BookBub has a bargain book suggestion for us this morning. ($0.99)

More Than Meets The Eye (A Patchwork Family Novel book # 1)

More Than Meets the Eye

Amazon quote:

Many consider Evangeline Hamilton cursed. Orphaned at a young age and possessing a pair of mismatched eyes–one bright blue, the other dark brown–Eva has fought to find her way in a world that constantly rejects her. Yet the support of even one person can help overcome the world’s judgments, and Eva has two–Seth and Zach, two former orphans she now counts as brothers.

Seeking justice against the man who stole his birthright and destroyed his family, Logan Fowler arrives in 1880s Pecan Gap, Texas, to confront Zach Hamilton, the hardened criminal responsible for his father’s death. Only instead of finding a solitary ruthless gambler, he discovers a man not much older than himself with an unusual family. When Zach’s sister, Evangeline, insists on dousing Logan with sunshine every time their paths cross, Logan finds his quest completely derailed. Who is truly responsible for his lost legacy, and will restoring the past satisfy if it means forfeiting a future with Evangeline?

The offerings today are a little disappointing, the lack of offerings – more specifically, but tomorrow could be better. It’s always a pleasant surprise when awesome new books show up for us.

In the meantime Happy Reading! on this chilly winter day. It’s currently – 27c and feels like – 42c with the wind chill. We have an Extreme Cold Warning for most of our province of Manitoba while the sun is shining, the skies are blue, and a couple of birds were seen flying over the neighbors roof. A beautiful sparkly day. A perfect time to stay inside and enjoy the warmth of the sunshine streaming in the windows.

More abandoned reads, a few available at a good price.

Another slow day for book suggestions, so far any way. A good time to clear out more of the abandoned and partially read books taking up valuable space.

Larkspur Cove. Still a bargain. Maybe it’s just me but I couldn’t get into it somehow.

Larkspur Cove

Never Been Born, it’s months since I gave up on this one. I did hang on the the 3/4 mark.

Never Been Born

Chasing the Butterfly is from last summer (July 2019) and almost half read

chasing the Butterfly

Frozen Footprints, with this one it is definitely me that couldn’t get into it. It is still FREE if you want to give it a try.

Frozen Footprints

The Camera Never Lies is a great story idea but I couldn’t connect for some reason. I did want to. I made it to 40%, a good try.

The Camera Never Lies

Memoirs of a Girl Who Loves God, I made it to the 36% point on this one too. This deals with tough subjects like cutting and suicide attempts.

Memoirs of a girl

Watching the Tree Limbs, is a true story that was not free or a bargain. This author was introduced to me through a podcast dealing with childhood abuse. I did want to read her story but it hit too close to home somehow. Down the road a ways I hope to give it another shot.

Watching the Tree Limbs

Her Believing Heart (The Surveyor’s Daughters.) I can remember trying to connect with this and feeling sad when it didn’t work for me. 25% of this one, a good try.

Her Believing Heart

The Champ is another one surviving to the 1/4 point in the book. The reviews called it engaging but I still moved on to other books for some reason.

The Champ

Summer of Suspense is a Sixteen book collection with Mary Alford and others. I did make it to the halfway point. The cover pictures downloaded for August and September 2019 have disappeared on me for some reason and this collection is not listed on Amazon anymore. Oh well, I liked the collection but needed a change and didn’t finish. Another time maybe.

There are more abandoned books still to be weeded out… on another day. I’m happy just to have freed up 4 pages with this little exercise.

Happy Reading!

Some finished, some abandoned. Still bargains too.

Not too much happening today in the way of free books from the usual sources so I will list a few more finished quickly and then maybe a few started and abandoned. I need to make room for more. Technically I don’t need to make room for more but  ….. fewer pages of waiting to be read would be nice

Read and Enjoyed February 2, 2020

It has been a slow day for Free and bargain books so that makes it a good day to list read and enjoyed.

