1531 Entertainment has an intriguing bargain suggestion written by an author I’ve enjoyed three times in the last year. In keeping with the books we’ve seen in the last couple of days this will not a light read.

There are many books on my read & enjoyed list related to World War II and yet this one is still able to catch my interest.

The Socialite

Amazon quote:

Glamour, treachery, and espionage collide when an English socialite rushes to save her sister from the Nazis.

As the daughter of Sir Alfred Whitford, Kat has a certain set of responsibilities. But chasing her wayward sister, Ellie, to Nazi-occupied Paris was never supposed to be one of them. Now accustomed to the luxurious lifestyle that her Nazi boyfriend provides, Ellie has no intention of going back to the shackled life their parents dictate for them—but Kat will stop at nothing to bring her sister home.

Arrested for simply trying to defend himself against a drunken bully, Barrett Anderson is given the option of going to jail or serving out his sentence by training Resistance fighters in Paris. A bar owner serves as the perfect disguise to entertain Nazis at night while training fighters right below their jackboots during the day. Being assigned to watch over two English debutantes is the last thing he needs, but a payout from their father is too tempting to resist. Can Barrett and Kat trust each other long enough to survive, or will their hearts prove more traitorous than the dangers waiting around the corner?

This next one was mentioned on Facebook. Everyone commenting there is raving about it as one of the best romances of the year. Reading the first few pages I can see why. One more to add to the TBR list. I need to take up speed reading. Seriously.

A Distance Too Grand (American Wonders Collection Book #1)

Amazon quote:

Meg Pero has been assisting her photographer father since she was big enough to carry his equipment, so when he dies she is determined to take over his profession–starting with fulfilling the contract he signed to serve on an Army survey of the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in 1871. What she doesn’t realize is that the leader of the expedition is none other than the man she once refused to marry.

Captain Ben Coleridge would like nothing more than to leave without the woman who broke his heart, but he refuses to wait even one more day to get started. This survey is a screen for another, more personal mission, one he cannot share with any member of his team.

As dangers arise from all sides, including within the survey party, Meg and Ben must work together to stay alive, fulfill their duties, and, just maybe, rekindle a love that neither had completely left behind.

y’all… it is taking some heavy duty self control to keep from switching current reads with each new book I find this week.

I hope you are having the same problem!

Free book September 18, 2020

BookRunes has a FREE suggestion for us and after a few pages, yup, I’m going to read it. I love how the author throws out a scrap of information then gradually builds a profile, advances the story, and captures my interest – all at the same time. I can’t wait to hear what happens next.

I can tell you one more thing. After reading the synopsis… the beginning was totally unexpected. Love it.

Of Good and Evil

Amazon quote:

Evil comes in many forms, and it isn’t always in the devil you can’t see.

Olivia O’Reilly leaves Charleston and her career as an investigative journalist behind. She finds refuge in the small town of Pine Hill, Georgia, where no one knows who she is or the mistakes she’s made. She needs anonymity as much as peace and quiet.

However, when unusual things begin occurring in the sleepy community of Pine Hill, Olivia’s innate curiosity draws her back into dangerous habits.

The old Hadley Mansion, a vacant and dilapidated eyesore, is purchased by a company called A Vital Force. This seems like a good thing. But during an uninvited visit to the house, Olivia makes a sinister discovery that sends a chill down her spine.

A suspicious gas explosion kills and injures dozens of citizens. The survival of one victim is being kept a well-guarded secret. Why?

Olivia knows she must discover the truth about what’s happening in this small town she now calls home…whatever the cost.

There have been other suggestions this morning but nothing to capture my interest the way this one book has. The standard has been set and I won’t spoil the mood by filling this list with stories not measuring up. Maybe another post can happen later on, if I happen to see another must-have.

Currently I’m reading (just started actually) one of yesterday’s great choices. We are still getting to know Gwyneth in chapter one.

One thing is already clear; the villagers don’t really know her and that doesn’t stop them from hating her.

From Across the Ancient Waters: Wales (The Green Hills of Snowdonia Book 1)

After being sent to his uncle’s estate, young Percy Drummond has no intention of letting the country atmosphere soften his rebellious ways. Then he meets a village girl, Gwyneth Barrie, and her friendship changes his life.

