It’s time again to clean out the accumulation of read and enjoyed books.
All of these books were great.
*********************
This was a pleasant reading experience and I’m looking forward to it happening again.
It seems wrong to share all this without much comment but the truth is my memories are too dim to have much to say.
That’s the trouble with reading so many books on a short timeline. Lots of skimming to keep things moving and then when it’s finished and instantly starting a new book, there is not much chance of good memory retention.
It gets so bad that sometimes when I pick up a story where I’m a few chapters in, I have to stop to ask myself what story is this again? Then there is a long pause while I allow memories to flood back in.
I do like to read slow enough to savor the experience but it isn’t practical most of the time. Unless it’s an especially compelling story then I do slow down for a stroll through the book.
It’s the constant temptation to buy more books that has created this need to hurry.
My newest justification for buying more than I can read is the thought that one day I may not carry on with this blog with bargain books but I will still have a long list of unread books to fall back on.
I don’t think about this reasoning too deeply because if I do it sounds like a frail excuse.
Frail or not that is my excuse and I’m sticking with it.
******************
My current read, just started.
The detail I’m most impressed with so far?
Three sisters are fleeing from their controlling and abusive step father, with their mother’s blessing. Part of their journey includes a precarious ride down a nine mile wooden flue used to carry logs down the mountain to the river. They are familiar with the water flue and how it works because of time spent with their father who owned and operated the business.
I think it was a pretty gutsy thing for them to do.
Hopefully the rest of their journey will go as well. Probably not though, as tension makes for a good story.
******
With their sharp engineering minds, Laura Stiles and her two sisters have been able to deal with their mother’s unfortunate choice in husband until they discovered his plans to marry each of them off to his lecherous friends. Now they must run away–far and fast–to find better matches to legally claim their portion of their father’s lumber dynasty and seize control from their stepfather.
We are back in business. BookRunes has a FREE suggestion for us, breaking our bookless streak.
We have encountered this author once before.
Letty’s Choice: Courting Chaos – Book 9
Lovely, spirited Letty Boyce, a Philadelphia debutante, has refused her many suitors, believing they only want her wealth. When her father goes bankrupt, he sends her to her Aunt Jenny in Laramie, Wyoming, with the stipulation that she will be courted by three suitors, and if Letty doesn’t choose any of them, she must go to work in her aunt’s dress shop.
Letty is pleased with all three young men Aunt Jenny has chosen to court her. They all seem capable of giving her the love she’s always been looking for, but only one can win her heart and save her from a madman bent on revenge.
************************
That’s all I have for new suggestions at this time.
My current read is interesting though. It is still a bargain too.
Narrow Escape (Vanishing Ranch Book 9)
As general contractor for Vanishing Ranch’s new lodge, Natalie Whitehurst fights to keep her late husband’s business alive and regain her life after his death. When her remote jobsite is compromised, her survival instincts kick in.
Natalie suspects her mysterious new crewmember, Joshua Madden, is keeping secrets, especially since her troubles started around the time he arrived. But when the sabotage escalates from threatening to deadly, she learns there’s more to Joshua than his résumé shows.
With danger closing in, the two are forced to join forces to uncover the person behind the perilous incidents haunting them. Will Natalie and Joshua find their narrow escape? Or will the fate of the lodge be nailed shut before it has a chance to open its doors?
************************
Oops. We have more.
There is a sequel to this book, it’s on pre-order.
Desperate Rescue (Vanishing Ranch Book 10)
The exciting conclusion to the Vanishing Ranch series . . . finally, we get to hear Charlie Soldier’s story!
Good morning, or afternoon, maybe evening, depending on where in the world you are.
It is a good day, we have a bargain book ,,,
and the guys are here to install my much needed replacement furnace. I’m looking forward to being warm again. We never know how much we appreciate something until we don’t have it.
I guess that’s the good thing about the bad things. It wakes us up and changes our thought patterns for the better. Someone wrote a post along those lines the other day. How that the hard times in life can add a new dimension to our character. I’ve heard more than one say – I would never ask to go through cancer, but I’m so grateful for the changes to my life because of that difficult journey.