I had reservations about Rhett’s Make-Believe Marriage, the title left me with the impression of shallow Hollywood scenario. Fake marriage  and Billionaire romance seems to be the hot subject matter these days and books with this theme are popping up everywhere. It’s highly possible many of them are as imagined, flaky and shallow. This book was a surprise. It had more depth and maturity than expected. It was actually a very good read. It’s not free to purchase anymore but if you subscribe to Kindle Unlimited it is free to read that way

Rhett's Make Believe

Cooper: Charmed by the Cowboy (Cowboys of Ransom Creek book 3) was also a good read and it is still FREE

It’s hard to believe I managed to get this far behind on clearing out read books. It can’t possibly have been that long since the last update.

On a positive note: most of this last grouping were thoroughly enjoyed with no skimming.

Tomorrow we may be back to having some free books, if not, I may clear out some of my partially read and may or may not finish books. There is getting to be quite an accumulation in those categories too.

Bargain and Free books February 1, 2020

BookBub has two book suggestions today. One is FREE and the other is a bargain at $0.99 CDN

The Dante Connection is book 2, and FREE, in the Genevieve Lenard series, one of my favorites. It probably is my favorite, actually, because it pops into my head more often than any other book series in the last five years. The plot is great but I think it’s the awesomely quirky, super intuitive characters that have me falling in love with it. I’m even passionate about it, so much so that over the years I’ve tried to do a sell job on any reader who shows the least bit of interest.

The Dante Connection

Amazon quote:

Art theft. Coded messages. A high-level threat.

Despite her initial disbelief, Doctor Genevieve Lenard discovers that she is the key that connects stolen works of art, ciphers and sinister threats.

Betrayed by the people who called themselves her friends, Genevieve throws herself into her insurance investigation job with autistic single-mindedness. When hacker Francine appears beaten and bloodied on her doorstep, begging for her help, Genevieve is forced to get past the hurt of her friends’ abandonment and team up with them to find the perpetrators.

Little does she know that it will take her on a journey through not one, but two twisted minds to discover the true target of their mysterious messages. It will take all her personal strength and knowledge as a nonverbal communications expert to overcome fears that could cost not only her life, but the lives of many others.

********

Larkspur Cove is the BookBub bargain suggestion. The first time a Lisa Wingate book showed up for me was in 2013 and this will be the fourth one since that. I do remember reading her books, so that is a plus. Especially since it’s been three years since the last one. I’m looking forward to this read.

Larkspur Cove

Amazon quote:

Adventure is the last thing on Andrea Henderson’s mind when she moves to Moses Lake. After surviving the worst year of her life, she’s struggling to build a new life for herself and her son as a social worker. Perhaps in doing a job that makes a difference, she can find some sense of purpose and solace in her shattered faith.

For new Moses Lake game warden Mart McClendon, finding a sense of purpose in life isn’t an issue. He took the job to get out of southwest Texas and the constant reminders of a tragedy for which he can’t forgive himself.

But when a little girl is seen with the town recluse, Mart and Andrea are drawn together in the search for her identity. The little girl offers them both a new chance at redemption and hope–and may bring them closer than either ever planned.

BookRunes also has a FREE suggestion for us.

Blackbird (Amish Mountain Secrets series book 2.) I will admit – I’ve recently downloaded a 13 book mystery collection, which includes the work of Mary Alford, and have yet to read it. Her name sounds familiar though so it’s possible I’ve encountered her in other collections but have just forgotten. This one does sound intriguing.

Blackbird

Amazon quote:

Sara Hersberger thought she’d fled the nightmare of her father’s sins when she left her St. Ignatius, Montana Amish community. For ten years she’d lived in the shadow of the crimes he committed. Sought to free herself of his shadow. Now, with nowhere else to go, Sara is forced to return to her former home where the bad things her father did still haunt the families of the people he killed, including her neighbor, Hunter Troyer, who lost his wife to Amos Hersberger’s sinister games.

But Sara’s hopes at repairing her fractured relationship with the community disappear when another innocent victim is found dead near Sara’s home, the MO matching the murders from ten years earlier. The distinctive blackbird, the killer’s signature, left near the body.

The dead can’t come back to life, no matter how much Sara wants to blame her father for the mounting body count. So who is responsible for the latest string of murders, and why are they targeting Sara? With help from an unlikely ally, Hunter Troyer and Sara had better figure it out soon before the killer manages to silence Sara for good.

*******

I’m half way through my current read – Whispers of the Past – it’s still free and I think it’s  going to be my favorite of the week.

