The offerings today are a little disappointing, the lack of offerings – more specifically, but tomorrow could be better. It’s always a pleasant surprise when awesome new books show up for us.

In the meantime Happy Reading! on this chilly winter day. It’s currently – 27c and feels like – 42c with the wind chill. We have an Extreme Cold Warning for most of our province of Manitoba while the sun is shining, the skies are blue, and a couple of birds were seen flying over the neighbors roof. A beautiful sparkly day. A perfect time to stay inside and enjoy the warmth of the sunshine streaming in the windows.

Today is not a good day for suggestions. Not even from Amazon. Nothing much new happening I guess.

It hasn’t been a good day for engaging books either, I’ve tried out a few and haven’t happened on the one I can’t bear to put down. Too bad they can’t all be winners. right?

Oh well. I tried a couple of books briefly and went straight to delete, I can’t even tell you now what they were.

Then I tried More Than a Second Chance, making it to 23% before giving up. It is an ok book but it took effort to keep going so I quit. I can hear other books calling out pick me, pick me.

More than a Second Chance

Currently I’m trying to get caught up in Brush Creek Cowboy. It’s holding my attention so far but I’m only a couple of chapters in. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Bush Country Cowboy

Maybe tomorrow will be a better day for new book suggestions.

Happy Reading!

BookBub has a FREE book suggestion for us this morning.

A Joyful Break (Dreams of Plain Daughters book 1) I read this book in 2013 and I can still remember enjoying it.

A Joyful Break

Amazon quote:

After her mother’s untimely death, a twenty-year-old Amish woman has a difficult decision to make: Choose to break from the Plain community and her boyfriend and live in the English world permanently…or join the Amish church.

Rachel Hershberger wants to get away from her Amish home in Fields Corner, Ohio. For a year she’s been trying to fill her mother’s shoes by taking care of her father and siblings. She quit her job at the bakery so she would have more time to clean and cook at home. Before her mother died, Rachel was positive she wanted to marry Samuel Weaver, but now she can’t think about wedding plans. She blames her father for her mother’s death. If they had installed a phone in their barn or a shanty, her mother might have received medical help in time to save her life. Her mother’s death has made Rachel question if she should be baptized and join the church. She wonders if non-Amish women live longer and have less stress. Maybe her forty-four-year old mother would still be alive had she left the Amish lifestyle like her sister Carrie did.

When her Aunt Carrie invites her to go to the beach, Rachel decides the time away will help her to decide whether to join the Amish church or to live in the English world. She is conflicted because she loves Samuel and her family. Instead of a relaxing time away, disturbing events happen while Rachel’s in Florida. A photographer snaps troublesome pictures of Rachel because of her famous senator uncle, and a handsome and charming college student falls in love with Rachel.

Another FREE book showed up during this morning’s search.

Brush Creek Cowboy (Brush Creek Cowboy Romance book 1) This is a book new to me but we do see Liz Isaacson regularly. This should be a good read.

Bush Country Cowboy

Amazon quote:

Former rodeo champion and cowboy Walker Thompson trains horses at Brush Creek Horse Ranch, where he lives a simple life in his cabin with his ten-year-old son, Michael.

He’s worked with Tess Wagner, a widow who came to Brush Creek to escape the turmoil of her life to give her seven-year-old son, Graham, a slower pace of life. Together, they run a cotton candy stand at the town’s Heritage Festival every fall, and Walker gets up the nerve to ask Tess to dinner.

Neither of them wants to inflict more sorrow and suffering on the other than they’ve already endured. So when Tess confesses that her breast cancer has flared up again, Walker backs off. Way off.

He’ll have to decide if he’d rather spend even a short time with Tess and Graham than not have them in his life at all.

That’s the best I can do for today. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

Happy Reading.

