It has been a good book day. My current read is not bad either. I have to admit I’m enjoying it more than I expected to.

Jumping right in.

BookBub has a FREE suggestion for us today. Yesterday we had a WWII suggestion and today we have another one. They are both attractive because they have a fresh slant on the subject. Each one from a different perspective. I’m looking forward to this read. The author is new to us too, but the first few pages flow nicely so I have high hopes for her writing ability.

The reviews for both of these books are positive which is very encouraging.

I hope you give these a try. The goal always is to find books that will be attractive to anyone. Clean, positive, interesting is the criteria. Occasionally something unexpected will pop up, something I’d rather not see. For the most part, though, it’s been a good experience. The downside, if there is one, usually has to do with skill and writing ability. Not all stories are created equal when it comes to abilities, but writers have to start somewhere.

Here’s hoping I made good choices. I think I did.

Bargain books October 05, 2022

I’m getting an early start today. Midnight is still a long way off, not like the last two nights when I barely made it under the wire to keep from breaking the chain of daily posts. It’s not the end of the world to start over, at the same time it’s nice to see the days add up. One fellow blogger managed to reach 1000 days in a row. Amazing. I doubt I will ever make it that far but hey, it’s incentive to keep posting when I lose momentum.

It’s helpful that I have a purpose for maintaining this blog. It’s to encourage you to read, to help you find books worth reading in a mind boggling sea of options, and most of all, to inspire you to fall in love with reading if you haven’t discovered the love already.

It’s never too late to find the right book that will make you fall in love with the experience.

The books here may not be your first choice but exploring them will put you in a position to stumble over books that you could love. If that happens I figure – mission accomplished.

So, on to some books.

I’m excited because Christy Barritt has published a new book in her latest series. We’ve been following it and I’m glad it’s a bargain because she puts out so many and I want them all.

Deadly Intent (Vanishing Ranch Book 4)

Continuing on, we have a WWII story suggestion we didn’t have time to get to with yesterday’s short post. It has a fresh perspective on the Second World War and this makes it attractive to us. We’ve seen a large number of books lately covering this subject and a fresh slant relieves possible boredom.

For a Monday morning things were not going well. Last week I missed garbage pick-up, not an uncommon occurrence since I don’t put it out every week, and I needed to get it done this week. Pick up days move ahead one day every time we have another statutory holiday. That messes me up so much that I’ve stared leaving a note in a prominent place to jog my memory. I remembered this time. As a double check I even remembered to look out to see what the neighbors had done.

The street was clear, not a single garbage can to be seen anywhere. Maybe it’s too early. I checked the time. This was very strange, someone always get their stuff out early before anyone else. Nothing. I checked back a few more times, still nothing.

Maybe I’m wrong about the day. I’ll check the online garbage schedule just to be sure Monday is October pick-up day. Nope, not wrong, Monday is the right day. This is so bizarre, what is going on? I think I’m going out of my mind. Maybe everyone slept in, give it some time..

Still nothing. People in this neighborhood are dependable. Some of them can be counted on to be first out every time. What am I missing? There has to be an explanation. Maybe I have the date wrong or something. The date looks right. Doesn’t it? Maybe I need to look closer, the font it so small it’s hard to tell for sure. Hover over the date, bend down and squint, look closer. It’s SUNDAY.

I was positive it was Monday. It’s month end and I have been burning the midnight oil to beat a work deadline (because I left it to the last minute) and was feeling good to be all ready to roll first thing this morning. Finding out it was only Sunday still seems unbelievable. One the other hand it’s a huge relief.

Reading until 4 AM does not make for a good start on a Monday morning. What was I thinking?

All bets are on me forgetting it’s garbage day tomorrow. Remember the day before, forget on the day. I have to find a new way to keep from messing this up. A boxing glove that flies out and hits me upside the head would work.

Nothing else interesting has come to my attention so that’s it for books today.

I did finish one of our recent downloads and was disappointed with it. I will share my thoughts about it in another post.

I’ve been binging on Fox news clips today rather than spend time reading so I must turn to books to have something more to say. It’s quiet now, videos are all shut down so I can think about this post and my next read. I’ve got one picked out but haven’t started it yet. I’ll wait to share it until I’ve read a chapter or two to see what it’s like.

Do you ever look at words and think they just don’t look right. I often find myself thinking that way and that’s how I’m thinking right now about binging. You know binge-ing, as in I’ve been binging. I Googled it for spelling clarification and binging is what came up but it’s been flagged as incorrect here. It looks wrong to me too but… I’m not seeing a better spelling.

The other word that drives me crazy is read and read. And it comes up often.

Like – my current read is . . . and I just read . . . I am so tempted to use read and red. I would but that doesn’t sit well with me either. It feels so wrong but I really want to. I don’t but I want to, you have no idea.

It would be nice to come up with another spelling but thinking it through I can see that it could potentially create even bigger problems. After all, read is not the only word in the English language with multiple meanings. Once started where would it ever end?

Anyway, moving on. I’m going to read now. I’ll be back hopefully.

Current read September 28, 2022

Before we get into the current read I have to tell you that I was wrong. Last night I shared my guess, it was the doctor behind the unexplained murder attempts. Well, the book is finished, the mystery is solved and I couldn’t have been more wrong. I would love to tell you who it was but that would spoil it for you when you decide to read the story.

