Today is Sadie Hawkins Day! The one day (according to folklore) when a woman can propose to the unmarried man of her choosing. Of course she has to catch him first, and there will be a stiff penalty if he refuses. A silk dress or maybe a nice pair of gloves. It’s a good thing it only comes round once every four years.

Most of the single men I know live in books, so there is that. Maybe we’ll notice an awesome man we could dream of asking today, in one of our spectacular finds.

The Runaway is an interesting FREE suggestion from BookRunes, although I’m not sure if we will feel the need to propose while reading it. Maybe, I guess anything is possible. The series is called Legacy of Love.

The Runaway: A Legacy of Love Novel

The Runaway

Amazon quote:

Anna Brent, a Quaker woman in Indiana, secretly hides runaway slaves in her home on the Underground Railroad. When her work is threatened, can she turn to the outspoken newspaper editor, a man she barely knows, to ensure the safety of the slaves so dear to her? Will she and Daniel risk everything to help these fugitive slaves remain free?

“A compelling historical romance intricately woven with suspense, page-turning tension, and tender glimpses into a passionate young heroine’s heart. Melanie Dobson’s strong storytelling skills will have you glued to the pages of this intensely satisfying book.” -Miralee Ferrell, author of The Other Daughter

This bargain book  ($1.32) showed up for me five years ago and while the story is a little murky in my mind I do remember liking this great author. I’m feeling rather tempted to reread this mystery.

I don’t think this one will be inspiring us to propose today either, although you never know. Love can pop up in the most unusual of places, especially if you like tough lawman types.

The Demise (A Braxton Mystery Book 1)

The Demise

Amazon quote:

Tiny Braxton, Tennessee, is a quiet, tight-knit community wrapped around an old town square just a stone’s throw from Nashville. But when the town’s most prominent citizen is found dead at the base of its water tower, news of Peter Lanham’s apparent suicide roars through town like a massive tsunami.

Peter, the handsome, beloved CEO of Lanham’s Fine Foods, had taken a small, family-owned grocery store founded in 1927, and grew it into a successful national chain. With most of Braxton’s residents employed by Lanham’s corporate headquarters, word of Peter’s demise left them searching for answers. What could possibly have made him take a swan dive off that tower?

Julie Parker is convinced he didn’t. As receptionist at Lanham’s executive office suite, she’s determined to find out what really happened to her boss. An aspiring actor who also stars as “The Lanham Girl” in the company’s TV commercials, Julie prides herself on her perceptive observations and people-skills. Who better to find out what happened to Peter up on that water tower?

Matt Bryson, on assignment as a rookie Special Agent for the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, isn’t about to let the attractive receptionist intrude on his first case. She may be a hometown insider, but he’s perfectly capable of solving the case without “Miss Marple” screwing up his investigation.

I’m currently reading Above the Fold and while it’s a good story I’m not feeling the urge to propose to anyone. There’s too much tension and drama to incite warm fuzzy feelings with dreams of love.

Above the Fold

Above the Fold

Amazon quote:

After losing the love of her life to a big city journalism job, Elissa Tillman pours herself into the suffragette movement and her secretarial work helping keep her father’s Pittsburgh newspaper afloat.

Cole Parker returns to the steel city with the phantom failures of his past nipping his heels. All he asks of the future is a second chance with the woman he once spurned.

The murder of a millionaire offers the perfect chance for Elissa to prove to her father and the world that she’s a serious journalist. But there’s a catch—she has to compete for the story. Against none other than Cole Parker, the very man who shattered her heart.

Well, I guess that was a bust. Anyone feeling tempted to propose on this Sadie Hawkin’s Day? Me neither. I do feel like reading one of these books though.

Happy Reading

… on this warmish day half way through winter. It’s warmed up to -1c, for the next while hopefully. It’s overcast today but the past few days have been sunny enough to melt wherever it touches. The snow banks on the street are looking brown and dirty with sand but hey, we’ll take it. Not a bad day for chasing down a single man.

Read, and Free books February 28, 2020

A couple of great books are still FREE, if you hurry.

I finished reading Diamond in the Rough and I loved it. The story completely drew me in, but the thing I loved most was the humor. Jen Turano has a gift for funny one liners and hilarious situations that will leave you laughing out loud. It makes me smile just thinking about the experience.

Guess what else! I’ve inadvertently figured out how to include the links. Awesome.

Diamond in the Rough (American Heiresses Book #2)

Diamond in the Rough

Ill-equipped to handle the intricacies of mingling within the New York Four Hundred, Poppy becomes embroiled in one hilarious fiasco after another, doomed to suffer a grand societal failure instead of being deemed the diamond of the first water her grandmother longs for her to become.

Reginald Blackburn, second son of a duke, has been forced to travel to America to help his cousin, Charles Wynn, Earl of Lonsdale, find an American heiress to wed in order to shore up his family estate that is in desperate need of funds. Reginald himself has no interest in finding an heiress to marry, but when Poppy’s grandmother asks him to give etiquette lessons to Poppy, he swiftly discovers he may be in for much more than he bargained for.

Two bargains showing up as a bonus while window shopping.

Diamond in the Rough, a bargain at $0.99. We’ve seen a number of awesome books from Jen Turano and this one sounds like it will be a fun read too. There is a good chance this could be next on my TBR list.

Read and Enjoyed February 24, 2020

My favorite book today is Egypt’s Sister by Angela Hunt, one of my long time favorite authors. This story is based on historical fact with a fictional character tying it all together.

Young Chava and her princess friend grow up together becoming fast friends. Accompanying her scholarly father to the palace everyday, Chava receives an extraordinary education right alongside her friend. Learning skills that will save her life in the future yet to come.

Over the years their friendship deepens and, as young teens do, they pledge themselves as blood-sisters. They will always be there for one another.

