Free books September 13, 2020

The usual sources for Free and bargain books are rather dry today. I did stumble over several other FREE books on my own while checking things out. They are from authors I’ve not read. I’m not sure what they are about (the authors) or whether the read will be enjoyable but we will go for it anyway because on first glance they looked like they could be good.

There was one suggestion this morning from a usual source that looked rather interesting, but it turned out to be over 500 pages long, which was disappointing. Not many authors can pull off that number of pages. Most of the time the story could be cut back to 200 or so pages and still hold up. And be even better. I do like long books, when it takes that much to properly tell the story. I would have taken a chance on it but the synopsis didn’t look like it would hold up to being stretched that far.

Happy Reading …

… on this cool and cloudy day. A furnace kind of day to be comfortable. Such a drastic change after the hot weather of a few days ago.

It’s the perfect day to bake. A nice bread pudding with lots of fruit will make a perfect lunch, and a few breakfasts.

I couldn’t wait for it to cool down enough to make a good looking slice. Raisins, cranberries, bananas, zucchini, and best of all, lots of chocolate chips. Yum. Along with bread, milk and eggs … you could say it’s a sandwich. Don’t you think?

Free and bargain books September 03, 2020

BookBub has a FREE suggestion for us this morning. I’m excited because Robin Lee Hatcher is one of my longtime favorite authors and she’s become like a friend. I find it’s impossible to experience multiple exposures to the creator of enjoyable stories without developing an emotional attachment. The essence of the person behind the words leaks through and the reader is drawn to a new friend. The attachment is rarely reciprocal as for that to happen the participants would have to meet somehow. Reading and writing are not shared occupations, no crossing of paths involved. Still, the reader’s life is richer for the experience.

Things are changing in the communication department though. More and more, authors are looking for ways to connect with their readers. Modern technology and social media provide options that make it easy. Interaction is a very good thing for the world of books and reading. My own list of followed and enjoyed authors is constantly growing.

I’ve never met Robin in person but she is one of my many favorite book friends and I can see already that this new read will be another good experience.

Newly released on September 1st, it’s still a bargain if you’d like to give it a try. When I stop to think about it, I think the message of this positive story can be a life changer. Spread the love around.

A little story and a Free book September 02, 2020

This year is going by way too fast. I still have some Christmas decorations about the house. I was looking at them the other day thinking there are so few days left in the year there’s no use putting them away now.

I doubt I could have talked myself into it anyway. I kind of like having them around all the time.

My kids will be here Saturday to take me to lunch for my birthday and they may give me a hard time about them still gracing the fireplace. I won’t share that a bowl full of tree ornaments off the dining room table did make it back in the storeroom a few weeks ago. I was cleaning up for company that didn’t materialize.

I’m excited about seeing my family. Not just for lunch, although I’m looking forward to it. They are also going to clean my gutters while they are here. It’s been a few years since they were done and I’m sure they are badly in need of a good wash. I’ve been tempted this summer to go up on the roof myself, since I’m the only one here to do it. Common sense prevailed. I’d probably fall off and kill my self or break something.

I probably wouldn’t have had to lie there very long before help came. The neighbors have windows over looking my backyard. They’d probably notice the unusual activity in time to see me fall. Knowing that almost gave me the courage to try, except I couldn’t figure how to pull myself up on the roof without destroying the gutters. I’m vertically challenged and age is against me. Spoils all my fun.

It will be something to see what’s in the gutters besides grit off the shingles. I suspect there could be birds nests. I’ve had that thought other years too as I could sometimes hear birds that seemed very close. This year I think there may be more than just the usual small birds I had in mind. The Mourning doves seem to be in larger numbers this year and they spend a lot of time flying around my roof. I keep surprising them in the flower beds too. Lots of babies this year. Hopefully the nests will be empty by now and not in any danger from us.

There isn’t much going on in the book realm tonight so this unintentional story gave me something to say when I thought I had nothing. Seems to be the story of my life (haha)

BookRunes has a FREE book suggestion for us today and it’s the only thing on the agenda.

I like reading books like this one, always have. Learning new insights has been more than helpful on my journey through the years.

My only hesitation in mentioning the book here is I’ve not read this author before. At least not that I recall. Some authors are more helpful than others and reading through the chapter headings I’m not sure what to think. I’m going to read it and if it doesn’t sit well I have no problem casting it aside. Hopefully it will turn out to be good counsel.

I’m happy with the title. I love having God as my therapist. He knows everything about me. I don’t have to struggle to express anything. He always knows.

It will be an adventure to see if this book holds helpful nuggets. I’m hoping.

If God Were Your Therapist

Amazon quote:

Technological advancements have made our lives increasingly comfortable, safe, and easy; and we have more opportunities and advantages available to us today than ever before.

