Read and enjoyed October 16, 2022

Everything on this list was a winner. Every single one of them kept me reading much longer than intended and planned tasks were sorely neglected and most did not even happen. The positive effect on my emotional state though was more than worth it. My attitude about life at the moment is upbeat and I’m grateful. Inspired even.

My absolute favorite was this first one. The synopsis didn’t do it justice. It wasn’t until I was immersed in the story that I realized what a treasure I’d found.

Living Lies (Harbored Secrets Book #1)

In the little town of Walton, Georgia, everybody knows your name–but no one knows your secret. At least that’s what Lane Kent is counting on when she returns to her hometown with her five-year-old son. Dangerously depressed after the death of her husband, Lane is looking for hope. What she finds instead is a dead body.

Lane must work with Walton’s newest deputy, Charlie Lynch, to uncover the truth behind the murder. But when that truth hits too close to home, she’ll have to decide if saving the life of another is worth the cost of revealing her darkest secret.

Debut novelist Natalie Walters pulls you to the edge of your seat on the first page and keeps you there until the last in this riveting story that will have you believing no one is defined by their past.

*************************

The next favorite read was possibly the last book in the author’s latest series, although I’m not clear on that point. There are new books being released every few months it seems. The next book was mentioned at the end of this one and I can hardly wait to see what it will be like.

Deadly Intent (Vanishing Ranch Book 4)

Sarah Chamberlain enjoys a new life far away from her abusive ex-husband, thanks to help from Vanishing Ranch. But when she starts to have unexplained, dangerous episodes and suffer memory lapses, she begins to doubt her reality.

She senses her ex has found her. But she doesn’t know if the problem is real or if her mind is playing tricks on her. She can’t contact the police—they would ask too many questions. So, she turns to the very people she knows can help her.

When former Secret Service agent and Vanishing Ranch operative Ruger Stark is assigned to check in on Sarah, he comes determined to find what exactly has her so spooked. But when he arrives at her lakefront home, he realizes he has much more to handle than a typical protection detail.

Ruger and Sarah must stick together to sort through the lies and uncover the truth. Is Sarah drowning in confusion. Or is someone playing a deadly game?

This one was a great experience and I’d like to read more from this author. Life for Delilah seems bleak until the unexpected shows up.

Appalachian Serenade (Appalachian Blessings): A Novella

Delilah Morrissey has always wanted to be a mother, but when she becomes a young widow, that dream now seems farther away than ever. Unable to continue to live alone in Chicago, her only option is to accept her sister’s offer to move in with her family back in West Virginia. Will Delilah have the faith to pursue a new dream–even if it means giving up the old?

In this charming novella, debut novelist Sarah Loudin Thomas introduces readers to Wise, West Virginia–a small town nestled in an Appalachian valley where the everyday miracles of life and faith play out in stories of healing, hope, and love.

**********************

Last but not least, was a tale that still has me smiling. Hector was quite the character and Amanda knew just how to handle him. The deep connection formed between them was an unexpected blessing.

Carry Me Home (New England Inspirations Book 2)

Unlikely friends…

... can be the hardest to let go.

Amanda became a nurse to save as many lives as possible.
After her mother died while being swindled by a church leader, Amanda swore off religion and turned to medical science to solve all of life’s problems.
But when she loses her home and job, and struggles to make a new life in a new town, Amanda’s feeble beliefs can’t withstand the pressure.

Hector’s work on earth is done.
He spent 92 years living, and now he’s ready to spend eternity with his late wife in heaven.

But when a foolish accident lands him in the hospital, he’s saddled with a home nurse who wants to keep Hector alive as long as possible, much to his dismay.
When Amanda meets Hector, their personalities clash, but as they learn to open their hearts and listen to each other, they grow to realize the value of true friendship.

It has been a good weekend for reading… and the day is not over.

The next read is still to be determined, and another bargain has been stumbled upon. I will check that out and share it and maybe the new read in the next post

Oops. There is one more excellent read that I forgot about.