A group of us went to see the new remake movie, Little Women, tonight and it was great. I thought it was very well done, All of the actors did a good job with their roles, and I liked the way they arranged the script. The only uncomfortable spot in the movie was the father’s sudden return from military duty. We weren’t adequately prepared to see him and it felt like (to me anyway) a character from some other movie was slipped in. Maybe it was partly due to the way he played his role. That was a small thing though. I’d like to see this movie again.

We have one FREE book suggestion from BookRunes. This showed up last fall and it’s here again, I do recall reading and enjoying.  The window painting scenes immediately stand out in my memory.

Heart of Gold Serafina Lyndon

Heart of Gold

Amazon quote:

After the death of her troubled mother, Sienna Hart returns to her small, coastal hometown of Ruby Bay to help her estranged sisters with the estate. She is hopeful that they can mend their broken relationship, and it’s a chance to get away from her selfish, unreliable ex-boyfriend who is pushing to get back together.

Carter Palamo is a kind, handsome, yet bitter man. Burned by his last girlfriend’s cruel rejection of his proposal, he is hesitant to get involved with another woman. He runs his family’s hardware store in Ruby Bay and helps his grandmother with her Christmas tree farm, but makes no effort to bring his dreams of marriage and children to fruition.

When a new artist does a terrible job of decorating the hardware store’s windows for the holidays, Carter hires Sienna to do the work. Neither is open to love, but their fiery attraction to one another keeps bringing them back together. Yet their defenses are just as strong – both coming from tragic pasts and relationships with partners who refused to commit. Will they be able to take a risk on each other and stop the past from defining their future?

I’m not seeing much new or interesting today so we will quit at one for tonight.

I’m currently reading Granted (May Hollow Trilogy Book 3.)

I found it hard to get into this at first but I persevered and I’m liking it much better now. I expect I’ll finish it after all. It’s still FREE too.

Granted

Amazon quote:

Former international flight attendant Annie Taylor is embracing her country roots and racing toward a future with her sustainable farmer fiancé, but wedding plans are complicated by her new job, a mysterious ex-boyfriend, and a narcissistic father.

Meanwhile, Annie’s old-fashioned grandma, Beulah, is facing a shake-up in the last place she ever thought she would—home. A crisis on May Hollow Road follows a friend’s betrayal, challenging Beulah’s forgiving nature. An unwelcome diet, a new houseguest, and a possible overseas trip will all stretch her spirit—if she lets it.

Not too much else happening today in the world of books, for me anyway. Tomorrow my daughter and I are going to see the new Little Women movie while it’s still playing in  theaters. We’ve heard good reports about it and are looking forward to checking it out. I’ve read the book many times, in my early years, and vaguely remember seeing a movie based on the book. There have been a few versions of the movie over the years, not all of them good. We are happy for the good ones.

Maybe there will be something in the way of books to post before I go to meet her, here’s hoping.

Happy Reading!

Read and enjoyed Feb 7, 2020

This is a slow day for book suggestions but we have a few more read-and-enjoyed to share.

Legacy Restored is my 5***** favorite today. It is book 2 in The Legacy series. Book 3 Legacy Reclaimed is scheduled to be released February 11, 2020.  Legacy Rejected is book 1.

Legacy RejectedLegacy RestoredLegacy Reclaimed

Romantic Suspense –  Book 2 is currently $0.99 while the other two are $2.99 each. I’ve only read book two and would love to read the others.

Book one:

All she wants is a home, but there is no safe haven when mobsters are after you.

Book two:

She’s a reformed thief working to take down a murderer. He’s a grieving man who refuses to let another woman die needlessly. When their desires clash, will it lead to hostility… or fireworks?

Book three:

She’ll risk anything to save the company her parents built. He’ll risk anything to save her. Someone will stop at nothing to make sure they both fail.

This next book – Deliverance: Lydia’s Story – is a fictional story about a broken family dealing with drug abuse, loss, hope and restoration.

Deliverance

Amazon quote:

Lydia Blankenship and her husband, Jim, lost their own little girl years ago to a medical mishap. It took Lydia nearly thirty years to stop hating the nurse who administered the wrong medicine. Now, she and Jim are once again in parental bliss as the legal guardians for Lydia’s charming five-year-old grandniece, Gracie. The girl’s mother, however—recently released from prison for drug-related theft—plots to kidnap the little girl and run.