Whispers of the Past

Amazon quote:

On her last night at as owner and manager of her family’s antique business, a stranger arrives at Tessa’s doorstep with an impossible dream: find and replace a one-of-a-kind chair. Having lost more in his life than just a chair, Brian convinces Tessa to procure and restore the furnishing for his stately family home. With conflicting feelings of attraction for Brian and an embarrassment for her uncle’s dishonesty, Tessa tries to begin her life anew. But the main women in Brian’s life, his beautiful business partner Simone and his sister Darrie don’t want the complication that Tessa brings. They want the family home sold, not restored and will stop at nothing to get their way. Can Tessa do the impossible?

BookBub has a bargain for us, $0.99 is what it shows up as for me (CDN) but their email says $1.28. It will be a surprise for us all maybe.

Legacy Restored book 2 in the Legacy Series. Robin Patchen is another author to show up regularly in my TBR pile. I’m looking forward to this new read.

Legacy Restored

Amazon quote:

Angelica Rossi deserves to be behind bars, but if secretly working with the police to take down an art thief will keep her out of prison, she’s willing to take the deal—even when she discovers the thief is also a brute and a murderer. As a former con artist, she’s learned to take care of herself.

Grieving his sister’s fatal overdose, Donovan Gilcreast retreated to an eighteenth century lakeside Victorian owned by an old friend, where he works on his paintings in the mornings and restores the house the rest of the day. He blames himself for not protecting Katie, and he blames Angelica Rossi, Katie’s old friend, for introducing her to drugs years before. When Angel, the owner’s sister, moves into the house, Donovan tries to keep his distance, but her bruises pull at his protective nature. Who would hurt a tiny thing like her?

Angel has no idea why the brooding recluse hates her, but despite his glares and grunts, she finds his quiet presence comforting, especially amid the fear and confusion of working as a confidential informant.

I found an interesting bargain suggestion on Amazon, it’s for a book and author new to me. It looks like it’s worth a try at $0.99.

The Vacant House

The Vacant House

Amazon quote:

It all begins when best-selling author Sophie O’Brion is the last person to see a murder victim alive. She looks even more guilty when a woman from her church is beaten, and Sophie was seen with her just hours before. Suddenly, people she has known her entire life begin pointing accusing fingers at her.

Marine Master Sergeant Burke Maguire, an old flame who dumped Sophie years ago, has recently been hired as a police officer in Forman Falls, Texas, and is assigned her case. She doesn’t want his help.

As she gets deeper and deeper into trouble, though, she must rely on him, but trusting him is another matter.

Frozen Footprints is a thriller from last October and it’s FREE again. I have a feeling I’ve not read it yet. This is a YA and up read.

Frozen Footprints

Amazon quote:

When her twin brother disappears and a ransom note shows up, eighteen-year-old Charlene’s world is shattered. Fearing the worst, she determines to find him before it’s too late. Her quest hurls her into a twisted, frigid world of snow and ice . . . and leads to terror in an isolated cabin. Together the twins struggle for survival while enduring fierce trials of mind, body, and spirit. Devoid of all worldly comfort and consolation, will faith and hope be enough to get them through this chilling nightmare? And where is Charlene’s hero when she needs one most?

********

The Collins Case is a shorter read from last year and it is FREE again too. I think I did read this one.

The Collins Case

Amazon quote:

FBI Special Agent Julie Ann Davidson isn’t assigned the case, but she works it anyway because she knows the Collins family. Add in a baffling case of internet thievery, and Ann and her partner, Patrick Duncan, have plenty to think about.

Who took the Collins family and why?

One thing’s certain: time is running out.

If Ann and Patrick don’t work fast, Rachel Collins and her kids will die.

Friday Freebies and bargains January 24, 2020

Chautona Havig’s Friday Freebie is Vintage Wren January. It was originally published in installments and later gathered into a book. This is the first book in the whole series.

The Vintage Wren January.

Amazon quote:

The Vintage Wren is a serial novel released in several chapter episodes. Volume One contains the first four and a half episodes in one full-length novel.

Cassie Wren. Legal assistant. Convenience queen. Thrifter extraordinaire. If there was a “green police” she’d be a fugitive from eco-friendly justice.