When Percy later returns, his intriguing friend has grown into a young woman. But by this time, Percy has caught the eye of his beautiful cousin Florilyn…who has also become Gwyneth’s friend. What will result of their threefold friendship? And what repercussions will his uncle’s surprising request have for them all?

Happy reading!

… maybe we’ll meet again a little later, you just never know.

This post has turned into an introduction to Michael Phillips, well known, eclectic, prolific author. I will admit – I’ve read and enjoyed Michael Phillips for years, decades. His stories do not qualify as light reading. But they are interesting and captivating to those who enjoy deeper subjects.

It all started with this morning’s FREE BookBub daily suggestion. I’ve read the author’s note and the first few pages and I’m hooked on this one. I don’t recall reading anything of his similar to this one so this will be a new experience for me.

Destiny Junction: Behind Every Door is a Life, and Behind Every Life is a Destiny

Amazon quote:

Destiny Junction is a small town, not unlike any other small town in America. As its name implies, however, it becomes the place where many people’s lives meet destiny.

Through one young lady’s obedient Christian life and the work of the Holy Spirit subsequent to her murder, the lives of many people in the town of Destiny Junction are transformed.

This is their story…a story about life…and what it means…or what it ought to mean.

******************

Then the – Customers who bought this item also bought – string was the beginning of the abundance coming next. Most everything from this point on is at the bargain price of $0.99 each.

First is the three book historical series American Dreams. All three of these books follow the same family as they live through the American Civil War with the freeing of slaves in the southern states. This story is not for the faint of heart. The series needs to be read in sequence to get the full story but you could pick and choose and it would still be OK.

Dream of Freedom, Dream of Life, Dream of Love

Amazon quote:

Best-selling author Michael Phillips transports readers to the South, as the seeds of Civil War are sown—and those against slavery take a stand.

In the antebellum South, Richmond and Carolyn Davidson live lives of ease as wealthy plantation owners. But even though their prosperity and livelihood depend on slave ownership, their Christian consciences speak against the practice.

When the Davidsons decide to follow their own moral conviction and God’s will by freeing their slaves, they face consequences they never could have anticipated. Risking their lives as an important link in the Underground Railroad, helping runaway slaves escape to the northern states, the Davidsons must rely on their wits—and God’s protection—to stay alive.

Next is the Secret of the Rose series set in Russia. Over the course of four books it follows the life of a single family from the 1930s pre-war Prussia to escaping divided, Berlin Wall, Germany, to America post cold war with Russia, Another story not for the faint of heart.

The Eleventh Hour, A Rose Remembered,  Escape to Freedom, Dawn of Liberty

Amazon quote:

In 1930s pre-war Prussia, Baron von Dortmann lives an idyllic life with his daughter Sabina. A devoted gardener and father, the Baron teaches his daughter powerful lessons about life, creation, and Gods love during treasured walks in the estate’s beautiful gardens.

But Sabina is growing up, and the Baron’s beloved Prussia is changing. Now a beautiful young woman, Sabina has caught the eye of a handsome young American, Matthew.

Meanwhile, a cloud is gathering on the horizon as the Nazis seize power in neighboring Germany. As he strives to protect his family and follow his own moral compass, Baron von Dortmann will face heart-wrenching decisions, with only Gods guidance to light the way.

******************

Next is the two book series The Green Hills of Snowdonia  set in Wales. This one also needs to be read in order. Judging by the reviews it will be an emotional experience

From Across the Ancient Waters, The Treasure of the Celtic Triangle

Amazon quote:

After being sent to his uncle’s estate, young Percy Drummond has no intention of letting the country atmosphere soften his rebellious ways. Then he meets a village girl, Gwyneth Barrie, and her friendship changes his life.

When Percy later returns, his intriguing friend has grown into a young woman. But by this time, Percy has caught the eye of his beautiful cousin Florilyn…who has also become Gwyneth’s friend. What will result of their threefold friendship? And what repercussions will his uncle’s surprising request have for them all?

******************

I’ve read many American Civil War stories over the years and since I don’t have a hope of reading all ten of today’s more than full length novels I’m gong to pass on the American Dreams series.

I have also read series by other authors, and maybe even this one too, set in Russia during the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s, but not nearly as many as I have of American Civil War stories. There probably isn’t much hope of me making it through all four of these 600 – 700 page books either but …. I hate to break up the set when I have a good chance to get it all. I’m sitting here thinking I may have read this Secret of the Rose series before. If that’s true I’ll be finished sooner than expected. Good deal.