A Flicker of Light

Secrets are like pennies. Everybody’s got one, even the poorest among us.

For generations, the Jensens have raised their families in the small Montana town of Moose Creek, where gossip spreads faster than the wind. Yet some secrets need to be told.

When twenty-one-year-old Bea discovers she’s pregnant on the heels of her husband losing his job, she’s forced to admit she needs help and asks her dad for a place to stay. But past resentments keep her from telling him all that’s going on.

Mitch Jensen is thrilled to have a full house again, though he’s unimpressed with Bea’s decisions: dropping out of college, marrying so young–and to an idealistic city kid, of all things. Mitch hopes to convince Bea to return to the path he’s always envisioned for her, but she’s changed since her mom died. And he refuses to admit how much he’s changed, too, especially now that he might be losing his mother as well.

Grandma June is good at spinning stories, but there’s one she’s never told. Now that her mind is starting to fade, her time to tell it is running out. But if she reveals the truth before her memories are gone forever, the Jensen family will never be the same.

Then there is another one of their suggestions that looks like it could be interesting. Checking out my stash on Amazon I see I’ve downloaded and read one from this author before but it’s been seven years, too long to remember much about it. This will be a new introduction.

The View from Coral Cove: A Sweet Contemporary Romance

When a jilted romance novelist escapes to a small beach town, the last thing she expected to find was the start of an even better love story.  In the wake of a broken engagement and the death of her last surviving family member, wholesome romance novelist Maya Reynolds moves to the haven of Coral Cove, North Carolina, to take over her great-aunt’s toy store.

Some of her grief is immediately eased by the local veterinarian’s daughter, eight-year-old Ashlyn Tanner, who talks her into adopting a kitten.  Ashlyn’s dad, local veterinarian Brody Tanner, is quickly smitten by the newest resident of his hometown. As a single parent, he sacrifices a lot in order to give Ashlyn the world, so a romantic entanglement with Maya is not a distraction he is looking for.

As the three develop a deepening bond in the seaside town where Maya experienced some of her happiest childhood memories, clouds cast a shadow over Maya’s hope for the future. But together, they just might discover that sometimes happy endings happen outside the pages of Maya’s novels, too.

“The View from Coral Cove is Amy Clipston at her best—a tender story of hope, healing, and a love that’s meant to be.” —Suzanne Woods Fisher, bestselling author of On a Summer Tide  A wholesome stand-alone contemporary romance  More contemporary romance to love by Amy Clipston:?The Heart of Splendid Lake

Jumping right in.

BookBub has a FREE suggestion for us today. Yesterday we had a WWII suggestion and today we have another one. They are both attractive because they have a fresh slant on the subject. Each one from a different perspective. I’m looking forward to this read. The author is new to us too, but the first few pages flow nicely so I have high hopes for her writing ability.

Spies & Sweethearts: A Christian WWII Romance (Sisters in Service Book 1)

She wants to do her part. He’s just trying to stay out of the stockade. Will two agents deep behind enemy lines find capture… or love?

1942. Emily Strealer is tired of being told what she can’t do. Wanting to prove herself to her older sisters and do her part for the war effort, the high school French teacher joins the OSS and trains to become a covert operative. And when she completes her training, she finds herself parachuting into occupied France with her instructor to send radio signals to the Resistance.

Major Gerard Lucas has always been a rogue. Transferring to the so-called “Office of Dirty Tricks” to escape a court-martial, he poses as a husband to one of his trainees on a dangerous secret mission. But when their cover is blown after only three weeks, he has to flee with the young schoolteacher to avoid Nazi arrest.

Running for their lives, Emily clings to her mentor’s military experience during the harrowing three-hundred-mile trek to neutral Switzerland. And while Gerard can’t bear the thought of his partner falling into German hands, their forged papers might not be enough to get them over the border.

1531 Entertainment has a bargain book from a new favorite author. Five enjoyable downloads from this author in the last two years means I’m looking forward to this one too.

