Double Take: A Novel

Double take

Amazon quote:

It’s spring break of her senior year and Madison Van Buren is fed up. Stressed over Ivy League pressure, her parents’ marital problems, and her boyfriend’s neglect, Madison gets in her car and drives west. Meanwhile, eighteen-year-old Anna Bronner wants to escape the so-called simple life–which for her consists of caring for younger siblings, sewing, cooking, and gardening–and she’s well aware that her future will simply be more of the same with a man she doesn’t love. Suddenly, worlds collide when Madison and Anna meet in a small town, realize they look uncannily similar, and decide the grass is definitely greener on the other side.

I couldn’t resist one more bargain. Not because it’s a bargain either. $1.30

The Real Thing: A sweet and clean Christian romance set in Scotland (The Macleans Book 4)

The Real Thing

Amazon Quote:

He’s an embittered cynic. She’s a perpetually cheerful Pollyanna. They both need to learn what trusting God really means.
Disabled since birth, bullied as a child, Edinburgh author Brodie Maclean has no faith in God, or in human nature. He learned young that his best weapons are his sharp tongue and his biting honesty, and he doesn’t hesitate to use them.
When he’s forced to employ Flynn Ferguson as his housekeeper, it’s instant dislike. She’s too cheerful, she’s too loud, she’s too everything. Including distracting. How is he supposed to write with her around? Even always-look-on-the-bright-side Flynn finds it hard to be glad about her grouchy boss, apart from the little fact the generous salary he pays means she won’t be evicted. As soon as she can (“Tomorrow, please Lord?”), she’ll quit.
Neither intends to deceive the other, but only when they meet online, safe behind names that aren’t their names and photos that aren’t their photos, are they able to be their real selves and fall in love. Can they recognise the truth behind their false impressions before it’s too late?

You’ve Got Mail meets As Good As It Gets meets a mischievous ferret in this faith-filled Scottish enemies-to-love romance.

When the war finally ended in May of 1945, Lieutenant Danny McClain made good on his promise to come back for Anya in Holland. He expected her to put up a fight, but instead found her exhausted and utterly broken. Maybe it was unfair, asking her to marry him when she was so vulnerable. But this much he knew: he would spend a lifetime helping to make her whole again.

The war had taken everything from Anya–her family, her friends, her home, her faith. She clung to the walls she’d fortressed around her heart, but what future did she have apart from Danny? At least she wouldn’t be alone anymore.

Or so she thought. When the American troops demobilize, Danny is sent home, forced to leave Anya behind in England. There she must wait with the other 70,000 war brides for passage to America. As England picks up the pieces of war’s debris in the months that follow, Anya shares a flat with three other war brides in London and rediscovers the healing bond of friendships.

A bargain book showed up that is definitely not on the lighter side but… it looks good anyway, even with a few reservations I have about leaving light. There are many Staci Stallings books in my collection but I couldn’t resist this is one, mainly because it’s one I’ve not read yet. $1.23 CDN

For Love’s Sake: A Historical Christian Romance

For Love's Sake

Amazon quote:

Love.

It sounds so simple, yet rarely does it turn out to be that way.

From USA Today Best Selling Contemporary Christian Romance Author, Staci Stallings, comes a historical novel about love, acceptance, hope, and the battle for good we are all in regardless of time and place…

At only 19, Bryna Elliott seems to have little control over the circumstances of her life. With her parents gone, she is relegated to running the household and trying to stay in the good graces of her obstinate, disrespectful brother. But when a long-lost neighbor comes back to town, Bryna’s life might be about to change for the better. If only she can learn how not to be herself…

Daniel Brody, a young man steeped in society’s finer points, finds himself in the midst of a romance he neither expected nor wanted to happen. However, the sister of the young lawyer handling his affairs upon his return to his mother’s childhood home soon proves intriguing beyond rationality. Unfortunately, she is as her brother often points out “uncontrollable” especially when love for those in her charge comes into question. Can Daniel hope to bring this headstrong young woman back under the constrictions of society, or is his life destined to be turned upside down by her willful determination to live only for love’s sake?