It seems we become better people for walking through the hard times.
Freezing with no furnace for a few days doesn’t even remotely compare to a cancer journey, but even a small space of time in the cold can test us to see what we are made of.
Well, this wasn’t the conversation I had planned for today. It’s always a surprise, though, when a small thought hijacks our journey and takes us to unplanned destinations. Surprises are fun. They add a little spice to our day.
So, the original simple intention was to share a bargain book that looks interesting.
I have a pretty wide range of interests so I think the one attribute that makes a book enticing to me is quality of the writing. I am hooked on this one. It’s a romance without all the drama of a mystery and yet the sample makes me want to read more.
We have read a book from this author but it’s been 10 years, this will be a new experience.
Love from Afar (Love Letters from Ellis Creek Book 1)
What happens when two little sisters become self-appointed matchmakers?
Best friends Tillie and Lula are tired of watching Tillie’s older sister and Lula’s older brother admire each other from afar. Determined to bring their siblings together, they hatch a most brilliant plan. After all, it’s perfectly acceptable to indulge in mischief if it’s for a good cause, right?
Meredith Waller has an excellent reputation as a wedding dress seamstress in the frontier town of Ellis Creek in 1880s Montana Territory. There’s just one problem: all of the wedding dresses she has sewn have been for others. The eligible bachelor options—or at least decent eligible bachelor options—are next to nil in Ellis Creek, and Meredith worries spinsterhood is God’s plan for her.
Gabe Kleeman has recently returned to Ellis Creek. In those three years away, his affection for Meredith Waller, a woman he’s admired from a distance since their former school days, has remained steadfast. But Meredith doesn’t know Gabe exists, and if he doesn’t figure out a way to use the mouth God gave him to tell her his intentions, Meredith may never know.
Can Tillie and Lula’s clandestine plot bring two lonely hearts together?
**********************
I just noticed books 2 and 3 are on at a bargain price too. Might as well go for all three. They aren’t very long books so it won’t be a big challenge to get them read.
Love Unforeseen (Love Letters from Ellis Creek Book 2)
Will a best friend’s matchmaking scheme be successful?
Tillie Waller finds her life’s purpose in molding young minds as a teacher in Ellis Creek in the late-1890s. While she claims contentment, there is a part of her that longs to marry and be a mother, like her sister, Meredith, and best friend, Lula. But no matter. With her students and books, how could she ever be lonesome?
Willard “Will” Fairbanks has longed to return to Ellis Creek since the day he left the town with his family twelve years ago. When a job offer at Ellis Creek Mill beckons his return, Will eagerly embraces the opportunity. An added bonus? He hopes to reconnect with Tillie Waller, the girl he has always loved—the girl who never felt the same about him.
When Tillie encourages her pupils to write to pen pals in another town, she can’t possibly foresee how such an assignment will impact her own future. Her best friend, Lula, concocts a plan, unbeknownst to Tillie, for Will to become Tillie’s pen pal under a false name. Tillie forms a connection with her pen pal and even dares herself to fall in love.
When she falls in love with both Will and her pen pal, which one will she choose?
******************
It looks like the third one is a pre-order, to be published soon.
Love Most Certain (Love Letters from Ellis Creek Book 3)
Can newfound love heal a broken heart?
Genevieve Amsel is recovering from a canceled engagement when her dear friend, Tillie, invites her to move to Ellis Creek for a fresh start. While she settles into life in the friendly Montana town, one thing is for certain: Genevieve will never fall in love again, no matter what marriage prospects come her way.
Becoming the new postmaster in Ellis Creek is not for the faint of heart. Attempting to do his best to replace the popular Mr. Norman who recently retired, Oliver Bessell relocates from Bozeman and attempts to win the hearts of Ellis Creek residents, especially one in particular. Can he prove to Genevieve he’s nothing like the man who broke her heart?
Soon Oliver makes it his mission to encourage and brighten Genevieve’s day by leaving her notes at the breakfast table at the boarding house where they both reside. And when a mysterious letter arrives at the post office, will the solving of the puzzle draw him and Genevieve closer?
Return to Ellis Creek for another glimpse into the lives of characters you’ve come to love along with a few newcomers in this tender romance filled with faith and humor by best-selling author Penny Zeller.