Love Starts With Elle (A Lowcountry Romance Book 2)

Elle’s living the dream but whose dream is it?

Elle loves her life in Beaufort, South Carolina. Summer days on the sand bar, coastal bonfires, and dinners with friends, sharing a lifetime of memories. She’s found her stride professionally as the owner of a successful art gallery. Life is good.

And she’s found love with handsome, confident Jeremiah Franklin. But Jeremiah has accepted a large pastorate in a different state, so Elle turns her life upside down to take the call with him. When Jeremiah has a change of heart, Elle is hurt and her faith is shaken.

New York lawyer and recent widower Heath McCord imagines the lowcountry cottage he’s rented for the summer is the balm his grieving heart needs. That and time to connect with his little girl. He’s unprepared to meet his beautiful landlord, Elle Garvy, or the love her friendship awakens.

***********************

The reviews for both of these books are positive which is very encouraging.

I hope you give these a try. The goal always is to find books that will be attractive to anyone. Clean, positive, interesting is the criteria. Occasionally something unexpected will pop up, something I’d rather not see. For the most part, though, it’s been a good experience. The downside, if there is one, usually has to do with skill and writing ability. Not all stories are created equal when it comes to abilities, but writers have to start somewhere.

Here’s hoping I made good choices. I think I did.

Happy Reading!

Bargain books October 05, 2022

I’m getting an early start today. Midnight is still a long way off, not like the last two nights when I barely made it under the wire to keep from breaking the chain of daily posts. It’s not the end of the world to start over, at the same time it’s nice to see the days add up. One fellow blogger managed to reach 1000 days in a row. Amazing. I doubt I will ever make it that far but hey, it’s incentive to keep posting when I lose momentum.

It’s helpful that I have a purpose for maintaining this blog. It’s to encourage you to read, to help you find books worth reading in a mind boggling sea of options, and most of all, to inspire you to fall in love with reading if you haven’t discovered the love already.

It’s never too late to find the right book that will make you fall in love with the experience.

The books here may not be your first choice but exploring them will put you in a position to stumble over books that you could love. If that happens I figure – mission accomplished.

So, on to some books.

I’m excited because Christy Barritt has published a new book in her latest series. We’ve been following it and I’m glad it’s a bargain because she puts out so many and I want them all.

***************************

Continuing on, we have a WWII story suggestion we didn’t have time to get to with yesterday’s short post. It has a fresh perspective on the Second World War and this makes it attractive to us. We’ve seen a large number of books lately covering this subject and a fresh slant relieves possible boredom.

The Lines Between Us

A WWII novel of courage and conviction, based on the true experience of the men who fought fires as conscientious objectors and the women who fought prejudice to serve in the Women’s Army Corps.

Since the attack on Pearl Harbor, Gordon Hooper and his buddy Jack Armitage have stuck to their values as conscientious objectors. Much to their families’ and country’s chagrin, they volunteer as smokejumpers rather than enlisting, parachuting into and extinguishing raging wildfires in Oregon. But the number of winter blazes they’re called to seems suspiciously high, and when an accident leaves Jack badly injured, Gordon realizes the facts don’t add up.

A member of the Women’s Army Corps, Dorie Armitage has long been ashamed of her brother’s pacifism, but she’s shocked by news of his accident. Determined to find out why he was harmed, she arrives at the national forest under the guise of conducting an army report . . . and finds herself forced to work with Gordon. He believes it’s wrong to lie; she’s willing to do whatever it takes for justice to be done. As they search for clues, Gordon and Dorie must wrestle with their convictions about war and peace and decide what to do with the troubling secrets they discover.

Sunrise (Sky King Ranch Book #1)

Coming home was never the plan

Pilot Dodge Kingston has always been the heir to Sky King Ranch. But after a terrible family fight, he left to become a pararescue jumper. A decade later, he’s headed home to the destiny that awaits him.

Most of all, she’s living a life Dodge knows could get her killed. One of these days she’s going to get lost in the woods again, and his worst fear is that he won’t be there to find her.

