Wake up to a song. September 21, 2022

Do you ever wake up to a song running through your mind? And like with a dream, you try to figure out what it means to you.

That was me this morning.

The last few mornings, in fact, it’s been happening. I’d wake up with a song on repeat and it stayed with me most of the day. The first few times the daily songs resonated with me and it seemed like it was something I needed to hear at that moment.

A week or so ago I spent a few hours listening to songs from some of my favorite artists and the recent morning songs were all on that play list. I credited the listening experience as the music source but felt there was added purpose and the lyrics were there as encouragement for the day. I loved it.

This morning I woke up to a song that makes me shake my head and laugh. I have a feeling it was also a product of last week’s playlist but the message? . . . . mystifying.

I felt inspired to examine my emotional condition to see if I could relate to the song and whatever encouraging message it could possibly have for me today. Nope, not seeing it.

What was the song you ask? I’m So Lonesome I could Cry.

Is there a message here for me?

I mean I could be lonely, I do live like a hermit most of the time, but if it’s true I’m not feeling it.

I smile thinking about it, and that has to mean something good, right?

I’ll share this week’s version.

Hank Williams made it popular back in 1949 and it has been a classic forever. You probably know the one I mean. The version I heard the other week was not quite as plaintive as the early Hank Williams but still.

Happy listening (big smile)

This and that September 18, 2022

A beautiful day for a walk. And I took advantage of it. The best thing about walking, aside from good exercise, is the chance to see things we normally miss in the hurry of driving by. People’s yards and what they have done with them was interesting and inspiring. There are a few possible new ideas for my yard floating around in my mind.

Walking also gives a better glimpse into life in my area. Going past the hospital, which I’ve done fairly often, for the first time I noticed the beautiful park/garden area with benches, trees, and arches, perfect for families visiting their friends or loved ones on a nice day. It could be a new area that I just haven’t noticed before but either way it’s a nice idea.

Next thing on the list after a little cool down time was food. The favorite fast food a few blocks down the road was the target. Usually I do the drive-thru and come home, it’s become a habit over the last two years. Today was the first time for a regular eat-in experience. Anywhere. It was liberating. And maybe even life changing.

The other recent event that will bring a little hope to some of us and may even be life changing, was the election of a new leader for our conservative political party (opposition currently.) Pierre Poilievre won the race by a landslide on the first vote which in itself is unusual. With a large number of candidates running it usually takes multiple votes eliminating lowest names until someone is able to get a majority vote.

Pierre has a good track record in Parliament and is experienced enough to be a credible contender in an election. The characteristic impressing me the most about this man is his high common sense quotient. Common sense if the one major quality seemingly deficient in our lives these days. Ideals are all well and good but they are dangerous without good old fashioned common sense. You know, like driving a fancy pick up truck or expensive snow mobile out onto a frozen lake without checking first for ice thickness. It happens every now and then in this part of the country. Rather embarrassing if it’s your piece of equipment.

Anyway, there are signs popping up all over indicating that cooler heads could be emerging and that is cause for hope in these crazy times of acting without thinking it through first.

Change of subject: it’s time to mention the current read, a much better topic of conversation, I’m sure you would agree.

Come Back to Me (Waters of Time Book #1)

The ultimate cure that could heal any disease? Crazy.

That’s exactly what research scientist Marian Creighton has always believed about her father’s quest, even if it does stem from a desire to save her sister Ellen from the genetic disease that stole their mother from them. But when her father falls into a coma after drinking a vial of holy water believed to contain traces of residue from the Tree of Life, Marian must question all of her assumptions. He’s left behind tantalizing clues that suggest he’s crossed back in time. Insane. Until Marian tests his theories and finds herself in the Middle Ages during a dangerous peasant uprising.

William Durham, a valiant knight comes to Marian’s rescue and offers her protection . . . as his wife. The longer Marian stays in the past, the more she cares about William. Can she ever find her father and make it back to the present to heal her sister? And when the time comes to leave, will she want to?

I’ve just started so it’s hard to say where the story is going but for sure it will be a surprise. This is a combination sci-fi and time travel. There are some interesting main characters to keep us guessing and there is a good selection of bad guys with an unknown motive that, so far, defies logic.

I’ll let you know how it goes.

This book is still a bargain if you are interested.

Have a good day and happy reading.

This and that September 11, 2022

I guess it was by design that my current read is about survivors and family members left behind after 9/11. By design of the publishers, that is. That’s OK, I do enjoy the author and the book. It is book two in the series and I’m pretty sure I read book one somewhere along the line, way back when. These books came out in 2004 so they are not new releases.

