BookBub has a FREE suggestion for us this morning.

The McNallys series, To Love, book 1 from Laura Scott. We’ve had several of her stories in the last year.

To Love

Amazon quote:

Desperate for a fresh start, Jazz McNally pours her energy into renovating her grandparent’s mansion overlooking Lake Michigan. Her goal is to turn the cherished childhood home into a bed and breakfast she’d manage with her twin sister. Jazz doesn’t mind the hard work, until vandals strike. She needs help fast or risk missing the date of their grand opening and being in debt to her four older brothers.

Drifter Dalton O’Brien doesn’t mind giving Jazz a hand, knowing once the job was complete he’d be on his way. But he enjoys spending time with her, more than he should. When vandalism escalates into danger, Dalton is determined to keep Jazz safe. Can he let go of the ghosts in his past long enough to embrace the future?

An interesting FREE book on Amazon’s list

Love on the Range Rebecca Nightsong is an author new to me and I’m looking forward to experiencing her prequel to the Looking Glass Lake series.

Love on the Range

Amazon quote:

A plucky city girl. A tough cowboy. Romance in cowboy country.

It’s still snowing, the expected winter storm has come to stay awhile, here in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The nice thing about a cold dry climate, the snow is small light flakes and accumulates slowly. Not like warmer moist climates, close to lakes and oceans where the snow fall consists of big heavy flakes and the inches build up quickly. St John’s Newfoundland on Canada’s east coast has declared a state of emergency with over two feet (70 cm) of blowing snow, with more on the way. They’ve had more than three times what we are getting. You should see the bizarre pictures of St John’s showing up on-line. Vehicles buried, snow drifts covering doors and windows. Fun and scary at the same time.

It’s snowing and cold but we are counting our winter blessings here in the center of Canada.

So, on to our favorite topic – books.

A Bird Died  Chautona Havig’s Friday Freebie. The author admits this is a tough but touching read, based on a real event in her family’s life.

A Bird Died

Amazon quote:

Ask him–just ask him what happened. He’ll tell you. “A bird died.” A Bird Died is the fictionalized account of one little boy’s journey, one family’s tragedy, and one community’s love and support amidst it all.

“He should be dead.” …. Despite the words of first responders and the findings of doctors’ examinations, Nathan Cox didn’t die when he tripped and fell onto a live power line.

This next book will be a nice change of pace;

An Amazon suggested bargain, No Other Will Do $0.99. I’ve read the prologue and this will be next for me. I love it when we have a feisty little girl and an independent macho young lad. The story begins 12 years later and it should be good.  I dare you to read the prologue for this and not be drawn in.

No other Will Do

Amazon quote:

Men are optional. That’s the credo Emma Chandler’s suffragette aunts preached and why she started a successful women’s colony in Harper’s Station, Texas. But when an unknown assailant tries repeatedly to drive them out, Emma admits they might need a man after all. A man who can fight–and she knows just the one.

Malachi Shaw finally earned the respect he craved by becoming an explosives expert for the railroad. Yet when Emma’s plea arrives, he bolts to Harper’s Station to repay the girl who once saved his life. Only she’s not a girl any longer. She’s a woman with a mind of her own and a smile that makes a man imagine a future he doesn’t deserve.

As the danger intensifies, old feelings grow and deepen, but Emma and Mal will need more than love to survive.

I’m currently reading and appreciating No Greater Love . The synopsis was concerning because the main character is planning to have one of her friends agree to help her end her life. She has inoperable brain cancer with weeks to live and the thought of living her last days with excruciating pain terrifies her. There are several in her group of friends who can see the logic of her fear and would like to help. The rest feel there has to be a better way. In the end – no one is totally comfortable with the idea, who would be. A sensitive look at a difficult subject. In the midst of the pain there are light moments of joy, creating precious memories. (From real life experience I can say this is possible)  I’m giving this book 5***** , even before knowing how it all ends.

No Greater Love

I’m finding myself reliving moments from First Wave, it was that good. It’s still a bargain too

Happy Saturday and Happy Reading.

I’m feeling happy because somehow my mind seems to think a storm gives me a good excuse to wrap up in coziness (layers of fleecy) to sit and read without guilt! Like the storm should stop me from inside chores?  I’m going to make the most of the idea.

BookRunes has a FREE book suggestion this morning, No Greater Love. My first response to the synopsis for this book is negative. The thought of helping someone end their life feels very uncomfortable to me. But…. I’ve read this author before and enjoyed her books. The intent expressed is one thing but maybe twists and turns will provide  surprises and this story won’t go where I expect it to. I’m going to take a chance on this story and see how it all turns out.