When one of Echo’s fellow researchers goes missing, Echo sets out to find her, despite a blizzard, a rogue grizzly haunting the woods, and the biting cold. Plus, there’s more than just the regular dangers of the Alaskan forests stalking her . . .

Will Dodge be able to find her in time? And if he does, is there still room for him in her heart?

Sunrise is the first explosive volume in a new nail-biting series from USA Today bestselling author Susan May Warren.

God’s perfect plan is sometimes so hard to determine.

Nothing else interesting has come to my attention so that’s it for books today.

I did finish one of our recent downloads and was disappointed with it. I will share my thoughts about it in another post.

I’ve been binging on Fox news clips today rather than spend time reading so I must turn to books to have something more to say. It’s quiet now, videos are all shut down so I can think about this post and my next read. I’ve got one picked out but haven’t started it yet. I’ll wait to share it until I’ve read a chapter or two to see what it’s like.

Do you ever look at words and think they just don’t look right. I often find myself thinking that way and that’s how I’m thinking right now about binging. You know binge-ing, as in I’ve been binging. I Googled it for spelling clarification and binging is what came up but it’s been flagged as incorrect here. It looks wrong to me too but… I’m not seeing a better spelling.

The other word that drives me crazy is read and read. And it comes up often.

Like – my current read is . . . and I just read . . . I am so tempted to use read and red. I would but that doesn’t sit well with me either. It feels so wrong but I really want to. I don’t but I want to, you have no idea.

It would be nice to come up with another spelling but thinking it through I can see that it could potentially create even bigger problems. After all, read is not the only word in the English language with multiple meanings. Once started where would it ever end?

Anyway, moving on. I’m going to read now. I’ll be back hopefully.

Happy Reading.

Free and bargain book September 30, 2022

1531 Entertainment has a bargain suggestion for us. Reading the synopsis it’s clear the attraction of this story is complex, which increases the allure. We’ve had three enjoyable books from this author recently and remembering that experience tells me the chances of this one being worth our while is high. Many good reviews reinforce this assessment. We will still have to read it for ourselves to decide if we agree.

A Time to Stand

A highly relevant and gripping novel that challenges us to ask what it means to forgive while seeking justice and to pursue reconciliation while loving others as ourselves.

Adisa Johnson is living her dream of practicing law with a prestigious firm in downtown Atlanta. Then a split-second mistake changes the course of her career.

Left with no other options, Adisa returns to her hometown where a few days earlier a white police officer shot an unarmed black teen who is now lying comatose in the hospital.

Adisa is itching to jump into the fight as a special prosecutor but feels pulled to do what she considers unthinkable as a young black woman—defend the officer.

As the court case unfolds, everyone in the small community must confront their own prejudices. Caught in the middle, Adisa also tries to chart her way along a path complicated by her budding relationship with a charismatic young preacher who leads the local movement demanding the police officer answer for his crime.

In a small Georgia town where racial tensions run high and lives are at stake, can one lawyer stand up for justice against the tides of prejudice?

  • A stand-alone legal drama
  • Book length: approximately 120,000 words
  • Includes discussion questions for book clubs

***********************

I’m starting a new book and expect to love it a lot if the first chapter is any indicator. It’s not a fluff piece but it is romance and not as intense as a mystery would be, which is a nice change of pace.

Like a Winter Snow: A Sweet Romance (Port Willis Romance Book 1)

Cozy up with this charming romance all about unexpected love, true friendship, and family loyalty. Set during a Christmas-time wedding among the falling snow, this sweet story will warm your heart.

Women’s counselor Joy Beckman has always been a friend and helper to all. That’s why she’s given up everything to be with her parents as her mother suffers through Alzheimer’s.

Joy may not have a thriving career or a love life at the moment, but she’s doing what she does best—taking care of others. And even though it’s difficult, she knows it’s where she is supposed to be.