I’ve not read The Green Hills of Snowdonia series and it does look interesting.

I’m going home with seven new lengthy not-light-reading books. (smile)

Happy Reading!

… on this brain foggy Thursday that feels like Friday. I’m hoping today’s rambling made sense.

Bargain books September 16, 2020

This afternoon while checking to see if I’d purchased a recently published Charles Martin book (one of my favorite authors) I stumbled across another book and decided I must read it. I’m drawn to fresh story ideas that promise interest and intrigue. This is not one of the many run-of-the-mill stories we often see.

It will also an introduction to a new-to-me author. I’m excited to read this next.

It’s at a bargain price too.

Promised Land (A Chosen People Novel Book 2)

Amazon quote:

Bestselling author Robert Whitlow explores the meaning of family and home—and how faith forms the identity of both—in this breathtaking sequel to Chosen People.

Despite their Israeli citizenship, Hana and Daud cannot safely return to their homeland because a dangerous terrorist ring is threatening Daud. Hana is perfectly fine remaining in the United States, working for a law firm in Atlanta, especially when she learns she’s pregnant. But Daud can’t shake the draw to return home to Israel, even if it makes him a walking target.

Hana is helping her boss plan a huge summit in Atlanta when Jakob Brodsky, her old friend and former co-litigator, asks for her help with a case. His client is attempting to recover ancient artifacts stolen from his Jewish great-grandfather at the end of World War II. Because the case crosses several national borders, he needs Hana’s knowledge and skill to get to the bottom of what happened to these precious artifacts.

Meanwhile, Daud is called in to help a US intelligence agency extract a Ukrainian doctor from a dangerous situation in Egypt. While overseas, he can’t resist the call of Jerusalem and thus sets off a series of events that puts thousands of people in danger, including his wife and unborn child.

*****************

My current read is not as deep and thrilling as this new book will be but it does have a fresh slant on an old story, so far anyway. I’m a third of the way through and enjoying the experience. It’s still a bargain price.

Mail Order Bride: Montana Brides and Babies

An unexpected baby can build a strong relationship. Or tear one down. Three women will soon find out if they are destined for true love or heartbreak.

A sweet western romance from #1 Bestselling author Emily Woods

Three courageous women risk everything to find love on the Western Frontier. They get more than they bargained for when babies are unexpectedly thrown into the mix. Will they have enough love for a new baby and a new husband?

The Ticket

Amazon quote:

Tray Dunaway, an ordinary teenager from a poor Southern family, longs to become part of the popular clique at school. Her mother, Evelyn, lies in bed most days with her bipolar tendency toward extreme highs or desperate lows. Meanwhile, Tray’s grandmother Ginny, still grieving over the loss of her husband, would love to move out and find a place of her own. Maybe even a bit of romance to replace the loss she feels. But given the sorry state of the family’s finances that’s not possible.

Then the Dunaways’ luck changes. Or so it seems.

Tray’s father drives a down-and-out friend of the family, Pee Wee Johnson, to Hazard, Illinois, so Johnson can buy lottery tickets. As a gesture of thanks, Johnson gives a ticket to Tray’s father. And what do you know? The Dunaways’ are suddenly rich.

When Johnson demands his cut of the winnings, Tray’s dad refuses. As Evelyn’s illness spirals toward madness, Johnson threatens the family. Now, what seems like a stroke of good fortune becomes a dangerous game of life and death for Tray Dunaway and her family.

The Widow of Rose Hill (The Women of Rose Hill Book 2)

Amazon quote:

Widowed during the war, Natalie Ellis finds herself solely responsible for Rose Hill plantation. When Union troops arrive with a proclamation freeing the slaves, all seems lost. How can she run the plantation without slaves? In order to save her son’s inheritance she strikes a deal with the arrogant, albeit handsome, Colonel Maish. In exchange for use of her family’s property, the army will provide workers to bring in her cotton crop. But as her admiration for the colonel grows, a shocking secret is uncovered. Can she trust him with her heart and her young, fatherless son?

