Bargain and Free books February 1, 2020

BookBub has two book suggestions today. One is FREE and the other is a bargain at $0.99 CDN

The Dante Connection is book 2, and FREE, in the Genevieve Lenard series, one of my favorites. It probably is my favorite, actually, because it pops into my head more often than any other book series in the last five years. The plot is great but I think it’s the awesomely quirky, super intuitive characters that have me falling in love with it. I’m even passionate about it, so much so that over the years I’ve tried to do a sell job on any reader who shows the least bit of interest.

The Dante Connection

Amazon quote:

Art theft. Coded messages. A high-level threat.

Despite her initial disbelief, Doctor Genevieve Lenard discovers that she is the key that connects stolen works of art, ciphers and sinister threats.

Betrayed by the people who called themselves her friends, Genevieve throws herself into her insurance investigation job with autistic single-mindedness. When hacker Francine appears beaten and bloodied on her doorstep, begging for her help, Genevieve is forced to get past the hurt of her friends’ abandonment and team up with them to find the perpetrators.

Little does she know that it will take her on a journey through not one, but two twisted minds to discover the true target of their mysterious messages. It will take all her personal strength and knowledge as a nonverbal communications expert to overcome fears that could cost not only her life, but the lives of many others.

Larkspur Cove is the BookBub bargain suggestion. The first time a Lisa Wingate book showed up for me was in 2013 and this will be the fourth one since that. I do remember reading her books, so that is a plus. Especially since it’s been three years since the last one. I’m looking forward to this read.

Larkspur Cove

Amazon quote:

Adventure is the last thing on Andrea Henderson’s mind when she moves to Moses Lake. After surviving the worst year of her life, she’s struggling to build a new life for herself and her son as a social worker. Perhaps in doing a job that makes a difference, she can find some sense of purpose and solace in her shattered faith.

For new Moses Lake game warden Mart McClendon, finding a sense of purpose in life isn’t an issue. He took the job to get out of southwest Texas and the constant reminders of a tragedy for which he can’t forgive himself.

But when a little girl is seen with the town recluse, Mart and Andrea are drawn together in the search for her identity. The little girl offers them both a new chance at redemption and hope–and may bring them closer than either ever planned.

BookRunes also has a FREE suggestion for us.

Blackbird (Amish Mountain Secrets series book 2.) I will admit – I’ve recently downloaded a 13 book mystery collection, which includes the work of Mary Alford, and have yet to read it. Her name sounds familiar though so it’s possible I’ve encountered her in other collections but have just forgotten. This one does sound intriguing.

Blackbird

Amazon quote:

Sara Hersberger thought she’d fled the nightmare of her father’s sins when she left her St. Ignatius, Montana Amish community. For ten years she’d lived in the shadow of the crimes he committed. Sought to free herself of his shadow. Now, with nowhere else to go, Sara is forced to return to her former home where the bad things her father did still haunt the families of the people he killed, including her neighbor, Hunter Troyer, who lost his wife to Amos Hersberger’s sinister games.

But Sara’s hopes at repairing her fractured relationship with the community disappear when another innocent victim is found dead near Sara’s home, the MO matching the murders from ten years earlier. The distinctive blackbird, the killer’s signature, left near the body.

The dead can’t come back to life, no matter how much Sara wants to blame her father for the mounting body count. So who is responsible for the latest string of murders, and why are they targeting Sara? With help from an unlikely ally, Hunter Troyer and Sara had better figure it out soon before the killer manages to silence Sara for good.

I’m half way through my current read – Whispers of the Past – it’s still free and I think it’s  going to be my favorite of the week.

Whispers of the Past

Amazon quote:

On her last night at as owner and manager of her family’s antique business, a stranger arrives at Tessa’s doorstep with an impossible dream: find and replace a one-of-a-kind chair. Having lost more in his life than just a chair, Brian convinces Tessa to procure and restore the furnishing for his stately family home. BookBub has a bargain for us, $0.99 is what it shows up as for me (CDN) but their email says $1.28. It will be a surprise for us all maybe.

Legacy Restored book 2 in the Legacy Series. Robin Patchen is another author to show up regularly in my TBR pile. I’m looking forward to this new read.

Legacy Restored

Amazon quote:

Angelica Rossi deserves to be behind bars, but if secretly working with the police to take down an art thief will keep her out of prison, she’s willing to take the deal—even when she discovers the thief is also a brute and a murderer. As a former con artist, she’s learned to take care of herself.

