Free books October 14, 2019

Two FREE books caught my interest this morning.

The first one is courtesy of the BookRunes daily email.

Celtic Cross was in my downloads for 2015. If I remember right, I did like it and would have shared it if I was blogging back then. It should be a good read. Historical Fiction.

Celtic Cross

The second one is courtesy of the BookBub daily email.

Her Last First Kiss is new to me. Liz Isaacson does show up in my read list but not as often as some authors do. I can’t remember if I liked her style or not. Some write deeper than others and I prefer deeper, personally. I think Liz’s style may be in a lighter vein. We will have to read this and check it out to be sure.

Her Last First Kiss

I have been reading some of the novellas from yesterday and it’s served as a reminder as to why I prefer full length novels.

Summer of Dreams

Summer of Dreams is the first one to be checked out and I loved it. Every now and then a book comes along that lights-up-the-room and this book did that for me, in the beginning at least.

A successful novella will set an even pace from beginning to end. Difficult to do it seems. The common fault is time spent developing the story with a sprint to the end, before running out of pages. The sudden and hurried conclusion spoils whatever the book had going on for itself in the beginning.

That’s what happened here. The beginning of the book was awesome.

Novella format is great when the storyline doesn’t have much going for it and it would be a stretch to make it fit the Novel length. In my opinion, it’s a shame to waste a good idea on a Novella when a longer format could do it justice – leaving a satisfied reader.

The sneak peak at the sequel was disappointing too. It followed one of the other characters, ten years in the future. There was no resolving of the unfinished business in the first book.

Aside from the disappointing ending, it was well worth the read. The characters were great. I loved the way they think, and the resulting interactions between the three of them. Dry humor with audacious characters is the best.

Historical fiction.

One brilliant young woman with a military father disapproving of her engineering dreams.

A brilliant young man seeking an engineering education in the only avenue open to him, Officer Academy training.

The two are thrown together because the accumulation of his misconduct demerits has him facing expulsion and possible imprisonment. He must work to reduce that number to graduate in a few weeks. His reduction assignment is to build a working pump for a fountain in a ‘birdcage.’ That’s what her father called it when he requested military engineering help for his daughter.

Her colorful and resourceful cousin is part of the awesome threesome and between them, life is full of trouble.

Check out Summer of Dreams to see what you think.

Happy Reading!

Free books Thursday Oct 10, 2019

The first FREE book this morning is suggested by BookBub’s daily email, the second is mentioned in BookRunes’ daily email.

Deborah Raney writes deep, insightful stories. Appropriate for this book. Insight was originally published in 2009, After reading the first few pages I suspect I’ve read it before, but that’s ok. It’s been updated and was republished in 2016 with a new epilogue, I’m looking forward to reading it again.

Insight

I’ve not encountered this author, M.E. Weyerbacher, until now so can’t make any recommendations or comments. I’m expecting the best from her though. I’m looking forward to checking this out.

Wild Hope

At the moment I’m still hooked on yesterday’s Colleen Coble Christmas Collection. The second book, Holy Night.

Colleen Coble All is Bright

The bride is calling off the wedding. Her Downs Syndrome sister has been kidnapped on the mostly deserted  Hawaiian beach by a criminal with a vendetta against her fiancé. He’s calling the shots now and if she tells anyone he will kill Eva.

A witness claims they  saw a man with a girl jump of the cliff into the water and that’s where they are gathering.

The groom has just learned from his best friend about the prisoner’s unexpected release from prison. Bane is stressed by the danger it means for all of them but with the frantic search for Eva the opportunity to share his concern with Leia hasn’t been there. Now she’s calling off the wedding and he believes her. He has no idea the two situations are linked.

Some tense moments happening in this Christmas romance story.

In the meantime, we’re still waiting on the possible weekly email from Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas – LPC Books. If there is one today I will be letting you know!

Happy reading.

Free Oct 4, 2019

Only one again today – this time it’s courtesy of BookRunes daily email.

The Memory

The Memory

Elliot has lost his memory. A car crash stripped him of every memory but one. Seven years ago he fired an employee for unethical conduct which she denied and he remembers.

Determined to find out what’s so special about that particular memory he shows up in Geneva’s small home town to confront her looking for answers.  She’s in shock to see him standing on her doorstep, unannounced.

I’m not sure if this will turn out to be the worthwhile read I hope it is but I’m still hoping, anyway. It sounds like it has some good potential, and while 143 pages is short and  doesn’t leave much room for development, maybe it’s enough? I’m going to take a chance on it. My curiosity is piqued and I have to know.

Happy Friday all.

 Happy weekend reading to you

Free Sept 30, 2019

Happy Monday!

This one showed up in this morning’s BookBub email. Looking at the cover it has an appealing lighthearted feel. I am ready for a change of pace so this is a welcome addition.

Free

Second Hand Secrets Miss Main Street – Second Hand Secrets book 1 – Angela Castillo

It seems I’ve read this author before, in 2015 and 2016, and the  experience was good. The titles were Texas Women of Spirit series books 1 and 2, The River Girl’s Song and The Comanche Girl’s Prayer. Refreshing my memory with the first few pages I remember wishing I had a blog started at the time so I could share.

Both of these books are available free on Kindle Unlimited

The River Girl's Song  Texas Women of Spirit – The River Girl’s Song book 1 – Angela Castillo

The Comanche Girl's Prayer  Texas Women of Spirit – The Comanche Girl’s Prayer book 2 – Angela Castillo

$0.99 for the offered book in today’s BookRunes email. The Watch on The Fencepost

This one appeared for me previously in one of my Sept 25th’s emails (before I was sharing like this) and I read it over the weekend. It was excellent. A mystery involving family secrets and the suspicious death of her parents. A book I gladly recommend.

The Watch on the Fence Post   The Watch on the Fencepost – Kay DiBianca

Happy Monday, happy reading!

Free Books Sept 27, 2019

This first one is from Chautona HavigAuthor. Chautona is prolific… at everything; books, blog posts, emails, and free book offers. You will see her name pop up here regularly. This book was mentioned in her regular email today. Be sure to subscribe if you would like to see what else she does. She is on FaceBook as well.

Prairie (Journey

For this one you need to search Prairie (Journey of Dreams: Book 1) Chautona Havig for it to come up on Amazon. Prairie isn’t enough.

It seems I downloaded this book in 2014. I don’t remember much about it but the synopsis describes a city girl dreaming of a life of prairie living, and it happened. I’m must read this again. I’ve enjoyed all of Chautona’s books. She has a unique style and  imagination. Looking forward to a re-read.

The next one was offered on BookRunes

Warrior   Warrior (Spiritual Warfare Series book 1) Linda K. Rodante

This is a book and author new to me, billed as Romantic Suspense. I am partial to books similar to this one (spiritual warfare) and I’m looking forward to checking it out.

BookBub offers one you may find interesting. It isn’t free but is on sale for $1.31 which is also a good deal.

Hold Me Close

Hold Me Close is book 1 in a new Historical Fiction series set in 1772 Charles Town South Carolina. I’m not familiar with this author so can’t offer an opinion or recommendation at this point.

That’s it for today.

Until next time, Happy Reading!
