Free LPC Books March 18, 2020

Seven Free suggestions from LPC Books this morning, they want to make sure we have reading material while we are socially distancing ourselves with covid 19.

Murder in Disguise (A Preston Barclay Mystery Book 3)  We have seen his one before but it’s still nice to see it again.

Murder in Disguise

Fatal Transaction is also a book we’ve seen before, it was a year ago. I didn’t finish reading it. I’ll try again.

Fatal Attraction

Amazon quote:

Sara, an expert computer hacker, knows better than to trust anyone—certainly not the powerful and crooked business mogul for whom she works. But there is no future for the life of a thief. Determined to find a way out, Sara devises a scheme to double-cross her employer and steal millions through one final fatal transaction.

Midnight Is My Time also seen a year ago. I did read this one

Midnight is my time

Amazon quote:

Loner Andy Mayer is on the run from a past he cannot escape and headed into a future he cannot foresee. But along the way he meets Missy, a mysteriously gifted and blind woman, whose senses point him in the right direction. Andy and Missy need to get to Maine but it seems every force in the universe is against them. Navigating a post-apocalyptic landscape, the two fight their way north where they eventually come face to face with an enemy so powerful it will take their collective efforts to defeat it. And only then will they both realize the true purpose of their journey.

Saratoga Letters is new to me. It appears to be a dual historical USA war story.

Saratoga Letters

Amazon quote:

1777: The Battle of Saratoga, a turning point of the Revolutionary War, gives the American Continental Army its first great victory. But there seems little to celebrate for Abigail, a woman forced to tend to a wounded British soldier. While nursing William back to health, Abigail finds herself pursued by others in the enemy camp who have less than gallant intentions toward her. Fearful of who she can trust and who might betray her, she leans on her faith and God’s Providence for survival.

1977: On the anniversary of the Battle of Saratoga, thousands arrive from Europe and the United States to celebrate the event. Among the re-enactors are descendants of the original participants from both sides of the battle. One young American, Abby, meets the offspring of a British soldier. But when she finds herself almost assaulted by some men at the event, Abby turns to the only person she knows—her British ally. Can she trust him with her life? Or will he betray her in the same way loyalist spies betrayed her ancestors? Perhaps her answer lies in the letters from her ancestor and namesake, Abigail.

The Queen’s Daughters (Kate Bushnell Series Book 2) also from a year ago (for those of you following me all this time) I didn’t finish reading this one, I will give it another try.

The Queen's Daughters

Amazon quote:

Inspired by a dream, Dr. Kate Bushnell writes to Josephine Butler, famous crusader who frees women from sex slavery in Victorian England. Kate tells Mrs. Butler she is planning to travel to Great Britain. Though she she doesn’t have a cent for the journey from America, miraculously she arrives months later in London.

Once there, Kate and her friend Bess are invited to tea with Mrs. Butler. “When I read of your experiences rescuing girls in the lumber camps in Wisconsin,” Mrs. Butler says, “I thought you might be able to help us in India. We need proof for Parliament that the military entices or buys girls for the brothels on the bases.”

Kate glances at Bess. She sees a streak of fear in her eyes.

Mrs. Butler goes on, “I warn you, you would have to enter as secretly as possible. General Roberts, the commander-in-chief, would make sure you’d never enter another base again.” She pats Kate’s hand as if to soften her words. “I’m afraid this will be one of the hardest assignments you’ve undertaken.

Everlasting Light Andrea Boeshaar   another historical civil war novella

Everlasting Light

Amazon quote:

The American Civil War has ended, but Alaina McKenna still awaits news about her husband, Braeden. Did he die in a Yankee prison? Was he buried in a shallow grave on a Virginia battlefield? Or has he turned his back on the specter of death and loss around him and sought solitude west of the Mississippi River, never to return home, again?

As Christmas nears, Alaina deflects the advances of a suitor in the neighboring county, choosing to cling instead to hope and her belief that Braeden will return.

Our Heart Psalms  a new release to bring us a little comfort in this time of fear and panic.

Our Heart Psalms

Amazon quote:

Want a deeper relationship with God? Wonder how to talk to Him when you’re hurt, confused, angry—or overwhelmed with gratitude? Our heavenly Father wants us to know Him intimately. He wants us so close we can share every detail of life with Him—the agonies and ecstasies.

Our Heart Psalms explores the emotional rollercoaster of Scripture’s psalm writers, then invites you to use their patterns to create your own psalms. This interactive journal encourages you to develop an honest relationship with your Creator—who knows everything about you anyway.

Happy Reading y’all

Free and bargain books March 17, 2020

A good day this is. Two more authors new-to-me showing up this morning.

One is a FREE suggestion through 1531 Entertainment.