Natalie Ellis is everything Colonel Levi Maish loathes: a Southern slave owner. When he and his men arrived in Texas with the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing slaves still in bondage despite the war having ended, he feels little concern for the trail of plantation owners left in its wake without workers. But the plight of the beautiful Widow Ellis stirs to life his compassion and the heart he’d thought cold as stone after witnessing the carnage of war. While the army camps on her land, Levi finds himself contemplating a future with Natalie and Samuel. But when he learns where her husband perished during the war, he knows a life with Natalie is impossible. How could she ever forgive him for what he’d done in battle on the banks of the Bull Run?

BookBub has a FREE suggestion for us and I see the author has the prequel in this series FREE as well. This is speculative fiction, which I do enjoy. The suggestion today is book 2 but we did see book 1 back in March. It was Vestige of Hope: (Vestige in Time Book 1.)

Vestige of Legacy: (Vestige in Time Book 2)

Amazon quote:

A woman bent on survival…
…a man haunted by his failures…
…thrown together by a tumble through time.

After running away from her foster home and surviving several years living on the streets, Samara has finally found her path in life—performing music with the hope of putting down roots. But when she is violently attacked and somehow ends up one hundred and forty years in the past, it appears her dreams for the future have once again been ripped from her.

While trekking through the Coloradan Rockies in 1879, Orlando finds a wounded woman. He questions why God would put this small, weak woman in his path. As he races to save her from the harsh wilderness bent on destroying them, he hopes his failures of the past don’t catch up to them.

If you like page-turning adventure, fascinating characters, and engaging stories of triumph, you’ll love Sara Blackard’s unique time travel series.

*****************

Then there’s the prequel

Vestige of Power: Novella (Vestige in Time Book 0)

Amazon quote:

Joseph, a man of the wilderness…

…thrown into the wilds of the city.

Born and raised in the heart of the Rockies, Joseph can’t imagine a more exciting life. But when one wrong step lands him in the alleys of an unknown city, excitement takes a new turn. Will he get his bearings in time to help a stranger whose life’s about to be threatened?

Though Victoria grew up in high society, her father encouraged her to follow her dreams. Now she wants everyone to have the same freedom she’s had. Freedom to an education, no matter your gender or social rank. Little does she realize speaking at a rally will change her life completely.

Can Joseph and Victoria look past those grasping for power around them to their true destinies or will the shadows of doubt keep them from all God means for them?

1531 Entertainment has an interesting bargain suggestion for us. The first few pages have me wanting to read further. I have not read this author but see one of her books was downloaded earlier this year. I’d better get busy and read this one.

The Silent Governess

Amazon quote:

Believing herself guilty of a crime, Olivia Keene flees her home, eventually stumbling upon a grand estate where an elaborate celebration is in progress. But all is not as joyous as it seems.

Lord Bradley has just learned a terrible secret, which, if exposed, will change his life forever. When he glimpses a figure on the grounds, he fears a spy or thief has overheard his devastating news. He is stunned to discover the intruder is a scrap of a woman with her throat badly injured. Fearing she will spread his secret, he gives the girl a post and confines her to his estate. As Olivia and Lord Bradley’s secrets catch up with them, will their hidden pasts ruin their hope of finding love?

******************

One more from 1531 Entertainment, this one FREE

The Trouble with Nancy (Gold Diggers Collection One Book 2)

Amazon quote:

Nancy Harrison has finally stepped out of her prissy box and tried to do something helpful–but did she go overboard in her first self-less act?

She can’t ride, she hates horses, and she’s terrified of being alone. What’s a girl to do?

Join the Pony Express, of course.

When Nancy Harrison’s family receives a tax bill they can’t pay, there’s only one option open to them. Her brother, Lewis, will have to join the Pony Express and earn the money that way.

It would have worked, too, if ruffians hadn’t attacked him and broken his leg.

She doesn’t want to do it, of course, but what choice is there? Lose everything or ride a stupid, smelly horse for a few weeks? Nancy decides that she’ll chop off her hair, take to the dusty overland trail, and prove that she isn’t a “flighty little thing.”

But things go from bad to worse as she discovers that riding astride is worse than sidesaddle—especially when you’re not used to it.

Can’t she just go back home to balls, teas, and the hope of a suitor before her twentieth birthday? Sans her hair, of course, because that’ll entice the fellows. Sigh.

Happy Reading!

