This may be a good day afterall.

BookBub has a suggestion for us with an author we’ve seen many times before. It’s possible I’ve even read this book, it was first published in 1997.

A Time to Mend

Her mother’s tragic death led Jacquelyn Wilkes to her career as a nurse, in hopes of saving others from similar sorrow. But her carefully built world was shaken when a new doctor, Jonah Martin, arrived at the clinic. Warm with his patients, yet coolly distant toward the nurses, his behavior fueled her mistrust, until she discovered a lump in her own breast–one that was malignant.

In Jonah, Jacquelyn found an unexpected ally in the fight of her life, though she could sense the secret turmoil behind his thoughtful gaze. When past accusations came back to haunt the handsome Jonah, Jacquelyn must find within herself the strength to heal her doctor’s wounds.

Browsing, I found author Christy Barritt has a couple of cute bargain books.

Bound by Disaster (Beach Bound Books and Beans Mysteries Book 2)

Talitha Robinson is knee-deep in renovations as she prepares to open her new bookstore when a body washes ashore on Lantern Beach. While news of the suspicious death surges across the island, a stranger comes knocking on Tali’s door, begging her to endorse his unfinished suspense novel.

Unable to dissuade the author, Tali is left holding his manuscript in her hands. But she has no idea of the peril written on its pages.

Mac MacArthur has kept his distance from Tali since they uncovered a shocking connection about their pasts. But when someone begins to act out the murderous scenes from the book, one victim at a time, Mac’s protective instincts override his decision to stay away.

As danger escalates, Mac and Tali must manage their conflicting feelings as they work together to stop this killer . . . before the last chapter is written.

Bound by Mystery (Beach Bound Books and Beans Mysteries Book 3)

Talitha Robinson is well on her way to completing renovations for her new bookstore, Beach Bound Books and Beans, in Lantern Beach, North Carolina. But when she hosts a friendly meet-and-greet with bookstore owners from nearby islands, the progress she’s making comes to a deadly end.

Someone is backstabbed—literally—right under Tali’s nose. To make matters worse, Tali’s fingerprints are all over the murder weapon and a neighbor claims to have seen Tali commit the crime.

Mac MacArthur knows Tali isn’t the type to hurt anyone, but it doesn’t take a former police chief to figure out things don’t look good for her. The two work together to read between the lines and decipher the truth before Tali gets locked away for crimes she didn’t commit.

As more evidence stacks up, it becomes clear that someone wants to take Tali out of the story. For good.

False Pretense (A Murder in the Mountains Book 4)

It’s been decided. Yesterday I mentioned that the beginning of my current read left me undecided about interest level, was it going to be worth my while? It was too early to tell given I’d only read a few pages. My assessment soon was that the story looked interesting but the writing was left wanting. In the end I didn’t read every page but did read the whole book.

My final decision? The story was well thought out, strong, and interesting. The writing/editing was inconsistent. There were large segments that worked well interspersed with smaller ones that were weak and dissatisfying.

Most of the weak segments were part of the transition between scenes. Tense seemed to be part of the problem at times. (Present? I mostly noticed when it felt off. I wasn’t paying enough attention to tell for sure what was originally intended. I’ve been told present tense is not easy to do well.) But the main distraction involved the regular habit of switching between showing and telling. I can see how it may have been easier to list the needed information leading into scene changes but that practice weakened the story.

In the end though, I loved the book.

**************************

My current read is going much better. The stories, strength wise, are on a par but the writing/editing is much better in this one. My one complaint is excessive descriptive detail. I’m skimming pages fairly often in this read too. But I’m loving it otherwise.

Sunrise (Sky King Ranch Book #1)

Pilot Dodge Kingston has always been the heir to Sky King Ranch. But after a terrible family fight, he left to become a pararescue jumper. A decade later, he’s headed home to the destiny that awaits him.

That’s not all that’s waiting for Dodge. His childhood best friend and former flame, Echo Yazzie, is a true Alaskan–a homesteader, dogsledder, and research guide for the DNR. Most of all, she’s living a life Dodge knows could get her killed. One of these days she’s going to get lost in the woods again, and his worst fear is that he won’t be there to find her.

When one of Echo’s fellow researchers goes missing, Echo sets out to find her, despite a blizzard, a rogue grizzly haunting the woods, and the biting cold. Plus, there’s more than just the regular dangers of the Alaskan forests stalking her . . .

Will Dodge be able to find her in time? And if he does, is there still room for him in her heart?

***************************

Sometimes I wonder if excessive descriptions are used as a tool for achieving word count. In most cases the stories would survive without them.

I’m happy reading.

Water is falling out of the sky, the sun is in hiding, and BookBub has an interesting suggestion for us. Except I’ve already read 2/3 of it. Oh well, It’s not like I’m hurting for something to read.