But life throws a curveball when she has to leave her parents temporarily to travel to England for the December wedding of her best friend. While there, Joy helps Sophia tackle her last-minute to-do list, and in the process, finally meets a man who turns her head—and her heart.

The only problem? He lives in snowy London, and her life is with her parents back in sunny Florida.

She tries to resist Oliver Lincoln’s charms, but it’s harder than it should be. With her heart torn in two, Joy is forced to choose between a life she knows she’s meant for and the one she didn’t see coming.

This last book is still free, and it’s short – only 142 pages. Unlike the first book with a whopping 413 pages. We need one to balance out the other. Can you imagine if every book was 413 pages? I favor long books but sparingly.

That’s it for today.

Enjoy and Happy Reading

Current read September 28, 2022

Before we get into the current read I have to tell you that I was wrong. Last night I shared my guess, it was the doctor behind the unexplained murder attempts. Well, the book is finished, the mystery is solved and I couldn’t have been more wrong. I would love to tell you who it was but that would spoil it for you when you decide to read the story.

On the other hand by the time you may get around to reading it you will have forgotten this conversation and it will still be a surprise. Maybe, if I remember, I will mention who it was as I say good bye.

This book was so much fun. Yesterday’s post had the synopsis, if you would like it I’ll leave the link here.

Moving on . . .

I was excited with the thought of reading this next book when we downloaded it but sometimes the excitement fades when a little time goes by. I was worried that’s what would happen. Something that would make me sad because I wanted to love it.

It was a needless worry. I’m only 1/4 of the way in but I’m hooked. I was doing my usual walk/read laps around the long dining room table when I woke up to the fact that I was still walking, perfectly. Auto pilot kicked in. It’s crazy how that can happen. It does prove I was off in another world.

So here’s the current read. It’s set in medieval times, it isn’t dark but it leans in that direction, compared to the lightness of my last read.

The Healer’s Apprentice (Fairy Tale Romance Series Book 1)

A realistic, fast-paced reimagining of the Sleeping Beauty fairytale full of royalty, romance, and danger. This masterful combination of love and heartbreak—combined with the novel’s surprise ending—is everything fans of fantasy, historical, and medieval fiction yearn for.

Rose has been appointed as a healer’s apprentice at Hagenheim Castle, a rare opportunity for a woodcutter’s daughter like her. While she often feels uneasy at the sight of blood, Rose is determined to prove herself capable. Failure will mean returning home to marry the aging bachelor her mother has chosen for her—a bloated, disgusting merchant who makes Rose feel ill.

When Lord Hamlin, the future duke, is injured, it is Rose who must tend to him. As she works to heal his wound, she begins to understand emotions she’s never felt before and wonders if he feels the same.

But falling in love is forbidden, as Lord Hamlin is betrothed to a mysterious young woman in hiding. As Rose’s life spins toward confusion, she must take the first steps on a journey to discover her own destiny.

I hope you like these two too.

Happy Reading.

( shhhhhh, it was the butler. Seriously!) laugh

A little this and that September 25, 2022

This has been a slow book day and we only have one suggestion, and it’s free. Several years ago this was on my read and enjoyed list. A good book.

Bitter Autumn: Clean Romance Mystery (Northern Shore Intrigue)

“an edge of your seat-do not expect to put it down adventure!”

When Grey returns to his small Wisconsin hometown on the shore of Lake Superior to care for his beloved great-aunt, he’s determined to seek forgiveness for his past. But as he falls into an unlikely romance, danger looms on the horizon…

But one truth many don’t realize until it’s too late—vengeance can be dangerous. A suspenseful love story of redemption and second chances from a Carol Award–winning author, you don’t want to miss.

**********************

My new read is one of our recent downloads. I’m quite enjoying the experience. Sometimes there is a sameness in stories that leave you feeling like you’ve read it before. That is missing this time. The story feels fresh to me in so many ways

Western Hearts: A Sweet Cowboy Romance (Cowboys of Aspen Valley Book 1)

Two promises.
Two tests of faith and love.