For sure this remembrance is uppermost in everyone’s mind but the loss of Queen Elizabeth is showing up often in my news feed too. And politics, that’s another big subject. I admit to having conservative leanings and so I’m happy they finally elected a new leader. It will go along way toward being ready if our Prime Minister were to call a surprise election. Hopefully. Enough of that conversation.

Spending all this time watching the news online has had a detrimental effect on my thinking process. Mainly because I don’t want to talk about any of the subjects mentioned above. I need to spend more time thinking on subjects I can talk about but I have to make room for that to happen..

The biggest hindrance to quiet meditation is that I’ve become addicted to the noise and find myself forever searching for one more video to watch. Even though I’ve heard most of the content over and over again.

Both my writing and my reading have suffered lately because of this fixation. Must make some changes and get back to normal.

I did go for a nice walk in the sunshine this afternoon and it definitely interrupted the unhealthy routine. Walking is something I rarely do. The city has added more pretty walking paths, a big surprise to me, and now there are even more options. The thought did keep running through my mind that this was pleasant and I should do it more often. Maybe I will. No promises but maybe.

So my current enjoyable read…

Beyond Tuesday Morning: Sequel to the Bestselling One Tuesday Morning (9/11 series Book 2)

The hope-filled sequel to the bestselling One Tuesday Morning. In this new novel by Karen Kingsbury, three years have passed since the terrorist attacks on New York City. Jamie Bryan, widow of a firefighter who lost his life on that terrible day, has found meaning in her season of loss by volunteering at St. Paul’s, the memorial chapel across the street from where the Twin Towers once stood. Here she meets a daily stream of people touched by the tragedy, including two men with whom she feels a connection.

One is a firefighter also changed by the attacks, the other a police officer from Los Angeles. But as Jamie gets to know the police officer, she is stunned to find out that he is the brother of Eric Michaels, the man with the uncanny resemblance to Jamie’s husband, the man who lived with her for three months after September 11.

Eric is the man she has vowed never to see again. Certain she could not share even a friendship with his brother, Jamie shuts out the police officer and delves deeper into her work at St. Paul’s. Now it will take the persistence of a tenacious man, the questions from her curious young daughter, and the words from her dead husband’s journal to move Jamie beyond one Tuesday morning.

I’m 1/4 of the way through and anxious to see what will happen next. This book is still a bargain if you are tempted.

Happy Reading!

The day we said good bye September 08, 2022

I think I will forever remember the day Queen Elizabeth died. On my daughter’s birthday, today.

I remember Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip visiting Canada when I was living in British Columbia many years ago. I’m not sure what year though, they made a number of visits and I can’t tell which one it would have been. I was young and it made quite an impression on me, I do remember that.

There is no doubt about it. This is the end of an era. She is an impossible act to follow, an amazing woman gifted in a way few are. She was a queen, through and through, it wasn’t something assumed when out in public and hung in the closet when arriving home.

It looks like those coming behind will be assuming a role, it is not who they already are. Sad for us and for them.

Life changes and the world moves on, maybe culture is becoming such that a monarchy – king/queen is no longer needed the way it once was. Maybe a role play will be enough to do the job.

RIP Queen Elizabeth II, we will remember you with a lifetime of respect and appreciation.

LIFE Queen Elizabeth: 70th Jubilee

Out an about, she was a classy lady. At home with her dogs she was real, with her rubber boots and earthy toned heavy coat. Comfortable both ways. Remarkable.

This and that September 06, 2022

I’m coming up empty on what to talk about tonight. We have no good book suggestions to get excited about. My head is not settled on subjects I could pursue. It’s probably because I’ve spent the evening listening to YouTube podcasts. There were a bunch of short ones related to the news of the day, not something I really want to talk about. They weren’t of the feel good type, more of a downer, life is like that sometimes.

The last one, though, has given me much to ponder. It was a long interview, 2 and 1/4 hours long, and in my mind it could have been longer. The interview was between two highly successful men. It was very interesting, mostly because they both got to the heart of the matter in a very real and candid way. It was relatable and left me feeling richer for the experience. I’ll be chewing on it for awhile.

The other unique aspect was that it turned into a double interview. Both of these guys have successful podcasts with huge audiences and of course the interviewee had to have a chance to interview his host. They both did an awesome job of switching roles. I will probably watch it again another day. There was so much to unpack that once is not enough.