Grieving his sister’s fatal overdose, Donovan Gilcreast retreated to an eighteenth century lakeside Victorian owned by an old friend, where he works on his paintings in the mornings and restores the house the rest of the day. He blames himself for not protecting Katie, and he blames Angelica Rossi, Katie’s old friend, for introducing her to drugs years before. When Angel, the owner’s sister, moves into the house, Donovan tries to keep his distance, but her bruises pull at his protective nature. Who would hurt a tiny thing like her?

Angel has no idea why the brooding recluse hates her, but despite his glares and grunts, she finds his quiet presence comforting, especially amid the fear and confusion of working as a confidential informant.

I found an interesting bargain suggestion on Amazon, it’s for a book and author new to me. It looks like it’s worth a try at $0.99.

The Vacant House

The Vacant House

Amazon quote:

It all begins when best-selling author Sophie O’Brion is the last person to see a murder victim alive. She looks even more guilty when a woman from her church is beaten, and Sophie was seen with her just hours before. Suddenly, people she has known her entire life begin pointing accusing fingers at her.

Marine Master Sergeant Burke Maguire, an old flame who dumped Sophie years ago, has recently been hired as a police officer in Forman Falls, Texas, and is assigned her case. She doesn’t want his help.

As she gets deeper and deeper into trouble, though, she must rely on him, but trusting him is another matter.

The Collins Case is a shorter read from last year and it is FREE again too. I think I did read this one.

The Collins Case

Free books for January 27, 2020

We have two free books this morning. One from 1531 Entertainment and the other from BookBub.

The first is Loving a Rebel: The Preacher’s Daughters (Glory Montana book 1)  I have read and enjoyed some of Linda Ford’s books, the last one was Wagon Train Baby in March of last year. Today’s series is new to me but I think it will be interesting and a worthwhile read too.

Loving a Rebel

Amazon quote:

Flora Kinsley has always been a red-headed rebel who delights to ride madly across the country. After being orphaned at age four, she has always had an insatiable desire to run. But when her wild riding leads her into trouble, she finds herself lost and stranded in a snowstorm. She takes shelter in the home of a bachelor rancher.

Kade Thomas has lost enough loved ones because of foolish choices and risky behavior. The last thing he needs is to be involved with a wild rebel. But being stranded unchaperoned with Flora for two nights gives her preacher father plenty of reason to insist they marry. Knowing that if he forces Flora into marriage against her wishes, it would make for a miserable situation, he begs for a chance to persuade Flora she wants to marry him.

Will this pair find that love is awaiting them? Or will the truth destroy any chance of love?

*******

The second book today is Rhett’s Make-Believe Marriage: Christmas Bride’s for Billionaire Brother’s (Seven Sons Ranch in Three Rivers Romance book 1) To be honest, I shy away from fake marriages and billionaires, all of which seem to be a popular trend right now. Maybe I’m the only one to feel reluctant in promoting this type of book. I think it has a Hollywood mindset unrelatable to the rest of the world. Maybe that’s not a bad thing? Or is it?

Liz has written other series set in Three Rivers and we’ve downloaded and enjoyed quite a few of them. Maybe we should give this one a try as well. I hope it isn’t the disappointment I’m afraid it could be.

Rhett's Make Believe

Amazon Quote:

She needs a husband to be credible as a matchmaker. He wants to help a neighbor. Will their fake marriage take them out of the friend zone?

Rhett Walker has been in Three Rivers for a year, relying on the Foster sisters next door as he rebuilds his ranch after a tornado hits town. He’s closest to Evelyn, and they spend a lot of time together. While he’s entertained thoughts of starting a relationship with her, there’s always a boyfriend and their friendship between them.

Evelyn Foster runs a successful, secretive matchmaking service for the women of Three Rivers. She helps set up situations so cowboys can get out of their own way and see the beautiful woman standing right in front of them. Business is great—until people start to lose confidence in her abilities because her boyfriends all seem to break up with her.

To save her business, she’ll have to risk her heart. And her pride. She knocks on Rhett’s door—the only person she thinks will go along with her crazy plan. Could their make-believe marriage be exactly what they both need to get out of their own way and find a happily-ever-after?

Friday Freebies and bargains January 24, 2020

Chautona Havig’s Friday Freebie is Vintage Wren January. It was originally published in installments and later gathered into a book. This is the first book in the whole series.

The Vintage Wren January.

Amazon quote:

The Vintage Wren is a serial novel released in several chapter episodes. Volume One contains the first four and a half episodes in one full-length novel.

Cassie Wren. Legal assistant. Convenience queen. Thrifter extraordinaire. If there was a “green police” she’d be a fugitive from eco-friendly justice.

But when a friend’s teasing feels like a challenge, Cassie accepts it. The result? One year. Twelve months. Fifty-two weeks. Three hundred sixty-five days–of green.