No Greater Love

Amazon quote:

For the most part, Kirby Shelton is content with her life. She’s building a new law practice in Colorado Springs, after losing her first in a bitter divorce, and loves to skydive in her spare time. Then she meets Leah Dalton, the computer software queen, and her world is suddenly turned upside down.

Leah, facing a losing battle with cancer, comes to Kirby with a plan to end her life on her terms. Inviting Kirby, and five of her closest friends, to her estate, she offers to make one of them a multi-millionaire. All they have to do is kill her and make it look like an accident.

It sounds like something out of the Twilight Zone, but Kirby gives into her morbid curiosity and takes Leah up on her invitation. After meeting Leah’s friends and sensing the love and dedication they have for this woman, it’s easy to assume one of them will go along with her absurd plan.

Book 2: Colt, Her Reunion

His ex-wife is back. And she’s the target of a serial killer.

But when the serial killer who almost murdered Mirabella once before threatens her life, Colt will do whatever it takes to keep her safe.

Book 3: David, Her Cowboy

When rancher and disabled veteran David King finds a baby in peril, the last woman he’d expect to help is serial dater and disgraced news anchor Aster Andrades.

It’s a good thing there’s a winter storm expected here in Manitoba this weekend. They are predicting tons of snow and with this awesome pile of new books there is some serious reading to be done.

A blogger I follow shared a story about special learning moments with his father, then asked his readers to share similar moments they had with their parents. (on their own blog if they want to)

Mine was by example rather than words and conversation. My deep love of reading had it’s beginning watching my mother read, I’ve never forgotten where it all started.

Well, the snow day has started, and it’s sounds like we will not be alone. This is an equal opportunity storm, sharing it’s wealth widespread. Some areas will receive three or more times what we expect. Please take care and be safe.

I’m currently reading Amish Promises, it’s early on and the jury is still out on whether I’m loving it or not. Certain forms of angst are hard for me to handle and this may be one of them. I can handle reading about tough situations, just not if the reading evokes anxious feelings. I know, that’s the whole point, to make the reader feel something. Make me laugh, I like that better. This book is still a bargain at $0.99.

Amish Promises

Amazon quote:

When Joel and Shani Beck arrive at their new home, they’re looking for peace. Shani is thrilled to have Joel back from Iraq, but he needs time to heal, and the quiet of Lancaster seems just the place. They can’t imagine any trouble with their Amish neighbors, the Lehmans, but things get off to a rocky start when their son is involved in an accident that injures one of the Lehman boys.

Eve Lehman has run her brother’s household ever since the death of his wife, but Tim’s a stern patriarch. Despite his protests, she’s drawn to the new neighbor, Shani, and the two begin to form a strong friendship forged on faith and family. Things seem like they’ve quieted down until Joel’s single and handsome army friend Charlie catches Eve’s attention–a man unlike any Eve has ever met. Suddenly life for both families becomes more complicated than any of them could have ever imagined.

and last but not least, they are suggesting a biography of Roald Amundsen, a successful polar explorer. $1.99. It looks this could be a bit of a hot topic right now. (no pun intended)

From Pole to Pole

Amazon quote:

Roald Amundsen was the most successful polar explorer of his era using sledges, dogs, skis, and ships. He is mainly remembered for being the first man to reach the South Pole on December 14, 1911. What is less often remembered is that he was also the first man to reach the North Pole on May 12, 1926 as the leader of the Amundsen-Ellsworth-Nobile expedition in the airship Norge. His involvement in aviation from his experiments with man-lifting kites in 1909 to his death in 1928 while flying from Norway to Spitsbergen has not been the subject of a detailed study until now.

From Pole to Pole explores Amundsen’s enthusiasm for flight from the moment he read about Bleriot’s flight across the English Channel in an airplane. In June 1928 Amundsen and five companions took off in a search and rescue flight for the missing airship Italia and were never seen again. The only traces of the men and their aircraft were a tip float and an empty fuel tank which washed up on the coast of Northern Norway several months later. Searches of the seabed near Bear Island for the remains of the Latham 47 flying boat he was flying in took place in 2004 and 2009 and interest in the mystery of his disappearance remains high.

We have a fair variety today which is nice.

Happy Reading

I’m sad to be slow with this post but my day job was petulant and demanding all day. Seriously, though, it did keep me going steady, but I’m not complaining. Busy is a good mood booster sometimes.

Teach me to read? and two free books

This post is inspired by the post of a blogger friend here , wanting to become a better reader. His title asks the question: Can you teach me to read?

I agree with him, reading skill is rarely the real problem. Discovery of enjoyment in reading is the real issue. Find a book you love and you will learn to love reading. Over the years, I’ve been considering this question long and hard. In fact, the passion behind this idea is the main motivation for this blog . It’s amazing to witness readers inspired and discovering the joy found in a good book.