On the other hand by the time you may get around to reading it you will have forgotten this conversation and it will still be a surprise. Maybe, if I remember, I will mention who it was as I say good bye.

Moving on . . .

I was excited with the thought of reading this next book when we downloaded it but sometimes the excitement fades when a little time goes by. I was worried that’s what would happen. Something that would make me sad because I wanted to love it.

It was a needless worry. I’m only 1/4 of the way in but I’m hooked. I was doing my usual walk/read laps around the long dining room table when I woke up to the fact that I was still walking, perfectly. Auto pilot kicked in. It’s crazy how that can happen. It does prove I was off in another world.

So here’s the current read. It’s set in medieval times, it isn’t dark but it leans in that direction, compared to the lightness of my last read.

Frost? It’s a bit early isn’t it? September 27, 2022

Frost. We’ve had the first one of the season and it’s only September 27, 2022. I wonder when the first snow will fly. I’m sad to see summer leave but… winter has it’s own charm.

Everything is still green although with the change in weather it probably won’t be for too much longer. It’s hard to tell though. Every year seems to have a different timetable.

So, I’m just popping in for a short while. My current book is a page turner and it’s not easy to break away long enough to write anything of any consequence. I’m loving the story. I love the characters, the setting, the story line, but most of all I love that it makes me laugh out loud. And long sometimes. A good laugh is good for the soul and this book does it for me. I’m going to be sad when it ends. That said, the joy of the read will soon win out over the sadness.

This is the kind of story where you forget you are reading a book and find yourself living life along with the characters. The last week or so we’ve been staying at the country estate having a house party, but the guests have all suddenly departed, a sign it’s time to go back to the city. We have a murderer to flush out and catch. Well, a potential murderer. He or she, (we haven’t ruled anyone out yet,) has made several attempts on Herman’s life but so far hasn’t succeeded. We don’t want them too either.

Personally, I think it is the grandmother’s friend. He is a doctor and some of the coddling he does to his patient/friend seems a bit manipulative. He may have a reason to want the grandson out of the picture. We’ll see if I’m right about him, or if I’ll change my mind before the end.

Read and enjoyed September 24, 2022

This first one was my favorite. It’s book 1 in the series and I liked it so well that I’m now reading and loving book 2. Book 2 is a continuation of their story although Marian’s sister Ellen is the main character this time. I’m halfway through and the sisters are currently together in a castle back in 1382.

We don’t know yet whether Ellen will be left there too or will be drawn back to present day. We don’t know if the crooked scientist forcing her to travel to an earlier time to find more of the healing water will be able to harm Ellen and her beloved friend if she fails or if he will be caught and charged with his crimes. I know what I expect to happen but so far nothing as gone as expected. Which is awesome.

Here they are.

Book 1

That’s exactly what research scientist Marian Creighton has always believed about her father’s quest, even if it does stem from a desire to save her sister Ellen from the genetic disease that stole their mother from them. But when her father falls into a coma after drinking a vial of holy water believed to contain traces of residue from the Tree of Life, Marian must question all of her assumptions. He’s left behind tantalizing clues that suggest he’s crossed back in time. Insane. Until Marian tests his theories and finds herself in the Middle Ages during a dangerous peasant uprising.

Book 2

In an effort to convince her to take it, Harrison ingests the contents first, and when Ellen witnesses the effects, she can no longer deny the power of the substance in the bottles. Dangerous criminals are also seeking the holy water, and Ellen soon learns they will go to any lengths to get the powerful drug–including sending her back into the past to find it for them.

Finished, finally. This book seemed to go on for a long time. It could be blamed on being filled with an impressive number of details. This situation can be chalked up to changes in writing styles through the years.

Mary Stewart, one of the 20th century’s best selling authors, would be over 100 if she were alive today. Imagine the differences in writing over that space of time. The pace was slower, dialogue different, actions and locations described with enough information to paint a picture in the reader’s mind.

Way back in the day, Ms Stewart was one of my favorite authors but the last couple of decades have brought an abundance of changes in the writing world and while I enjoyed today’s experience it didn’t meet the highs of my early reads. She is a good writer though and tells an engaging story. I’ll admit to skipping over large chunks (chapters, mostly) but it was still worth the read.

I joked in an earlier post about suspecting the butler of these murders. The hotel didn’t have one so that let him off the hook. There were plenty of red herrings thrown to keep us off the track so the ending was a surprise. But not a total surprise.

Anyway, it was a good read. It was set in Scotland, in treacherous mountains. There were colorful characters of all stripes, grating against each other for the most part. On reflection, I can’t think of anyone qualifying as mild mannered. Mind you, mild mannered doesn’t make for much of an interesting story. We need to see a few fireworks every now and then and see them we did.

Laura Scott is a new favorite, I’ve enjoyed her offerings over the last couple of years and look forward to this one too. It’s a mystery, but with a modern treatment this time.

Yesterday I said I would let you know if my current read turned out to be any good. Well it has. This author has a new spin on time travel and it will be interesting to see where she goes with it.

I know in my first post today I said I was done with more books. I was, I just couldn’t pass up book two in this series. Who knows how long it will be before it goes back up to a normal price and I will be kicking myself for missing out.

It’s always a shock when I download books and today’s reaction was right up there. I forget what I’ve ordered and don’t recognize half of them after waiting a few days between connections to wifi. I’m left gazing at the list, wondering how this happened! (laugh)

It’s a bit like Christmas. Surprise, surprise.
