Bargain books – Mystery – July 07, 2021

So this is part two, with mystery collections featuring new-to-me authors. I’m sure I’ve met some of them before, just not all of them.

I’m short on time tonight so haven’t investigated as much as normal, it will be a surprise.

The other thing in favor of this many new reads – they are all short. It shouldn’t take long at all to work our way through them.

Deadly Chances: Five romantic suspenses where couples outrace danger and take a chance on love

DANGEROUS VICTORY
Car mechanic Valerie watched her father die in a fiery wreck and she can’t admit to herself that she’s in love with a Nascar race car driver Jackson, especially after he’s also injured in a crash. But when a stranger shows up, terrorizing her about a mysterious delivery from her uncle, Jackson is the only one who can navigate the danger with Valerie. It’s a race for survival, and a high speed adventure in love.

LOCAL BETRAYAL
A MURDERER IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINK

Kennedy Bradford returns home to come to grips with the violent death of her parents and witnesses a murder.
Dylan Lockhart, best-selling mystery writer, is roped into being Kennedy’s bodyguard until the killer is found.

Neither one had time for romance. Both secretly yearn for love. Danger thrusts them into a fight of survival that may be the end of a future together.

CALL ME JANE

With Officer Kyle Rossi’s help, Jane, as she prefers to be called, begins the journey to discover her identity. But the more she learns about the real Aubrey Sutherland, the more she realizes she can’t trust anyone, especially those closest to her, but Jane also learns that a concussion might be the best thing that ever happened to her.

SUNSHINE IN SPRING
Camden Daye used to love Christmas. Six years ago, tragedy struck his family. Every year since then, he hangs on to the past and his role in the devastation that shook up the world of his loved ones. Can he be free of the self-imposed chains, or will they hold him in bondage?
Sunshine Rogers is being stalked. By whom, she has no idea and can’t understand why anyone would do it. Fear begins to take over her life as she constantly looking over her shoulder.

THE FACE OF INSANITY
Kelsey Reed, white collar crime’s favorite forensic accountant, finds the fraud behind the false front of numbers. When she takes a job in the Pacific Northwest, she’s stalked at the Portland airport; her hotel room is ransacked; and her life is threatened by a gunman.

During the snowstorm of the century, Kelsey disappears. Between Jack Hopper – the attorney that hired her and falls in love with her, and Tee Boone – PI extraordinaire, she is found.

Tightrope

EYE OF THE STORM

With Brady’s help, Kate is about to face the showdown she’s been expecting for a long time, when the enemy coming after her proves to be closer than Kate could ever imagine.

HARD COUNTRY
Is blood thicker than West Texas dust? Johnny’s broken his sister’s heart too many times to count, but with one tug of her heartstrings, CJ braves Texas heat in a last-ditch effort to save big brother. When Yankee stubbornness butts heads with cowboy arrogance, CJ has a better chance getting answers from her horse than the men on the ranch. She knows she’s rubbing elbows with a murderer. She’s in over her head, and the bodies are adding up. Will she be next?

THE LONG WAY HOME
A kidnapping and vicious murder leave David Maguire and Jada Atwood with few options—remain in the clutches of their abductors or attempt an escape. But the attraction they discover for each other could change their lives. Will they find their way home or die in a Pennsylvania forest?

SMALL TOWN INJUSTICE
Brody has known love, and the loss of that love through death. He can’t risk another such loss. He doesn’t count on the lovely cop who sends his heart into a tailspin.

Can these two find justice for their murdered friend, conquer their fear of loving again and have a happily ever after together?

SHARP AS STEELE
A too handsome for his own good private investigator.
A stalker who claims she is his.
A new job turns deadly.
A final confrontation could end it all.
Can Lana and Lance out run a man filled with an insane desire to claim Lana as his own?