I will include the link in case you are curious to see what it was all about. The original guest was inducted into a Canadian hall of fame for marketing genius. His name is Tony Chapman. The subject was marketing but they got into personal territory when they talked about their early life, their families, their jobs and how they got their start and how they progressed to where they are now. Fascinating.

The awesome thing was they wanted to be helpful. They left their egos at home and shared real down-to-earth things. I love this type of interview, it draws me in and touches my life in profound ways.

Anyway, that is where my head is tonight.

It was a good night.

Maybe we will have books to share tomorrow.

Happy reading and maybe even listening.

Happy Birthday to me. September 04, 2022

It’s my birthday today. It has been a good day and I don’t even care that we don’t have any book suggestions today.

Four family members were available to spend some time with me and we had fun. Three of us have birthdays within 5 days and we were all here today. Bonus. We get to celebrate at least twice, some of us even more. How could we be sad about that?

We will party officially another day when everyone else is available. We aren’t given to formal occasions, just a chance to be together and express our appreciation and love for one another.

I should have taken pictures but sadly, I didn’t.

I did try to do a sell job on my last read, though. I’m pretty sure they would enjoy it but it doesn’t appear I’m much of a salesman, no one took the bait. The most avid reader in the group has a good excuse – her last visit to the public library netted her 10 new books. I remember those days so I can’t fault her, she has deadlines after all.

My daughter prefers hard copy while I favor e-copy. There are many conveniences about my e-reader that I can’t live without.

I’m just happy for all the readers we have in the family no matter how they read.

So, I was going to move on to book two in the series I was reading and loved. It was not working for me. The main characters are so different it was hard for me to change lanes. I think a bigger break will make for a smoother transition.

During the break I’m reading the third book in another series I follow. These people are running for their life at the moment.

Risky Ambition (Vanishing Ranch Book 3)

Former Navy fighter pilot Nate Casper, also known as Ghost, splits his time between flying jet-setting celebrities around the world and volunteering to help with rescues at Vanishing Ranch. When movie star Chesney Blake books a trip with him, Ghost sets aside his attraction to her in order to remain professional.

But when his flight plan gets waylaid by a barrage of bullets, putting Chesney in danger, his intention of keeping his distance takes a nosedive.

Chesney Blake needs a break before filming her next movie. But when her getaway erupts into nothing short of chaos and her pilot transforms into her protector, her vacation plans are forgotten. Does someone really want her dead? Or was she even the intended target?

As more incidents threaten their safety, Chesney and Ghost set out to uncover the truth. But as they get closer to finding answers, Chesney is faced with a fate worse than she ever imagined—even worse than death itself.

Bitter Sweet day with one book August 27, 2022

It is a bitter sweet day but not because of only one book. Our family lost an important part of our life today after a long battle with cancer. He was a beloved, good man, and it is not easy to see him go. At the same time the suffering is over and we can’t help but be happy for him. It would take a whole post in itself to name all the ways he is loved far and wide. We often say nice things about the deceased, true or not. In this case the tributes rolling in tell the real story, he touched many lives in positive ways and he will never be forgotten.

There are so many good stories, maybe there will be another post sometime. This gentle giant led a colorful life with his many talents and his sense of adventure.

Now on to the book suggestion that I’ve downloaded and half read. It was brought to my notice by the author and I’m loving this one.

Justified Means (The Agency Files Book 1)

How could she not be terrified?

When Erika Polowski is abducted from her bed and held captive without explanation, she has one goal. Get away before they kill her.

Keith Auger’s job as an agent is to keep Erika safe—even if it means keeping her locked in an abandoned cabin in the middle of nowhere. At gunpoint..

What should be a routine “involuntary extraction” goes south when someone finds out where they’re hiding. Add to that a coworker with a chip on her shoulder and too many unexplained “accidents,” and it all adds up to one unlikely, terrifying explanation..

There’s a mole in The Agency..

He’s promised to protect her, but can Erika trust a man whose job it is to hold people against their wills? Does his deep faith make it any better or just a whole lot creepier?

And just who wants Erika dead anyway?.

The Agency Files: They’ll do whatever it takes to keep their clients safe. Period.

************************

I thought this book seemed familiar in places. It turns out it is because I read it two years ago. Obviously I don’t remember enough to spoil it for me. Maybe that’s a good thing.

It has been a good thing to have this book show up today. It has been a needed distraction.

Until tomorrow,

Happy Reading.