Heart’s Design was a pleasant surprise too. It can be read free with Kindle Unlimited

Heart's Design

Life as a big city lawyer is not her heart’s desire. It is the plan of her heavy handed barrister father. He expects all three of his offspring to become part of the family business.

On a summer hiking trip with her city-girl friends, they cross paths with a small town mineralogist and college professor. Spending time with him she finds he hears and understands. It’s a new experience, to be heard, and she’s beginning to see life in a different light. Maybe she could stand up to her father and follow her heart.

Blackbird (Amish Mountain Secrets book 2) free to read on Kindle Unlimited

Blackbird

Women are dying again, found in conspicuous places with a dead blackbird placed beside the body. The man committing the murders ten years ago perished with a fall in a fast flowing river. These new murders look just like his but how could that be.

Maybe tomorrow will be a better day for new book offerings. In the meantime…

Happy Reading.

Magic happens sometimes

Magic happens when a book sinks in it’s hooks and you just can’t put it down. I love it when that happens. Two books in a row this time. I’m still smiling.

I feel like I need to come up with something momentous to say when I get to the end of such a good book but … I’m at a loss as to how to adequately describe the experience. Some people are so good at expressing their feelings and I’m jealous.

Falling for the Foe was the first book read, (it’s still a bargain price) a romance, and I loved it. It seemed like no time at all and it was finished.

Falling for the Foe

Amazon quote:

She can’t stand him, and he blames her for his company’s woes. Now, they have to work together.

Nia has devoted her career to fighting for life-saving medicines for Ugandans with HIV. But when first-line treatments begin to fail, she must find a pharma company willing to supply her clinics with affordable medicines before patients start to die.

Too bad her firebrand activism just led her into a highly-visible online clash with the head of the pharma company that owns a new and powerful anti-HIV drug.

Magnus is poised to market a game-changing treatment for HIV, but an avalanche of bad PR threatens to destroy his company’s reputation and kill his bottom line. When he travels to Uganda in a bid to boost his social justice credentials, he’s not expecting to feel such a deep attraction to the woman whose viral blog post led to all his troubles.

To get what they want, their only solution is to work together. He’s out to rescue his business, and she’s trying to save lives. Neither ever dreamed it would be their hearts on the line.

*********

The second book was a surprise. I’m not sure why I didn’t expect to love it but I just didn’t. What a nice surprise when it turned out I was wrong. It was a great read. It wasn’t perfect, there were places where I skimmed and moved on. Overall though, it had my attention and I loved it.

The Vacant House (it’s still a bargain too)

The Vacant House

Amazon quote:

She knows she didn’t do it, but everybody thinks she did.

It all begins when best-selling author Sophie O’Brion is the last person to see a murder victim alive. She looks even more guilty when a woman from her church is beaten, and Sophie was seen with her just hours before. Suddenly, people she has known her entire life begin pointing accusing fingers at her.

Marine Master Sergeant Burke Maguire, an old flame who dumped Sophie years ago, has recently been hired as a police officer in Forman Falls, Texas, and is assigned her case. She doesn’t want his help.

As she gets deeper and deeper into trouble, though, she must rely on him, but trusting him is another matter.

Will they be able to work together, maneuver dangerous twists and turns, and finally clear her name?

One nice thing about the progression of this story, it kept me guessing until the very end.

*********

I’m not sure what’s next. I’m test driving a couple of books but they are all looking iffy.

In the meantime, Happy Reading!

Bargain books February 5, 2020

Today’s inspiration includes authors new to me with stories originating from fresh directions. Like this first one.

Falling for the Foe  It’s been awhile since I’ve read anything in this setting. It’s a bargain at $1.99 CDN, and possibly lower in the US. The first few pages have me looking forward to jumping into this story.