But when a friend’s teasing feels like a challenge, Cassie accepts it. The result? One year. Twelve months. Fifty-two weeks. Three hundred sixty-five days–of green.

It seemed simple enough. Cut back on paper plates, plastic forks, and straws. Easy peasy. But when her competitive side wars against her desire for convenience, Cassie finds it’s not so easy to be “eco-friendly” and “Cassie-friendly.”

BookBub has a bargain book for us  $0.99

Shelter  I read and enjoyed this book about four years ago, it’s one of my favorites.

Shelter

Amazon quote:

She begged God to rescue her.

He said, “Go.”

So she headed out into the blizzard. In a car that wasn’t exactly hers, with a dog who wasn’t exactly a rat terrier, she drove. Until she ran out of gas in the small Maine town of Mattawooptock. Mattawoopwhat? What on earth is God thinking?

But it is there, in a weird little bathroom in a weird little church in a weird little town that Maggie Hansen finds herself. And as God would have it, she finds a lot more than that.

You will love this book because it will warm your heart. Read it today!

Hope Harbor is from another author that I enjoy, Irene Hannon

Hope Harbor

Amazon quote:

Tracy Campbell never wanted to leave Hope Harbor, Oregon, or the idyllic three-generation cranberry farm where she grew up. But life–and love–altered her plans. When tragedy strikes and changes her plans yet again, she finds herself back in her hometown with a floundering farm to run and a heartbreaking secret. Romance is not on her agenda. Nor is it on Michael Hunter’s. The visitor from Chicago has daunting secrets of his own. But when Tracy recruits him to help save a struggling charitable organization, the winds of change begin to sweep through Hope Harbor, bringing healing, hope, and love to countless lives–including their own.

I’m currently reading Hush and it is sill FREE. It’s definitely suspenseful.

It reminds me of a favorite TV show, Missing, that lasted a couple of seasons around 2003.  Here is part of the Google blurb describing it  – Jess Mastriani was a normal person who only wanted to take over her parents’ restaurant in Indiana. But that changes when she is hit by lightning, after which she begins seeing visions of missing people. Jess decides to put her newfound ability to use as a consultant to the FBI to help locate missing individuals.

The protagonist in this book wasn’t struck by lightening but has an inherited trait behind the dreams. Hopefully it will be enough to save her life. I’m only half way through the story so it will be awhile before I find out for sure. I’m guessing it will be fine, though, since we seem to go for good endings.

Maybe this book reminds me a little of TV’s Criminal Minds too.

Happy Friday reading!!

Free and bargain books January 17, 2020

BookRunes has a FREE book suggestion this morning, No Greater Love. My first response to the synopsis for this book is negative. The thought of helping someone end their life feels very uncomfortable to me. But…. I’ve read this author before and enjoyed her books. The intent expressed is one thing but maybe twists and turns will provide  surprises and this story won’t go where I expect it to. I’m going to take a chance on this story and see how it all turns out.

No Greater Love

Amazon quote:

For the most part, Kirby Shelton is content with her life. She’s building a new law practice in Colorado Springs, after losing her first in a bitter divorce, and loves to skydive in her spare time. Then she meets Leah Dalton, the computer software queen, and her world is suddenly turned upside down.

Leah, facing a losing battle with cancer, comes to Kirby with a plan to end her life on her terms. Inviting Kirby, and five of her closest friends, to her estate, she offers to make one of them a multi-millionaire. All they have to do is kill her and make it look like an accident.

It sounds like something out of the Twilight Zone, but Kirby gives into her morbid curiosity and takes Leah up on her invitation. After meeting Leah’s friends and sensing the love and dedication they have for this woman, it’s easy to assume one of them will go along with her absurd plan.

While checking out No Greater Love I found several interesting bargain suggestions from Amazon.

The first one is  Second Chance Protectors with Alexa Verde, another author I enjoy. It’s a three book collection in the Love, Faith, and Danger series,  a bargain at $1.30

Second Chance Protectors

Amazon Quote:

Book 1: Brett, Her Bodyguard

Security specialist Brett Jarvis and nanny Ashley Lamott have nothing in common—apart from both loving his twin niece and nephew. When his brother disappears, the children and their nanny are threatened. He’ll do whatever it takes to protect them and find his brother.