THE WRONG SUITCASE
Regina Larson cannot believe she’s finally in Israel after years of saving for this trip. She can’t wait to walk in the footsteps of the biblical heroes she’s read about all her life. Now places like the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea won’t just be words on a page. And what better place to receive God’s calling than Israel? Reggie feels sure God will meet her here. But when she discovers that she’s grabbed the wrong suitcase at the airport, and the owner of the bag accuses her of stealing something of value from it, this trip of a lifetime—this pilgrimage—becomes a race for her life.

*******************************

I think I’ve read some of these books before, in other collections. Like for instance, the last book here. The Wrong Suitcase. I can distinctly remember this story.

It must have been good if I can still remember.

Normally, I prefer longer reads but with the way life is right now, my mind on other tasks, shorter is better. Kind of like reading a magazine when there isn’t much time to really get into a story.

Happy Reading!

Bargain books – Romance – July 07, 2021

Random browsing worked tonight, a very good thing because I needed something to talk about. The search had a beginning point, it didn’t produce for me but thankfully the suggestion strips attached to the search bore fruit.

It was fortuitous. The book I’m currently reading gave me ideas. The protagonist was spending time with a book and in describing the scene the author’s name was mentioned. Of course, I had to check it out to see if this person was real. She is and it turns out we read two of her books last year.

I’ve noticed name dropping of real authors and their books, happens often these days. And why not? It’s a perfect opportunity.

Anyway, my search yielded four collections, two romance and two mystery. That’s too many books for one post. so two it is.

This is a chance to meet more new authors. That’s probably the biggest reason for selecting these books.

Happily Ever After: Retellings of classic Fairy Tales

Contemporary and historical romances where men were princes and women were the princesses who loved them.

RED AND THE WOLF
Fellow reporter Wolf Skinner has designs on Lilly and would like to take Hunter’s place as Lilly’s boyfriend. But his reasons are less than honorable. When Lilly gets lost in the forest and must climb a tree to escape a ferocious bear, which of these gentlemen will be her hero?

When Lance throws a barn dance, Cindy is determined to have one night with him that will carry her through the rest of her life. Can she set aside prejudices from a bygone time and embrace her happily ever after?

RAPUNZEL’S LIGHTHOUSE
Georgie and Colby have both had their share of disappointments and heartache. Just as Georgie is beginning to open up to him, a letter she finds threatens to shut her down again. Can their shared desperate need for a home bring them together?

BETTER TO SEE YOU
Visiting her ailing grandmother in the fairytale-like German town, Lucy Blair plans to be a caregiver during her grandma’s illness and attend the world-renowned theater production of the Passion of Christ. What Lucy did not plan was to run into her old college boyfriend, Ron Woodson, who is in Germany to learn woodcarving for his furniture making business. Will their meeting rekindle the old flame or will the past smother the new spark?

JUST RIGHT ROMANCE
When Goldie Portman finds out her high school friend Cecelia wants to stage her high profile wedding to a senator’s son at Goldie’s Little Woods Inn, she is sure her prayers have been answered. She doesn’t count on the presence of Cecelia’s brother Justin, Goldie’s high school nemesis, and the proud owner of three rascally dogs nicknamed “the bears.” As the wedding details spiral out of control, the local media does their best to crash the event and another ghost from Goldie’s past arrives to add to the chaos. Sparks fly and there just may be a “happily ever after” if Goldie can manage the mayhem and deliver a wedding that’s just right for everyone.

CHARITY AND THE SEVEN SISTERS
Tragedy can bring them together or tear them apart…..
Rhett Lincoln loved Montana and everything his father left him on the biggest ranch in Hope, Montana. Upon returning home, he finds the one person he loves the most on the brink of death. His life turns upside down until he realizes his need for a wife. Will he find love in Hope, Montana?

BIRDS AND BREADCRUMBS
If you’ve ever wondered what happened to that little boy and girl after the gingerbread house encounter, here’s what you’ve been missing. Birds and Bread Crumbs is the “rest of the story”—a grown-up Midwestern American fairy tale with just enough magic to make you believe in once-upon-a-time and happily-ever-after again.

