issue with getting a pick up from the morgue so it’s decided to place him in the basement of the hospital while they are waiting.

Before they leave him Luke moves and wakes up to a cold room with a sheet over his head. It’s a harrowing experience. As could be expected, things don’t go well and he ends up totally restrained in a hospital bed. With burly guards, nurses, a doctor, and his therapists all surrounding him.

It seems he’s lost his memory because he has no idea about this person they think they are talking to.

Here is some back story.

Since the age of seven, Lucius Quarterfield has known he is dying. Doctors told him he had a “bad ticker” and might not live to see his next birthday. But somehow, the frail yet determined boy managed to hang on and surprise everyone. Lucius not only survived to adulthood, he thrived, turning a small car dealership into a successful chain. But now, at twenty-eight, his time is finally running out. So he’s returning to the one place he ever felt happy, near the only woman he ever truly wanted—the California seaside town of Miramar Bay

Jessica was the only daughter of the only dentist in town. She was able to follow in her father’s footsteps, as he desired. But Jessica preferred the simple things in life—a trait that captivated Lucius from the moment he arrived in town. Her quick wit and carefree approach to life were a breath of fresh air to a man who devoted all his time to work. Soon they were falling head over heels—until Lucius pulled away, to spare her the pain of his inevitable fate.

Now, after all this time, he’s going to make each moment count. Because he knows that everything is about to change…he just can’t know exactly how.

**********************

I loved this 5 star book and I highly recommend it if you are a fan of these kinds of stories. The genre is listed as romance but it is so much more than that. Love it.

You won’t know how good it is until you get into it.

Happy Reading.

Helping with the out-of-state wedding will be fun. The challenge will be doing so while accommodating her neurodivergent son’s need to keep every single one of their Christmas traditions while they’re away from home. At least, that’s what she thinks before her son’s favorite YouTuber, Beckett Walsh, shows up on the scene, knocking her world off-kilter with his speaking glances and knowing smiles. How on earth is she supposed to pull off her balancing act when her world’s just tilted on its axis?

Christmas Camp by Cathe Swanson

Tom doesn’t understand why anyone would want to renovate his uncle’s broken-down Wisconsin deer camp, either, but if it will save the old man’s home and business, he’ll help the ambitious city girl put together the most cliché-filled Christmas ever.

BookBub has a Free suggestion by an author new to me. Interesting, I’m going for it.

Sarah: Cold Case Murder Mystery Series

Investigating cold case murders comes with a deadly price…

While I was looking at Sarah, a new Christy Barritt mystery showed up. So glad I noticed.

High Stakes Deception (Vanishing Ranch Book 6)

Former Texas Ranger and rodeo champion Ainsley Tatum will do whatever is necessary to figure out the truth surrounding her brother’s death in a terrorist bombing fifteen years ago. When her boss at Vanishing Ranch hands her the opportunity to find answers, Ainsley is all in—except for one caveat.

In order to discover the truth without raising suspicions, Ainsley has to go undercover, pretending to be newly married to the man who once broke her heart.

Carter Winslow knows his father’s fatal car crash was no accident. When he agrees to work with Vanishing Ranch to find answers, he never imagines what’s in store for him. Pretending to be married might not be so bad . . . if his fake bride didn’t despise him.

With thousands of lives potentially on the line, Ainsley and Carter must find a way to get past their differences and pull off the biggest charade of their lives. But when the deception around them deepens, the stakes grow higher and more dangerous than either could have imagined.

**********************

This is a had-to-have, it’s not much of a bargain, which is what I’m usually looking for but it is still better than full price (price is the guideline to keep my buying under control, some people gamble, I buy books, what can I say) (it is possible to find great bargains on awesome books) Anyway I have books 1 – 6 in this series, all except for book two. A few days ago I read and loved book 6 and now I must read book 2, the blurb has me hooked. That and Mr. Bunn has a gift for creating characters that are deeply emotional and real. Enticing enough to keep me reading all night. Not tonight though.

Firefly Cove (Miramar Bay Book 2)

A dying man hopes for a second chance with the woman he loves in this novel for fans of Nicholas Sparks.

So he’s returning to the one place he ever felt happy, near the only woman he ever truly wanted—the California seaside town of Miramar Bay…

“In Bunn’s emotional novel, readers will be…swept away by Lucius’s and Jessica’s love story.”—Publishers Weekly

It’s Friday again. It’s unbelievable the way the weeks fly by. I’d like to say stop the ship, I want to get off but life would move on for everyone else at breakneck speed and when I look closely at the picture that thought conjures up, me left behind in a fractured world, I think I’d better cancel that request. Hopefully the wish granting genie wasn’t paying attention to the beginning of this discussion.

Books, now there’s a safe topic for us.

BookBub has an interesting suggestion. It goes with a book suggestion we read and enjoyed a year ago.

When she’s assigned to find the kidnapped daughter of a mob boss, she’s sent to the rowdy mining town of Joplin, Missouri, despite having extended family in the area. Will their meddling expose her mission and keep Lila Seaton from being recovered?

When Matthew Cook decided to be a missionary, he never expected to be sent only a short train ride away. While fighting against corruption of all sorts, Matthew hears of a baby raffle being held to raise funds for a children’s home. He’ll do what he can to stop it, but he also wants to stop the reckless Miss York, whose bad judgment consistently seems to be putting her in harm’s way.

Calista doesn’t need the handsome pastor interfering with her investigation, and she can’t let her disguise slip. Her job and the life of a young lady depend on keeping Matthew in the dark.