Kate’s Innocence (Kate’s Case Files Book 1)

Kate's Innocence

Amazon quote:

Kate watched as her campus was torn apart by bombs and now is being accused of perpetrating the crime. As the evidence quickly stacks up against her, she begins to lose hope that the truth will come to light. Even though the handsome FBI Agent, Patrick, has taken up her cause, will they be able to prove her innocence?

Browsing through her book collection, I see Sarah Holman write’s in several genres, not just mystery.

*********

While browsing, another interesting suggestion showed up as FREE. A cozy mystery this time.

Red Rover, Red Rover (The Accidental Cases of Emily Abbott Book 1)

Red Rover

Amazon quote:

He makes terrible coffee, but he sure is good in a car chase!

Emily Abbott is working hard as a coffee barista in downtown Phoenix, keeping one eye on her tiny college fund and the other on the mysterious new guy with his profound lack of coffee-making skills. Just when she thinks they might be getting the hang of working together, she’s abruptly thrust into his world of espionage and danger.

Brent Peterson, aka Agent Nighthawk, needs her help protecting a defecting enemy spy and keeping the information he carries out of the wrong hands. But she’s just a barista—what can she do?
Much more than she thinks.

Perry Elizabeth Kirkpatrick enjoys publishing short stories, judging by her book collection on Amazon. Awesome covers. I’m tempted but short stories are just not long enough.

**********

I’m currently reading Outbreak. It’s holding my attention, and I’m grateful.

Listening to all the rhetoric surrounding COVID-19, anxious feelings seem to be unavoidable even though the truth is – my lifestyle is already self-isolating and I’ve worked remotely for years. I feel relaxed about the whole situation and yet there is a low level of discomfort rippling just below the surface, making it difficult to settle down to any of my normal activities. I’m grateful for any distraction able to hold my attention.

The irony is… this story is about viral pandemics. Funnily enough, it’s not adding to my stress level. In fact, it’s doing quite the opposite. Probably because there is a scary human element involved, the protagonist is reluctantly drawn into someone else’s struggle and now his life is in danger.

Outbreak

This is still a bargain, check it out if you dare.

Happy Reading, when it’s needed more than ever before. Stay safe!

Free and bargain books March 16, 2020

The pickings are slim today. It’s not like there’s a shortage of books to choose from, there’s just a shortage of something to catch my interest. In my mind though, one or two is better than none so it’s still a good day.

BookRunes has a FREE suggestion for us, a story with depth – something that always catches my interest. It appears I have downloaded a story from this author once before but haven’t read the book. Today is a good reminder I must do that.

Broken: Macy’s Story

Broken Macy's Story

Amazon quote:

Macy’s past won’t let her forget.

Macy Elmsworth has found herself in a mess. The 18 year old pastor’s daughter got in trouble with the law, nearly died, and in the process, damaged her relationship with her family. She now needs to fulfill community service hours. As a last resort, she moves in with her grandparents, where they need a housekeeper at the small motel they own.

********

I’m currently reading Outbreak by Davis Bunn. I’ve tried starting several other books but found it difficult to stick with any of them. I’m not having that problem with this thriller. It’s still a bargain at $1.99 if you’ve not already downloaded it.

Outbreak

The waters off the West African coast are a menacing red, full of algae thick enough to stand on in places. In nearby villages, mysterious deaths start to occur–and the panic mounts. But before an alarm can be sounded, the sea currents shift, the algae vanishes, and the deaths stop. Everyone is relieved when things return to normal, and local government officials are happy to sweep the publicity nightmare under a rug.

*********

Today seems to be an off day for finding interesting books so I’m giving up the search. Tomorrow is new day. Maybe 24 hours will make the difference and the hunt will prove more successful. Although, if you’re like me, it’s not like we really need more books at the moment anyway.

In the meantime, Happy Reading!

Free and bargain books Davis Bunn

More to share on this quiet Sunday.

Best selling author, Davis Bunn, has a specially priced book suggestion for us (at $1.99). I’ve lost track of how many decades I’ve been reading and loving his books, or even how  many I’ve read. Not nearly enough, I can tell you that. His first book was published in 1990, according to Wikipedia, and there is a very long list of titles to his name (seventy-two if I counted correctly.) He also writes as Thomas Locke and that’s another eighteen novels .

Outbreak is on special right now and I’ve not read it, yet.

Outbreak

Amazon quote:

The waters off the West African coast are a menacing red, full of algae thick enough to stand on in places. In nearby villages, mysterious deaths start to occur–and the panic mounts. But before an alarm can be sounded, the sea currents shift, the algae vanishes, and the deaths stop. Everyone is relieved when things return to normal, and local government officials are happy to sweep the publicity nightmare under a rug.

An American biological researcher, Avery Madison, is dispatched by his employer to piece together exactly what happened, having long feared an ecological disaster just like this could occur. He’s had little evidence to go on before now, and what he finds in West Africa is rapidly disappearing. But Avery knows the danger hasn’t disappeared–it has just moved on.