Given the high level of both opportunity and comfort, one would expect people to be happier than ever, and even more satisfied with their lives. The reality, though, is startlingly different. Instead of thriving and feeling empowered as a result of greater choices, we are deteriorating.

According to the latest research, one in four Americans suffers from mental illness. The drug companies try to keep pace, with the sales of anti-depressant, anti-anxiety, and mood-stabilizing drugs at record levels, and tens of millions of new prescriptions being written each year.

But that doesn’t seem to be enough.

Many people are finding life just too painful. Every day, 80 Americans take their own lives, and over 1,900 Americans visit Emergency Departments for self-inflicted injury.

So why are we suffering from such emotional pain and anguish? Drawing on timeless wisdom and fundamental principles in psychology, If God Were Your Therapist offers insights into the human condition, and reveals how regardless of the opportunities available to us today, a lack of self-control results in poor choices, and ultimately leads to negative emotions and destructive habits.

As a solution, this book offers neither exercises or affirmations, nor meditations or motivating mantras. There is no homework to do or journals to fill out. Rather, readers learn how to regain self-control and move their thoughts, choices, and lives in a purposeful, powerful, direction, free from the shackles of anxiety and stress.

Happy Reading y’all

I hope this book turns out to be helpful. We could all use a little bit of helpful.

Free and bargain books August 28, 2020

BookBub has a bargain suggestion that is part of my 2016 collection. I really like stories about angels and God. Probably because God has always been close for me, especially in the difficult times of my life. There have been many of those and sometimes I forget about how just many. Until, as happened yesterday, I was reminiscing with a friend and remembered some tough things for the first time in years. Like decades ago when my youngest was a new-born and I found myself opening our home to a young woman suddenly grieving the murder suicide of her parents.

The discussion to arouse such memories was centered around a request for me to consider renting a room to a young woman needing support. She’s working her way through dealing with an abusive background. I’m thinking about it, prayerfully.

The main character in this story is facing some tough times herself.

Shelter

She begged God to rescue her.

He said, “Go.”

So she headed out into the blizzard. In a car that wasn’t exactly hers, with a dog who wasn’t exactly a rat terrier, she drove. Until she ran out of gas in the small Maine town of Mattawooptock. Mattawoopwhat? What on earth is God thinking?

But it is there, in a weird little bathroom in a weird little church in a weird little town that Maggie Hansen finds herself. And as God would have it, she finds a lot more than that.

You will love this book because it will warm your heart. Read it today!

The same author has a FREE book and while it has angels it looks to to be lighthearted too. A fun read that I’ve not seen before and look forward to reading.

The Whistle Blower: A Wing and a Prayer Mystery (Wing and a Prayer Mysteries Book 1)

Bad guys beware: There’s a soccer mom on your trail.

With three kids, Sandra’s life is a whirlwind of activity. Yet, sometimes she’s a little bored.

When a referee drops dead during her son’s soccer game, and a short man claiming to be an angel asks her to help investigate—suddenly, life’s not such a routine.

The angel (is he really an angel?) tells her to go undercover as a soccer referee, which, of course, is ridiculous. She hasn’t run anywhere since high school.

But Sandra will find out she is still capable of far more than she thought—with a little help from above.

What can I say.

Jessie’s Hope

Jessie's Hope

Amazon quote:

Years ago, an accident robbed Jessie Smith or her mobility. She also lost her mother and became alienated from her father. When Jessie’s high school sweetheart Matt Jansen finally proposes, her excitement turns to worry. Those she loves she loses.

With their wedding fast approaching, Jessie’s grandfather, Homer, searches for the perfect dress for “his Jessie” — one that would allow her to forget, even if for a moment, the boundaries of her wheelchair. But finances and one unexpected disaster after another thwart his plans.

Determined to heal from her past, Jessie seeks to find her father. Perhaps the pair can reconcile their differences. Can a sliver of hope lead to everlasting love? Or is it enough to accept that sometimes grace and faith allow us to live with joy, regardless of our circumstances.

Saratoga Letters

Saratoga Letters

Amazon quote:

1777: The Battle of Saratoga, a turning point of the Revolutionary War, gives the American Continental Army its first great victory. But there seems little to celebrate for Abigail, a woman forced to tend to a wounded British soldier. While nursing William back to health, Abigail finds herself pursued by others in the enemy camp who have less than gallant intentions toward her. Fearful of who she can trust and who might betray her, she leans on her faith and God’s Providence for survival.

1977: On the anniversary of the Battle of Saratoga, thousands arrive from Europe and the United States to celebrate the event. Among the re-enactors are descendants of the original participants from both sides of the battle. One young American, Abby, meets the offspring of a British soldier. But when she finds herself almost assaulted by some men at the event, Abby turns to the only person she knows—her British ally. Can she trust him with her life? Or will he betray her in the same way loyalist spies betrayed her ancestors? Perhaps her answer lies in the letters from her ancestor and namesake, Abigail.