It seemed simple enough. Cut back on paper plates, plastic forks, and straws. Easy peasy. But when her competitive side wars against her desire for convenience, Cassie finds it’s not so easy to be “eco-friendly” and “Cassie-friendly.”

Shelter  I read and enjoyed this book about four years ago, it’s one of my favorites.

Shelter

Amazon quote:

She begged God to rescue her.

He said, “Go.”

So she headed out into the blizzard. In a car that wasn’t exactly hers, with a dog who wasn’t exactly a rat terrier, she drove. Until she ran out of gas in the small Maine town of Mattawooptock. Mattawoopwhat? What on earth is God thinking?

But it is there, in a weird little bathroom in a weird little church in a weird little town that Maggie Hansen finds herself. And as God would have it, she finds a lot more than that.

You will love this book because it will warm your heart. Read it today!

Hope Harbor

Amazon quote:

Tracy Campbell never wanted to leave Hope Harbor, Oregon, or the idyllic three-generation cranberry farm where she grew up. But life–and love–altered her plans. When tragedy strikes and changes her plans yet again, she finds herself back in her hometown with a floundering farm to run and a heartbreaking secret. Romance is not on her agenda. Nor is it on Michael Hunter’s. The visitor from Chicago has daunting secrets of his own. But when Tracy recruits him to help save a struggling charitable organization, the winds of change begin to sweep through Hope Harbor, bringing healing, hope, and love to countless lives–including their own.

I’m currently reading Hush and it is sill FREE. It’s definitely suspenseful.

It reminds me of a favorite TV show, Missing, that lasted a couple of seasons around 2003.  Here is part of the Google blurb describing it  – Jess Mastriani was a normal person who only wanted to take over her parents’ restaurant in Indiana. But that changes when she is hit by lightning, after which she begins seeing visions of missing people. Jess decides to put her newfound ability to use as a consultant to the FBI to help locate missing individuals.

The protagonist in this book wasn’t struck by lightening but has an inherited trait behind the dreams. Hopefully it will be enough to save her life. I’m only half way through the story so it will be awhile before I find out for sure. I’m guessing it will be fine, though, since we seem to go for good endings.

Maybe this book reminds me a little of TV’s Criminal Minds too.

Hush a suspense story new to me, from an author I’ve never met. I’m always excited to see something new.

Hush

Amazon quote:

Detective Ford Jamison is called in to help the local police, and he soon has a working theory about the murders. His belief that the killer is using the lullaby as a “blueprint” to target women who resemble Lacey, doesn’t slow the killings. Lacey is now afraid to fall asleep at night because the next face she sees in her dream might be her own.

It’s still snowing, the expected winter storm has come to stay awhile, here in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The nice thing about a cold dry climate, the snow is small light flakes and accumulates slowly. Not like warmer moist climates, close to lakes and oceans where the snow fall consists of big heavy flakes and the inches build up quickly. St John’s Newfoundland on Canada’s east coast has declared a state of emergency with over two feet (70 cm) of blowing snow, with more on the way. They’ve had more than three times what we are getting. You should see the bizarre pictures of St John’s showing up on-line. Vehicles buried, snow drifts covering doors and windows. Fun and scary at the same time.

It’s snowing and cold but we are counting our winter blessings here in the center of Canada.

So, on to our favorite topic – books.

A Bird Died  Chautona Havig’s Friday Freebie. The author admits this is a tough but touching read, based on a real event in her family’s life.

A Bird Died

Amazon quote:

Ask him–just ask him what happened. He’ll tell you. “A bird died.” A Bird Died is the fictionalized account of one little boy’s journey, one family’s tragedy, and one community’s love and support amidst it all.

“He should be dead.” …. Despite the words of first responders and the findings of doctors’ examinations, Nathan Cox didn’t die when he tripped and fell onto a live power line.

This next book will be a nice change of pace;

An Amazon suggested bargain, No Other Will Do $0.99. I’ve read the prologue and this will be next for me. I love it when we have a feisty little girl and an independent macho young lad. The story begins 12 years later and it should be good.  I dare you to read the prologue for this and not be drawn in.

No other Will Do

Amazon quote:

Men are optional. That’s the credo Emma Chandler’s suffragette aunts preached and why she started a successful women’s colony in Harper’s Station, Texas. But when an unknown assailant tries repeatedly to drive them out, Emma admits they might need a man after all. A man who can fight–and she knows just the one.

Malachi Shaw finally earned the respect he craved by becoming an explosives expert for the railroad. Yet when Emma’s plea arrives, he bolts to Harper’s Station to repay the girl who once saved his life. Only she’s not a girl any longer. She’s a woman with a mind of her own and a smile that makes a man imagine a future he doesn’t deserve.