I’m off to see if I can finish my current interesting read. Life is full of distractions these days and reading time has been badly neglected.
Lots of great twists and turns in this time travel series. Check it out.
As promised. Here is Part Two with more good reads. These were all found while browsing.
Sadly, we are down by one, it wasn’t what I first thought. I haven’t found a replacement yet either but I will keep my eyes open just in case something else shows up.
I’ve enjoyed the recent reads from this first author.
When Twilight Breaks: A World War 2 Spy Fiction Book
Munich, 1938. Evelyn Brand is an American foreign correspondent as determined to prove her worth in a male-dominated profession as she is to expose the growing tyranny in Nazi Germany. To do so, she must walk a thin line. If she offends the government, she could be expelled from the country–or worse. If she fails to truthfully report on major stories, she’ll never be able to give a voice to the oppressed–and wake up the folks back home.
In another part of the city, American graduate student Peter Lang is working on his PhD in German. Disillusioned with the chaos in the world due to the Great Depression, he is impressed with the prosperity and order of German society. But when the brutality of the regime hits close, he discovers a far better way to use his contacts within the Nazi party–to feed information to the shrewd reporter he can’t get off his mind.

I’m always happy to see another book from this next author.
Narrow Escape (Vanishing Ranch Book 9)
This has a very big blurb to go with it. Book Description Coming Soon
Oh well. I’ve enjoyed the other eight in this series and they had interesting situations and characters so I guess we will trust this one to be worthwhile too.
*****************************
I found another one to make three. It’s looking good from the beginning too.
The Element of Love (The Lumber Baron’s Daughters Book #1)
She mixed danger, desperation, and deception together. Love was not the expected outcome.
During their escape, Laura befriends a mission group heading to serve the poor in California. She quickly volunteers herself and her sisters to join their efforts. Despite the settlement being in miserable condition, the sisters are excited by the opportunity to put their skills to good use. Laura also sees potential in Caleb, the mission’s parson, to help with gaining her inheritance. But when secrets buried in Caleb’s past and in the land around them come to light, it’ll take all the smarts the sisters have to keep trouble at bay.

And one more with a little different twist from the others. I haven’t decided if I’m going to read it but just in case I want to …
Mail-Order Bride Mommy (Montana Mail-Order Brides Book 1)
Matt Shannon lost his fiancé to a tragic accident. He does not want anything more to do with love and marriage. But he is now guardian to four-year-old Lindy. It has been a good day.
This might be it for the rest of the week. That would be too sad, so we hope not.
We have bargain books today. For sure this time. And furnaces.
It started with 1531 Entertainment’s suggestion and then went from there. Which is a very good thing.
This book is from a long time favorite author and it’s one I’ve read and enjoyed, ten years ago. I can still remember the experience, which is pretty good after ten years and hundreds of books read.

From here two more great choices showed up. Colleen Coble is another regular here.
Alaska Twilight
USA TODAY bestselling author Colleen Coble brings her signature blend of suspense and romance to the beautiful—and deadly—Alaskan wilderness.
“You hide behind your camera instead of stepping out and engaging life with both hands. You’re so afraid you’ll fail at something, you won’t even try.”
For some people, Alaska is a breathtaking wilderness adventure, full of light and beauty. For Haley, it is a dangerous world of dark dreams and tortured memories. On the surface, she’s here to document wildlife activist Kipp Nowak’s bear encounters. But her real reason is to unearth the truth about a past murder. The suspense mounts when another body turns up, and Haley begins to wonder if the tragedies she experienced in the past are connected to the dangers and mysterious incidents of the present.
From behind her camera, Haley observes it all, including Tank Lassiter, the wildlife biologist who has been forced to lead Kipp and his team into the Alaskan backcountry. As she watches him with his work, she feels a growing attraction. It will take great courage and faith to confront the truth she once ran away from. Before it’s over, Haley may be viewing herself from an entirely new angle.

I haven’t read this next one but I want to. The first page has me hooked.
When Dreams Cross (Second Chances, Book 2)
Justin Pierce’s brainchild, Khaki Kangaroo, is exactly the cartoon theme Andi Sherman needs for her world-class amusement park, Promised Land. In turn, Andi’s park is the opportunity that can rocket Justin from obscurity to success. For both of them, spreading the Gospel through their creation is their passion–a shared dream that could cement a powerful partnership. If their shared past hadn’t already driven them apart. Now, with construction of the park in its final phase, what begins as an uneasy alliance between the successful businesswoman and the talented animator enters a baptism of fire. Disaster stalks Promised Land–and only by burying their pride can Justin and Andi save everything they’ve work for from destruction.
When Dreams Cross is part of the Second Chances series by award-winning suspense novelist Terri Blackstock. Combining fast-paced reading with realistic characters and situations, Second Chances takes readers to where the conflict between good and evil becomes the proving grounds of faith.