These books are less than full length and should be relatively fast reads.

Enjoy while meeting a few more authors.

Perfect timing

It’s amazing how it happens. Perfect timing.

Yesterday’s post shared the idea of counselling in a book. Check it out here if you missed it… Love is a Choice

This morning, waiting in my inbox, was the regular email notification for the weekly podcast I follow faithfully. The content is always interesting and helpful, on a variety of topics. Today’s topic was especially meaningful on the heels of yesterday’s book. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect, the two books fit so well together.

The subject line of the email was an attention grabber.

A specific type of writing that will combat anxiety, depression, and symptoms from past trauma.

There was no way I could walk away from this podcast and leave it for another day. It had to be today. I watched it twice, it was packed that full. .

Today’s interviewee has written a book called The Power of Writing it Down.

Part of author/writing coach Allison Fallon’s target audience is the same crowd flocking to read Love is a Choice... Count me in.

The Power of Writing It Down: A Simple Habit to Unlock Your Brain and Reimagine Your Life

Partial Amazon synopsis:

For anyone who’s trying to make sense of their life, who wants to get unstuck from the patterns that hold them back, hear this incredible news: everything you need for the freedom you want is entirely within reach. This practice and pathway is free, it’s readily available every day of your life, it takes just minutes of your time, and anyone can do it.

Author, writing coach, and speaker Allison Fallon’s life transformed when she discovered the power of a daily writing practice. As it turns out, using your words is one of the most powerful means you have for unlocking your life. The Power of Writing It Down is your guide to this transformative tool available to us all. In as little as five to twenty minutes a day, scientific research shows this daily practice can help you:

  • Identify your ruts and create new neurological grooves toward better habits
  • Find fresh motivation and take ownership of your life
  • Heal from past pain and trauma
  • Relieve anxiety and depression
  • Contextualize life’s setbacks and minor frustrations
  • Live a more confident, balanced, and healthy life
  • …and so much more

***********************

In the podcast interview she explains Expressive Writing well and mentioned that the writing talked about in her book is not regular writing and it’s not journaling. It makes a lot of sense.

The idea is to write down your deepest thought and feelings. I have experienced what she means when she says this type of writing accesses the subconscious part of the brain where the conscious is often not allowed.

This is basically what I do when I write my this and that posts. What comes out is often a surprise. With some of the posts, like I mentioned at the time of writing them, I was in the midst of angst and felt so much better when I was talked out. To really get into it, though, I expect most of it would not be something we’d want to share publicly.

I recommend listening to the interview before reading the book. I’m glad I did because hearing and seeing her will make the words on the page that much more real.

Practicing this form of writing will be helpful to everyone, not just the most broken among us.

Here is the link. Enjoy, and buy the book if it makes sense to you. I think you will be glad you did.

I haven’t been as intentional with this type of writing as is encouraged in her book. From ignorance, really. I want to try it her way, to see what the difference will be in my life.

I’m hoping you will discover this along with me.

Happy listening, reading, and writing.

A helpful resource – professional counselling in book form

The level of professional counselling we need is sometimes not easily found. That was the case for me a decade or two ago and this book was a life saver. It was written as a joint effort by the Minirth/Meir group, both of them psychiatrists, joined by a third person, a psychologist.

The book starts off talking about codependency. That’s not the way I remember it from my first reading. It’s funny how that goes. The parts I remember are the ones explaining what happened to me, how it has affected me, and the broken way I do life as a result. Understanding opened many life changing doors in my thinking.

Of all of the many books I’ve read this one was the most comprehensive and impacting. It was written to be a counselor to those without access to one. It covers the subject well enough to be a textbook written in layman’s terms.

I’ve shared this book here before but feel inspired to share it again.

I was speaking with a long time friend today, catching up on our lives and families. Stuff happens in our families and sometimes there is brokenness left undiscovered for decades.