Invariably, the way life does, things change and move on. The princess becomes queen, Cleopatra, with new friends, and enemies. Eventually even friends become enemies and Chava is left wondering why.

This story was captivating and very well written. Finishing it was not a problem, I was sad to see it end.

This is still a bargain at $0.99

I’ve just started Sentence of Marriage. I keep seeing this in the FREE section and just now realize it’s been downloaded since 2012 and I’ve not read it. Not sure why. I’ll try again and see how it goes. This may be one I find a little too dark to handle.

Sentence of Marriage 2012

Amazon quote:

“I won’t have her forced,” Jack said. “Let her decide for herself.”

Amy knew her father meant it. She could say no if she wanted. But this marriage would make everything all right. They could put all the trouble she had caused behind them. Everyone would be happy again.

Everyone except her.

“Sentence of Marriage” is the first book in the three-volume “Promises to Keep”.

In nineteenth century New Zealand, there are few choices for a farm girl like Amy. Her life seems mapped out for her by the time she is twelve. Amy dreams of an exciting life in the world beyond her narrow boundaries. But it is the two people who come to the farm from outside the valley who change her life forever, and Amy learns the high cost of making the wrong choice.

Bargain books February 22, 2020

BookBub has a bargain suggestion for us today at $0.99. This book showed up for us last summer and I can remember really liking it.

The Red Door Inn (Prince Edward Island Dreams Book #1)

The Red Door Inn

Amazon quote:

Marie Carrington is running from a host of bad memories. Broke and desperate, she’s hoping to find safety and sanctuary on Prince Edward Island, where she reluctantly agrees to help decorate a renovated bed-and-breakfast before it opens for prime tourist season.

Seth Sloane didn’t move three thousand miles to work on his uncle’s B&B so he could babysit a woman with a taste for expensive antiques and a bewildering habit of jumping every time he brushes past her. He came to help restore the old Victorian–and to forget about the fiancée who broke his heart.
The only thing Marie and Seth agree on is that getting the Red Door Inn ready to open in just two months will take everything they’ve got. Can these two wounded souls find hope, healing, and perhaps a bit of romance on this beautiful island?

********

The Vacant House (Sophie O’Brion Mysteries Book 1) is still a bargain at $0.99. I liked this one a lot too.

The Vacant House

Amazon quote:

She knows she didn’t do it, but everybody thinks she did.

It all begins when best-selling author Sophie O’Brion is the last person to see a murder victim alive. She looks even more guilty when a woman from her church is beaten, and Sophie was seen with her just hours before. Suddenly, people she has known her entire life begin pointing accusing fingers at her.

Marine Master Sergeant Burke Maguire, an old flame who dumped Sophie years ago, has recently been hired as a police officer in Forman Falls, Texas, and is assigned her case. She doesn’t want his help.

I’m excited to see Angela Hunt has a bargain book out right now. She has been one of my favorite authors for decades. $0.99 is a really good deal for one of her books. There are other similar books in this series and I can’t recall if I’ve read any of them. I don’t think so – though I’ve read similar books. I’m looking forward to this.

Egypt’s Sister (The Silent Years Book #1): A Novel of Cleopatra

Egypt's Sister

Amazon quote:

Five decades before the birth of Christ, Chava, daughter of the royal tutor, grows up with Urbi, a princess in Alexandria’s royal palace. When Urbi becomes Queen Cleopatra, Chava vows to be a faithful friend no matter what–but after she and Cleopatra have an argument, she finds herself imprisoned and sold into slavery.

Torn from her family, her community, and her elevated place in Alexandrian society, Chava finds herself cast off and alone in Rome. Forced to learn difficult lessons, she struggles to trust a promise HaShem has given her. After experiencing the best and worst of Roman society, Chava must choose between love and honor, between her own desires and God’s will for her life.

********

I found another bargain book, by an author unknown to me. I’ve read similar books to this one, but they were definitely not the same. I can’t make a recommendation at this point but I do plan to read it to see if I like it as well as I liked the others. This would fall in the Metaphysical Fiction category.

Adam’s Reign (The Hidden Kingdom Book 1) $0.99

Adam's Reign

Amazon quote:

Take a leap of faith into a world unlike any you have ever known, one where mankind still remembers its foundations and all the earth is clothed in perpetual springtime. Here, angels and demons wage war for the souls of mankind, and man lives for hundreds of years, forever growing either in righteousness or in evil. In these days, there are few who acknowledge where they have come from, few who keep hold of the one true God who wrought the world. For those who do, the blinders are ripped off and they see the truth: a world at war. Tucked just behind the veil of sense experience, battles rage and captives are taken as kingdoms collide and man is caught in the middle, a part of the struggle but unaware of his role.

********

The last two books will not be quick reads. I think it will be a deep and thought provoking experience, for both of them.

It’s always a good day when we find reads that break away from the usual. Today is a good day.

One last bargain ($1.32 CDN), I couldn’t resist. It doesn’t look like all the rest and that has me hopeful. We have seen this author before, though.

Today’s abundance makes up for the slime pickings of yesterday, which is very nice.

My current read was More Than Meets the Eye but I left it for Gotta Have Faith. Hopefully I’ll finish one of them, not sure yet if that’s gonna happen.

The offerings today are a little disappointing, the lack of offerings – more specifically, but tomorrow could be better. It’s always a pleasant surprise when awesome new books show up for us.

In the meantime Happy Reading! on this chilly winter day. It’s currently – 27c and feels like – 42c with the wind chill. We have an Extreme Cold Warning for most of our province of Manitoba while the sun is shining, the skies are blue, and a couple of birds were seen flying over the neighbors roof. A beautiful sparkly day. A perfect time to stay inside and enjoy the warmth of the sunshine streaming in the windows.