When parts of the Caribbean start turning a familiar red right before hurricane season kicks into high gear, the implications are clear. If Avery and his colleagues can’t convince the world of what’s about to happen, toxic destruction could be loosed on American soil. Will their efforts prove too late?

********

If you are interested in trying one of his Thomas Locke stories there is a FREE title to be had today. I’ve read and enjoyed this one, back in 2016.

Double Edge (Fault Lines): A Fault Lines Story

Double Edge

Amazon quote:

Reese Clawson’s work is mind-bending–literally. Her company specializes in global data analysis for an elite group of industry executives, and now a lucrative government contract is moving her into the realm of cutting-edge intelligence gathering. She is determined to crack the limits of consciousness–and in doing so, the boundaries of secrets and lies. But her experiment crashes as test subjects slide into a coma-like state. Reese is left scrambling to maintain control, drawing three disparate people into the search for answers–an adrenaline-amped thrill junkie with altered brain chemistry, an Italian scientist working on remote-viewing technology, and a math prodigy whose algorithms subvert computer encryption.

Also FREE is an excerpt to introduce us to the Legends of the Realm series. I’ve downloaded this book in 2016. Previously, in 2015, I downloaded and read the first book in the series, Emissary, and I recall loving it. The introductory book, The Captive, is 400 pages so it is not short and I’m a little confused as to what exactly it does contain.  I’ve not read it but guess I should if I want to understand. It’s back on my TBR list.

The Captive (Ebook Shorts) (Legends of the Realm): A Legends of the Realm Story

Captive

Amazon quote:

The only remnant of Joelle’s former life is her name.
The only hint of her future is a foreboding vision of darkness.
And her only hope is a man she has yet to meet.

One of the last of a disappearing race, Joelle spends her days as a prisoner of the Long Hall, sweeping corridors and dusting scrolls while young wizards learn to ply their trade. In the dark of night, she practices the magical arts that are forbidden to one of her kind, hoping to soon break the spell that holds her captive.

But an evil is growing beyond the enchanted stone walls. Joelle will need much more than her own skills to escape it. Someone is coming for her. And when he arrives, he will change everything.

This short ebook excerpted from Emissary gives you a magical glimpse into the Realm–and the heroes who will stop at nothing to save it.

*********

Emissary (Legends of the Realm Book #1) is not a bargain but you can see what it looks like. Maybe you will want to read it anyway.

Emissary

Amazon quote:

Hyam is a likeable lad who will make a fine farmer someday. But he carries a burden few can fathom. As his mother slips toward death, she implores him to return to Long Hall, where he spent five years as an apprentice. It was there that Hyam’s extraordinary capacity for mastering languages came to light–and soon cast him into the shadows of suspicion. How could any human learn the forbidden tongues with such ease? When Hyam dares to seek out the Mistress of the Sorceries, her revelation tears his world asunder.

He has no choice but to set out on the foreboding path–which beckons him to either his destiny or his doom. An encounter with an enchanting stranger reminds him that he is part hero and part captive. As Hyam struggles to interpret the omens and symbols, he is swept up by a great current of possibilities–and dangers.

I am a fan of fantasy and this was a favorite when I read it five years ago.

*************

If you’ve not met Davis Bunn yet I think you will enjoy him, just like so many others do.

Happy Reading!

Free and bargain books March 14, 2020

Two I’m excited about, two I’m not sure about, and one was a favorite read.

BookBub has a bargain suggestion for us at $0.99. I’ve not read this book but have downloaded several other books from this author. I’ve read one of them but can’t remember what I thought of it.

Short-Straw Bride (The Archer Brothers Book #1)

Shortstraw Bride

Amazon quote:

Lighthearted Historical Romance From a Rising Star

No one steps on Archer land. Not if they value their life. But when Meredith Hayes overhears a lethal plot to burn the Archer brothers off their ranch, a twelve-year-old debt compels her to take the risk.

Fourteen years of constant vigilance hardens a man. Yet when Travis Archer confronts a female trespasser with the same vivid blue eyes as the courageous young girl he once aided, he can’t bring himself to send her away. And when an act of sacrifice leaves her injured and her reputation in shreds, gratitude and guilt send him riding to her rescue once again.

***********

Another $0.99 bargain book showed up while on my search. I’ve read three books by this author and the first chapter of this book has me wanting to read more.

The Reluctant Warrior (High Sierra Sweethearts Book #2)

The Reluctant Warrior

Amazon quote:

Union army officer Cameron Scott is used to being obeyed, but nothing about this journey to Lake Tahoe has gone as expected. He’s come to fetch his daughter and nephew, and seek revenge on the people who killed his brother. Instead he finds himself trapped by a blizzard with two children who are terrified of him and stubborn but beautiful Gwen Harkness, who he worries may be trying to keep the children.