As the danger intensifies, old feelings grow and deepen, but Emma and Mal will need more than love to survive.

I’m currently reading and appreciating No Greater Love . The synopsis was concerning because the main character is planning to have one of her friends agree to help her end her life. She has inoperable brain cancer with weeks to live and the thought of living her last days with excruciating pain terrifies her. There are several in her group of friends who can see the logic of her fear and would like to help. The rest feel there has to be a better way. In the end – no one is totally comfortable with the idea, who would be. A sensitive look at a difficult subject. In the midst of the pain there are light moments of joy, creating precious memories. (From real life experience I can say this is possible)  I’m giving this book 5***** , even before knowing how it all ends.

No Greater Love

I’m finding myself reliving moments from First Wave, it was that good. It’s still a bargain too

BookRunes has a FREE book suggestion this morning, No Greater Love. My first response to the synopsis for this book is negative. The thought of helping someone end their life feels very uncomfortable to me. But…. I’ve read this author before and enjoyed her books. The intent expressed is one thing but maybe twists and turns will provide  surprises and this story won’t go where I expect it to. I’m going to take a chance on this story and see how it all turns out.

No Greater Love

Amazon quote:

For the most part, Kirby Shelton is content with her life. She’s building a new law practice in Colorado Springs, after losing her first in a bitter divorce, and loves to skydive in her spare time. Then she meets Leah Dalton, the computer software queen, and her world is suddenly turned upside down.

Leah, facing a losing battle with cancer, comes to Kirby with a plan to end her life on her terms. Inviting Kirby, and five of her closest friends, to her estate, she offers to make one of them a multi-millionaire. All they have to do is kill her and make it look like an accident.

It sounds like something out of the Twilight Zone, but Kirby gives into her morbid curiosity and takes Leah up on her invitation. After meeting Leah’s friends and sensing the love and dedication they have for this woman, it’s easy to assume one of them will go along with her absurd plan.

While checking out No Greater Love I found several interesting bargain suggestions from Amazon.

The first one is  Second Chance Protectors with Alexa Verde, another author I enjoy. It’s a three book collection in the Love, Faith, and Danger series,  a bargain at $1.30

Second Chance Protectors

Amazon Quote:

Book 1: Brett, Her Bodyguard

Security specialist Brett Jarvis and nanny Ashley Lamott have nothing in common—apart from both loving his twin niece and nephew. When his brother disappears, the children and their nanny are threatened. He’ll do whatever it takes to protect them and find his brother.

Book 2: Colt, Her Reunion

His ex-wife is back. And she’s the target of a serial killer.
Physical attraction and shared love for their twins weren’t enough to keep brilliant scientist Colt Jarvis and his security specialist ex-wife together last time. But when the serial killer who almost murdered Mirabella once before threatens her life, Colt will do whatever it takes to keep her safe.

Book 3: David, Her Cowboy

When rancher and disabled veteran David King finds a baby in peril, the last woman he’d expect to help is serial dater and disgraced news anchor Aster Andrades.

Another bargain; Witness Protection Collection at $1.29 CDN. I’ve not read this author before but with three books at this low price I just can’t pass up the opportunity to see what he is all about.

Witness Protection collection

The Amazon synopsis is long so I’m not going to quote it this time but I hope you will search it out.

Last but not least, another book from another favorite author – Christy Barritt’s Line of Duty. This will make twelve Barritt books I’ve downloaded. I’ve read most of them.

Line of Duty

Amazon quote:

Jaxon Wilder didn’t plan on returning home to Fog Lake, Tennessee, following his tour of duty in Iraq. But after a gut-wrenching failure during his stint in the Army, he now faces a new challenge: his family.

Abby Brennan always did her best to be the good girl and to live by the rules. When a wrong decision changes her entire life, she tries to hide from the world. However, a madman known as the Executioner is determined to find her and enact his own brand of justice.

When Jaxon and Abby are thrown together in the killer’s crosshairs, they’re forced to depend on one another to survive.

It’s a good thing there’s a winter storm expected here in Manitoba this weekend. They are predicting tons of snow and with this awesome pile of new books there is some serious reading to be done.

I finished reading First Wave (loved it) and have moved on to Grime Beat. I feel like No Greater Love will be next.

First WaveGrime Beat

Happy Reading!

A blogger I follow shared a story about special learning moments with his father, then asked his readers to share similar moments they had with their parents. (on their own blog if they want to)

Mine was by example rather than words and conversation. My deep love of reading had it’s beginning watching my mother read, I’ve never forgotten where it all started.

Well, the snow day has started, and it’s sounds like we will not be alone. This is an equal opportunity storm, sharing it’s wealth widespread. Some areas will receive three or more times what we expect. Please take care and be safe.