There are more. But this post will be getting too long so we need to have Part two. With at least three more books, all in a little different vein as these three.
See you shortly is the plan but my hands are freezing and need a warm up. My furnace stopped working yesterday and won’t be replaced until tomorrow. Hopefully. The heating company provided heaters to help me survive but it’s still pretty cool in here.
It’s crazy. The furnace, as far as I can tell, is the same age as the house, 33 years. It has been working perfectly all this time. I asked the salesman what the life expectancy would be on new furnaces and he said 8 -12 years. Isn’t that crazy?
They say things are made to wear out and I guess they are right.
I’m told the furnace I picked should last the twelve years or longer. I hope it will although I don’t plan to be around here to see that it does. My kids are agitating (and have been for a while) for me to move closer to them. I did move close to them when I moved here but then they moved. They could do that again. Life has no guarantees. Then again they may not either and I would have missed out on time closer to them.
I’ve been unsure for 6 years. It’s time to take another serious look. Hopefully it will work this time. I’d like to finally get off the fence about moving.
This is looking like it could be a good book day. It’s starting out that way anyway.
This first one is an author I’ve read at least once before and the sample is sounding good.
The Road Back Home from Here: A Novel
To survive, they must choose to trust each other.
Seventeen-year-old Jamison Jones is concerned about one thing: survival. Not just his survival, but the survival of his drug-addicted mother. He has to take care of her, to make sure that she makes it back to their dingy motel room, or remind her to eat. Until one day when a knock at the door changes everything.
For seventeen-year-old Ellie Presley, she has no choice but to run. She’s running from her past. She’s running from those who seek to hurt her. Unfortunately, her past isn’t so easy to escape.
Both find themselves on a Greyhound bus. When danger threatens them, they are forced together to beat the odds. But they must learn to trust each other if they’re going to make it out alive.
**********************
Well, the day bombed a far as new books. There were a number of suggestions this morning but nothing that we were looking for, except one. One is definitely better than none.
My fingers are too cold to spend time browsing. The furnace went out during the night and a repairman is coming soon. Good job it is only -6C outside and not minus 20 or 30. It’s 59F in here so it could be worse. At least it is not freezing yet.
Yes, I measure the outside in celsius and the inside in farenheit. Crazy I know. I guess there is part of me that is still rebelling against the change.
The repairman is here so we will see. I think he wants me to upgrade and buy a new furnace and air conditioner.
Yup, he does.
I’ve been thinking about it for awhile since the furnace is old so I guess it’s time. But I won’t tell him that just yet.
I’ve finished my current read and it was sooo good.
There were so many awesome twists and turns, and a barrel full of red herrings to throw us off the track. I didn’t even have to think twice about five stars. You should read it, I think you’d like it.

This was the kind of book I like to savor for a little while before choosing the next one. This resolution rarely lasts very long so maybe I will be able to share what could possibly come next before I leave you. I just hope it will be as good as this one was.
OK, so after some deliberation, I’m going for book two in a continued series. Most these days are stand-alone novels but not this one. Book one was a joy to read, hopefully this book will be as good; so far it looks like it will be. New characters and situations were introduced at the end of book one and already things are headed in a different direction. Looking good.
This is a time travel series. It won’t make sense to you without this small piece of information.

I’ll let you know how it goes. Expectations are high.
Sorry guys, slow book day. No suggestions to speak of today and nothing I wanted to download to my reading pile.
My current read though, is worth talking about. There are a good number of characters and a few different scenarios all playing out at the same time. It is not easy (so far anyway) to figure out what is going on or to tell the difference between the good guys and the bad guys. I love that. Judiciously doling out the clues. Making the reader pay attention.
Some of the characters have known each other but details are still sketchy on how that happened. Some people are related, though we don’t know how. And some are new to the scene but they know someone who knows someone and they are there for a reason that is as yet unclear.
One thing is clear. People are not who we think they are. Maybe not all of them but a good percentage of them for sure. And we are learning more details about how that is every chapter. It’s starting to get scary.

That’s all I have for the moment but if anything else shows up I will be back.
It’s time for another batch of read and enjoyed books.
This first one was my favorite. It wouldn’t let me go and I simply had to give it five stars.
Honor Bound (Love and Honor Book #1)
It may seem odd to seek peace by moving to a war-torn African country, but for medical missionary Dr. Cynthia Myers, it provided a way to escape a shallow life of unearned wealth, a philandering fiancé, and a father now square in the public eye as vice president of the United States. At least here she knows her work and life have meaning. But all that is thrown into chaos when she fails to save the life of a local warlord’s mortally wounded son.
As part of the Army Special Forces “A-Team” on a mission to capture and subdue the warlord, Captain Rick Norton is compelled to use deadly force to save Cynthia’s life. Enraged at the violence she witnessed and riddled with guilt that men died because of her, Cynthia tries to hold on to her anger–but an unwanted attraction is taking hold.
With two members of his team badly injured and rebels in hot pursuit, Rick will have to draw upon all his strength and cunning to get her out alive . . . because he’s beginning to think they just might overcome their differences and be able to make a life together.