I’ve been thinking about our conversation for most of the day and tonight remembered about this book that could be helpful in their situation. So, this is for my friend, to share as she sees fit.

It’s for you too (as reader) if this would be helpful in your life.

One more comment. I remember interpreting the title and certain phrases in the synopsis in a negative way.

Reality was nothing like my expectations. Supportive, kind, understanding, helpful; these are all words I would use to describe the experience. And, validation.

Love Is a Choice: The Definitive Book on Letting Go of Unhealthy Relationships

Amazon quote:

Let go of unhealthy relationships with the book that more than 850K people have trusted.

Best-selling doctors, Hemfelt, Minirth, and Meier, walk you through their ten proven stages to recovery from codependency that results from external circumstances.

Humans are susceptible to codependency because of our sinful tendency to use defense mechanisms to fool ourselves. In codependent relationships, deceitful games are played, and important Christian principles are often taken out of context and abused.

God wants us to have healthy relationships with a balance between being dependent and independent. The doctors describe how the most effective means of overcoming codependent relationships is to establish or deepen a relationship with Christ Himself.

They describe the causes of codependency, pointing out the factors that perpetuate it, and lead readers through their ten stages of recovery.

Continue a deeper study with the Love Is a Choice workbook, available separately.

**********************

Read this prayerfully with a surrendered heart and mind. I say this because our defense mechanisms can have us locked up so tight that helpful thoughts cannot penetrate the armor we have going on. Work on wanting to know. Work on believing there is hope, and that you are worth so much more than what you’ve been told.

The suggestion strip has an interesting mystery from another author I’ve not seen before.

This and that – July 04, 2021

Happy Independence Day to all my American friends, relatives, and fellow bloggers.

It’s a warm one today and has been for a number of days already. The humidity makes it feel like a warm bath out there. The forecast says the heat will be hanging around for several more days and I’m savoring it as much as possible. It sure beats the cold.

My favorite thing about warm is not having to wear layers upon layers.

I like washing my own car and today was the day. I waited for evening and shade for the car and then made sure to accidentally splash a little water my way every once in a while. Lookin’ much better.

Other than that it has been a quiet weekend, too warm to spend much time working in the yard. It was perfect for an afternoon nap yesterday out on the deck. Reading was on the agenda but the eyes just would not stay open.

Actually, this week I have been out and about, off the property, more than I have in many months. Shopping and running errands mostly, catching up on back burner things. The highlight of the weekend shopping spree was two new t-shirts. The first since before covid.

I’m thinking after two years without new clothes, some of my things will need to be retired. Actually truth be known, it’s probably closer to four years since the last new clothes entered my closet. How can you tell shopping is not one of my favorite activities.

I think my last pre-covid purchase was a pair of winter boots with retractable studs for those unexpected slippery places. They have low heels on them too so they have taken over as my go-to winter boots. Haven’t had to use the studs yet though. Thankfully.

It’s time for a late small meal before lights out. Maybe I will settle on a new read as I enjoy a nice warm bowl of oatmeal. I do have a current read that will probably be rushed through. I’m not thrilled about it and can’t decide if I should bother finishing.

I am tempted to check out yesterday’s mystery download.

Amazing, it is still at the bargain price.

Oath of Honor (Blue Justice Book #1)

Police officer Isabelle St. John loves her crazy, loud, law-enforcement family. With three brothers and two sisters, she’s never without someone to hang out with–or fight with. With her dead partner’s handsome homicide detective brother Ryan shadowing her every move, Izzy’s head is spinning. How can she secure justice for her partner when doing so could mean sending someone she loves to prison? I hope your weekend was as restful as mine and that you’ve found some good books to read.

Have a great week.

One more for today July 03, 2021

OK, so I’m so sorry to be posting for the third time today but I stumbled upon another Lynette Eason book at a bargain price and I just couldn’t pass it up. Bargain prices do not last long for popular authors so we can’t afford to hold off on posting this until tomorrow either.