Romance In The Rockies Box Set Series: A Sweet Small-town Interracial Romance Collection

1. Complex : Sofia Wise returns home to mourn the loss of her grandmother, and the last thing on her mind is love. When a dark, devastatingly handsome stranger shows up on her family’s doorstep, Sofia takes one look and is tempted to make her visit permanent. The problem is, the town’s detective is suspicious of her entire family, and it might take some convincing to prove that she’s more interested in the man himself than in the complex case at hand.

2. Choices: Just as Chloe starts dating the town’s contractor, a handsome doctor passes through their town.
With new dating options, Chloe is forced to make a crucial choice. Marry the golden boy or the charming doctor who makes her weak in the knees. Can she trust God’s plans for her future?

3. Beyond Repair: Hiding from her troubled past, Jules Demski sequesters herself in the mountains of Eron, Colorado, the only place she’s ever felt safe. Her solitude is shattered when an injured man staggers into her family’s barn.
Burned once and still in repair, the last thing she needs is another criminal on her hands. If she can only convince her heart of this, she just might be able to resist the interloper’s charm.

This just popped up before me. It’s a new book by a popular author Dani Pettrey, set to be released in May 2023. It’s a pre-order bargain. I’m excited, I love new books.

The Shifting Current: A Coastal Guardian Novella

An elusive killer. A false identity. A deadly maze of lies.

When Coast Guard Investigative Service Special Agent LOGAN PERRY’s beloved grandfather is murdered, Logan races to his hometown of Cauldron Creek, New Mexico to investigate the murder. His teammate and friend, EMMY THORTON, insists on joining him. Not a good idea—not when he loves her, but carries a secret that he knows will tear them apart.

Emmy knows Logan will pursue the investigation no matter the cost, and she won’t let the man she loves plunge into a dangerous situation alone. She needs to be at his side, even if he believes friendship is her only reason for joining him.

What looks like a robbery gone wrong rapidly shifts, drawing Emmy and Logan into a dizzying maze where nothing is as it appears. Every lead slips through their fingers as threats against them grow deadlier at each turn. Having only each other to rely on, their love for one another deepens, but will they live long enough to admit their attraction to each other?

They’re in the killer’s sights. One wrong move puts their future together and their lives on the line.

******************************

I’m starting a new read and I’m undecided on how it’s going. The story is interesting but the writing is inconsistent. It fluctuates between telling and showing. At this point I will keep at it a bit longer to see if the story is enough reason to keep going. I will hurry through enough to at least see how it ends if it isn’t gong well.

Tess has her work cut out for her—from her day job at the police station to her nights on the campaign trail with her husband, she’s stretched thin. Her two young children also keep her busy, but thankfully she has a supportive mother-in-law who lives just next door.

When the legendary Mothman makes a terrifying appearance and a local librarian goes missing, Tess feels compelled to get involved, convinced something evil has been unleashed on her little town. Then another woman disappears—this one bearing an eerie resemblance to Tess—and the police receive a cryptic message hinting that a serial killer is on the prowl.

After a nightmarish turn of events completely upends the Spencer family, Tess musters her courage to hunt for the monstrous murderer in the woods…even if she has to walk straight into the Mothman’s lair to do it.

I did acquire one new book (well, in a few months I’ll have it when it’s published) so it not a bad day.

I’ll be back later if anything good shows up.

In the meantime. . .

Bargain book October 19, 2022

It was looking a little bleak there for a moment but it turned out there was a good suggestion for us after all. It’s another story (we’ve had quite a few lately) revolving around war. WWI this time. The best stories have spies and this book has more than one. 1531 Entertainment is the suggestion provider and Amazon reviews rate this book at 4.5 stars.

Not by Sight

Gripping Sophomore Novel from a Rising Historical Romance Talent

With Britain caught up in WWI, Jack Benningham, heir to the Earl of Stonebrooke, has declared himself a conscientious objector. Instead, he secretly works for the Crown by tracking down German spies on British soil, his wild reputation and society status serving as a foolproof cover.

Blinded by patriotism and concern for her brother on the front lines, wealthy suffragette Grace Mabry will do whatever it takes to assist her country’s cause. When she sneaks into a posh London masquerade ball to hand out white feathers of cowardice, she never imagines the chain of events she’ll set off when she hands a feather to Jack.

And neither of them could anticipate the extent of the danger and betrayal that follows them–or the faith they’ll need to maintain hope.

***********************

There was one other good looking suggestion. Sadly, it doesn’t fit within the fiscal guidelines I’ve set for myself, I think I’m already way over budget for this month. It is mighty tempting though. It could be the intriguing cover that has my attention. I’ll share it anyway, for future reference if nothing else.