…. to one and all.

Read & Enjoyed end of August editon

Despite a bundle of good intentions to share more often with fewer books and more comments, it hasn’t happened and the backlog is large once again. The need to clear the deck means a streamlined post is the only way to go.

There couldn’t be awesome comments about these books even if there was room or time. Most of them are forgotten once I’ve immersed myself in the next story. I do know they were all liked. Some more than others but still, all liked. I know this because, while there were some that were not well liked, they have been removed. This seemed like a strategic idea to keep me from having to guess as I share.

I feel sorry for not remembering more of the stories I read but then I think about awesome meals I’ve eaten. I don’t remember most of them either.

So here we are, in no particular order. Some may be repeats of the last read & enjoyed post as at that time they didn’t allow me to remove the download without deleting it. I guess I must read faster than the algorithm expected.

Definitely all read and enjoyed.

Northwest Counter-Terrorism Taskforce: the complete series

Having previously read book one in this series I get to go straight to book two. Very helpful when there are five books to be read. Two pages in I must say we are off to an intense start.

Happy reading….

Read & Enjoyed August 27th edition

Not by Sight (Stone River Book 2)

… is an excellent read and was one of my favorites in this batch. It was a well written, emotionally engaging story that had you rooting for the characters to rise to the challenges. Hoping they would let go of some things and embrace life. This story has some great twists and unexpected turns.

CAN YOU LOVE SOMEONE AND STILL BE FREE?

Emma Wyatt agrees to tutor a recently blinded, embittered soldier because of the $50,000 paycheck his brother offers. The job is an answer to many prayers. Blind herself, Emma dreams of independence and freedom away from her overprotective family. Tutoring Ian in all things “blind” isn’t easy, especially when the biggest challenge is not falling in love with a student who could hinder her dreams.

PROTECT SOMEONE YOU CANNOT SEE?

Good soldiers show no weakness. Ian MacGregor holds his battle with claustrophobia close to his chest, unsuccessfully trying to cope on his own. Ian knows duty, honor, serving his country. So why is he being punished with this very personalized hell?

As Ian struggles to strong-arm his phobia, his growing feelings for Emma are overshadowed by the danger lurking around them. Emma would be better off with someone else. Someone sighted.

Someone able to protect her from the person determined to keep them apart…

***********************

Seeking Home (Family Bonds Book 1)

… is another favorite read in this batch. There is a depth to this story that keeps the reader engaged. Life is not simple for either party and the invitation to come along for the ride as they figure things out is irresistible.

Sabine Radowski’s rocky childhood left her looking for a stable future for her daughter. So when the insurance payment arrives from her estranged husband’s passing, she brings her dream alive and buys a ranch. And though she’s determined never to lean on another man, she’d still appreciate the handsome former owner’s help to get things running…

Tanner Bond is plagued by the guilt of the death of his wife and daughter. Ready to flee the property that reminds him of his loss, caring for his sick grandmother forces him to put his plans on hold. But despite the new owner’s young daughter being an ever-present reminder of his burning grief, Tanner finds himself falling for the fiery widow.

As they work together, Sabine realizes the kind man deserves a place in her heart, but she worries his obvious issues with her daughter means she should forge ahead alone. And with Tanner barely resisting pressure from his family to clear out, he fears he may be about to lose the one woman who could help him heal…

Hunted (Everyday Heroes Book 1)

… is one more awesome book. A nail biter.

A new romantic suspense series by USA Today Bestselling Author Margaret Daley
Murder. On the Run. Second Chances.
Luke Michaels’ relaxing camping trip ends when he witnesses a woman being thrown from a bridge. He dives into the river to save her, shocked to find her wrapped in chains. When Megan Witherspoon’s killers make it clear they won’t stop, Luke fights to save her, but can he keep her alive long enough to find out who is after her?

There are more but we’ll save them for another day.

If you enjoy Thrillers, I happened upon an interesting Book 1 in an FBI series. I see I’ve downloaded another book by this author but haven’t read it yet so I can’t make a recommendation one way or the other. Although, I think the other one may have been recommended by a trusted source.