I should also share I’ve read and enjoyed book 2 in this series and now I’m looking forward to book 1

In case you have trouble seeing my second post today I’ll add the link here. It was a scheduled post and I didn’t notice the PM switched to AM at the last minute which put it ahead of the first one. Not at all what I had in mind

Oh well, stuff happens sometimes 🙂

Happy Reading…

I’ll try to stay away from book searches for the next while, wouldn’t want to hazard the chance of a 4th post.

It’s Saturday though, maybe you don’t mind a third post today.

Enjoy anyway!

BookBub has a bargain suggestion for us.

When a synopsis is long, I use part of it, normally. In this case I’m liking it as is. It’s very long but it’s good and I’m using it. Maybe there won’t be any other books and we will be happy to have had something to read in this post.

I’ve downloaded 8 of this author’s books and read all of them. That’s a good sign right there but a great synopsis is an even better sign.

Still the One (Deep Haven Collection Book 1)

Amazon quote:

The last thing he wants to do is return home.

Cole Barrett, former Army Ranger, has a new mission objective. Sell his grandfather’s house and put Deep Haven in his rearview mirror as fast as possible. Deep Haven holds the hurts of physical abuse at the hands of his grandfather, a man now in a memory care facility with dementia. Recently divorced, single, and unattached, Cole just wants a new life as a US Marshal. One where he can forget the past and start new.

Unfortunately, there’s a tenant in the garage apartment who’s refusing to move. Even worse? It’s his childhood crush, Megan Carter, and her son.

She’s waited years for her first love to return.

Wedding planner and single mom Megan Carter is no stranger to Deep Haven. To her, it’s the place where she makes dreams come true—at least, everyone else’s. Her big dream is to purchase the Black Spruce Bed & Breakfast to turn it into a premier event venue and, if she can stay booked for enough weddings over winter, she’ll have enough money to buy the inn, move out of Grandpa Barrett’s garage apartment, and finally give her nine-year-old son, Josh, the life he deserves. After using part of her intended down payment to cover his hockey fees, she’s behind on her Black Spruce funds and only has thirty days to come up with four thousand dollars.

Still, she’s oh, so close…until her childhood friend-slash-crush, Cole Barrett, returns to Deep Haven. Unfortunately, he’s not back to fulfill a silly childhood promise to marry her, but she never expected him to evict her! The last thing she needs is more expenses. Or for another man to walk into her heart…and break it.

Maybe it’s never too late to finish a love story…

When a blizzard strikes Deep Haven, and Megan is overrun with wedding catastrophes, it takes a former Ranger to step in and help. But the more he comes to her rescue, the sooner she’ll be able to move out…and he can move on.

And that’s what they both want, right?

That’s all I have at the moment. Nothing else tops this book so we will savor a good thing and wait to see if anything else shows up later.

Happy Reading ….

An interesting bargain collection turned up on the author’s page. Seven books. This looks like it will be fun.

Albert: Angel Box Collection One

Amazon quote:

Albert the angel is on assingment!

Because let’s face it, sometimes romance needs a little help …

Albert, Angel Box Collection One, is made up of Kit Morgan’s books where Albert the Angel and his friends appear. Albert and his fellow angels are hard at work in these stories and do their best to make sure their charges have a Happily Ever After. Whether they’re working in historical times or contemporary, Albert and his friends always get their man, not to mention their woman, together! This collection includes:

Reading the Rancher: Can an heiress on the run and an illiterate cowboy have enough in common to have a chance at love? Albert thinks so! And it’s up to him and his special friend Bob to make sure Hattie Dodge and Cooper White do just that. But matchmaking isn’t without its problems, even for an angel.

Caring for the Cowboy: Albert’s angel friend, Myrtle, must try to give two people with nothing the most important thing of all: Love. But can she do it? Maja Van Dyne has been abused and unloved by her father for too long. Will she ever escape him?  And Baxter Hicks … well, let’s just say poor Baxter has problems of his own.

