When You Look at Me (A Pleasant Gap Romance Book 2)

An unexpected mother-to-be
A romance-leery composer
And a forgotten melody from the past that holds the keys to their futures

When Julia Jenkins’ great aunt dies and leaves her a Victorian mansion with decades of secrets, Julia never expects to unearth a World War 2 espionage mystery. Struggling with her own past since an assault left her pregnant, her future as a solo parent leaves her dreams uncertain. The inheritance from her great aunt gives Julia the ability to take a step back into her future, but also sends her into the discovery of a love story she’d never anticipated. As she goes through her aunt’s treasured possessions, Julia uncovers some oddly written piano music with a musical code she can’t decipher on her own. Not to worry, introverted Englishman and composer, Henry Wright, is thrust on the scene by a pair of homespun matchmakers who know the ‘right’ man for Julia’s wounded heart.

Henry arrives in Pleasant Gap with the task of composing the soundtrack for his best mate’s newest film. The Jenkins’ family’s southern welcome and gregarious personalities set his reticent nature on edge, but he’s inexplicably drawn to his gentle and music-loving hostess, Julia. Uncertain how to build a friendship with the wounded woman, and rather hopeless in communicating well through words, the bond of music becomes a bridge between her uncertainty and his awkwardness.

But her broken past and his families’ expectations build a wall much greater than the cultures that separate them. As they work together to solve a musical mystery from the grave, will an unlikely romance from the past inspire their hearts to trust in a God who’s written the perfect melody for their lives?

With these two, there will be three five star books in a row.

In the Unveiled Series the author has a gift for playing our heart strings with a wide variety of emotions. I think if I had anything to say about this book it would be just that, it was deeply emotional across all three books.

The Domino Effect was also an intense experience. It was very well written and engaging.

I loved them both and when the current read is finished I will be able to say I loved it too. I don’t get to say that nearly as often as I would like to.

Happy Reading y’all

Read and enjoyed January 20, 2022

To start off with, I have to share this gem. A Davis Bunn quote from The Domino Effect Page 91. It’s an interesting idea that resonates with me. I’ve been mulling a similar thought over in depth recently and I like the way he puts it.

Willfully blind?

“Most people live broken and fractured lives” Sir Trevor said. “And remain willfully blind to any chance they might have of healing and moving on.”

It’s a great thought and fits in with where I am in my head these days but it’s not at all what the book is about. The quote is in fact referring to a scene with the main character’s brother. He has been severely injured in a car accident and there are many theories around his lack of progress in healing. This was one of them.

Instead, the main part of the plot is full of intrigue, the dangerous kind.

For me, this was a story where magic happened. You know, like watching a movie that you are totally caught up in and feel like you are there living it with them. I had a hard time putting it down, read it in record time and then was sad when it was over.

A Financial Thriller That Will Keep Readers on the Edge of Their Seats

The Barrister and the Letter of Marque

As a barrister in 1818 London, William Snopes has witnessed firsthand the danger of only the wealthy having their voices heard, and he’s a strong advocate who defends the poorer classes against the powerful. That changes the day a struggling heiress, Lady Madeleine Jameson, arrives at his door.

In a last-ditch effort to save her faltering estate, Lady Jameson invested in a merchant brig, the Padget. The ship was granted a rare privilege by the king’s regent: a Letter of Marque authorizing the captain to seize the cargo of French traders operating illegally in the Indian Sea. Yet when the Padget returns to London, her crew is met by soldiers ready to take possession of their goods and arrest the captain for piracy. And the Letter–the sole proof his actions were legal–has mysteriously vanished.

Moved by the lady’s distress, intrigued by the Letter, and goaded by an opposing solicitor, Snopes takes the case. But as he delves deeper into the mystery, he learns that the forces arrayed against Lady Jameson, and now himself, are even more perilous than he’d imagined.

You know it has been a good day for books when we have popular authors involved. All three look to be great reads.

It’s another cool day here with an extreme cold warning. That usually means there will be a hefty wind chill that will cut right through you. I hear it’s supposed to warm up a bit and bless us with more snow. In this part of the country we don’t complain about snow, the winter sports enthusiasts love it. Besides it’s dry and fine and doesn’t accumulate all that much. It will never reach the top of the doorways like it can with wet snow.

Staying inside where it’s warm, it won’t be a boring weekend with awesome books to read.

I hope you are happy reading too.

Medical Mystery

When her phone rang, Diane Macklin wondered what her sister wanted now. Then, she heard that their mother was in the Emergency Room with a heart problem.

The doctor tending to her mother was Dr. Joe Adams, who was far from Diane’s idea of the family doctor. He had been alone since his first wife had died, and was apparently heaven-sent as a mate for Diane, if she could only get past the trauma of her previous near-miss at the altar.

The heart problem was hard to solve initially, the subsequent difficulty turned out to be murder, and affected the lives of both Diane and Joe.

Silent Night, Deadly Night

The colored lights on the snow gave it a holiday appearance, but the dead woman’s body in the yard added a grisly touch. How did Ina Bell Patrick die?
Who killed her? And why?

The dead woman had no direct heirs, so two nephews and a niece stood to inherit. Dr. Laura Morris was left to make all the arrangements, attorney Roger Morris could certainly use the money, and Zack Morris had disappeared two years earlier. Then there was neighbor and “best friend” Fay Autrey, who was certain the woman intended to leave her some money—a great deal of money.

The police were still looking for the killer who left the frozen body in the snow when it became apparent someone was trying to pick off the heirs, one by one. Who would win the race—the police or the killer?

Evidence of secret meetings and a young girl’s tearful confession point to the victim’s double life, but what does the solicitor’s murder have to do with the murder of a physician on the local golf course? Nothing, it would seem–except for another puzzling note, affixed with a similar-looking bloodied hatpin.

Soon the police make an arrest in connection with the murders, but Drew isn’t at all certain they have the right suspect in custody. And why does his investigation seem to be drawing him closer and closer to home?

It seems that all of Grace Clemens books are lengthy (over 400 pages) and priced as low bargains. This could be a bad sign. Still $1.25 is an easy way to check out her work. I’m going to order this one out of curiosity.

Currently, I’m reading an author new to me, one I wanted to check out. I’m about a third of the way through and undecided in my assessment. I will finish though. It is still free if you are interested.

Maybe part of my problem with enjoyment is that I forgot which author I was reading. One of the hazards of a fast pace between them. I was reading books from a less-enjoyed writer and needed a break. I’ve been reading this book with a biased opinion. Must rectify that.