This next one was a fun read too. I loved it almost as much as the first one. I would be happy to read this one again. The first one too, really.
The Sport of Matchmaking (Clavering Chronicles Book 3)
For once, he has met a lady less inclined to marry than he is. How unfortunate that she is the only bride he will consider.
George Clavering is much too young to think about getting married. Yes, his older brother—and even his younger sister—have managed to tie the knot, but he has plenty more years of play and sporting events ahead of him before he need consider such a thing. Even matchmaking becomes a sport when gentlemen bet on the Season’s successes or failures in the club. He will not give them an opportunity to bet on him. Furthermore, why settle down when there are young women like Lady Alice who liven the sport of matchmaking with friendly wagers?
Lady Alice St. Clair is the fifth daughter of the Duke of Carr, and as she is independently wealthy and may do as she pleases, she has no reason to wed. She certainly has no intention of doing so. If the marriage mart offers nothing more than the unattractive boors who have presented themselves at her door for the past five seasons, it should hardly surprise her parents she cannot be persuaded to the altar. True, George Clavering has a full head of dark hair and a smile that is as mischievous as it is attractive, but no lady of character would change her mind for one above-average specimen of the male race.
For both, what began as a friendly bet between two bored guests at a ball turned into an earnest desire to help their protégés find happiness. And if some deeper feelings should stir in George to win Alice’s heart, then he has no choice but to dampen them. After all, Lady Alice has sworn she will not marry, and George has applauded her decision. For him to try to weaken her resolve now would be…unsportsmanlike.

More excellent books …
One more
It has been a good time, reading this week, or at least since last time I listed the read books for you.
It has been a slow week for new books all the way around. Maybe this weekend will be better for good suggestions. Not that I need any, it says there are over 900 unread books on my device now.
Must remember to read faster. I start out with good intentions but get into the story and forget to hurry. At least I enjoy the book, there is that.
We have books today, a variety of genres. Some light and some not so much.
This first one was suggested by 1531 Entertainment and Amazon identifies it as a best seller.
A Cowboy for Keeps (Colorado Cowboys Book #1)
Greta Nilsson’s trip west to save her ailing little sister, Astrid, could not have gone more wrong. First, bandits hold up her stagecoach, stealing all her money. Then, upon arriving in Fairplay, Colorado, she learns the man she was betrothed to as a mail-order bride has died. Homeless, penniless, and jobless, Greta and her sister are worse off than when they started.
Wyatt McQuaid is struggling to get his new ranch up and running and is in town to purchase cattle when the mayor proposes the most unlikely of bargains. He’ll invest in a herd of cattle for Wyatt’s ranch if Wyatt agrees to help the town become more respectable by marrying and starting a family. And the mayor, who has promised to try to help Greta, has just the candidate in mind for Wyatt to marry.

Then the suggestion strip had a few good choices for us this morning.

As Laura and a neighbor care for the survivor, they discover he has curious wounds and, although he speaks in careful, educated English, his accent seems odd. Other clues wash ashore, and Laura soon realizes he is not who he seems to be. Despite the evidence against him, the mysterious man might provide her only chance to discover the truth about her parents’ fate. With danger pursuing them from every side, and an unexpected attraction growing between them, will Laura ever find the answers she seeks?

Well, it was fun browsing but nothing more that was interesting and new showed up. Maybe tomorrow. Although three won’t be read in a big hurry so it’s not like there is a need to be greedy.
I hope your day is going well. I’m determined that mine is. I’m trying not to give in to the sadness of one of my kids heading home today. Missing my family is a good sign, I guess. It means I care. How sad would it be if I didn’t?
The sun is shining and all is well in my world otherwise. And we did have a good time when we were all together. I’ll do my best to dwell on memories of the good times. In between chores that are loudly calling my name.
I’d be tempted to escape to a book but I’m not liking the mean characters in my current read. Hopefully it will be done soon and I can move on to another story that I can’t bear to put down.