Redeeming the Rogue:  Atticus Judrow was a bounty hunter with a reputation for bringing in men more dead than alive. Though raised by a good family, he felt himself slipping into a life he wasn’t sure he could escape once he slid too far. Can the innocence and purity of one woman set him on the right path? With a little help from Albert’s friend Agatha, perhaps!

Watching the Wrangler: Arabella Simpson’s family lived a nomadic life. Now they were in Creede, Colorado and it was no different than other place they’d stayed and high-tailed it out of. But, she had to admit, the scenery was beautiful and in more ways than one. If she didn’t stop watching the wrangler at the neighboring ranch, they might have to vamoose for a reason other than her father’s gambling habit. Can two people determined not to fall in love find it? Maybe with a little help from one of Albert’s friend, Hansel, they can …

Nursing the Newcomer: Angel Thorne came to Creede to escape the matrimonial wiles of her aunt. But being a nurse in a place like Creede has its own trouble. Like everywhere else, no one can see past her pretty face, which makes Angel figure on a lifetime of spinsterhood. After all, she wants a man that will love her for her mind as well. Will she ever find such a man? Albert thinks so and sends his fastidious friend Louise to help.

Holidays with the Weavers: Albert and his friend Bob have their work cut out for them on this one. Olivia Bridger has a past, but darn if she can remember it. After being robbed, beaten and left for dead in a ditch, she’s found and taken in by the Weaver family. A family that knows her past … and wished they didn’t. And they’re not the only ones. Albert has met Olivia before, in Cutter’s Creek, Montana while on assignment there. True, Olivia was much younger, but she never grew out of the nastiness that took hold of her then. Can the Weaver family and Albert help Olivia find true love?

A Cowboy for Christmas: Amy Jo Weaver wasn’t looking for love, just an apartment. So when she saw an ad for one on the bulletin board at a café in Apple Blossom, she grabbed it. Better yet, the ad wasn’t for an apartment, but a cottage! And what a cottage it was too. Now her dreams of being out on her own were underway! The only fly in the ointment was her new landlord and her family wasn’t about to let her forget it. Can Albert’s friend Hattie along with a few towns people nudge Amy Jo and her landlord in the right direction?

This is awesome, we are on a roll with good books today. What are the chances there will be even more?

I’ll let you know if there are.

Happy Reading!

… on this warmish day at my house.

31 C feels like 34, not all that bad.

Who knew

Oh my goodness, who knew it would take this much work to load the new Kindle with the books still on the old one.

(To bring everyone up to speed after the fact; my Kindle developed fatal issues and had to be replaced. The new one arrived yesterday and the unsuccessful attempt to load it with the same books took most of the day)

Syncing would probably work if I knew how to do it. The only reason I don’t know how is because I resist sameness. I like to think that different devices fill different functions, so I have steadfastly resisted.

Besides, it did not enter my mind ti think it would be this big a deal. Oh well, live and learn.

I haven’t accomplished the original goal and sadly, nothing is in the same order.

It has been a good chance though to reassess what’s read and what’s not. Many have been read but appear as not for some reason.

It’s also turned out to be a good paring down. There were 275 books on the current device but a fraction of those have ended up on the new one. It’s not a bad thing, I have to say.

The new long term goal is to have every book properly flagged.

The other thing I learned? The insane length of time the battery is supposed to last between charges, does not apply to me.

My current read is a book I don’t even remember downloading.

Ghost of a Girl: A Novelette in The Good Shadows Series

Out of time, must go.

I’ll say more about all this later.

Happy Reading

P.S. I had to write something, anything, to keep from breaking my posting streak 🙂

Thanks for your patience!

Isn’t the update feature great?!

P.P.S. the book I was reading is YA and was much better than I thought at first. There aren’t actually any ghosts, the whole idea is the figment of a teenage imagination.

Pretty cover.