Book 2: Colt, Her Reunion

His ex-wife is back. And she’s the target of a serial killer.
Physical attraction and shared love for their twins weren’t enough to keep brilliant scientist Colt Jarvis and his security specialist ex-wife together last time. But when the serial killer who almost murdered Mirabella once before threatens her life, Colt will do whatever it takes to keep her safe.

Book 3: David, Her Cowboy

When rancher and disabled veteran David King finds a baby in peril, the last woman he’d expect to help is serial dater and disgraced news anchor Aster Andrades.

Well, the snow day has started, and it’s sounds like we will not be alone. This is an equal opportunity storm, sharing it’s wealth widespread. Some areas will receive three or more times what we expect. Please take care and be safe.

I’m currently reading Amish Promises, it’s early on and the jury is still out on whether I’m loving it or not. Certain forms of angst are hard for me to handle and this may be one of them. I can handle reading about tough situations, just not if the reading evokes anxious feelings. I know, that’s the whole point, to make the reader feel something. Make me laugh, I like that better. This book is still a bargain at $0.99.

Amish Promises

Amazon quote:

When Joel and Shani Beck arrive at their new home, they’re looking for peace. Shani is thrilled to have Joel back from Iraq, but he needs time to heal, and the quiet of Lancaster seems just the place. Eve Lehman has run her brother’s household ever since the death of his wife, but Tim’s a stern patriarch. Despite his protests, she’s drawn to the new neighbor, Shani, and the two begin to form a strong friendship forged on faith and family. Things seem like they’ve quieted down until Joel’s single and handsome army friend Charlie catches Eve’s attention–a man unlike any Eve has ever met. Suddenly life for both families becomes more complicated than any of them could have ever imagined.

A Stolen Heart, I think I’ve read this book in one of the many collections I’ve downloaded. This is a nice bargain at $0.99.

A Stolen Heart

Amazon quote:

From afar, Cimarron Creek seems like an idyllic town tucked in the Texas Hill Country. But when former schoolteacher Lydia Crawford steps onto its dusty streets in 1880, she finds a town with a deep-seated resentment of Northerners–like her. Lydia won’t let that get her down, though. All will be well when she’s reunited with her fiancé. But when she discovers he has disappeared–and that he left behind a pregnant wife–Lydia is at a loss about what to do next. The handsome sheriff urges her to trust him, but can she trust anyone in this town where secrets are as prevalent as bluebonnets in spring?

The Lawman Returns is a bargain at $1.99. I read and enjoyed this one in 2018 and Lynette Eason is one of my favorite authors.

The Lawman Returns

Amazon Quote:

Deputy Clay Starke has come home to Wrangler’s Corner for one reason only: to solve his brother’s murder. Denied the official resources that will help him unravel the case, Clay is forced to rely on his wits—and on the help of beautiful social worker Sabrina Mayfield. But Sabrina’s willingness to assist him soon draws her into the troubles of Clay’s past. Now both Clay and Sabrina have targets on their backs, and Clay is at risk of losing not only his heart, but also his life. Will finding his brother’s killer cost him the woman he has come to love?

One more. Between Skies ($1.31) This is an author new to me. I want to see what he is all about.

Between Skies

Amazon quote:

Everybody dies. Kate Bennett knows that. But it was never supposed to hit this close to home. Never. Horribly, she loses her forty-one year-old husband, Pete, a Pastor growing a fine church in Orlando, Florida, to a sudden heart attack.
After the funeral, Kate is faced with two realizations. She’ll have to vacate the church’s parsonage, leaving her, her two teen-aged children, and her grandmother without a place to call home. The second dilemma is far more subtle, but growing steadily. Her anger has a strange new life.
A knock on her door addresses the first issue. The second isn’t so easily solved.
Kate’s old boss, Caleb Moore, wants Kate to come back to work for him as an investigator in his bail bonds firm, something she did extremely well, but hoped she’d never have to do again. At first, she refuses, even after he explains they have an opportunity to solve a thirty-five-year-old cold case murder of three teenagers that could pay them a cool million dollars.

Happy Reading!

I was actually working on another post (a rewrite of my about page) but it’s not quite ready so we will fall back on bargain books instead. Soon.