Snapped: A Gripping FBI Thriller (An Agent Jade Monroe FBI Thriller Book 1)

snapped

Amazon quote:

Murder happens in Houston, but when the most recent murders take on disturbing similarities, local law enforcement officers fear a serial killer is roaming their streets.
Former sheriff’s department sergeant Jade Monroe has just graduated from the FBI’s serial crimes unit in homicide and is called to Houston with her partner, J.T. Harper, to take on her first assignment—apprehending the person responsible for these gruesome crimes.
With victims piling up and the clock ticking, Jade and J.T. need to intensify their search because there’s no sign the killer is slowing down.
After a late-night epiphany while she’s alone, Jade suddenly comes face to face with the killer, and now Jade is missing. The clock continues to tick—but this time it’s for her.

Another thriller. This is a new series featuring Riley Paige prior to her FBI series. As a recommendation: I’ve downloaded more than a dozen of Pierce’s books and read & enjoyed two thirds of them of them. He has a number of other series going as well.  Prolific.

Watching (The Making of Riley Paige—Book 1)

Watching

Amazon quote:

WATCHING (The Making of Riley Paige—Book One) is book #1 in a new psychological thriller series by #1 bestselling author Blake Pierce, whose free bestseller Once Gone (Book #1) has received over 1,000 five star reviews.

22 year old psychology major—and aspiring FBI agent—Riley Paige finds herself in a battle for her life as her closest friends on campus are abducted and killed by a serial killer. She senses that she, too, is being targeted—and that if she is to survive, she must apply her brilliant mind to stop the killer herself.

When the FBI hits a dead end, they are impressed enough by Riley’s keen insight into the killer’s mind to allow her to help. Yet the killer’s mind is a dark, twisted place, one too diabolical to make sense of, and one that threatens to bring Riley’s fragile psyche crashing down. In this deadly game of cat and mouse, can Riley survive unscarred?

I wasn’t planning on more books today but can’t possibly give up the chance of more when it appears out of the blue like that.

Read and Enjoyed – Middle of August edition

It’s time to share some read & enjoyed with you on this grey and stormy summer day. It feels like the only right thing to do this afternoon is curl up with a fluffy blanket and a good book. That’s my goal when this is done and posted. I have to admit it’s taking a great deal of self-discipline to stay away from my current read.

Several times I mentioned my opinion about this book, Love’s Prayer would be a thought provoking read. It was. A thoughtful treatment of suicide, depression, and addictions. Hope was the goal and it worked. It’s still FREE if you are interested.

Love’s Prayer: A Heartwarming Journey of Faith, Hope & Love (First Street Church Romances Book 1)

Love's Prayer

Ben Davis has lived in the shadow of his family’s mistakes for years. Forced to give up all his dreams, he wonders if death by his own hand might be the only way out. A desperate plea sent to the God he isn’t even sure he believes in is soon answered by a series of miracles that bring Summer and Ben crashing into each other.

Summer loves the busy life of the city, but agrees to spend the season in Sweet Grove, running her aunt’s flower shop while figuring out what to do with her life after. One thing’s for sure, she’s a terrible florist. Luckily, her latest mishap leads her to a man with pleading, soulful eyes she’s all too happy to get lost in.

***************

This next one was also a favorite.

Cowboy Father: The Cowboys (Glory, Montana Book 5)

Cowboy father

Adele is the eldest Kinsley daughter. She’s always been the responsible one. Even when her marriage fell apart and she found out her husband was a thief. When her husband is killed in the midst of a robbery, she flees to Glory, Montana with her year old son, hoping to escape her past and her dead husband’s partner. She never expected to meet Ethan, a single father to two orphaned children.

Ethan’s boss lost a considerable amount of money in the last heist and has offered Ethan a generous reward if he recovers it. He suspects Adele and needs to get close to her to discover what she did with the money. But the closer he gets, the more he falls for the lovely widow.

Runaway Tide was not easy to put down. It was apparent something wasn’t adding up right but it was hard to say just what or why. I like that. Unpredictable.

Runaway Tide (Sea Glass Inn Book 2)

Runaway Tide

Unflappable Meg finds herself at a crossroads when ex-flame, Jackson Riley, becomes her boss.

Meg had made a promise to Jackson’s late father to stay working for the chain of Sea Glass inns, but how can she now?

After years away, Jackson seems to have something to prove to his family … and to Meg. But after mounting conflicts with one of Jackson’s family members bubble over, Meg must decide if her long-ago promise is worth keeping.