Much of my thinking is backed up in the scholarly writings of Mortimer J. Adler and Charles Van Doren in The Classic Guide to Intelligent Reading How to Read a Book. available on Amazon

How to Read a book

My copy was printed in 1972 and given to me 25 years ago (or so) by a good, and scholarly, friend. I freely admit I couldn’t get into it enough to read the whole thing but still it occupies a prominent place, front and center on the book shelf. I think of it fondly and refer to it occasionally. I remember it’s liberating wisdom about the sacredness? of the written word and a few other myth busters like – it’s okay to read the ending before beginning a book, maybe it will even be helpful making connection for you.

Here are some misconceptions I think are acting as road blocks to discovering the joy of reading.

Our mind is convinced we are the problem, the flaw is within us. It’s our fault when we don’t enjoy a book, (We will never make a good reader. We have never learned do it well.) We need to know – lack of enjoyment in a book is not our fault. Seeing the truth of this  will be liberating.

Another thought, while we are at it – lack of speed does not count as a fault. It’s true, slow can be painful and discouraging.  Be encouraged, practice will increase speed, life will be better.

The real problem (I believe) with the lack of enjoyment is found in connection, or more accurately, the lack of it. Books are like people…  they are written by people, so this makes sense to me. When interacting in a conversation we find some connections come easily and swiftly, others – not so much. Like with people, all books are not created equal. It’s unrealistic to expect the same level of connection with every book we pick up.

Another misconception (I think) holding us back from embracing the importance of connection is our misplaced view of honor due to a book.  Somehow (I’m not sure how it happened exactly) we’ve had it drilled into us, the idea that if a book is in print it is important, true, and worth our reading time. We’ve all embraced this rule. At least until we identify the need to examine and discard it. A book does not deserve to be read just because it materialized in front of you. It needs to earn the right. There are so many ways it could be undeserving. Maybe the skill level of the author is lacking, maybe their style of expression is off-putting, maybe their treatment of the subject fails at believable. Maybe the content is blatantly untrue.

If a story does not grab your attention it is not your problem. And, it is possible it’s not the authors either. It’s normal for us humans to see things differently There will always be someone who loves something that I don’t. We like what we like and there’s no argument or shame in that. If a book doesn’t appeal quickly, let go and move on without a second, self defeating, thought.

Somehow, I’ve noticed, when it comes to food we aren’t bound by the same sense of guilt. We know what we like and, in most cases, we find it easy to say no without apology.

Reading deserves the same respectful consideration and we need to learn to say no. No more forcing ourselves to finish a book we don’t enjoy. The only benefit of finishing is reinforcement of the lie, reading is drudgery.

One more thought in regard to food: Many of us have the experience of siting at the table of a cook with few skills, eating is necessary but it’s drudgery. The opportunity to sit and sample at the table of a skilled chef will open our eyes to unimaginable possibilities. Who knew food could taste this good! Books are similar, in my opinion. The same story (recipe) in the hands of a skilled author could take you on a magical journey, maybe even the ride of your life.

*******

OK, so now I’ve had time to sleep on it. In the bright light of morning I’m seeing this from a different perspective and second guessing myself. Maybe the reader is skeptical.

What if I have this all wrong?

Maybe it’s not as simple as finding books you love to make reading universally easy.

Maybe reality says this only works for the few, like me and a short list of other addicts among the billions of possible could-be readers.

Maybe, because I am put off with books I can’t make myself read but I’m all-in with stories appealing to me – like decadent cheese cake, or peanut covered ice cream, drowned in a sea of hot melted chocolate – maybe I just assume it will work as a stimulant for everyone. Maybe in reality it doesn’t work like that.

Maybe books really aren’t like food, where you can’t help but devour a new discovery, tasting so wonderful.

Maybe I’m wrong.

I don’t think so. But I could be.

I hope I’m not. How sad would that be.

This is going to be (hopefully) a lengthy list of free books especially for a blogging friend who, like Julia Roberts in the movie Runaway Bride, is trying to discover what he likes. Julia is accused of not knowing what she likes, always making choices based on the likes of others. There’s the famous scene in the movie where she’s trying to prepare eggs every way possible in a process of elimination. She’s been convinced her choices would be better made if she knew what she liked.

Sometimes we need to do that with books, read a large selection of different styles to discover the one we can’t put down and wish would never end.

One more. Between Skies ($1.31) This is an author new to me. I want to see what he is all about.