Falling for the Foe

Amazon quote:

She can’t stand him. He blames her for his company’s woes. Now, they have to work together.

Nia has devoted her career to fighting for life-saving medicines for Ugandans with HIV. But when first-line treatments begin to fail, she must find a new source of affordable drugs before patients start to die. Too bad she just publicly bashed the head of a pharma company that owns a powerful new anti-HIV drug.

Magnus is poised to market a game-changing HIV drug, but an avalanche of bad PR threatens to destroy his company’s reputation and kill his bottom line. When he travels to Uganda to boost his social justice credentials, he’s not expecting to feel such a deep attraction to the woman whose viral blog post led to all his troubles.

To get what they want they must work together. He’s out to rescue his company and she’s trying to save lives. Neither dreamed their hearts would be on the line.

*******

Another new author/story, a bargain at $1.32

No Longer Alone: Based on a True Story

No Longer Alone

Amazon quote:

Manhood arrived prematurely. At the tender age of fifteen, Prentis lost both his father and his confidence that God loved him. He grew up fast after that day, abandoning his education to take on the responsibility and hardship of supporting his mother and siblings.

Now, in Prentis’s twenties, Avery reenters his life. A Sunday School teacher with a passion for learning and theology, she is intelligent with a captivating spirit. Prentis finds her irresistible. The audacity of attempting to court such a woman in no way weakens his resolve. He’s determined to win her heart. But male competition, vicious gossip, Avery’s unspoken fears, and the ruin of his livelihood hinder his efforts. How can Prentis win her? And if he does, how will they overcome their differences, the hard life on the Oklahoma plains, and a world at war?

*********

There are some other bargain books appearing alongside these books but they are much the same as most of the other books we’ve seen lately. I gave them a pass, for now.

Personally, I’ve downloaded the first of these two because I think there is a good chance I will read all of it. The second one, I’m not feeling as confident so I didn’t go for it. I can see where some of you may think it’s worth the read though.

My current read ended last night and I find myself between books, which is fortunate for me. Falling for the Foe will definitely be up next.

Happy reading!

More abandoned reads, a few available at a good price.

Another slow day for book suggestions, so far any way. A good time to clear out more of the abandoned and partially read books taking up valuable space.

Larkspur Cove. Still a bargain. Maybe it’s just me but I couldn’t get into it somehow.

Larkspur Cove

Never Been Born, it’s months since I gave up on this one. I did hang on the the 3/4 mark.

Never Been Born

Chasing the Butterfly is from last summer (July 2019) and almost half read

chasing the Butterfly

Frozen Footprints, with this one it is definitely me that couldn’t get into it. It is still FREE if you want to give it a try.

Frozen Footprints

The Camera Never Lies is a great story idea but I couldn’t connect for some reason. I did want to. I made it to 40%, a good try.

The Camera Never Lies

Memoirs of a Girl Who Loves God, I made it to the 36% point on this one too. This deals with tough subjects like cutting and suicide attempts.

Memoirs of a girl

Watching the Tree Limbs, is a true story that was not free or a bargain. This author was introduced to me through a podcast dealing with childhood abuse. I did want to read her story but it hit too close to home somehow. Down the road a ways I hope to give it another shot.

Watching the Tree Limbs

Her Believing Heart (The Surveyor’s Daughters.) I can remember trying to connect with this and feeling sad when it didn’t work for me. 25% of this one, a good try.

Her Believing Heart

The Champ is another one surviving to the 1/4 point in the book. The reviews called it engaging but I still moved on to other books for some reason.

The Champ

Summer of Suspense is a Sixteen book collection with Mary Alford and others. I did make it to the halfway point. The cover pictures downloaded for August and September 2019 have disappeared on me for some reason and this collection is not listed on Amazon anymore. Oh well, I liked the collection but needed a change and didn’t finish. Another time maybe.

There are more abandoned books still to be weeded out… on another day. I’m happy just to have freed up 4 pages with this little exercise.

Happy Reading!