The White City (True Colors)

Mysterious Disappearances Taint the Chicago World’s Fair Step into True Colors — a new series of Historical Stories of Romance and American Crime

She tries to convince her father, an inspector with the Chicago police, to look into reports of mysterious disappearances around the White City. Inspector Wylde tries to dismiss her claims as exaggeration of an overactive imagination, but he eventually concedes to letting her go undercover as secretary to the man in question—if she takes her pistol for protection and Jude Thorpe, a policeman, for bodyguard.

Will she be able to expose H. H. Holmes’s illicit activity, or will Winnifred become his next victim?

Good morning!

It’s a beautiful sunny day, the overnight frost is quickly melting, the grass is oddly still lush and green, the last of the leaves are falling quickly, and a cute little bird is feasting on microscopic somethings on my deck.

An inspiring start to the first day of the week.

And a book suggestion from 1531 Entertainment only adds to the excitement. Terri Blackstock has been a long time favorite author.

Twisted Innocence (Moonlighters Series Book 3)

From New York Times bestseller Blackstock comes a gripping story of a private investigator whose past choices have finally caught up to her—and are now putting her infant daughter at risk.

Though Holly’s stumbled through most of her adult life as a party girl, she longs to live a more stable life for her daughter. Then police show up to question her about the whereabouts of Creed Kershaw, Lily’s father. She has kept his identity a secret from friends and family—she never even told him about the pregnancy. Now he’s a person of interest in a drug-related murder case.

Determined to keep him out of their lives and turn him over to police, Holly uses her private investigating skills to search for him. But her bravado backfires when he turns the tables and takes her and the baby hostage. As desperate hours tick by, Holly realizes his connection to Leonard Miller—the man who has gunned down several members of her family. Creed claims he’s innocent and that Miller is after him too. His gentleness with Lily moves her, but she can’t trust a man who has held her at gunpoint . . . even if he reminds her so much of herself.

Dangers old and new threaten Holly and her baby, and lives are demanded as sacrifices for love. Through a complex web of mistakes and regret, redemption is the one hope Holly has left to hold on to.

Current Read: it’s on the lighter side. Not humorous so much as sweet. Toy store, kittens, and young children. It’s still close to the beginning though and it could deepen before we get too far into the story.

The View from Coral Cove: A Sweet Contemporary Romance

When a jilted romance novelist escapes to a small beach town, the last thing she expected to find was the start of an even better love story.  In the wake of a broken engagement and the death of her last surviving family member, wholesome romance novelist Maya Reynolds moves to the haven of Coral Cove, North Carolina, to take over her great-aunt’s toy store. Some of her grief is immediately eased by the local veterinarian’s daughter, eight-year-old Ashlyn Tanner, who talks her into adopting a kitten.  Ashlyn’s dad, local veterinarian Brody Tanner, is quickly smitten by the newest resident of his hometown. As a single parent, he sacrifices a lot in order to give Ashlyn the world, so a romantic entanglement with Maya is not a distraction he is looking for.  As the three develop a deepening bond in the seaside town where Maya experienced some of her happiest childhood memories, clouds cast a shadow over Maya’s hope for the future. But together, they just might discover that sometimes happy endings happen outside the pages of Maya’s novels, too.

I am definitely looking forward to these new books.

My current read is Spies and Sweethearts

Read and enjoyed October 16, 2022

Everything on this list was a winner. Every single one of them kept me reading much longer than intended and planned tasks were sorely neglected and most did not even happen. The positive effect on my emotional state though was more than worth it. My attitude about life at the moment is upbeat and I’m grateful. Inspired even.

My absolute favorite was this first one. The synopsis didn’t do it justice. It wasn’t until I was immersed in the story that I realized what a treasure I’d found.

Living Lies (Harbored Secrets Book #1)

In the little town of Walton, Georgia, everybody knows your name–but no one knows your secret. At least that’s what Lane Kent is counting on when she returns to her hometown with her five-year-old son. Dangerously depressed after the death of her husband, Lane is looking for hope. What she finds instead is a dead body.

Lane must work with Walton’s newest deputy, Charlie Lynch, to uncover the truth behind the murder. But when that truth hits too close to home, she’ll have to decide if saving the life of another is worth the cost of revealing her darkest secret.

Debut novelist Natalie Walters pulls you to the edge of your seat on the first page and keeps you there until the last in this riveting story that will have you believing no one is defined by their past.

*************************

The next favorite read was possibly the last book in the author’s latest series, although I’m not clear on that point. There are new books being released every few months it seems. The next book was mentioned at the end of this one and I can hardly wait to see what it will be like.