*********

I see Code of Ethics is still a $0.99 bargain. It is high on my list of favorite reads accomplished this week.

Code of Ethics

*********

BookRunes has a FREE suggestion for us. I’ve not read this author but want to. The first few pages have me wanting more.

A Twisted Strand: A Story of Faith and Second Chances

A Twisted Strand

Amazon quote:

After dragging her heart through a divorce, Rachel Davis is ready to settle down on their South Texas country home, raise her kids, and find some peace. Can she find the secret to making her heart whole again?

William Davis, MD, would do anything to take back his horrible mistake, but infidelity is more than his wife can forgive. He goes home to an empty house in Austin every night, trying his best to be a good dad to his kids from afar.

When Rachel discovers their Jersey heifer dead from a hemorrhagic fever, she quickly realizes that the danger may spread to humans. Working for an epidemiologist, she joins the investigation. Is it natural? Or terrorism?

The family vet sickens, and Will enters the fray. Could this become an epidemic? Why was their family targeted?

*********

I’m currently reading When You Come Home but I’m not sure If I’ll get through much of it. It’s time for a change of pace, I think. Maybe laundry and a few dishes will be helpful.

When You Come Home

Things always look better after a good nights sleep. Tomorrow is another day and books will be calling my name again, I’m pretty sure.

In any event, there will be lots of reading time in the days and weeks ahead. The coronavirus has finally showed up in Manitoba and we are all being encouraged to stay home, avoiding close contact with other people. I’m glad this scare is taken seriously and these measures are being encouraged to prevent the virus spreading far and wide.

I didn’t join the current panic and storm the grocery store to load up on food and toilet paper though. I’m so glad I didn’t. Not that I need much anyway, and my TP supply is already robust. I hear it was crazy out there. I figure I’ll wait til Monday when the next freight trucks are scheduled, to renew my supply of milk and apples.  By then the rush should be over  and maybe I’ll have the store all to myself. Unless a few others have the same bright idea.

Oh, and I mustn’t forget, I need a replacement bag of chocolate chips and some furnace filters. It may even be a good time to get the oil change and tire rotation the dealership keeps reminding me about. A quiet day in the hood.

In the meantime, stay safe and….

Happy Reading!

Bargain books March 13, 2020

BookBub has a couple of suggestions for us. This first one is a bargain at $0.99. I read and enjoyed this back in the spring of 2018.

The Lost Heiress (Ladies of the Manor Book #1)

The Lost Heiress

Amazon quote:

Brook Eden has never known where she truly belongs. Though raised in the palace of Monaco, she’s British by birth and was brought to the Grimaldis under suspicious circumstances as a babe. When Brook’s friend Justin uncovers the fact that Brook is likely a missing heiress from Yorkshire, Brook leaves the sun of the Mediterranean to travel to the moors of the North Sea to the estate of her supposed family.

*********

Marrying Mandy (Brides of Clearwater Book 1) is also a bargain at $0.99. I’ve not read this one so can’t offer an opinion but I have read and enjoyed other books by this author.

Marrying Mandy

Amazon quote:

Mandy Hudson swore she’d never marry. Abandoned by her parents and raised by her grandparents, she has a hard time trusting that real love will last. When her grandmother dies, Mandy’s shocked to discover a stipulation in the will. Considering marriage to her best friend may be the only way to keep her family’s beloved bed-and-breakfast.

The loss of his job threatens Preston Yarrow’s shaky financial stability. Besides, he can’t watch his best friend give up the only real home she’s ever known. Frustrated by Mandy’s stubborn refusal to let him help, he’s certain they are stronger together than they are apart.

*********

I’m between books and plan to read this one next. There are so many choices at the moment but Lynette Eason is always a good read and an easy decision to make. It’s still a bargain at $0.99 too, a very good deal.

Code of Ethics (The Cost of Betrayal Collection)

Code of Ethics

Amazon quote:

When Detective Isaac Martinez lands in the ER with a gunshot wound, he pulls through thanks to trauma surgeon Ruthie St. John. But as the witness to a crime and possible corruption, Martinez is at risk from someone intent on silencing him–and those around him–forever. When he barely survives another attack while recovering, both he and Ruthie must flee, trying to outrun deadly killers as they search for the evidence they need to end the danger.

Happy Reading on this mostly sunny day.

Another Read & Enjoyed installment

There is a mixed bag of emotions in regard to this list of books. For the most part they held my interest and the reading went quickly. There was a need for speed reading in a few places and a little skipping of pages now and again, but not nearly as often as it has been known to happen in truly bad situations.

There is only one book in this group standing out as disappointing. Mainly because the opening had me all excited – it was so good – but then the momentum didn’t last. A strong beginning makes a slightly weak story seem even less than it might have otherwise.

Overall though, it has been a pleasing reading week.