Between Skies

Amazon quote:

Everybody dies. Kate Bennett knows that. But it was never supposed to hit this close to home. Never. Horribly, she loses her forty-one year-old husband, Pete, a Pastor growing a fine church in Orlando, Florida, to a sudden heart attack.
After the funeral, Kate is faced with two realizations. She’ll have to vacate the church’s parsonage, leaving her, her two teen-aged children, and her grandmother without a place to call home. The second dilemma is far more subtle, but growing steadily. Her anger has a strange new life.
A knock on her door addresses the first issue. The second isn’t so easily solved.
Kate’s old boss, Caleb Moore, wants Kate to come back to work for him as an investigator in his bail bonds firm, something she did extremely well, but hoped she’d never have to do again. At first, she refuses, even after he explains they have an opportunity to solve a thirty-five-year-old cold case murder of three teenagers that could pay them a cool million dollars.

Happy Reading!

I was actually working on another post (a rewrite of my about page) but it’s not quite ready so we will fall back on bargain books instead. Soon.

Free books January 10, 2020

Can you believe it’s the 10th of January already? I can’t. Time goes by crazy fast.

Chautona Havig has a Friday FREEbie.

Hearthland Volume 4 has been free before, I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned it here though.

The Amazon quote below will explain how Chautona’s episode/volume books work (she has a few of them. They’re fun.)

Heartland Volume 4

Amazon quote:

HearthLand is a serial novel released in episodes. Volume Four is a compilation of Episodes 19-24

Taking a step back in time–deliberately.

After a trip to Walden Farm and an afternoon talking to Chad and Willow Tesdall, Ralph Myner caught a vision for what life could be like. Against the advice of his nephew, Ralph sinks his entire retirement account into an incredibly risky venture.

Harlan Walker thinks his uncle has gone crazy. With the project in motion, all he can do is try to find people to invest their time, money, and even their lives into Ralph’s project before the man ends up broke and without means to survive.

People come from all walks of life as they embrace a new world–the world of HearthLand.

In Volume 4, wedding plans take over HearthLand, and it seems almost everyone is getting into the spirit of things–to the delight of some and disapproval of others. But just as everything seems right with the world, everything goes wrong. Ramiro and Susannah talk to Kirk and things get dicey. Fireworks explode in several directions, and leave everyone wondering what sparks were ignited by them! When a life change tears at the fabric of a family, another change comes to HearthLand.

One nice thing about book sets, one download turns into many. I love that.

Happy Reading!

Today is a read and enjoyed day

Today is a lite day for interesting books. It’s a great time to catch up on  read-and-enjoyed stories. The list is probably heavier with Romance than Mystery but there will be a variety, I hope.

A Model Bride is the latest book read and it suited my mood of the day. It is set in England with a side trip to Edinburgh, Scotland. The real story, though, is about the insecurities the characters have to work their way through. It was the perfect balance between lite and heavy, for me anyway.

A Marriage of Convenience this is the fun story of a much appreciated care-giver and a beloved absentee grandson, jointly inheriting a successful ranching enterprise. To keep the inheritance they have to agree to be married in six months time. She is actively involved in running the ranch and is good at it. He’s from New York and a city boy through and through. And… they’ve never met. She needs her share to provide for her son. He doesn’t need it but decides he wants it.

Garden of Dreams I can’t describe this story as well as Amazon, so here is their quote:

Raised by a mother who was haunted by worry and fear, Jill vowed to live a different kind of life. As a young woman, she planned out what she wanted—a husband, a large home full of children, the opportunity to paint and grow a beautiful garden, a community of believers, and a best friend—then watched as it all came true in the art-filled town of Ashland, Oregon.

But Jill has a secret that she has kept from those she loves most, including her husband and her best friend, Caye…

This is one of my favorite book on this list.

Cold Terror This is another of my favorites on this list. A forensic artist, she’s vacationing on a secluded island where the local sheriff (who hears the local gossip and knows she can) asks her to do a facial reconstruction on a young murder victim they haven’t been able to identify. In the midst of this task a ferocious someone enters her cottage, and with threats, attempts to kill her. She manages to escape and get help but no one knows who the intruder is or why he keeps trying to kill her.

There are a number of partially read collections still in the queue but we’ll wait a bit to mention them.

Currently I’m reading In The Field of Grace, the story of Naomi and Ruth. A daughter-in- law honoring her husband’s mother even though they are both widowed and are from different cultures and countries. When Naomi decides to return to the land of her birth Ruth vows to follow her and look after her. There have been many retellings of this popular Bible story but this one stands out with it’s different perspective. I’m really liking it so far (I’m still near the beginning) and expect to keep liking it.

I hope you are feeling inspired and ready for the next batch of free and bargain books. Tomorrow could be a good day.