Deadly Intent (Vanishing Ranch Book 4)

Sarah Chamberlain enjoys a new life far away from her abusive ex-husband, thanks to help from Vanishing Ranch. But when she starts to have unexplained, dangerous episodes and suffer memory lapses, she begins to doubt her reality.

She senses her ex has found her. But she doesn’t know if the problem is real or if her mind is playing tricks on her. She can’t contact the police—they would ask too many questions. So, she turns to the very people she knows can help her.

When former Secret Service agent and Vanishing Ranch operative Ruger Stark is assigned to check in on Sarah, he comes determined to find what exactly has her so spooked. But when he arrives at her lakefront home, he realizes he has much more to handle than a typical protection detail.

Ruger and Sarah must stick together to sort through the lies and uncover the truth. Is Sarah drowning in confusion. Or is someone playing a deadly game?

This one was a great experience and I’d like to read more from this author. Life for Delilah seems bleak until the unexpected shows up.

Appalachian Serenade (Appalachian Blessings): A Novella

Delilah Morrissey has always wanted to be a mother, but when she becomes a young widow, that dream now seems farther away than ever. Unable to continue to live alone in Chicago, her only option is to accept her sister’s offer to move in with her family back in West Virginia. Will Delilah have the faith to pursue a new dream–even if it means giving up the old?

In this charming novella, debut novelist Sarah Loudin Thomas introduces readers to Wise, West Virginia–a small town nestled in an Appalachian valley where the everyday miracles of life and faith play out in stories of healing, hope, and love.

**********************

Last but not least, was a tale that still has me smiling. Hector was quite the character and Amanda knew just how to handle him. The deep connection formed between them was an unexpected blessing.

Carry Me Home (New England Inspirations Book 2)

Unlikely friends…

... can be the hardest to let go.

Amanda became a nurse to save as many lives as possible.
After her mother died while being swindled by a church leader, Amanda swore off religion and turned to medical science to solve all of life’s problems.
But when she loses her home and job, and struggles to make a new life in a new town, Amanda’s feeble beliefs can’t withstand the pressure.

Hector’s work on earth is done.
He spent 92 years living, and now he’s ready to spend eternity with his late wife in heaven.

But when a foolish accident lands him in the hospital, he’s saddled with a home nurse who wants to keep Hector alive as long as possible, much to his dismay.
When Amanda meets Hector, their personalities clash, but as they learn to open their hearts and listen to each other, they grow to realize the value of true friendship.

Oops. There is one more excellent read that I forgot about.

A Flicker of Light

Secrets are like pennies. Everybody’s got one, even the poorest among us.

For generations, the Jensens have raised their families in the small Montana town of Moose Creek, where gossip spreads faster than the wind. Yet some secrets need to be told.

When twenty-one-year-old Bea discovers she’s pregnant on the heels of her husband losing his job, she’s forced to admit she needs help and asks her dad for a place to stay. But past resentments keep her from telling him all that’s going on.

Mitch Jensen is thrilled to have a full house again, though he’s unimpressed with Bea’s decisions: dropping out of college, marrying so young–and to an idealistic city kid, of all things. Mitch hopes to convince Bea to return to the path he’s always envisioned for her, but she’s changed since her mom died. And he refuses to admit how much he’s changed, too, especially now that he might be losing his mother as well.

Grandma June is good at spinning stories, but there’s one she’s never told. Now that her mind is starting to fade, her time to tell it is running out. But if she reveals the truth before her memories are gone forever, the Jensen family will never be the same.

Elle’s living the dream but whose dream is it?

Elle loves her life in Beaufort, South Carolina. Summer days on the sand bar, coastal bonfires, and dinners with friends, sharing a lifetime of memories. She’s found her stride professionally as the owner of a successful art gallery. Life is good.

And she’s found love with handsome, confident Jeremiah Franklin. But Jeremiah has accepted a large pastorate in a different state, so Elle turns her life upside down to take the call with him. When Jeremiah has a change of heart, Elle is hurt and her faith is shaken.

New York lawyer and recent widower Heath McCord imagines the lowcountry cottage he’s rented for the summer is the balm his grieving heart needs. That and time to connect with his little girl. He’s unprepared to meet his beautiful landlord, Elle Garvy, or the love her friendship awakens.

The reviews for both of these books are positive which is very encouraging.

I hope you give these a try. The goal always is to find books that will be attractive to anyone. Clean, positive, interesting is the criteria. Occasionally something unexpected will pop up, something I’d rather not see. For the most part, though, it’s been a good experience. The downside, if there is one, usually has to do with skill and writing ability. Not all stories are created equal when it comes to abilities, but writers have to start somewhere.

Here’s hoping I made good choices. I think I did.

Happy Reading!