Kip made a promise to his dying brother, but cowboy life didn’t prepare him to run a ranch, deal with a rebellious kid sister, and raise twin boys.

Upon first meeting, Kip mistakes Nicole for the new housekeeper hired so his kid sister can avoid her work, then he realizes her true purpose is taking the boys away.

Nicole has a will from her sister – the boys’ mother – giving custody of the twins to her father. Not willing to tear the kids away from everything familiar, she agrees to stay for a getting-to-know-you period.

But the boys aren’t the only ones she’s getting to know, and Nicole finds herself falling for the ruggedly handsome cowboy.

Can something beautiful grow between them or will cross-purposes kill what could be before it truly begins?

What do you know. I didn’t expect to talk about books today and look what happened anyway. Probably because my nose has been in a book more today than it has in weeks and that’s where my thoughts are.

Winter is coming soon and I was out pruning one of the smaller trees. It was overtaking the flower bed and was it a heavy job, at least it was for me. Now I’m relaxing with a book giving my muscles a chance to recover, I’m feeling very pleased to have that chore done, we could have snow in another four weeks and it would be too late.

Thinking back, it seems like the leaves were already falling by this time last year. We have had so much rain this summer that the grass is still green and the trees are not letting go of their leaves. When they do come down there will be a massive pile. Although, the tree pruned today lost all it’s branches including leaves so that will be one small pile that won’t need to be raked.

It was a sunny, warm day to be out in the yard and it was a mood lifter.

I have to specify it was sunny and warm because around here it can very easily be sunny and cold. There could be another warm day yet this year but we can’t count on it. Make the most of what you have sounds like a good idea to me. Not that I always do but at least my intentions are good.

Have a good week.

Happy Reading!

Read and enjoyed September 24, 2022

This first one was my favorite. It’s book 1 in the series and I liked it so well that I’m now reading and loving book 2. Book 2 is a continuation of their story although Marian’s sister Ellen is the main character this time. I’m halfway through and the sisters are currently together in a castle back in 1382.

We don’t know yet whether Ellen will be left there too or will be drawn back to present day. We don’t know if the crooked scientist forcing her to travel to an earlier time to find more of the healing water will be able to harm Ellen and her beloved friend if she fails or if he will be caught and charged with his crimes. I know what I expect to happen but so far nothing as gone as expected. Which is awesome.

Here they are.

Book 1

That’s exactly what research scientist Marian Creighton has always believed about her father’s quest, even if it does stem from a desire to save her sister Ellen from the genetic disease that stole their mother from them. But when her father falls into a coma after drinking a vial of holy water believed to contain traces of residue from the Tree of Life, Marian must question all of her assumptions. He’s left behind tantalizing clues that suggest he’s crossed back in time. Insane. Until Marian tests his theories and finds herself in the Middle Ages during a dangerous peasant uprising.

William Durham, a valiant knight comes to Marian’s rescue and offers her protection . . . as his wife. The longer Marian stays in the past, the more she cares about William. Can she ever find her father and make it back to the present to heal her sister? And when the time comes to leave, will she want to?

Book 2

In the last stages of a genetic disease, Ellen Creighton has decided to live out her remaining days at the estate of her longtime friend Harrison Burlington. Harrison cares deeply for Ellen, but as a wheelchair-bound paraplegic, he’s never allowed himself to get serious in a relationship. However, he’s desperately trying to save her by finding the holy water that is believed to heal any disease.

When he locates two flasks, Ellen refuses to drink one of them because she believes the holy water killed her sister and father. In an effort to convince her to take it, Harrison ingests the contents first, and when Ellen witnesses the effects, she can no longer deny the power of the substance in the bottles. Dangerous criminals are also seeking the holy water, and Ellen soon learns they will go to any lengths to get the powerful drug–including sending her back into the past to find it for them.

And now for the rest.

It has been a pleasant run on good books this week.

Now back to see what will happen next in my story.

Danger abounds.

Happy Reading y’all.