Set in the pre-Civil War south, “For Love’s Sake” takes the reader on a journey to discover the courage it takes to truly live a life of love for others. The Christian message of not letting the world tell you what is and isn’t proper when love is involved will inspire the reader to reconsider what love means in their own lives. Come along for the journey, you just might find that love means more than you ever imagined.

My brother called today to check up on me and we got to reminiscing about the hard times cycling in and out of the (many) decades of our life. Hard places that affected everyone, not just us personally. One thing is true about every single hard place we as a country, and even the world, faced – it passed, as a collective we lived through it. Health crisis and financial low places did not last forever. Wars that seemed hopeless, ended.

Somehow I feel very encouraged about this pandemic situation. Good things are going to come out of it. We will learn to do business and life in new and better ways. We’ll be reminded of what is truly important. Our priorities will change and life will be richer for it. Our relationships will become stronger, if we are open to it happening.

Today, Sars and Ebola are distant specks in our rear-view mirrors. One day, in the not too distant future covid-19 will be the same and life will be good again. Remember…just a speck, soon. Months, not weeks, but soon.

There are many things we could do to entertain ourselves hunkered down in proverbial storm cellars. Books are at the top of the my list and I think we need more. It looks like someone else had the same idea because there were more than usual to choose from. Check these out.

All in all it’s not a bad day for new books.

There have been quite a few new books lately and some of them have turned out to be excellent reads. Others, not so much. There haven’t been any that were awful. Mostly they were just OK. I can’t really put the time into OK so if I want to know the ending I skip whole chapters and if that’s not enough, I’ll head right to the end. The two most prevalent reasons for disengagement – content that should have been cut and telling rather than showing. It’s not really a matter of personal preference, it’s a matter of what works. I’m a pretty easy sell for a well written book.

I’m a reader not a writer, but I like to learn and grab hold of any opportunities that come my way. This week Jerry Jenkins (check out his website if you are unfamiliar with his name) offered a free webinar giving seven tips on how to publish a book everyone will want to read. It was excellent content and I’m glad I listened in. He is currently inviting new gild members for his masterclass writing courses and mentorship program. If I were a writer I’d sign up. Check it out if you think it could be helpful.

The other person I follow is a blogger on WordPress, Jane Friedman. Her credentials are impressive and she features highly qualified contributors as guest bloggers on her site. I found today’s guest post, March 25, to be worth sharing far and wide. The discussion was Peer Critique vs Professional Editing. Very helpful. As a reader, I like to promote material like this in my quest to see good writers become better writers. Selfish motivation, I know.

So, back to books and reading….

Happy Reading on this fine sunny day.

Once again today…. Happy Reading

It’s awesome finding enough books to post twice in one day.

Free and bargain books March 23, 2020

This whole social distancing thing surrounding the corona virus issue is turning out better than some of us thought it would. In so many ways. Checking in with some of my friends, they seem to be just as busy as they were before. It looks different these days but they’re not having to search for things to do.

Kids are a different story, it’s a little harder for them to find things to do sometimes. An active imagination helps though and I’ve noticed my grandsons have a knack for making good use of their’s. My daughter shared a picture of her boys intently playing with a small patch of ice in a snowbank on the side of their street. It wasn’t clear what scenario they were visualizing but it was working for them.

This weekend the new reality of universal self isolating impacted my normal hermit lifestyle in an unexpectedly negative way. Not that I’m complaining or anything. It’s the sudden explosion in live-streaming.  Everyone is jumping on board, singers, bloggers, church services, pretty much anyone and everyone. It took all my time just to keep up with some of the interesting new offerings out there this weekend. So much fun.

The flow of new book suggestions has been a little slow anyway so the lack of new posts is all good. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

So, back to awesome book suggestions:

1531 Entertainment has a FREE suggestion I’ve not seen before.

Den knows his girl. Something is wrong. And now he’s in a frantic race to find the abducted girls before they’re dropped into the darkness of the underworld.

1531 Entertainment also has a bargain suggestion for us at $1.44 CDN. We had a suggestion from this author a few months ago and it was a good read. I’m looking forward to this one as well.