Short and sweet August 26, 2022

No new books today. But it’s Friday so that makes up for the disappointment.

I’m enjoying the current read more than I expected. It isn’t intense like the murder mystery but the characters have depth and their interactions are meaningful. Some of the situations and discussions are thought provoking. I think it’s fair to say there is a point to the interactions and it’s not a bad one. They are gradually allowing new perspectives in their long held habits and opinions and that is always a good thing.

There was an exciting birthing scene where they had to help a new mother-to-be who was in trouble. Her calf was in a bad position and it was touch and go on whether they could help her push out this big baby. Quite the experience for a citified music teacher. In her defense, it was all new but she took it in stride and did an excellent job as assistant to the impromptu “vet”.

It’s amazing how an experience like that can change our outlook on life.

I thought I might finish reading this book tonight but I’m not sure I can stay awake long enough.

My oldest grandson is leaving for college in the morning so we had a going-away/send-off party for him tonight. The backyard party was fun and travelling into the city wasn’t too bad except there was more traffic on the highway than usual. Although I guess, not really for this time of year. Summer is quickly coming to an end and people are making the most of it.

Here is the book, nearly finished.

The male main character is a reluctantly retired farmer who is frustrated because his heart condition does not allow him to work as hard as he wants to.

The female lead character is teaching his grand daughter piano. The student is as frustrated as he is because she wants to be in the barn with her animals, not trying to make pleasing sounds come from a piano.

Grandpa listens intently to the lessons while he is waiting for the lesson to be over. He is picking up the skill much faster than the pupil.

This guy reminds me of a landlord we had once. In his sixties, taking piano lessons for the first time and loving it.

Look at the time, must go.

Happy Reading folks.

This and that kind of day – August 24, 2022

It’s been pretty quiet today on the book suggestion front. That means I have to wrack my brain for something to say tonight. All the good blog ideas happened this morning, but that was then and this is now. I saw a fitting meme this week. the lie I tell myself – I’ll remember, I don’t need to write it down. Yup.

So last night I told you about the book I had just started and how the main character, an experienced diver with no equipment, went after the pilot in the helicopter that just crashed in the ocean. Crazy man. Everyone made it to the surface but the pilot. Our hero did make it back in one piece but without the pilot who couldn’t be found. It turns out this diver guy was really good at holding his breathe and had a little bit of crazy in him when it came to rescuing people.

I’m 3/4 of the way through and it turns out the death they were called to investigate on the deep sea oil-rig platform was a murder. And their crashed helicopter was sabotaged. I’m going to have to keep reading to see who is responsible. Bad things are happening in too many places to have a good handle of who is behind it all. It could all be coming from one source but then again maybe not. It’s hard to see a connection at the moment. It isn’t looking good for a few people though.

Mounting evidence shows the death may not have been an accident at all. Was he killed by one of the activists or, perhaps more frighteningly, a member of his own crew? Rissi and Mason have to sort through not only a plethora of suspects, but also their own past and attraction to each other.

Just as the case seems like it’ll break open, worse news arrives. A tropical storm has turned their way and soon they’re cut off from any rescue–and right where the killer wants them. It’s a race to discover his identity before he eliminates the threat they pose.

**********************

The other thing I have going on these days is a jig-saw puzzle started a week ago when my kids were here. We didn’t get very far on it before they had to leave and I promised to finish it.

The thing about this puzzle is there is a murder to solve. We had to read the included mystery story first. A winery owner has been talked into taking on a partner to help him save his floundering business. We suspect the partner is a swindler and is set on destroying the business for some unknown reason. The swindler’s wife has painted a dark picture of her husband and has become romantically involved with the owner when he feels sorry for her. That’s the very short version of the story.

A dead body shows up in the winery and we are supposed to look for clues to figure out who did it.

The clues are in the puzzle and to see them we must complete it first. The challenge is, we have no idea what the puzzle looks like, the picture on the box is unrelated.

Needless to say, I’m taking long reading breaks in between puzzle moments. Headway is slow. At least it is happening though so that is encouraging.

I’ll let you know how it goes. In both murder mysteries.

Happy Reading y’all.

Not much to be had today. August 17, 2022

I did browse Amazon today looking for books but still have nothing new. Tomorrow is another day and there is every chance it could be better.

Today was a good day for one thing though and that was mosquito bites. Something we all could do without. It’s tough working outside while being eaten alive.

That’s my big complaint for the day.

Other than that things went well and we got lots done.

I can hear a book calling my name too. I had best answer.

Happy reading y’all.
